The song is simultaneously sad and terrifying to me. I always felt like he intentionally walks the line between missing her and obsessing over her. There’s a hint of rage at points. We’ve all been there when a relationship ends. Amazing performance.

    • @ChrisHelms-xm4fm
      @ChrisHelms-xm4fm Рік тому +19

Exactly. When artists and by artists I mean music, art/paintings, poetry, literature and so on, when artists are creating and typically for the most part, hone their minds eye to what they know, love, heartbreak, personal experiences, pain, any one of a number of things but when their art reflects a personal parallel experience and they are able to capture it, even a very brief moment of it then a sort of gestalt occurs.
A very real, a very tangible shared experience that conveys a lot of the same emotions that are felt, then.....
This is where the Muse has struck a mighty resonance that's felt by all.
This is just an amazing thing to be a part of.
Just a few very infinitesimal brief moments in time and space where everyone leaves their daily lives to just step outside their minds.
This is why art and artists in all its vast forms are so indelibly connected to humans and what it means to be this.
I have always loved this version of Black. You see them playing and you see someone not just singing a song but a tormented man rhetorically looking for answers. The emotion in his face registers like a hammer blow.
Words are nothing but hollowed chaff cast about when meaning isn't applied.
But when you apply meaning this becomes conviction, passion, power.
This is how art has moved, shifted and transcendentally shaped the real me.

    • @JacketsOnFire
      @JacketsOnFire Рік тому +15

I think it’s more the fact of the incompatibility with relationships and difficult to come to terms that the person you love will have a better life and better compatibility with someone else. Sometimes the person you love or want to love you’ll never have in your life. And it’s in that futility which makes the song real and depressing

    • @BeardOfRiker

It stabs directly into the heart, past the ears, brain, or anything. You *feel* his words before you even hear them. Hey, oh
    Sheets of empty canvas
    Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
    As her body once did
    All five horizons
    Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
    Has taken a turn
Oh and all I taught her was everything
Oh I know she gave me all that she wore
    And now my bitter hands
    Chafe beneath the clouds
    Of what was everything
    Oh the pictures have
    All been washed in black
    Tattooed everything
    I take a walk outside
    I'm surrounded by
    Some kids at play
    I can feel their laughter
    So why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin
    Round my head
    I'm spinning
    Oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
    And now my bitter hands
    Cradle broken glass
    Of what was everything
    All the pictures have
    All been washed in black
    Tattooed everything
    All the love gone bad
    Turned my world to black
    Tattooed all I see
    All that I am
    All that I'll be, yeah
    Uh huh, uh huh, oh
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
    I know you'll be a star

The editing killed me with Van repeating it was Chris Cornell.
And I remember he was so excited too, because at least it was (it wasn't) someone he knew of, I love Van, he has such a kid like heart.
Thanks for the video, Pearl Jam rules!

This is what I think of when I think of the best of what grunge was. You could feel it in Eddie Vedder’s voice and in his soul and coming through his body. It was in his gestures, in his expressions, EVERYTHING he did was gritty. THAT was grunge.

Thank you for reintroducing this music to young people. I'm a firm believer that people need to know the history of modern music. First, and foremost was the blues, that led to everything that came after. Then there was rock which completely revolutionized music. Then soul which was so wonderful. Country had a hand in all this too. Then of course the revolution of rap and hip hop. I don't like it when people don't know the wonderful ages of music that we've been blessed with. Listen to all of it folks.

I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!
