      I have a9, a7riv and a1. The af on a7riv is the most unreliable af I have used even compared to my older Nikon DSLR bodies. I'm glad you pointed this out as it has been a major fail on this hi-res line. The a1 is definitely worth the extra $ and the problems with the a7r5 focusing make it a much better buy for pros.

    The improved image stabilization is far and away the most important feature for me. Claimed 8-stops versus 5.5. As a mountaineer and stills photographer who hand-holds in low light for landscape, this is a huge improvement over the a7r4. Would love it if you did the comparison in a follow-up review video.

      I came hoping for a Tony signature "sharp shots below the reciprocal rule" graph, especially compared to the R5 that he praised for hand-hold-ability. I've been in search of a full frame IBIS system to compete with the IBIS experience of my 2015 Olympus m43 camera; Canon sounds like it's getting close, but after shooting Sony for 5 years I'd love to see them catch up and not have to switch...

      @@stephenbash2721 I have been shooting both the Canon and the Sony but with DSLR Canon and the A7R3 mirrorless SOny, and the one thing I am constantly bothered with, even after some brackets and the LGrip is how wonderful the Canon feels in the hands, while I just have to live with the pain and discomfort of the Sony body. After a lot of videos, I think the R5 is my way to go.

      @@downlink_x You would be mad because when a new camera is released it virtually makes your camera « old »? That’s a very strange reasoning.
      I personally don’t buy a camera to brag about it being the « current best one ». I buy a camera to take pictures :)
      The new camera doesn’t make your « now old » camera perform any less good than when you bought it. Your camera still performs exactly the same.

    I honestly can't take this video seriously. To claim that the A7R IV's autofocus is unusable in low light is outright bull$h!t. If you are shooting in such low light that it won't focus, then your images will be $hit because there will be little to no available light. In normal, real-world use, it focuses just fine. In fact, it focuses much better than most all other full-frame cameras that were around just a few years before it's launch...and somehow those were pretty good in weddings and low light situations back in their day. If you are having trouble using an A7R IV in weddings, then you need to go take some photography lessons. It's YOU, not the camera.

    After just going to my first air show this past weekend, I'm finding a lot of my pictures to be out of focus. I'm was using the R and R7 with the R7 out performing the R by a long shot. However, lots of pics still weren't in focus as much as I would like. This Sony with airplane tracking would be pretty handy! But I'm quite invested in Canon gear and lenses and don't want to change. I hope Canon gets on the ball and has aviation tracking soon!

      They are different products, this is a direct upgrade to the a7R IV, the non R version aims for different usage, but regards to the new AI Focus system, with better prediction, tracking and subject recognition, this is the next step into the Sony Focusing system, and the improved IBIS . If you care for those specs then yes, it is an upgrade.
      But if you are interested in the non R cameras lineup, I suggest to wait for the A7 V which should come with the same improvements.

    I'm so glad that Sony has essentially brought back the screen mechanism from the A-Mount (A77ii, A99ii), with just a move out instead of staying central. This might be the body that finally gets me to move away from the A-mount. Maybe.

    • @Lofote
      @Lofote 2 роки тому

      The mechanism of the α77 and α99 (both generations each) is different - that one doesn't flip to the side, the one of the α7R-V does. The one of the α77/α99 was way thicker thats why they never implemented that. This one is quite thin so Sony finally managed to find a solution :)...

  • @Zomlies
    @Zomlies Рік тому +2

    Having used the A7iii since 2018 I can tell you that your choice of focus point is most likely why you’re missing focus. Small subject = small AF point. Flexible spot is too broad. AI is great but you still have to give it parameters or guidelines to operate in. Flexible spot is meant for larger subjects like people, dogs, cars, etc that have more contrast and are moving. Using it on very small or distant subjects is kind of like tracking a car on earth with JWST (not the right use case and overkill). AI and AF are great, but we still have to think for the camera a little bit.
    At weddings, when I’m taking ring photos I just use a small regular focus point and I pretty much always get the shot with the 50 f1.2 GM. When the dance floor gets wild using flexible spot will be quite interesting to watch (green dots all over the place). If you give the camera less freedom it will nail focus more often than not. I often turn off face detection, use a medium focus point, and program eye-AF to the AF-On button so I have more say in what the camera does.
    As always… this is subjective 😂. But it works for me and even with the A7III I barely missed shots using the 50 F1.2 at F1.2 lol.
    I ended up buying the A7RV! This camera is insane! I appreciate your hard work on the reviews, it helps!

    How does Sony a7rV stand against the Sony A1 Image quality-wise and overall performance?

  • @miketipton678
    @miketipton678 6 місяців тому

    Went from A7RIV to A7RV. I waited and waited based on the video here and others. Then I rented the A7RV for a week. First, I had to update a few of my lenses for the AI AF. Yes it was a night and day difference as far as nailing AF. Groups of pelicans and other flocking birds I could select one bird and the AI AF stayed on that bird even when others flew in the view. That to me was stunning. Another thing I noticed was the AWB really changed. No longer was the color as cool but more Canon Nikon mix. I mean Canon colorish (warmer), and Nikon in terms of contrast and DR (especially in the shadows). AWB huge improvement.
    Using the A7RV for RE video the AWB was so much faster to change when lighting of the room varied. This was a PITA with the other cameras we used. People with Daylight bulbs in one room, a Soft White in a hallway and those orangish tungsten edison bulbs in their kitchen fixtures. That was always a start and stop nightmare even with the A1 some of our guys used. The A7R reacting of AWB was almost seamless and even worked with dramatic iso settings going into rooms with really blown out windows, bumping up EV to another stop to compensate the camera exposing the brighter window scene down which killed all ambient and even additional lighting in the room. This is quite normal and bothersome for any video shooting unless you have a Red which can handle it much faster.
    After the A7RV rental I just ended up buying one. We have the A1 at work here and to me I didn't find a ton of difference with the AF with the exception of the Sony lenses I used after those updates. The AI AF nailed birds, insects and so on. Last week I bought the 70 200 F4 and even the Macro on that lens with the A7RV just amazed me. I also found the AI AF works differently based on the focus modes being used. For sports and faster smaller birds, kids swinging on a playground set, kids baseball or soccer games, I found the wide mode focus area better for EYE AF, but focus mode on the 200 600 not on FULL worked much better. I don't know why that is other than giving the lens a range, but I'll keep testing it out.
    Great video!!!!

    I was interested in the a7r line back when the mark III was about to hit. I was looking to upgrade from an a65 at the time. I never did pull the trigger. I chose an a99ii instead to keep with the SLTs. I love the camera, but I kind of wished I chose full mirrorless. Because I am a hybrid shooter, so high MPs appeal to me as well as great video color depth. I'm surprised that the 10-bit 4.2.2. is not mentioned more in the reviews! I think I want to finally make the jump to mirrorless this because I am sold on the 10-bit video. The A1 checks the box too, but the price demands too much justification.

    If you want to truly test the autofocus, shoot with a light front fill against a bright backlit window, which I do in at least half my sessions.
    My A7Riv focuses extremely well on eye focus, right up until I shoot against a lot of soft backlight
    pouring into the lens which really confuses the autofocus.
    Then I have to give up and use medium point focus and choose hair, or something else in the same focal plane as the eye, because it’s not going to catch the eye in that situation.
    If the A7Rv could do that, I’d upgrade tomorrow.
    But shooting with only front light is a good test but not definitive.

      @Rebel Hikes I'm on a 7RII and it is worth for me to upgrade just for the possibility of quickly toggling to crop and being able to produce smaller RAW files, as well as being able to shoot long exposures hand held when I don't have time to setup my tripod. The super flippy screen can also come handy for framing landscape shots in brigh daylight when paired with a Hoodman loupe, this is something I've been waiting for years now. This camera overlaps many good functionalities of other cameras at a lower price.

    4K 120 is important to me and is a benchmark for wildlife video. The A7R5 can't do it however the FX30 can and it's basically the A7R5 sensor in crop mode. Technically they could have done it, I think, but it would be need a 2.4 times crop. This is a clear win for the Canon R5. However my question is: who does 4K 120 better; the Canon R5, or the Sony FX30?

    Great video - couple of questions on the A7rv compared to the others - dynamic range and rolling shutter comparison? Also my 2 cents on the A7riv for wildlife. I think you are not being fair on the A7riv as a wildlife camera. I shot most days for about 6 months with a Sony 600F4 for wildlife and the A7riv - I found that autofocus was adequate for birds in flight. Not all shots were keepers but some were - especially the first couple in a burst. You couldn't just point and shoot the camera, you had to point, wait for the camera to acquire focus in the screen and then shoot. The Sony A7riv just couldn't keep up with the tracking if you had a burst longer than a second or so. Perched or slow moving subjects were not a problem except in very low light. Mark Smith whose videos I watch and is a far more experienced photographer than me seemed to rate the A7riv as a wildlife camera too. I have used an A1 for the last 7 months and it only cost me £700 more new than the price of an A7rv. Why anyone would buy an A7rv at that price I just don't understand.

    I'm a wedding photographer with 2/810 and 6 main Nikon lenses. For years I have been on the fence to switch to sony and then the z9 came out. This is the challenge, sony has a bigger selection for their mirrorless over Nikon with the z mount. I understand that I can get two ftoz adapters and keep using my lenses and just buy a z9. but for that same price, I can get the A7RV and a lens with no need for adapters. Eventually, my F mounts lenses would "need" to be switched. I feel that this is the time to make a decision because nonetheless still a change from DSLR to mirrorless. What do you think?

    • @barryobrien1890
      @barryobrien1890 2 роки тому

      Z9 is the way to go. It's big and heavy, but really it is built for many years. If you switch to Sony you get 1 lens and then you need to sell all your f glass for nothing and buy m. You will also sell your f glass as the z glass is so much better, but at least you have time and can keep your old bodies as backup. Just my opinion. Nikon keeps improving the z9. If you want a light setup and can afford to dump everything then Sony may be a good option but it won't be cheap. If you think you will go there some day then do it now. I still think Nikon has the best colors for portrait work, canon is really good too and Sony is close.

      @@barryobrien1890 to me weigh is a non issue, the first thing I got for my cameras is the battery grip and I never shoot without it. I have heard about the greenish tint on Sony. Another thing I’m considering to not lose money is to get a z9 to use with my Nikon lenses and start later with a Sony and build that system at a slower pace. I’m thinking I already spent that money and would get no benefit out of giving it away but at the same time either way I will be buying new mirrorless lenses one way or another.

      @@MR-si2cd agreed. I ended up moving to z glass pretty quickly after getting a z7. They are just a lot nicer. May I suggest you wait for the next Nikon body. They are supposed to release a d850 update similar to the a7r5. I personally feel Sony is a little plastic feeling for me. Maybe it's the smooth plastic. I also think the type a cards are way too expensive and type b are the way to go for size and speed of workflow. It is something to consider for the long term. If you use a grip then the z9 is probably your best bet. Try both for a few weeks before you decide through a rental, as it's a big decision and there are benefits of both

      @@barryobrien1890 I waited for the longest with Nikon, I guess I’m used to it by now lol. We’ll see what happens, I’m not one to be getting every camera that comes out, I learn early on to buy once and buy good and that’s what the D810 is. I purchased the first one brand new and the second one used and all this years later can’t tell the difference. What makes me doubt about Nikon is that most of their lenses are 1.8 which I’m weird about because I have a 50 1.8 that I barely use, I either use my 85 1.4 or my zooms or 105 2.8. I would like to get something that’s 1.2 and other than I believe a 35 they don’t have that many options

    • @barryobrien1890
      @barryobrien1890 2 роки тому

      @@MR-si2cd try the 1.8 z glass on a z7. I found it to outperform my 1.4 f at 1.8, and matched at about 2.8. the 70 -200 2.8 is phenomenal but bigger than Sony or canon. They will have more than the 50 1.2 soon. I have not tried that yet. I sold my 85 1.4 f and got the z 1.8, which i prefer as i rarely shoot wide open at 1.4 as i try to get more than eyelashes in focus. Anyway i think the z9 will be around a lot longer than most other z bodies, and now they are becoming available. In a few years they may become affordable used and i will upgrade my z7 which has been great. The 105 z is much better than 105 f. You will really like that lens ss well as the 24 to 120 zoom which is my daily go to lens.

      ...... still miss my 5DMKIV sold it when I switched to mirrorless ( Sony A7RIV and Sony A7IV ) and often regret doing so, forget megapixels autofocus points up the wazo etc etc, at the end of the day what matters is the overall picture and imo there is just something about that 5DIV that even without post it just looks great colour sharpness etc. there comes a point where its just overkill and that goes for alot of todays tech from cars to appliances to ? and for cameras I think we surpassed it long ago. There are a number of very very talented professional photographers and content creators that are using cameras that are 10 + years old and the only way I know this is because they have said so.

At first they were working beautifully, but 3 months later the lens has gone "soft" 8 out of 10 pics have noise and are not sharp, even without changing any settings. We sent the camera itself to be checked out because we thought that was it but it is still missing focus and is not sharp. Neither lens nor camera have been dropped or out in inclement weather. He is thinking of sending the lens in to get checked as well. What are your thoughts on this? Could there be a settings issue or do you think there is something wrong with the lens? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
