@@SamHolland Thanks. As far as I get you used 24mm when filming yourself at a desk and 35mm filming different objects or S5 to have stronger bokeh? Did you use 50mm once?
Hi Sam. Thanks for this great video. You mentioned that Lumix S5 has 5 custom settings. But you can actually have 12 of them. Just go to Menu Settings > Settings > Custom Mode Settings > Limit No. of Custom Mode and select 10. You will then be able to use C1, C2 and C3-1 to C3-10. It is quite useful as 5 Custom Modes was not enough for me.
Hi Sam, just a small correction: "1-Area AF Moving Speed" (9:15) is only for the movement speed of that 1-area box through the display when you push joystick. It doesn´t affect the camera focus itself. I was also confused when I saw this option for the first time. Try it :) Anyways, thank you for your great content and positive vibes!
Top job! After years of using Canon, then into Sony for film… I just had an S5 delivered for my day job. Instantly love it, the vlog 4K footage looks great, but had a few niggles and things I wasn’t 100% sure about. This video totally cleared all of those up, so thank you mate! 🙏
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This was so helpful since I am a complete beginner and have struggled trying to set my S5 up in the best way. The manual is in-depth but pretty much worthless for me.
Hey David. I’m so pleased this helped! 🤩🙏🏻 when I first tried a Panasonic I was a little confused so I was hoping this would help people. And actually it’s quite simple when you know 🤩 refer back to this video if you get stuck or ask me any questions 🙏🏻🎥
Watching this for LUMIX S5-ll. All is still valid except for "continuous auto focus." Is that right? Brilliant, mate. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it!
Hey Mike. I have a series of videos on the way over the next few weeks. All tips to get better looking video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching 🙏🏻🎥 PS why don’t you think your video looks good? Anything in particular you struggle with?
Inspiring it's the word. Definitely works with standard Canon Rec 709 settings. I've ordered S5 and hoping it will be similar in workflow. Thanks for reviewing and approving this camera. Your videos was actually one of which convinced me to purchase S5. Seeing that in can outperform R6 in many aspects, as well as photography capability with ISO invariance - where you are able to recover much more in RAW than with any other cameras - made my choice. Another attribute was the price, I have to admit. For around 1700 Euro 💶 with two native lenses was not even a half what I would have to pay for Canon RF system in such combo. Now looking forward to work around this camera next week. Thanks a lot.
Hi, you can also easily change custom buttons by hold-pressing the button for three seconds. Also, another autofocus tip from Luca Bono, is that when the camera detects a face, you can press the dial button or touch the square in the screen and once it shows a kind of intersecting lines to the box, it means, it kind of locks to that face.
@@SamHolland Yeah, a little scared of how much it might cost, but I know it's on the rumour mill. I'm looking at that camera, and also (mainly for AF) some of the new upcoming Nikon's which have some great video features included.
That was a really helpful guide - saved immediately to my Pinterest. Im also looking at the Gh6 at the moment mainly because of the 10-25 F1.7 its the full frame equivalent of 20 - 50 F3.5 - this is 99% of my lens range I use and also the exact F stop I mainly work with. Potentially I could be a one lens run and gun on my social media work.
Hi Sam excellent video. Thanks for explaining all settings. I am a new user of S5. I would like to customize my photo and video setting to C1 and C2. Which mode my camera dial should be for photo and video setting? Should they be in Single continuous or Manuel mode when setting up these settings? If I use Auto mode for photo can I use it for video recording also? In both Auto recordings (photo and video) can I use ISO or exposure compensation to adjust lighting? What AF mode you suggest for wedding taking multiple people in the reception? When we need to use 225 area AF?
Wonderful video, I have just bought an S5 and have used your video to set up. One problem: when I set the SS/gain operation to Angle/ISO my display still reads 11° and not 180°. What am I doing wrong?
Hello Sam and your subscribers. I want to thank you for this great video. I wonder if you know about an in depth class that explains every single feature in this camera geared towards a beginner film maker?
Very good and educational video. Have a couple of items to touch up on though... 1)V-Log!? I'm still a noob, as far as any kind of post production work. But if someone (a noob that does not plan to do any kind of post production work) just wants to record the best possible video and immediately share them with friends and family (or enjoy it themselves), V-Log seems like a terrible option! The colors are horribly pale and inaccurate. I ran a test and there were at least 4 different pre settings that looked better, STD, Flat, Landscape, Vivid... 2)A lot of youtube videos that I have seen, the users have better luck with the autofocus. I tried all sorts of settings and my ultimate conclusion is that the autofocus seriously sucks, especially in low lighting... I know, not a very educated response. But for anyone wanting to get this camera, I would only use auto focus if everyone plans to be doing activities within the same general area, in a nice bright sunny day. But if people are going to run up to the camera and there's going to be close and far activity, or the camera user is going to be mobile and record things/people that will be close and far, or it's dusk/night, or are indoors, I would HIGHLY recommend using MF.
Hello and thank you for your videos 👍 I have just acquired this S5 and I am very happy with it 🙂 On the other hand, I have a question, if you can answer it I would appreciate it. I know that this device has the IBIS or a floating sensor. However I am aware that the sensor moves when stopped but is it normal that in operation, it can still move. (Much less but it moves a little depending on the movements made) Can you tell me if this is the case for you? If it is normal? Thanks in advance
Hey Sam, I truly love the quality and image feeling S5 gives on this video. So want to double-check if you use S5 with or without an external monitor and what video mode, codec, and bitrate you use? I just want to understand if it's possible to achieve this quality internally with just body and lens or need an external monitor to shoot RAW or codec with a higher bitrate than S5 has internally (200Mbps)?
Hi. I use the ninja v sometimes but you can get the same quality internally. Just use the highest quality settings used in this video and you’ll be good to go 👌🏻🎥🙏🏻
Stellar video mate, well done! I have a few questions if you don't mind: 1) On the Lumix G series cameras you can just press-and-hold any button to change it's function (you get a complete list to choose from). Can you do that on the S5 too? 2) One thing that annoys me greatly about my GH5 and G9 custom modes is that it also saves the color temp setting, so it changes back to the preset value when you switch between C1 and C2 for example. Is there any way to bypass only the color temp setting in the S5? 3) Can you use the rotary dial on the back for ISO? I have my G cameras set to that and I love it because it's super fast. 4) I'm looking to get an S5 for better stills capabilities, together with the Sigma EF-L converter to use all my EF cine glass. Any experience with functionality? I don't use AF at all for video, but might be handy for stills. Cheers Fred
Hi Fred. Thanks for wAtching 🙏🏻🤩 yes you can change some of the function buttons by pressing and holding. Yes you can bypass white balance on the custom modes. I love this as it’s one thing that’s stopped me from using custom modes in the past. I’m not sure about the dial to be honest. I haven’t had experience with any third party lenses but I did want to try some so I’ll keep you updated. Thanks again for watching and commenting… I hope this helps 🎥
Looking to purchase this camera in the next week, so watching your videos have caused me sleepless nights. One question if I may, I see that most folk prefer the cinematic look of 24fps, yet you go with 25. Why is this?
Hi. That’s exciting! 🤩 truly is an amazing camera! 🎥 …Sorry for the lack of sleep 😂 Because I am in the UK and it stops the flicker from some light bulbs 👌🏻
@@SamHolland Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. As I'm in the UK too, you have me worried. Will I have the option to shoot 24fps? Surely switching from NTFS to PAL should remedy this? Guess I'll find out soon enough.
My pleasure. Yeh you can still film in 24 but you just have to be wary of any bulbs that may flicker because of the circuits. Things like fairy lights at weddings etc. filming outside with natural light is fine obviously BUT if you’re working with other videographers you might want to check you’re both using the same when merging footage 👌🏻🎥 hope this helps 🙏🏻
@@SamHolland Ah yeah that's cool, I film angling blogs, so all outside and some low light at night. Just in the process of switching from an old Sony Camcorder (which has been great) to an S5 in the next week or so, so I'm hoping to take my films to the next level. Also adding a Mini 2 drone. Gonna blow my followers away, well, that's the plan!! lol
Fantastic video, almost an identical set up to me! Also, I think you may have inspired me out of a creative lull. I haven't posted for a year 😅 I might make some break down vids too. Really great work Sam! 😀
I'm about three UA-cam video recordings (you know what I mean) and a few zoom meetings in with the S5 now and I find the AF tracks me most of the time but I have had to use strategic B roll to cover over any problem shots a few times.... There are a lot of reasons why I'm going to stick with it though. I wonder if there will be some improvements via firmware.
Man very great Video and Super Audio quality :) So the first tip is a bit superfluous because there is a separate button to the left of the sensor. But otherwise, our settings are almost identical.
Hi Sam, I'm someone who is only used to shooting in auto (I know...) and is wanting to learn all about my S5 from the bottom. How would you suggest I do so? I'm struggling to find beginner videos.
Hi. I can relate… I know what it’s like trying to learn from the very start. That’s why I made this simple to follow video to get started with the settings ua-cam.com/video/TBP6qFBfft0/v-deo.html I also have plenty of tutorials on white balance and other techniques like framing etc feel free to have a browse of the channel 🙏🏻🤩🎥
Hi Sam, When using false Colour from an external monitor what colours are best for exposing this camera.? Thanks Just got this camera after watching your vids.
This is super helpful also for other Lumix cameras, since the menus and settings are pretty similar. Also, regarding in-camera LUTs, there are some really useful ones you can download, like a false color one. I'm still a filmmaking noob, but some people might appreciate the extra tools for nailing exposure. By the way, are you on the lookout for the Lumix GH6? I know you shoot full frame, but with your partnership with Lumix, maybe they can send you one down the line... :) Would be great to have a review from you!
Hi Alex. I’m pleased you found this helpful 🤩👌🏻 that sounds cool! Ah well there maybe something coming soon 😜👍🏻🎥 stay tuned!! Thanks again for watching
Great Vid Sam, I'm thinking about buying the S5. I have the FZ2500 and I want to upgrade. What do you suggest for filming golfers, like a golf vlog? Auto focus the whole area since I would need the whole scene in focus?
Hi. I would recommend just adjusting the aputure to get more in focus. That will help. I would also guess you don’t need a blurry background as it would be nice to see how far the ball travels? Hope this helps 🎥🙏🏻
Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial! I have a problem though, when I select the shutter angle-mode. It doesn't seem to lock at 180 degree, but keeps changing depending on where I am pointing the camera... Is there a place in the setup, where you define - and lock - the angle?
Hi. Thanks for watching. I’m pleased this video helped. It sounds like you have the exposure mode set to auto. Make sure you are in M mode for manual exposure and that should help. 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Hi Sam! Thanks as usual for your thorough and great videos. I may have missed something but I gather you switched from Canon to Panasonic for video work? Since I started as professional photographer 10 years (did some small video works during the years) I always used Canon and I really enjoyed the experience with the brand. Right now I don't work as a pro anymore but I'm doing personal video project for portfolio and as a hobby. The new R5C is really tempting me but we're talking about 3 times the prices of the S5 and so far it wouldn't be used for any professional work, just for personal use. The S5 it's very feature packed to be honest and as I mainly work handheld (I have a DJI RSC2 but as with every gimbal setup it way bigger than shooting handheld) the IBIS would literally be a plus. I have also a Ninja V to pair with the S5 and I own various EF lenses from Canon. But there's also the R5. So the choice would be between S5, R5 or R5C. I consider myself a hybrid shooter, and right now I've a EOS R (very limited in terms of video feature), so picture side I'm covered (eventually I'd sell it if I'm going to R5/R5C route). What suggestion could you give me from a filmmaker that switched to Lumix S5 from Canon? In the past I owned a GH4, so I'm not new to Panasonic world, but it was m4/3 and I couldn't fall in love with this sensor. Thanks for your patience and time reading my comment!
I like the the fact that you can change the shutter speed to Angle/ISO. However the rear dial still changes the degree. Is there a way of disabling this? I feel I will easily knock that rear dial and if I change the SS by accident and didn’t notice it could have a big implication on the footage captures
YES there is actually! I have a full video on how to sort this coming very soon. Stay tuned. If you want to message on Instagram I can walk you through it prior
Hi Sam, I’ve been using a Canon 70d to make YT videos and it’s starting to overheat and be generally annoying! For guitar videos would you recommend the GH5ii, GH6 or maybe even the Canon EOSR? Obviously the autofocus is a concern and so far I am leaning towards the GH5ii.
Hey Sam! I’ve been looking at the S5, and recently the Canon R7. I love the look of full frame, but the R7 seems to be the safer bet in terms of AF and unlimited recording. Question- most sources say the S5 has unlimited recording in 8bit only. On the Panasonic website, the manual says the S5 will record continuously but break longer files (4GB or 30min+) into multiple clips. What’s your experience been w the S5 and extended recording?
Hi. I just use the Ninja V to record in full 4K unlimited recording and plug the S5 in so it doesn’t lose power. I can record for hours and have no issues in full quality 🤩 even though you’d have to buy the ninja v, it’s still cheaper than buying the Canon. Plus the R7 isn’t full frame. Hope this helps 🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland Both the R7 and S5 are listed at 1500$ on B&H right now. For video the S5 would give me two sets of focal lengths in FF and S35, so I could save on lenses, but adapting to the R7 is cheaper overall.
Hi Sam, great vid, still relevant. Question, what happens when I have filmed in two different frame rates, one in 4k 25fps, one in 4k 50fps ? I would like to include both in the same timeline, so what timeline frame rate speed do I select at the beginning when creating a new project and what output speed do I select to make sure it plays correctly, and plays both normal motion and and slow motion ? Total beginner, cheers.
You should shoot in the same frame rate unless you plan to slow down a clip. This requires some basic planning. However, an editor like DaVinci Resolve will have no problem mixing clips. For your project timeline, choose the frame rate you wish to target as output.
Hello. I have an s5 I'm happy with it, but sometimes I have a problem with the white color is too overexposed what can you do about it? how to set the masterpedestal, exposure measurement.
Hi. It depends on what situation and lighting you’re using. Try adjusting your exposure using different things such as, aputure, ISO and shutter speed. OR you could turn the brightness down of your lights. If you can’t do this, try a VND filter 🙏🏻 hope this helps
Some great tips here Sam. Love the deep dive on the autofocus, it's not something I've really used since the C300. Still loads to learn on the S5 and this is a great reference guide to keep coming back to. Once again, thanks for a cracking video Sam 🙂
Hey Sam, as a hybrid shooter who never used a panasonic camera, you need to change video mode, to photography mode to take some pictures? Or you just need to press the shutter button? Btw can you compare the S5 ISO performance with the A7iii or the A7III is better? Im looking to upgrade my Sony, the gh6 as some amazing specs, but i dont know, micro 4/3 but the s5 looks promising the price is very low for 4k60 and all that specs. The AF doesnt perform very well compared to sony but i can deal with that
Hi Pedro. Yeh, you have to switch to photo mode to take pictures. The Lumix S5 has dual native iso which works well! 640 and 4000. But Sony are good in low light. But I’ve found that the colours aren’t very natural. In my GH6 vs S5 video the bit where we’re comparing the field of view in the tunnel, you can see the Sony colours are very blue which is strange. Hope this helps 🙏🏻🎥 thanks for watching
@@SamHolland thanks to your videos just bought my first panasonic S5 today. Overall under 2000€ its probably the best hybrid full frame camera. Thanks mate!
What was your favourite tip? If there's any other settings you want me to go through in a separate video, let me know... :)
Hey Sam, what SD card covers all possible video modes of S5? Is V60 enough?

Hey. I set mine to 0 or sometimes -3
@@SamHollandthanks, I have mine set to -5 but will do some experimentation with other values for the crispiest picture
Nice. 👌🏻
This was so helpful!
LUV'D THIS!!
Stellar video mate, well done!
I have a few questions if you don't mind:
1) On the Lumix G series cameras you can just press-and-hold any button to change it's function (you get a complete list to choose from).
Cheers
Fred
Thanks again for watching and commenting…
I hope this helps 🎥
@@SamHolland Hey Sam, thanks heaps for taking the time! That helped a lot actually :) Good news about the WB bypass function too. Cheers /F
My pleasure. Yeh it’s such a great camera! 🤩 thank you! 🙏🏻🎥
Good review, but some concepts remained not clear for me. For example - shutter angle.
…Sorry for the lack of sleep 😂
Because I am in the UK and it stops the flicker from some light bulbs 👌🏻
Gonna blow my followers away, well, that's the plan!! lol
That’s gonna be amazing! 🤩🎥🙏🏻
Thanks for making this tutorial. Very helpful!!! :)
My pleasure. I’m so pleased it helped 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Brilliant review
Nailed it! When can you do one of these on the FX3?
Cheers brother! 😂 I’ll have to have a go on yours! 🎥👍🏻
Fantastic video, almost an identical set up to me! Also, I think you may have inspired me out of a creative lull. I haven't posted for a year 😅 I might make some break down vids too. Really great work Sam! 😀
Hey Luke. That’s amazing! So pleased you’re feeling inspired! 🤩🙏🏻🎥
For recording an interview, what settings do you recommend for autofocus? Excellent video, thanks!
Would these settings be mostly relevant for the S5 ii. Thank you.
Hi. Yeh most of them will but there are a few bells and whistles extra on the ii BUT my setup video is coming next week so stay tuned 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Thank you Sam, great content, I just got my LUMIX S5 today, any advice on what lens I should get for b roll videos?
Sam, excellent presentation. Just one question. What's an Englishman doing with a baseball?
😂 Thanks William! I love American things. Fascinates me! 🙏🏻
Man very great Video and Super Audio quality :) So the first tip is a bit superfluous because there is a separate button to the left of the sensor. But otherwise, our settings are almost identical.
Thanks Paul! 🎥🤩🙏🏻
A useful video that makes me wonder why camera manufacturers are stuck in the '90s with these horrid interfaces. They could all learn from Blackmagic!
That’s why I made this simple to follow video to get started with the settings ua-cam.com/video/TBP6qFBfft0/v-deo.html
I also have plenty of tutorials on white balance and other techniques like framing etc feel free to have a browse of the channel 🙏🏻🤩🎥
Hi Sam, When using false Colour from an external monitor what colours are best for exposing this camera.? Thanks Just got this camera after watching your vids.
Thank You for the video
Thank YOU for watching 🙏🏻🎥 hope it helped
Great tutorial but....after the setting... I can't access anymore to auto focus menu by clicking the botton... any idea? thanks
Hi. Just check that your lens is set to AF too. This should help 💪🏻🎥
@@SamHolland oh I see. I appreciate it. Thank you!
🤩🙏🏻🎥
@@SamHolland yes - thank you!
So helpful. Thanks
Thank you! Glad it helped 🙏🏻🤩🎥
Is this still a good midrange option? just bought one with lense on amazon - will it be good enough for my media business?
I have a S5IIX and I normally film in C4K 30p Prores. Do you believe there is a better setting for my videos?
I like the the fact that you can change the shutter speed to Angle/ISO. However the rear dial still changes the degree. Is there a way of disabling this? I feel I will easily knock that rear dial and if I change the SS by accident and didn’t notice it could have a big implication on the footage captures
YES there is actually! I have a full video on how to sort this coming very soon. Stay tuned. If you want to message on Instagram I can walk you through it prior
I have a question: for general b-roll (people, object...), What is the best autofocus setting? -1 speed and +3 sensibility? Thanks!
All very nice tips.
Thanks Will 🤩🎥
Thanks for the movie! :)
Hey andy. The GH6 is great but if you’re concerned about autofocus why not go for the Lumix S5ii? 🎥
@@SamHolland I thought you might say that! :)
Very helpful!
Thanks James. So pleased this helps 🤩🙏🏻🎥 thank YOU
Hii sam. How can i disable Direct Focus are square on display ? I dont want see this. Thanks
THANK U MAN.
Thank YOU
Hey Sam, as a hybrid shooter who never used a panasonic camera, you need to change video mode, to photography mode to take some pictures?
That’s amazing. So pleased you like it 🤩🎥
