This very good preview video convinced me to drop money on the game during this winter Steam sale and I must say I am not disappointed. Excellent preview and absolutely spot on with your details and opinions. Thank you! 👍
Good preview! I've been avoiding playing this until it was out of EA so I can enjoy the full story line. Since you like Freelancer like myself, I urge you to try out Spacebourne 2 coming to Early Access Feb. 17th. It ticked all the right checkboxes for me as an evolution to Freelancer (only 20 years later, better late than never). Although made by one developer it puts alot of other modern AAA space games to shame. I'm shamelessly spreading the word on this game to all Freelancer vets so the talented Dev will continue making great games 😃
@@wholesomegamer It's definitely eurojank and rough english but honestly some of the most memorable games I've played were eurojank! (Gothic series, Two Worlds II, EYE Divine Supremacy, STALKER, Precursors, etc!)
The ship design lacks of imagination. If you ever played Galaxy On Fire, their previous work, it's ship designs are truly unique imaginative and inspiring
I personally adore the ship design in ES2 and really looking forward to the transmog system they will implement. But I can understand that design choices are heavily subjective.
Im thinking that they are saving a lot of designs for full release since that's an aspect of the game that isn't really the type of gameplay developers smooth out during an Early Access period.
@@kbuttstadt They stated that not all transmog options for the exterior might be available at launch, but the feature itself will be there. I made a video with all the available informations about v1.0 yesterday.
Currently playing this game and i am having a blast. I love the combat and the exploration. I have been doing so many side jobs for each faction that sometimes i forgot what's going on in the main story. Nevertheless i like the main protagonist and his AI sidekick.
The puzzles are great for making you look closer at the environment, in combat it's more of a background blur and most of your attention is on movement and aiming. Racing is also great since there's quite a few movement abilities that pair very well with the small and fast ships, a lot of fun in trying to get a fast record. I agree that the music is a bit bland but I'd much rather it be something easy to fix by either the player or the devs than something like gameplay.
Puzzles and racing are, as I mentioned, very well executed - I simply don´t enjoy doing them, but that is of course just a personal thing. I wish they would have invested the development time for that into stuff I like more, like a basic economy for trading or escort missions like in Freelancer. But that´s why I say it is important to judge it by the things the developer wanted and not I as an individual.
@@wholesomegamer Oh btw, if you want something like freelancer/4x but modernized and don't mind playing in 2D then Starsector is great, especially the community mods.
At 17:00 you will find the section with customizing your ship and a brief look at the cockpit view - I personally never use it, that´s why there is no footage in the rest of the video. Cockpits can be customized in the final release version (same for the exterior "transmog" feature).
I do enjoy the game and while I learning my way around the game could use some different tutorials for things like crafting which I am really struggling with right now. Some stuff is just not easy to figure out and there are not many videos out there either. Hopefully someone will do one on crafting. Nice recap though.
@@wholesomegamer That would be great and not just for me. I was able to make some progress in my Crafting training last night. Still though it is definitely NOT intuitive. Nothing in the game is really and that is not a bad thing. Too be fair I don't play a lot of this sort of game, but always wanted too. You need to invest the time for sure. I am digging the RPG aspects of the game though. Got yourself a sub.
I love everything about this game, seriously. I'll buy it eventualy ( i have lot games to play atm ) but ..... there is only one thing i just don't like...is the black screen when you enter or exit FTL 😢i wish they'd do something about it
I personally don´t use a Steam Deck and as of now the EA Version is pretty resource hungry on the gpu. But they are still working on optimization and the game provides a chunky amount of video settings and also FSR 2.1. There is an official dev statement from 2022 about the Steam Deck "We haven't started optimizing for Steam Deck, yet."
I would lie if I could recall exactly how Freelancers control scheme was in every detail. But controls are one of the biggest plus-points in this game in my opinion. Really smooth & tight and works extremely well with the pace and style of this game. It´s a Mouse + KB combination, fully customizable.
@@wholesomegamer Nice, I think it may be a day 1 buy for me but PC only. I tried playing strike suit zero on the PS5 but the controls are not the same on mouse and KB
Love the game so far. I just don't get it and maybe you didn't cover it here. Is there an faction system? I mean there are these other faction peaceful ships. And I just murder them for their loot:) are there any consequences for that?
As far as I know you cannot grind or change reputation towards the different factions. At least that was the case in the latest EA-build, I´m still in the process of completing the 1.0 version, but I doubt that this has changed. Take it with a grain of salt, maybe there is an endgame mechanic that I´m not aware of right now.
It gives a lot of Freelancer vibes, but the game also takes it´s very own take on the genre. It is first and foremost an arcadi, semi-open world Diablo in space, with some Freelancer genes added on top.
The ambience music within the zones or during combat is fine....it´s just this super bland generic elevator music during cruise-speed that get´s annoying really fast.
@@wholesomegamer personally I found the music so bad it soured me on the whole game, I am glad you can stomach it. I remember turning it off in ES1 as well.
The game is highly overrated. Yes, the game has nice visuals and it works. That's where its pluses end. The problem with the game is that the developers seem to be reinventing the wheel from scratch. There's Freelancer, Series X, Dreadnoughts, Eve, Space Rangers, Star Conflict, and others. You want active fights, there's pvp/pve, purely about fights. There are games about economics and strategy. There are simulating a real live world with a bunch of factions, lore, etc. That is, no matter what aspect not to take the game is better than Everspace 2.
Interesting take, I think the game is highly focused on what it wants. A fast paced space-looter-shooter in the vein of a Diablo in space. And it executes exactly that at a very polished level. The ships feel great, the combat and controls are tight and the loot and perks so far provide very good and thought out progression system, that fit the scale and size of the game. Of course it is not for everyone and depending on what you expect from this game one might disagree with the direction the developer took for some systems.
Well, I usually stick with the biggest and slowest ships, like the Gunship or Vindicator. And I´m definitely that kind of player that plays slow and methodical compared to others - so the footage might be a little one sided. The smaller ship classes do play a lot faster. And while the general game doesn´t permanently forces a time limit on you - like the Rogue-Like ES1- there are Ancient Rifts, timed events and densely packed High-Risk Areas available. So maybe there is still enough adrenaline and faster pced combat in it for you 😉
@@wholesomegamer Yea, but it's not just your gameplay. All gameplay I've seen have enemies act as moving targets while the player barely has to move at all. In ES1 your movement mattered as much as shooting, or even the most basic enemies could shred you from far away. It felt like dogfighting, not target practice. Sorry to bother you, I'll go rant to the devs.
@@sugipulaboule No game can be for everyone and I can see your points, even if I personally like the direction this game is going. In the end you can always use your 2h on steam and refund it, if it is not your cup of tea.
@@wholesomegamer I can see where you got your name. Yeah, I prefered the first game, even though that wasn't my cup of tea either. I even prefer Galaxy on Fire 1 and 2, or even Chorus. I'm sure this game is fun and will give it a fair chance. I just wish Freelancer got a proper spiritual successor (though mods are still keeping that game going). Good video. Cheers.
You can always do that, but the point of a review or preview is to point out the pro´s and con´s of a game. As mentioned is the rest of the sound design and stuff like combat music in a very good place.
I'm with you on the puzzle solving stuff.

When 'good' modifies a verb, it becomes the adverb 'well'.
Example: 'It plays very WELL.'
