Just got my s5ii this week, and this video has been a huge help since this is my first Panasonic and first modern mirrorless. I'm coming from DSLR and needing to set AF to single point and trying to get the near eye on AF -s so having even facial recognition is huge
Just swapped all my Nikon gear for this camera, Nikon came with a large manual, the S5 II comes with a quick start. I think no manual is my only complaint as there is so much to learn about it and get familiar with. Thanks for a really well-done video, I sat through it working with the camera and finally feel comfortable with it. This is the definitive walk-through!
Absolutely amazing video, thank you so much for making this video. I have just ordered the S5ii as my first ever camera and I have no idea about anything, so I watched your video in advance (I should receive my camera in a few days), but I will watch it again when I actually have this beauty. Just make sure you run the right mode for what you're shooting. If you are doing a talk to camera, put the human tracking on and its outperforming my Sony cameras in that scenario. For other stuff like product showcase unboxings you might want to set up a one area mode :) If you're using the S Series lenes, the AF is fantastic.
My skills have lapsed a bit and this video was a great refresher and helpful in setting up camera for typical scenarios from the jump. This is a great reference video for anyone, like me, new to Panasonic cameras.
Very good. I just noticed something. I’m trying to see a recording time to display on the screen when I’m recording. I can’t seem to figure this out with the display. Any ideas?
Yes, even I was shocked when Shane accidentally break the screen of new camera. See Shane you're the only one who informed what tracking feature was missing/removed on new GH5M2 compared to GH5M1. Your videos have such a great level of detail testing in real world and we listen and attach to your videos word by word. Ace, even me remember screen incident till now🙏.
Yes you can in autofocus one area mode. In manual focus you need to move the focus point and hit the AF button on the back to switch focus points. The autofocus way is the easiest.
@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks. Like basically I got a guy eating in the middle. And behind him a tiger is approaching. But I wanna tap the tiger to basically blur him out. And have the focus on the tiger. Type thing. If it makes sense. I'm really interested in the camera 👍
Thanks for the effort you've put into this. A point that came up recently on other channels: Can you confirm that for 1080p, full frame, and frame rates above 30 fps, the camera uses the "old" contrast DFD, and not PDAF? The explanation I've seen is that for full frame read-out and higher frame rates, lines and pixels are skipped, causing phase-detect pixels to be missed as well.

Those are the dual native iso but anywhere in between works fine. I usually shoot vlog when it’s really bright or sunny. 90% or more low light stuff I would shoot in the natural profile.
What does the enlarged live display do in the HDMI REC OUTPUT tab ? I have tried it and it doesn’t seems to do anything , can you check this out please ..
Thanks for the comprehensive video! I have one question though, In the Lumix S5IIX's menu under the 'Rec Quality' tab, why does it offer 10 pages of different (Rec Quality) settings if you shoot NTSC - alternatively, if you shoot PAL, you only have 6 pages of different (Rec Quality) settings??
38:40 idk if it'll hurt SD card that much, but general consensus is that it's better to format SD card, not to delete single files. But that's the advice when you deleting photos or video files. For the purpose of saving settings it might be good to have cheap low capacity storage SD card solely for settings/emergency options.
I appreciated this video. One thing I'm having trouble with as I've just bought the S5ii but it seems to be on a setting where what's in the viewfinder during M mode, does not match the final photo. I set up some lovely shots, only to have the final shots overexposed, or so underexposed I just had a totally black image (yes, the lens cap was off). What setting makes what you see is what you get? Also, please remind me how to get rid of that silly PIP while focussing. I changed the setting in two places, but it's still happening.
20:48 Hello. When i click that rear button it doesn't open the focus modes for me, the camera instead starts focus peacking. I'm not sure if i changed the button the focus modes are mapped to but how would i fix this?
Late here with a question. The C1-3 dial settings seem to be stuck on Program. I haven’t been able to set it to 180 degree shutter angle no matter what I try. I set up everything else according to the video.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you again for your answer, but in case that the camera is mounted on Ronin gimbal? Is there any option to power the dummy battery from a powerbank?
HDMI signal and info display Hello, I always use an exteernal monitor w my S5IIx. I only get the info display on the external monitor though (which can be set ON/OFF). I would like to have the info display visible on my in-camera monitor as well. Is that possible? On S5 it was always there.
You are an amazing teacher. Perfect job. Since many of us are new to open gate (especially me!) it would be good to see an video showing how you edit into different aspect ratios in post. With one 30 second clip could you edit it in the formats for instagram, tiktok, and UA-cam. Never done any editing with open gate. Thanks again.
Great video!!! Do you know if the 1-area+ box is reducible and expandable like as the 1-area? Because on my S5ii I can enlarge and reduce the box only 1step up and down. Thanks
You can only do that with the one area box and not the one area plus. Edit - it is adjustable but not in the same way. The difference from minimum to maximum is quite small compared with the regular one area mode.
Excellent tutorial ! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii/s5iix due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is this a problem for professional work?
Hi, little question when it says 200 mbs when shooting in 6k 25p. Does it mean my SD card has to have a W: MB/s of 200? I bought a Sony Tough V60 150 W: MB/s will it be enough?
Do you have advice for using the RØDE wireless go ii mics on a shoot at a gala. I used the two mics on a lumix s5ii camera and found like it cancelled the audio of one for the other once it was added in to my editing software filmora. But when I watch the video back the audios are balanced and fine: just that it picked up the background noise also. Unfortunately i’ve deleted the audio files so I couldn't fix it in post production. I assumed it would work the with ease when i would shoot with both mics on the iphone. I did record in split mode. Do you have any advice?
Is the 'open gate 6k' recording feature is supported by any external field monitors or its own panasonic app for phones as monitors? The in camera settings are 3.3 5.9 or 6k so wondering how this translates to 4k monitors. Basically would only need it to function as a monitor/screen as the camera already has the settings needed, unless theres a external monitor that could bump up the framerate on the 6k open gate mode?
Hello and thank you for a great video! I never owned a Panasonic camera before, so everything is new to me. I’m having a problem and hope you can help me with it? I have tried your recommendation and shot both in 6K and the one below. In 16:9. I have been copying all my clips into Final Cut Pro. Then (without any work on it) told it to write it to a file on my Mac and a copy to 4K Apple TV. But what I get on my screen looks very weird. It ain’t 16:9 or full picture. Someone told me I should crop it first? But when I use crop in FCP, nothing happens? The picture size stays the same. What am I doing wrong? Hope you can help me.
Great video ! Can you be more specific as to what settings are saved when saving to a custom settings. And also the 3 custom settings are for video and still right? We don’t have 3 for stills and 3 for video? Lastly when you pushbthe video record button what are the settings used by default? I don’t own the camera. Still undecided between the S3 and the a7rv ( currently only shooting stills and wondering if the video capabilities of the a7rv would be sufficient for a beginner and conversely if the S5 still capabilities would be an upgrade compared to my current Fuji XT2. Hope that makes sense 😅)
So informative! Thank you for making these through. I'm just jumping to the S5ii and trying hard to find the way to record to HDMI only, not parallel to a SD Card. Ist it possible and if it would be, where could I find it?
If you have an Ninja recorder, you can do that yes I am pretty sure. I don't have an Ninja but I record via HDMI to another recorder without any issues. Are you asking if you can start recording via the camera over HDMI?
Do you have experience with bad internal audio performance quality on S5IIX ? ... Even when it is set to Low gain and -12 Db , its is very easy to overcrack audio. Looks like Sound Limiter does not work as good as in S1H .... I am extremely disappointed with this. I need internal sound recording from 360 degree around me when i am using gimbal or run and gun camera. Never had this problem with G7, G90, GH4, GH5 or S1H.... It is just so easy to burn audio on the S5IIX :/ ... Am i doing something wrong ? Thx
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I have a GH5 II with viltrox and 18-35sigma. Which makes it a bit annoying as I focus everything manually. I'm thinking of switching to the S5II, do you think that would be a good update?
Is there any way to change the function of a button besides holding it? I changed the blank button on the front near the lens, but I cant do the same with the top three buttons near the record button (wb, iso, etc)
If you're in video mode I think those ones are now locked to those functions. All of the back dials and wheels can be adjusted by holding them down for a few seconds.
What third-party WiFi apps are compatible with the Lumix S5ii camera, and how do they work in terms of range and control over features such as shutter, ISO, aperture, and more?
I borrowed s5ii from my friend for testing my canon lens.I tried my canon lens tamaron brand 24-70 2.8 it was not compatible with s5ii it didn't allow me to change the aperture and it was autofocusing very funnily on the wall art instead of human face I even tried to manually point the focus but it was locked on to the walls. another lens I tested my canon 50mm 1.8 It was a hassle to focus sometimes it focused sometimes it didn't and the backbutton focus didn't work properly. my canon100mm canon24-105 worked well I have to try my canon70-200 tomorrow
I haven't tried using third party lenses or adapters out there. I know Tony Northrup tried that on his channel, but I don't own any Canon gear. I hope it works out.
Hi Shane, I have a couple of questions about the camera that I can't seem to find an answer for: When using the live lut, say a color space transform from v-log to s-log3, can I still use some kind of rec709 conversion in camera? (Even if it's the v-log view assist). The reason being, I want to bake in the log transform and still look at a corrected picture in camera. Also, while using an apsc lens what formats get greyed out? Can I still use any of the VFR modes? Thank you so much for all the info
Hello! I really like your aproach in giving us such valuable pieces of information. I have a question related to S5ii namely, I wonder fi the S5 small rig cage fits to the S5ii. Have you test it?
Hi Nicolae, thanks for the kind words. I don't have a smallrig cage for my S5 but I do have a YC Onion one. Once I get back from a quick trip away, I'll see if it fits. my instinct is, that it wont fit due to the thicker design of the new one. If you have a half cage, it might still work, but I am yet to test this out.
Yes it can, but double check the write speeds of the brands you are looking at. I use Silicon Power cards and their V90 cards are pretty inexpensive now considering.
If I embed the clips from the Lumix S5II into DaVinci Resolve, then 4 audio tracks are created, 2 of which are empty. How can I switch the camera to 2 tracks?
There's usually an easy toggle in the software to select which stereo track you want or which one you want to mute. I don't know if the camera lets you turn it off right now. In Final cut I just untick a box and I'm done.
the camera have 4k60 and 4k30 if I buy it in europe? 4k25 and 4k50 is ridiculous nowadays, the world uses youtube and monitors all have the same refresh rate I ordered this camera but when I saw this on your video I am considering to cancel, I live in europe but I only intend to shoot 4k60, 4k30 and 6k30? please tell me the european version is not limited like this
i've noticed that FF 1080p50 and 1080p100 does not use PDAF, it switches to contract base, which is disapointing. There are people that still shoot in HD and want the use of the full sensor and shoot in 50 or 100p . You can use PDAF if you switch to crop mode. Is it hardware limitation or maybe something to come in next firmware updates?
The S5II due to the price to performance ratio. If you shoot manual focus only, the S1H is still a great camera and you might be able to pick on up cheap, but the S5II and X are excellent value cameras with Phase detection autofocus that works great.
@@MinisterTravis The GH6 is great, but it has the old autofocus system and worst battery life than the S5II/X and G9II. If you're shooting anamorphic and mostly manual focus, the GH6 is a great choice and there's plenty of more affordable Cine Lenses for M43.

Beginner here... How can I colour grade V-log? Can I do it in camera with rec 709 for exaple? Is the quality better than standard profile?
Lots of detailed videos on S5ii video capability, set up, user tips etc. Wonder what it’s like as a stills camera?
I covered that in my review video. Check out my full review :)
NTSC also has a native 23.97 (just shy of true 24p) which is why you'll see more modes in NTSC. Pal is pretty much just 25/50/100.
Thanks for video I can’t seem to see a link to your recommended SD cards
I've just udpated the links for you in the description.
Great Explanation 👍 helps me a lot
Glad to hear that!
38:40 idk if it'll hurt SD card that much, but general consensus is that it's better to format SD card, not to delete single files. But that's the advice when you deleting photos or video files. For the purpose of saving settings it might be good to have cheap low capacity storage SD card solely for settings/emergency options.
It's fine to delete files. That's some old early DSLR file formatting myth that got passed on way too long.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks for clarifying!
This was the exact video I was looking for. Thank u so much! I just upgraded to the s5 mark Ii from the LX100!
Just hold it down for 2-3 seconds and from the menu scroll down until you see reset to default.
Can somebody please explain Luminance level setting, what use with v log, what with stills? I’m struggle a little bit. Thanks in advance
Late here with a question. The C1-3 dial settings seem to be stuck on Program. I haven’t been able to set it to 180 degree shutter angle no matter what I try. I set up everything else according to the video.
You need to set it up in video mode then save it to the custom mode.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Wow. Thanks for taking the time to reply with helpful information on this year old post. Tremendously appreciated!
When powering with the AC adapter that came with the camera should a battery always be in the camera also?
If you use a dummy battery, that is all you need. For USB-C power, you'll need to keep the battery in, yep.
Thank you mate for the info! Can you please let us know if we can use the camera while charging it with a powerbank through USB-C port?
Yes, you can do that with a 9v3a power supply.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you again for your answer, but in case that the camera is mounted on Ronin gimbal? Is there any option to power the dummy battery from a powerbank?
I learnt so much from this. Thank you.
You’re welcome cheers 😊👍
HDMI signal and info display
Hello, I always use an exteernal monitor w my S5IIx. I only get the info display on the external monitor though (which can be set ON/OFF). I would like to have the info display visible on my in-camera monitor as well. Is that possible? On S5 it was always there.
Hey great video as usual....can this Lumix S5ii be powered directly from a power bank without using a dummy battery?
You are an amazing teacher. Perfect job. Since many of us are new to open gate (especially me!) it would be good to see an video showing how you edit into different aspect ratios in post. With one 30 second clip could you edit it in the formats for instagram, tiktok, and UA-cam. Never done any editing with open gate. Thanks again.
Does focus ring control only work with Panasonic lenses or with Sigma L mount or manual focus lenses as well?
I haven't tested it with Sigma lenses sorry mate. I think it could be with the Panasonic lenses only.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you
Hi, question: Do you hear the fan noise when shooting with a shotgun mic?
No
Great video!!!
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thank you very much for helping 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent tutorial ! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii/s5iix due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is this a problem for professional work?
Hi, little question when it says 200 mbs when shooting in 6k 25p. Does it mean my SD card has to have a W: MB/s of 200? I bought a Sony Tough V60 150 W: MB/s will it be enough?
V60 will be fast enough. You can even shoot 6k 25p with a V30, but the transfer time to the computer is a lot slower. V60 will speed that process up.
With a normal sd card of 200mb/s you can shoot in any mode or you need type II? For video
Thanks for the useful video. Maybe I missed, but how do I set the auto WB lock?
What do you mean sorry? If you use the WB button you can set it to a specific setting in there.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks, I found a way to use auto WB and lock it by pushing a button.
Can you power and charge the Lumix S5ii directly from a power bank without using a dummy battery?
Hybrid phase detect only in 4k and does this work for stills shooting also?
Yes - it uses a combination of PDAF and Contrast for photography. The PDAF works in all photo modes I am aware of.
Hi, what is the name of that machine on your desk that you switch screens by tapping on it?
It's the ATEM Mini Pro
Thanks for great tutorial.
Glad it helped! Thanks for letting me know 🙂
Do you have experience with bad internal audio performance quality on S5IIX ? Thx
If we record at 120, 150 or 180 frames, record the audio ?
Thanks
Audio is present up to 120p from the Recording Quality mode. If you use S&Q, the audio is automatically removed.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I have a GH5 II with viltrox and 18-35sigma. Which makes it a bit annoying as I focus everything manually. I'm thinking of switching to the S5II, do you think that would be a good update?
Please help me Sir! I don't know what kind of software to edit Panasonic S5II raw? Thank you.
You need a pro editor like Final Cut, Davinci Resolve, or Premiere Pro - there's probably others but those are the main 3 people use.
Hi Mickael. The Lumix Sync is app is a first party app and it's all you'll need to control their modern cameras.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy thanks.
If Panasonic ever releases a GH6 version with PDAF, would you happen to know if the Leica 25-50mm F1.7 would work with the PDAF system?
100%. It works with the PDAF on the Olympus cameras just fine.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks 🤗
Is LCD screen touchable the same way as in Canon cameras? I have Canon M50 and I use screen to set everything up during recording session.
Yes it’s a full touchscreen you can change everything except the audio levels with it.
Can you rotate the flip out screen 360 degrees?
No screen can do a full turn, but it's easily spun around for selfie filming etc.
Hi Shane,
I have a couple of questions about the camera that I can't seem to find an answer for:
When using the live lut, say a color space transform from v-log to s-log3, can I still use some kind of rec709 conversion in camera?
Thank you so much. Great tutorial!
Great preaentation! Thx!
As I see the max write speed of S5ii is 200Mbps. Can a V60 card offer more than the V30?
Yes it can, but double check the write speeds of the brands you are looking at. I use Silicon Power cards and their V90 cards are pretty inexpensive now considering.
If I embed the clips from the Lumix S5II into DaVinci Resolve, then 4 audio tracks are created, 2 of which are empty. How can I switch the camera to 2 tracks?
There's usually an easy toggle in the software to select which stereo track you want or which one you want to mute. I don't know if the camera lets you turn it off right now. In Final cut I just untick a box and I'm done.
How can I record un 48p 4k ? Is it s&q mode ?
the camera have 4k60 and 4k30 if I buy it in europe? 4k25 and 4k50 is ridiculous nowadays, the world uses youtube and monitors all have the same refresh rate
I ordered this camera but when I saw this on your video I am considering to cancel, I live in europe but I only intend to shoot 4k60, 4k30 and 6k30? please tell me the european version is not limited like this
i've noticed that FF 1080p50 and 1080p100 does not use PDAF, it switches to contract base, which is disapointing. There are people that still shoot in HD and want the use of the full sensor and shoot in 50 or 100p . You can use PDAF if you switch to crop mode. Is it hardware limitation or maybe something to come in next firmware updates?
I'll ask some questions about that. I had no idea HD50 or 60 was like that, I'll test it out. I shoot in 4k where it works fine.
Which camera would you recommend for low budget films? The S1H, S5ii or S52x?
The S5II due to the price to performance ratio. If you shoot manual focus only, the S1H is still a great camera and you might be able to pick on up cheap, but the S5II and X are excellent value cameras with Phase detection autofocus that works great.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Gh6 is also in the picture for me! It seems to have everything
@@MinisterTravis The GH6 is great, but it has the old autofocus system and worst battery life than the S5II/X and G9II. If you're shooting anamorphic and mostly manual focus, the GH6 is a great choice and there's plenty of more affordable Cine Lenses for M43.
