Love the reaction/breakdown videos. Not sure if anyone mentioned Rashawn Ross from the Dave Matthews Band on trumpet. The whole bands is tight. Go Ravens.
Wow, that is one tight group. That is what you get when you put together a group of people that are playing because they love music and not focused on their own ego, fame, or money. They hear the whole groove and not just listening to their own self. You can see how they are all connected to making music and not showing off. Mayer solo was not only just killer by itself, but the way all the others were perfectly involved in the groove made it extremely rare. The ending of Mayer’s solo was mind blowing. The first song I remember ever noticing a band being perfectly synced was the Allman Bros Whipping Post. I get more impressed every time I see/hear Mayer play. I can see that he is connected to the music like you pointed out SRV was it you reaction to his.
Epic jam and so much fun watching you break down this jaw dropping display of “in the pocket “ playing! Just subtle and ferocious at the same time...Thank you
Isaiah won this one sorry. His solo at the end was way more advanced than John’s on this day. I realize it’s not a competition but he really did a great, great solo.

You hear David Ryan Harris say, "This is the last Train, the last Train Home" then Johns ears prick up with that being the name of his single this year a year and a bit later. I'm LOVING your videos! Thank you for doing all of these great bands, especially bands like Phish, WSP, Umphs and other bands of incredible musicians that don't usually get their due! I would like to make a request for what I think would be an incredibly interesting reaction video, DIR EN GREY - Macabre (Live at Tabula Rasa). It's a bit different than a lot of what you've done recently, but it's an epic song. While the guitars take center stage from time to time they often have a more atmospheric role at times as well. Musically I can't figure out what they're doing and I would LOVE to hear your reaction to it. I think you would find it interesting. The lyrics (which are also crazy) are in Japanese, but the video provides subtitles. Please do that one, it would make my quarantine! Edit: Fair warning, it's quite long, around the same length as the Clifford Ball Divided Sky video you did (thanks for that BTW) but it's incredible!
That video was absolutely incredible. Thank you for breaking it down and showing us what is going on. I really think all musicians want to aspire to be that good. What happened here takes hours and hours of playing together and also a humbleness to know your place. They are all stars in my book and i love John Mayer a ton but David Ryan Harris and Isaiah Sharkey are playing amazing stuff here. Cool, different, and interesting. What a groove! Thanks so much for sharing....this made my day!
Even if i dont understand everything it's so nice to see someone reacts to music & picking up every pieces of a track. I'm no major musician, i've played guitar 5 years really basically but i love how you're picking up everything they doing, analyzing and retribute to us ! Nice nice nice =) Love the groove on that tho, truely amazing
At this point in my life the number one thing I want from my band members is... every person playing to the music. Each person doing the best they can to make the "whole" as great as it can be. That's why I love groove music so much and don't really have time for anything elso. This band is a prime example of that, I love it
Love the videos, man! Pro Tip: if you have the video as your open tab (which you do during these recordings), pressing "J" on the keyboard will skip backward 10 seconds. Conversely, pressing "L" will jump forward 10 seconds. "K" will pause and play. I believe the arrow keys are forward and backward 5 seconds depending on the arrow you press. Might save you some time clicking around the timestamps! Keep it coming.

isn't that sax player from the expanded snarky puppy? thought I saw him in the lingus video...
Bob Reynolds
The best piece of music I ever discovered because of you. Since the first time I watched this video, I've listened to the original one at lease 400 times. So fucking good.
The album “Lightyears” by David Ryan Harris is an absolutely top-notch experience all the way through. Everybody that likes this band and groove would love the album. Do yourselves a favor and check it out.
jondoesgym on it
hahaha.. I told you he was a monster!.. What a band!!! this is music you could never get bored listing to. And your reactions were priceless. :)
I've seen this one and it's a "feeel gooood" show 😁 I like how John stands in the back and lets the musicians and singers do their thing, not trying to steal the spotlight or anything.. just enjoying good music 🤘🙌
Mayer is just absolutely incredible and can adapt to whatever situation and band he is thrown into.I went to see dead & company last year and I couldn't see the stage as I was walking up from the ticket booth, just listening to them play before even seeing him and them on stage, he had some of the Jerry stuff down SO good. It really did sound like I was going to a grateful Dead show. I've seen Jerry five times, ratdog, Phil and Friends,etc... I know my "Dead".... They were so good I went home and subscribed to "nuggs"just so I could download a copy of the show I was at & burn it to a CD so I can listen to it in my old car.
I play guitar and love the blues and know nothing about theory really. seeing you nerd out over major 6's and 3'rds and pause it is hilarious..well done also these guys are dope.
I'm SO happy you did a video for this. I don't have many friends I get to really enjoy dissecting this with in this way without feeling like my usual John Mayer guitar nerd fan freak. Thanks dude!
6:12 : how you should react to that jam unless you are dead inside
One of the best jams... so many different styles and influences. DRH's vocals are so dang smooth... Good god!
Legion of Mary-- "Feel Like Dynamite" --talk about a deeeeeeeep pocket, brother.
Check it out. It's Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders and it is smokin'!
That's in my top 3 songs that Jerry ever played on. Oteil and Friends often cover it!
The posture shift at 29:08 tells me everything I need to know about Michael as a musician
it makes me so happy that music like this is being made in the world
that jam is one of the best ive seen. been listening to it over and over again for a while now, glad to see you react to it man.
David Ryan Harris, Isaiah Sharkey and Tiffany Palmer were all on JM's 2019 world tour, maybe others here too, they were as good as this then too
Nearly all of them tour with John. Only keys, bass and drums that don’t. Oh and the pink haired vocalist.
Joel Kew That’s Sean Hurley on bass, played with John for quite a while actually
I just saw this for the first time and I listened to it like 10 times before bed last night. It's just so good!! I can't even.... As Sharky is playing, I found myself numerous times just laughing out loud at the mastery of it. You can tell who the musicians are in the audience. Especially the guitar players, lol.It makes me sad, in a way, becuase I have no one to share my love of this and jazz with. Everybody i know is like, "Yawn," lol. I need more good-music-loving people in my life! Sigh.
What does he mean with "Baltimore tuning" at 02:38, when talking about DRH's dropped tuning? Why is it called that?
I'm wondering the same thing
25:14 "slimy, dirty, sludge factory" absolutely slayedddd me man. when they slowed it down not only was my head bopping but my entire torso along with it. disgusting
The saxophone killed it in this jam
You need to react to John Mayer playing with Buddy guy at farm aid. ua-cam.com/video/WaFMC8ODHf0/v-deo.html. Or John Mayer playing at crossroads 2004 ua-cam.com/video/O58zzcQeQpY/v-deo.html. This is two of my personal favourites with Mayer.
Bill Nye on sax, ladies and gentleman, Bill Nye
4:45 you mention Albert King, but that bit to my ears sounds EXACTLY like Dereck Trucks, both tone and note choice👌🏼
flonsdg what i was thinking man 🍄
that's probably because most blues guitarists studied albert's stuff so they all sound like him haha
@@jeevanpillay Amen! I love Trucks and Tedeschi but they all come the blues greats as they should!
Where do you think Derek Trucks got it from?
@@gdawgs101 Who knows, Duane Allman maybe? I know that bend is an Albert King classic, but the attack, the tone, and the tempo reminded me more of how Trucks would play it, hence my comment. I'm not trying to say he came up with that or anything 🤷🏻♂️
You hear David Ryan Harris say, "This is the last Train, the last Train Home" then Johns ears prick up with that being the name of his single this year a year and a bit later. Maybe it was a tip of the hat from David because he had already heard it way back then or John got the idea in that moment. Ahh I love Music, Mayer & Musicians in general. Thank you Michael.
Wow that's a fun observation! You can see Isaiah and John looking at each other at the same time and smile. It could be a coincidence but I don't want it to be.
Listened to this performance in my car on the ride home for a month straight. Ride is like 21 minutes and it worked out perfect. Just so good.
Sean Hurley is the master on his P-bass.. love his sound and playing!🎉
Michael, I have to tell you, man. I learn so much from watching these and your passion for music is UNPARALLELED. Been playing a LONG time and you are inspiring brother. Thanks for these, 100 k soon you deserve it.
Mike, I just got here. Your subscribers who are suggesting all these songs to react to are a BAD ASS bunch of people. I have increased my library significantly because of them/you. I LOVE how you pick stuff apart ... even though I don't play guitar at all and barely speak music from only a singer's point of view.
I am HOOKED on this channel, yo. Kepp it up.
I feel like I’m watching “Detail by Kobe Bryant” for guitar. You are such a legend and a great teacher. Thank you sensei.
Isn’t the bass player Sean Hurley?
Mike is literally a kid in a candy store in this. Watch 6:05, I'm losing it hahaha. Great video
Love watching your reactions and breaking down of different guitar players! I would absolutely love to see you react to and explain the playing of Brian May from Queen. What do you think makes him special? What do you think would have made him more pleasing of a player to you, etc… 😎
Saw DRH decades ago in his funk rock band, Follow For Now. Check them out.
the trumpet player is Rashawn Ross from Dave Matthews band
hahaha I love watching your face when you’re just watching someone jam
Damn - as if I didn’t have enough to thank you for, you show me this! We’ve been in lockdown for over 200 days of the last 18 months here in Melbourne, and the one thing I’ve missed more than anything was going to see live music. This clip just took me right back to my live gig happy place! And what an epic lineup! Thanks MP
This sax player is our insurance there will be sax players in future generations.
Big fan. I know you normally do songs with electric guitars but in honor of John Prine and his battle with Covid please do a Prine song. There’s a great version of Paradise with Sturgill accompanying on UA-cam. Nice picking. Heartfelt singing. The real deal. Sending positive vibes to John, a one of a kind.
I've watched this a hundred times and it never gets old!!
"God is good..." LOL! My sentiments exactly! DRH has some serious vocal chops too! All living legends on stage!
Seriously enjoyed this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@ 2:00 John Mayer and Michael have the same reaction :D beautiful!
Nice nice nice =)
Love the groove on that tho, truely amazing
DRH's singing is divine.
At this point in my life the number one thing I want from my band members is... every person playing to the music. Each person doing the best they can to make the "whole" as great as it can be. That's why I love groove music so much and don't really have time for anything elso. This band is a prime example of that, I love it
First time on this channel 🙌 your passion for music is fantastic to watch. Subbed.
Thanks!!
It is so amazing to see how passionate you are about the music, I am sitting here at home stink-facing with you, it is really infectious.
...and he sings like Marvin...wholly shit!
