Sony a7IV Review: AMAZING! (vs a7 III)

- Literally nobody was expecting this! Tony & Chelsea Northrup review the Sony a7 IV ($2,600 at sdp.io/a74) against the previous generation camera, the Sony a7 III ($1,900 at sdp.io/a73). They test it for portraits, sports, landscape, travel and wildlife. The new 33 megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera is a BIG upgrade in several ways, but might not be worth the money for some photographers.

I came here to see this video "one more time" at 4K resolution
😅😂 this comment wins
LOL
thx for reminder 😵
I loved your cameo with Kai!
Haha that was brilliant!!
Haha Kai did it well👍
its ok I watched this yesterday..🤣🤣🤣..
:))))
@GilbertTV same here!
I watched a mere 2 minutes and it went down. Poor me.
Same here ☺️
@@alexbucklandphoto I thought this was hilarious & T&C are now off Sony's Christmas card list..🤣
I've watched multiple reviews of this camera. Yall highlighted some usability features that others skipped over. Usability is a HUGE deal for many of us working photos! Thank you for taking the time to actually learn the camera outside of the specs.
I would be extremely interested to see what happens when you use your a7IV with breathing compensation turned on using the Sony G 200-600mm lens. does it correct the problem that the G telephoto has when shooting at close focusing distances? You mentioned using extension tubes to compensate in your review of the lens, but could this feature cure that? This would be very useful for my wildlife needs if so. Could you do a video on the breathing correction and use this lens in it?
I'm currently doing sports photography on an A7RII - takes lovely photos but the slow focus kills me. I'd LOVE to get an A9 mkII, but it's way out of my price point for an amateur / occasional paid gig person. I hadn't considered this - it is a lot more in my budget - so really appreciate this review!
Great info! I'm thinking about joining team Sony. I mostly shoot talking head footage in 4k 30. I am debating between the a7IV and Cannon (R6?). My only hesitancy is that, side-by-side, the Cannon footage seems to have punchier, more vibrant colors and skin tones out of camera. However, colors look good in this video! Do you think that I can achieve Canon (or better) colors out of camera (without grading)? Thanks again!
Yes you'll be able to match Canon colour science with a slight adjustment of tint or contrast etc. Plus you can create your own colour profiles etc. So I would 100% get the Sony because there's no 30 min record limit. Sometimes talking heads go over, and it's such a pain.
Look at EOSHD. This guy has LUTS that pretty much have hacked the Sony’s to look like Canon. Another great option, and one I prefer is the Leaming LUT. This is more of a corrective LUT vs a creative lot like the EOSHD. I prefer Leeming LUT personally.
@@BryanSnider Leeming LUT has saved me so much time and works so well!
@@jambononi ever heard of the Canon R5 C?
@@bahaatamer1245 well it literally got announced last week and my comment was 2 months ago so yes, I have now heard of the Canon r5c 😅
Yes, they have FINALLY released a camera that can record over 30 mins haha. But yeah, looks genuinely really good!
Tony how do you feel it compares to your A7R4 for a general hobbyist doing landscapes and family stuff? I can get price pretty close (A7r4a) and on paper disappointed by the rear screen and EVF of the A7iv but new menus and controls tempting.
The lack of the iv in the front of the camera bothers me for some reason
Why did they do so?
For Asian I think the number 4 equivalent to 13 for the western, so they don't want to show it straight to others?
Me too!
Hahaha...Ummmm...NO. it's a pre-production model! They don't want people knowing what it is....I saw on Fro knows photo that even the meta data says "Sony Camera model"
I have been living in Vietnam for 10 years and I understand the superstitions about the the numbers 4 and 13(I my apartment building its floor 12A instead of 13) I'm not making fun of that at all. It looks like an amazing camera!
@@gregorybeale In my country we have 3A instead of 4 and 13A instead of 14 🤣
Just a small incremental update as expected. I won't be upgrading my A7III since I use it mainly for landscape, astro and some portraits. I am waiting for the A7RV. I will keep enhancing my lens lineup in the meantime. I just got the 24/1.4 GM and I'm loving it.
Diego, I take it that you love the A7iii. Have you ever had an a6000? That's my first camera, which I've had now for a year or so, and I'm considering upgrading, but I'll admit that I have a bit of imposter syndrome.
@@runhardhooah I do not have any of Sony's APS-C cameras. I have a Fuji XT-4 for some hybrid uses.
Any modern full-frame would be a great upgrade, especially if you shoot in low light frequently. Forget about the impostor syndrome. Experiment with different cameras and setups and get whatever fits your workflow and budget that will advance your photography/videography further. If it is not going to help that cause, then it is not worth getting, it is just an impulse purchase.
@@runhardhooah I have upgraded from the A6000 to the A7iii in 2018. If I were you, I would DEFINITELY get an A7iii in the used market once the A7iv is released. Price will drop dramatically. Pair it with Tampon glass and you have professional looking footage at an affordable price.
@M Tech I think I got really lucky with mine. 700k down and 0 problems.
@@runhardhooah I upgraded from the a6000 to the a7 iii and really liked it. Only downside is the higher price of the lenses, in no time you spent a few thousand...
How does this compare with the Canon R6? If you are primarily a wildlife photographer, which camera would you buy R6 or the AIV? What if you are bit of hybrid photographer and you need some video?
Looks like their A7III aged a bit. It used to take more sharp photos.
I really liked your AF total shots/sharp shots test. How would you say it fares compared to a7R IV? I am sure that there will be a different video on that, but roguhly? Is there a point buying r IV anymore if you do not need that resolution?
Hi, congratulations for the very interesting video. I'd like to ask you a question. For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much
Im seriously considering switching to sony from my nikon d780. I am a wedding photographer. do you think it would be a good switch?
Did you have a chance to check the reliability of the eye focus (not if the camera detects the eye - if the focus is indeed on the iris or front focus to eye lashes / brows)?
How does this one compare to the A7Riii? I have a Riii (love it) for my main body and Rii (never used) for my backup. I'm looking to upgrade my backup Rii. Would you consider the 7iv an upgrade from the Riii? This way, I could just use my Riii for a backup and make the new one my main. One HUGE reason for the backup upgrade is the Rii doesn't teather to my computer, which I use a lot in studio.
Hello sir I want to buy sony a7iv body and like to use canon EF lenses using adapter so in this case does the camera works perfectly like autofocus and IBIS ?
Thanks for your work! Appreciate your reviews!
Love Sony as a company. I have been using the Sony a7II for several years and love the photos it produces in portraits, sports and wildlife.
Thanks for the review. The A7iii tracking focus was terrible (dots jumping everywhere). Is the a7iv like the a9ii with tracking (small green box that sticks)? Thanks
Tony & Chelsea,
If money is not a major factor which would you recommend for all around camera ( Sports, wildlife, family and landscapes on vacation) Sony A7iv, A9-2, or A1? And why?
Is teleconverter worth to spend money on now? Earlier Tony said TC gave worse result compare to cropping. Is that only true for some lenses, cameras or combinations? If im not mistaken he said that about the Sony 200-600/5,6-6,3.
Thanks for the video.
With the new 7iv can you save video and stills settings separately. Using the memory recall modes. Ie. In camera - memory 1. Saves camera settings. In video - memory 1 will save video settings. Or is it just what you set. Ie only video or only stills.
Thanks.
Is the A7R III still great camera? I am a amateur photographer who enjoys shooting landscaping, can you give you an idea which one should I buy. A7R III or A7iii?. I am going to pair up with FE 16-35 MM 2.8 G LENS.
Hi, Between A7 IV and A7R IV which one has speedier autofocus acquisition and better tracking and by how much. please help me to make the buying decision, I feel if the AF performance is equal or close then going for higher resolution is better.
hello, is the a7iv good for birds in flight photography? im also looking for good low light conditions as well.
As a still photographer how does the A74 compare to the AR3A which seems to be about the same price or close to the same price.
For someone who has been thinking about switching from Canon to Sony, the flip screen, menu system and improved auto focus for bird photography is definitely a huge deal. Those three were the things that always worried me about switching from Canon to Sony.
for me it looks a lot more like the R6 in terms of improvement, but with a higher resolution sensor.
This video is so sharp and clear compared to most other videos on UA-cam. It's really noticeable.
Maybe captured in standard pp, or maybe s cinetone.
Cause Tony has stopped down.
Its the 60fps on youtube, it has a way higher bitrate and more uncompressed guideframes, i wish more knew this and care about it. UA-camr need to get off of the CiNeMaTiC BS-train
@@Soundwave857 I know he has said in the past he uses 60fps. Didn't realise it was that the was making the difference. Once I get the new Macbook, will give it a try.
So NOW is the correct time to release this video?
How expensive was first premature release?
Which camera do you suggest for beginners who want to take good pictures and video both …and which is best for taking pictures of hotels & Airbnb’s…out of A7 III/ A7 IV
Happy Holiday Folks, Question.... I use the Sony a7III for talking head and training videos at work. One thing that drives me crazy is, when I attach a monitor to the camera and I'm shooting in 4k, I lose face auto detect. Has the a7IV corrected this?
Tony and Chelsea - another great take on a new camera! I just want to say as a long term subscriber I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos. Keep up the great work!
Does it have 4k in S&Q for quick 4k video timelapses?
Question - Trying to use the Sony A7 IV with a Metabones adapter for Canon EF lenses. Won't focus. Any suggestions? Worked with my Sony A7R IIIa. Thanks!
How is this camera for birds in flight? I have the A9II but shoot maybe 5% birds in flight compared to 95% stills. I found that the A9II has worst image quality compared to my previous A7III for still shots (especially visible with higher ISOs > 6,400) hence am thinking of downgrading to the A7IV for its greater megapixel count which would allow me to crop more.
are the crops at the end, around 8:35, labeled backwards? Like, because the A7 III crops look significantly better despite having a significant linear resolution disadvantage
Is there a Sony A7 IV vs Canon R6 comparison wildlife video coming soon? I’m trying to decide on MP / eye focus / fps ? Thanks
Is it recommendable to adapt sigma 24-70 lens A mount to Sony a7R camera with E mount?
What suggestion do you have for the hot shoe mount. I have a Good V1 flash and only used it twice because it broke at the hot shoe mount. The corresponding flash transmitter is also very hard to get one and off the camera. I think the plastic mounts are terrible, so trying to see if you guys have run across this issue and have a recommendation.
Very nice review, Tony & Chelsea. I can tell right off the bat you are extremely knowledgeable on the information.
I have the A7SIII as well as the A7C. I use the A7SIII for shooting my videos and then the A7C is used for my thumbnails as well as recreational photography. I am deciding whether it is worth it to upgrade my A7C to the A7IV -- it will be used primarily for photography.
Though I do not see the A7IV being a good video substitute for my A7SIII as it looks like the A7SIII remains video king -- especially when shooting 4K.
8:36 - why do the text/lines look thicker for the a74? Adobe raw convertor?
Tony & Chelsea, I have an A7Riiia I use for weddings and portraits mostly. I have been waiting for the A7iV to come out because I need a 2nd camera, specifically for weddings. If I get a good price on the A7R4 it is not much more than the A74. Which would you buy? I don't really need 61mp, is the Autofocus on the A7R4 as good as this new A74? That would probably be my most important factor. Will the buffering while shooting multiple shots be faster on the A74 because of the new CF card slot (and the lower mp (than the R)? Great content and videos, you guys are awesome! Thank You
How is each camera skin color tone on standard awb & tone straight out of camera in jpeg files?
Sometimes I do event photography that I should deliver the photos immediately and no time for editing.
Appreciate your answers. Thanks
Can you put in your descriptions what camera you guys used to film each particular video?
I recently bought the a7iv and i see the body mirror is not stable, it is totally shaking. Is it common in this model? or it is a damaged piece…? i am totally confused
I still cannot decide between the A7 IV and A7R IV. How much better is the AF on the A7 IV over the R?
Is this camera compatible with Sony LE EA5 adapter?
Hi Tony and Chelsea. Great review. Really anxious to see your comparison video of the Sony a7 IV vs. the Canon R6 especially in the bird photography department . Thanks ! 😀
How long have you had this camera? seems very green for Connecticut in the fall.
thanks 🤗🤗 for your great support or knowledgeable video 🥰 can you please one more help I'm so much confusion in 2 camera canon r6(24-105mm f4-7.1) vs sony a7iv (28-70mm f3.5-5.6) which one is best please suggest 😀
thanks for the info. i have an older dslr but want to upgrade to a full-frame mirrorless camera. i’ve been holding out for this one’s release. one of my problems with the smaller camera bodies, though, are the not-so-great viewfinders. how’s the viewfinder quality on the a7iv?
upgrade with a7 IV if you need video 4K 422 10 bit. If you have no need this specification you can upgrade your dslr with Sony a7 III
What about baby a1, any news for sony crop sensor flagship ? Yesterday was an alert but couldn't access :(
I just ordered this as my 1st full frame camera ever! Can't wait!
Always love your video. Looking forward to see the comparison of Canon R6 VS Sony A7IV. I’m will wait until your comparison video. I like the A7IV new touch screen manual and the fully articulated screen like the Canon. Does it has the thing that block the sensor like R6. The other thing is about the cost of CF Express. I know it’s faster. Hopefully the price will come down in the future. Does it mean I will need a faster computer and possibly upgraded my hard drive? Thanks.
Will the new A7 IV fit in the A7s III cage from Smallrig (Nr. 2999)?
Can the A7IV be in tracking small flexible spot with animal eye af? My A7RIV seem to not be able to!
nice ... for wildlife , do you suggest A7 IV or A1 ?? ... ignoring the price point
Hi guys, would the image quality of Sony 7C be comparable to a7IV?
Thank you for the review!!
I am really interested in how the camera handles the stripe issue that the a7III suffers from in some lightings especially shooting towards the light. What can you say about that?
Stripe? Sounds more like lens issue
Banding in video? This has variable shutter same as A1.
@@jumpydesign & Chris, no that was sensor thing for stills photo. It was discovered when the A7 III was released, the (first) example picture was from Sony's press event where they allowed UA-camrs / journalists to shoot a human couple with the A7 III. One of the journalists published his problem photo. I still remember that scene. Just would need to dig out a link. Or, you probably can google it 🙂 It was reported widely (dpreview, fstoppers, petapixel?)
Looked like pixel level striping problems, i.e. caused by phase detect pixel rows or columns.
@@tubularificationed so it would definitely not exist in this model as its a new sensor.
I think there was a software fix for the striping.
what camera ands lens are you shooting yourself with? in this vid ?
How is the 1080p and 1080p 120 here vs the A7iii?
And this video was recorded with which camera?
Does the A7iv have built-in automatic focus bracketing?
I have very bad. Colour banding in the night photography , any ideas about it?
As always, great video with a lot of good information. Thanks for all that the 2 of you do for the rest of us camera nerds...
As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying....from the red planet, to yours...lol
Very helpful review, great work!
What about noise? Is it better in low light or astro?
At 6:47 , the video is so out of focus. Then what's up with improved AF?
🙇 How can you see the green square for eye focus while shooting? It doesn't show up on mine
A7iv or A7c? Witch one has the best focus system? I need that quick eye animal detection.
both have great AF, a7iv is just better overall because of improvements like menu/active ibis/4k60
If you are letting ISO soar to get the exposure you want, how does high ISO perform compared to a7iii? Let's say at 12,000-.
Wait. Are you guys at Harkness Park in Connecticut?
A7IV new? or A7RIV barely used with shutter count less than 2k for same price ? which is better choice ?
depends on purposes, but overall definitely a7iv
What about the electronic shutter? How many frames does it do? what about the Rolling shutter control?
How do you find the auto focus on the A7 iv when compared to the A9ii?
Thanks
4K 60FPS Cropped at 1.5? I'll be looking at the R6. :-(
5-6 fps for stills if u shoot uncompressed raw lol what a joke...
one question
I cant find any info about
if the A74 has clip in filter ..
does anyone know if it has or not ?
What camera did you use to film this video?
What stand are they using with the white reflector?
Hi, would you be able to let us know how many times the A74 calibrates focus in 1 second? Like A9 does 60 times and A1 does 120 times a second.
I am selling my Sony a7iv for $2000 bucks.
You can reach out to me if you’re interested in checking it out 👍👆👆
Should I sell my a6500 and sigma trio and make the leap to the full sensor world, a7iv??
Full charge after continue video shoot battery life review plz share.1 hrs or 2hrs ?
R6 vs A74 vs Pixel 6 pro. do those expensive toys really that much better than (I can't believe am saying this) a cellphone?
Yes & no, depends on needs, low light quality is way better with large sensor cameras but they can't fit into a pocket or make phone calls.
So for wildlife stills Canon R6 or Sony a7IV?
How would you describe the shutter sound/loudness compared to the a73?
da-tsch...
Hi I have the A7IV with the tamron 28-75 and I find the focus point super laggy when I burst shoot
The focus point follow the subject when I don't shoot but once it's starting shooting, it doesn't follow at all and It's always a little behind.
Anyone else noticed this?
try changing to faster AF settings (somewhere in menu) also check lens/body firmware (be careful/follow instructions)
Tony and Chelsea this is another great review. Now I have a big dillema. Do I go for the original A9 OR A7IV for running dog photography? A9 has 20FPS BUT A7IV has more resolution for larger prints. NOT sure how autofocus compares between those two. Which one would you get as paid dog photographer?
A9 definitely.the only reason to choose a7iv over the a9 is the video aspect,a9 is lack of PP but if you dont color grade or even dont do video, then a9 will be a better choice.24mp vs 33mp isnt that difference, almost unnoticeable.but the AF and fps of a9 is just way ahead of a7iv.they say it (a7iv) has the same autofocus system as a1 but it’s not,it just has the same phase detection number.but the AF/AE calculation is nowhere near a9,let alone a1.(a7iii is 20 calculation per second,a9 is 60 calculation/s and a1 is 120 calculation/s) it might improve a bit from a7iii but still doesnt even close to a9.
@@rizatamin thank you for your comment🙌 As I’m not interested in video I think I will go for A9 and with time get another body with higher resolution. I like to have 2 different lenses on the shoot anyway 😆😀
How much of a difference do you think the couple of extra Megapixels made in the handheld low light test? Would that be 1/3rd or 2/3rds of a stop?
It’s not just that. Better color science. Better focusing
@@Chris-ey7zy "science"?
@@Chris-ey7zy I was not talking down the camera changes. Higher resolution is typically more punishing for sharp hand-held test.
So if all else stayed equal, I think going from 24MP to 33MP would hurt the reciprocal handholding testing and was wondering if Tony et al had a ballpark for how much that would be.
@@BrianIrwin apparently it’s not. New sensor. Sony creates sensors for Nikon Fuji and who knows who else, they are ahead of everyone Else because of it
I would be interested to know how the A7IV compares to the A7RIV. The price differential is not great.
Flip out screen, 4k60, new menu, more AF, almost half the amount of megapixels…
You are differentiating on the difference between difference and differential. Differential would mean two people pay different prices for the same product.

We are looking forward to seeing the comparison between a7RIII and a7IV in term of Dynamic Range. I think this will answer if A7RIII owner should swap to A7IV. So far, the only thing we can see is just the megapixels, the thing that we gonna lose if swap to a7IV.
I second this. Currently I have an A7Riii and an A99ii and I am looking to sell out of A mount (even though it means losing my Zeiss 135mm f/1.8) and going all E mount and I am considering a second A7Riii or an A7iv. Or for a bit more an A7Riv.
Where was this video recorded?
where is this place?
Thanks! You really answered the questions that I had on wildlife. Here is an interesting question. Since a9 used is similar price to the new a7iv. Which one would you pick for birds in flight? Is the AF and the EVF latency on the old a9 better than a7iv?
The a9 is using stacked sensor, which enables it to have 60 AF/AE calculations per seconds (a7iii is about 20, I think mark4 is somewhere around that too). With that fast readouts also allows the a9 to shoot wildlife in blackout free and in silent shutter without the rolling shutter effect. The a7iv cannot match the a9. For BIF, I would rather have an a9.
@@joseph.luong.m thanks for taking the time to explain this. Much appreciated!
canon r6 lol
The A7iv shoots 10fps only with jpeg, and 6fps on uncompressed raw.
It's too slow for wildlife in my opinion
I mean, considering that a7IV can't shoot at more than 8FPS, even with a CFexpress card, that alone makes it a very bad camera for wildlife in todays standards. If you shoot wildlife, your primary concerns should be how fast can your camera shoot and how good is it in low light - and how fast does your lens focus but that's not camera related. Especially so if you're shooting birds, hard to find or rare animals or marine animals. Most cameras nowadays can shoot at 14 or more FPS, that's almost or over double the a7IV's burst, which is what you really need for wildlife photography - the more, the better. I just realize this comment is 2 months old but if you still didn't upgrade your camera, you should really look at the R6, Z6ll, a9 or if you have the budget the R5 or the a9ll. All of these cameras do over 14 FPS.
Any difference in the viewfinder?
Another great video. Thanks for doing this!
Hello,
I'm looking into the Sony A7 iii and the A7 iV.
Is it worth the extra €900 euro if the main idea is to shoot newborn portrets ?
The video capabilities are less important.
The main goal is to do photography with a lot of portrait and some landscape now and then.
Are the extra megapixels a huge gain in this ?
Thank you for your time and I hope to get an answer on my question.
I don't think the difference in megapixels is that big of a deal, definitely harder to edit & store though. The new menus & improved autofocusing are big upgrades. Screen can be annoying for high/low angle photography. If you rarely use evf then a7C might be a good pick.
@@mirrorlessny thank you for the answer ! But is the A7C not a camera used mainly for video ? We are less interested in video and more in photography. Or am I wrong ?

@@maximlenaerts1055 a7c is like a7iii but with improved af, selfie screen & smaller evf, it's also lighter=great for travel/portability. R6 a7iv a7iii a7c Panasonic S5 = all will do well with portraits
Wow. The A7III was 2018? I guess I forgot how long ago it came out. Time to upgrade!!
And I love this side-by-side comparison. Very well done!
Kind of amusing then to see that some of their comparison shots yielded a sharper A7III shot. Even when just focusing on a roof.
From 2018 to 2022, 4 years has passed. You have a 4 year old camera. That's definitely not yet old enough for an upgrade! People nowadays call 1-2 year old cameras old and question upgrading - are you mad?! I literally just saw a video titled; '' Is Canon R6 still good today?'' and the video was made couple months ago in June of 2021... Canon R6 was released in July of 2020... THAT'S 11 MONTHS AFTER THE CAMERAS RELEASE!!! Is an 11 month old camera still good?!?! OF-FU*KING-COURSE IT IS!! People are winning photography awards and still doing work with 8, 9 or even 10 year old cameras, while people on UA-cam are complaining if their 2-3 (in this case 4) year old camera is still good enough?! What?! I have a 1DXll and I've only just now, two weeks ago, decided to upgrade to the a7IV - NOT BECAUSE 1DXll IS ''OUTDATED,'' because it's not, it produces way better images than the a7IV but because I wanted to finally jump to a mirrorless camera. I don't know what's wrong with people on Instagram and UA-cam but you people need a reality check ASAP.
With Sony getting serious about putting Canon and Nikon behind, it’s been good for both of those competitors. Innovation is simply going to intensify, and who knows where we’ll be in a year or two. But you can go broke trying to keep up with the changes. Ultimately, you have to ask yourself if your existing equipment provides you with the needed results. It’s good to hear Tony referring to used equipment…there’s a ton of it out there.
So for stills, this or the siii?
