The little pause Kurt does at the end is one of the most heartbreaking moments in music.
It's at that moment you could see it and feel it, he was leaving and knew it
I've often thought the same over the years, every time I watch this performance. That last note he screams out, combined with that deep breath, eyes wide open, thousand yard stare... He SAW something. 100%.
@@odinnsson9181 😂😂
Agreed, when he has to take a breath cause he's almost out of gas and he knows he ain't stopping anywhere to gas up...breaks my heart.
@@odinnsson9181 If you told him that he’d probably just laugh and say he was taking a breath of air
All these years and that pause he does still gives me chills. Literally my favorite moment in music history.
Almost like he was performing at his own funeral.
That was more Layne Staley on the AiC unplugged. both amazing show's that I was lucky enough to witness when MTV actually had music on the channel !
No Quarter Zeppelin live is my fav music moment
The way his eyes flick open for that second too.. DAMN
@@kevintunaley5079
Me too. As soon as I saw this performance I went out and bought the cd. Still listen to it to this day.
Watched this Live...
I was in college, and just remember everyone talking about it for the rest of the week.
This is a Legend performing at the height of his popularity, energy, and Nirvana just grabbed this moment in time and made it completely theirs.
RIP Kurt
Me too, it changed MTV and ‘unplugging’ forever.
Check!
U so lucky ! Amazing .
I did too. I miss them so much.
Me too. I remember watching their performance live on MTV. Absolutely iconic 🎸🙌🔥
Ladies and Gentlemen That is Nirvana Unplugged after all the years passed and it still hits you deep
Nearly every unplugged episode hits me to my core... because the music of my/our generation was more raw and profoundly real than the world has seen and will probably ever see again.
@@jessicat3762indeed the 90s for music was original and it was felt through our soul
The song, the setting, the performance, the pain.....it seems like a funeral. Little did we know at the time it basically was.
Same as with AIC MTV Unplugged.
He wanted it that way. Why he chose the star Lily's.
Eu na época adolescente, vi isso e achei muito triste, e agora entendo o porque daquilo tudo, triste realidade
Some say Kurt left his soul on stage that night. Epic performance and great video.
And sadly, the building where their performance took place has been demolished 😢
Sim meu Amigo, ele sabia que o fim estava próximo, ele não morreu, foi morto, triste realidade
The exhale/inhale face on Kurt @4:53 has and will always bring me close to tears. Being so close to his death, that face is almost like a last gasp or just a final push. I don't know how to explain it. its haunting.
:(
@@xxaphius Would this have been his very last song performance?
@@TheForcedMiner their last show was march 1st '94 in munich.
i was in tears during this
If you had a wife like Courtney, you would prolly have that "exhale/inhale face" too...
I'm 47 and this still rips my heart out everytime I hear it😭❤
Same
Same age(1975) saw it on MTV live, like nirvâna but Just ok at the Time but this performance is the best mtv unolugged and one of the very best live show i ever seen and litteraly be knocked out After
Actually they finish the show with this song
Always have the CD from 90’
I'm 54 - same.
48, sigue doliendo...
47 from morocco , nirvana fan from early 90s
This will forever be the greatest live performance of all time. Good god the sheer emotion and passion through his voice is unreal
Remember to give Lead belly some love for this amazing track. Kurt definitely brought it center stage with this amazing cover.
Lead Belly's versions are great. He didn't write it, it's a folk song that goes back to the 1800s.
This song introduced me to that amazing genre of music...all heartbreaking but beautiful breaking blues riff
@@sting6ph This isn't a blues
@@JosephScott-ct9sw the original leadbelly is blues
@@sting6ph Nope
Stage set like a funeral. Big white lily flowers(Kurt's request) chandelier and tons of candles. The setting with this song ending the nite.i just dont know it gets any more real than that. Chilling and beautiful at the same time
I lived in Seattle when grunge took over, and absolutely loved Kurt Cobain. It feels like several lifetimes ago, yet these younger people are just now discovering it. It's the weirdest feeling to see them enjoy what was a big part of our lives back then, especially in Seattle. As for the pain, Kurt was constantly in pain. Not just emotionally, but also physically.
Me too. Was in JR High in North Seattle when Kurt died. So many of us were depressed at school after hearing the news. Like one of our hero's died. Still miss a lot of the old venues, Velvet Elvis, DV8, Off Ramp/El Corazon, Ballard Firehouse, etc... Still live here but miss those times. They were special.
Agree. The 90's were a literally different planet. I really miss that place.
I watched it in my college dorm room in Arkansas. I certainly remember his death. Didn’t he supposedly have horrible stomach issues that caused him a lot of pain? I also recall hearing he was in withdrawals at this set, and someone had to give him a Xanax or other benzo just so he could perform.
Nirvana unplugged is hands down their best album.
I agree, and yet there's clearly a plug on that guitar!
Insecticide dawg
There’s a reason that this was the last song they did on Unplugged. It was perfect, and no encore song could ever compare or even add to the show. It was perfect.
Jesus 30 years later and still his voice gives me goose bumps and tear up
this song hits me so hard. I relate to it so much. Kurt was on whole different level. nirvana is for life.
“man, this songs messed up.” lol
heartbreak makes some very powerful music. oh the memories…I’ve always LOVED this rendition. great choice, Derek. this set is still the best unplugged session ever recorded, imho.
Nirvana unplugged... legendary show and epic album. Masterpiece!!!
Safe to say, Kurt takes most of us on the same journey here. One of the rare humans able to scream in perfect pitch.
I love this song. It has very few lyrics, yet it paints such a vivid image that keeps changing and getting more malevolent as it progresses. And that last verse with Kurt's voice... I don't even know how to describe it.
It’s like a dying animal holding onto life, it shows the beauty in life and eventual, inevitable death. You can just feel the raw passion in his voice
This, along with AIC’s Unplugged performance of Down in a Hole absolutely break my heart. Watching both of those back in the ‘90’s filled us with a sick dread as we realised both Kurt and Layne were not long for this world….
Speaking of , it’d be nice to see AIC on the channel.
WOW Derek! Great choice! I completely forgot about this song and how powerful it is / was on 'Unplugged'. R.I.P tortured soul Kurt. I still can't believe he's been gone nearly 30 years.
I loved watching the reactions! The more pain you have gone thru personally the more you feel Kurt’s pain!
This was less than one year from his end!
He bared his teeth and his soul for all the world to see!
That is brave stuff! Absolutely heart wrenching, and depending on how I’m feeling can still makes me shiver even though I’m 48 and have listened to him since the start!
All those reactions show me EVERYONE feels pain!
Thanks to all in this video!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Best transition ever. Alex Hefner's reaction was the best. (Just put down the headphones and walk away) A lot of people talk about the pause, but for me, the note on "shiver" just before kills me dead.
If this performance of this song doesn't make you cry, you're not human
Every cover song they ever performed was so well executed, they really knew how to put their own mark on things 💕
Kurt had a way of making you feel his emotions and then he takes you for a ride.
One of the most important performances by anyone ever
no musical performance is important.
How many people believe he knew this was going to be one of his last real shows and he absolutely left it all on the table at the end you can feel the soul/pain in his singing
We was part of this generation who experienced and lived through Grunge music and the Grunge movement . We gave our heart and soul to make this music . Its real and from the heart full on emotion. That is what Grunge is . REAL ! 💯🔥❤🎵
I remember being a kid watching this on mtv..such a memorable moment that sticks in your mind forever! The entire nirvana unplugged is Kurt showing the world his soul before he left the world
This is emotion released to the public. Yodel-scream-hush pain is just amazing.
I remember watching this on MTV in "94 with my girlfriend on her couch. If we could only freeze time on these great moments. Can I say we were both better and worse in '94? Yes and no. But it would be fun to have a time machine for a week to play around.
He took this Leadbelly song to the next f**kin level !
I think hearing this back when it originally released is when as a teenager I realized that the true power of music was making me feel something true, even if it was sad and painful. Kurt singing this cover was the first to deeply stir my soul and he has never left me. Seeing these folks reflected my own reaction. The only difference was I listened to it on a CD loop for several hours
Great compilation Derek... Kurt has a way of bringing you in when he is in pain...and this shows in this rendition of Leadbelly's song...I will never forget the first time I watched this on MTV, I was in tears.... that last gasp, gets me everytime... what many do not know is that Kurt was in wihdrawal throughout the entire taping, pain? yes pain? angst? yes angst? raw? yes very raw... this was his swansong... and I felt every single gasp, breath, note and silence between the notes... Both him and Layne Staley's lives were lost on my birthday, and every birthday I play this song, and Nutshell by AIC...for I will always hold them both in my heart....My they both REST IN PEACE
So glad I was in my early 20s when this was on unplugged
Kurt will forever be remembered, very talented. May he RIP🙏
This whole album is next level. The set is just incredible. Ive probably listened to it more then any other album!
The look in his eyes at 04:53 is breathtaking and so moving.
7:55 that's actually very true. I remember exactly the setting when I first listened to this specific version of this song. It was 6 am and i hadn't slept a wink all night, so I decided to pull up the playlist of this particular concert and try to fall asleep to that. Despite liking quite a few nirvana songs, for some reason I had never listened to or watched this concert prior. Kurt belting out the chorus at the end put me in a state that I can only describe as a sleep-deprived trance. All the stress I had accumulated that night went away. I'll never forget that.
I will always remember when I heard he was gone 😢😢😢. Luckily I was in NYC with friends who really got it and we comforted each other, cried, talked, and went to a museum. And of course listened to some music.
I've been listening to this song since it debuted and I still get goosebumps.
I remember watching this unplugged when it first came out on MTV lol. Never gets old
I was born in 1971 & for as far back as I can remember I’ve always been a music lover….thruout the years all sorts of other interests have come & gone but music has always remained important & vital at times,I was 20 when Nirvana was 1st getting big & I loved it,all of it :Soundgarden,Pearl Jam,Screaming Trees,Alice in Chains,Helmet,Primus,Butthole Surfers,Ministry,Chili Peppers,Faith No More, etc
The 1 thing I vividly remember thinking about Nirvana in spring of 94 is just how fast they came, brought shit around to the way it should be & then left, that was it ,what started in late 91-early 92 was burning out & burning out fast by 94…..after the release of “Superunknown” it had no place left to go…..It makes me really happy to see the younger generations are not only digging the music but they “get it” gives me hope 🖤🥶now stop trying to be rappers & pick up a instrument already 😉
The world lost one of the greatest soon after this. We will always miss you Kurt. No other voice like yours
I was glad to grow up when all this music you guys are experinceing right now i herd when it first came out
Whether you liked or not Nirvana before that, the Unplugged album made everybody agree that they were a legendary band. Love the edits you're doing, so fucking good.
This is why I like reaction vids.
You take something I didn't pay attention to back in the day n bring out the best. Thanks to all the wonderful talent n commentators. You guys make this music world stay fresh.
Keep up the individual good work and the collective excellent compilation.
✌️😁
I love this song and Kurt's voice sooo much...this entire Unplugged concert is absolutely legendary.
I'm so glad I was able to see Nirvana live in concert. It was my first ever concert too! 1993 in Del Mar, CA.
Nostalgia Train incoming.
This Unplugged episode showed just how talented Kurt was. He put his pain into the songs he sang, and it was fucking beautiful.
Really makes ya wonder how the actual audience reacted , having such an impact for everyone I’ve seen react to this performance still to this day, it must’ve been more than just chilling in person..
They wanted an encore but Kurt wouldn't go back out after that song, saying he couldn't top it.
So beautiful so sad, my favorite song cover by Nirvana. Awesome compilation.
The whole unplugged was just building n building to such an unforgettable performance!! From start to finish you could feel every single emotion that each song he sang!! Still one of the greatest performances of all time
Alive or dead, Kurt can mesmerize anyone. So glad I got to see him live. Rip.❤
I was already a die hard Nirvana fan when I first saw this eagerly anticipated performance live, and was STILL blown away, I felt everything that everyone in this video felt. That yowl at the end shook my soul to its core, and still does to this day.
This song is enough emotional as it is and seeing those reactions really brought the tears to my eyes, I love his/their art so much.
The impact this has on me still rocks my core of my being. Rip Kurt. ❤
Oh yes. Brilliant choice! Thank you for this one - I know it is a lot of work and for us it is ALWAYS worth the wait.
Derek, you consistently crush it with these comp vids. Awesome song choice. RIP Kurt - gone too soon but you left us with so much 💗
There will never be another Kurt Cobain. RIP Kurt
Ms. Bisscute NAILED It! "Kurt SMACK me in the face with the Surprise."
You know having lived through that time….having them blow my mind, then watching this when it premiered, and as the pretty chick said “remembering where I was”, it’s been hard to watch any of the MTV Unplugged show after the fact and after what happened shortly after. Kurt’s death hit a lot of us hard. I’ve avoided it for years but DB, as always, you made it shine in a touching tribute. Great editing, great song choice going less mainstream, and just an awesome job as always.
Trent gave this song to cash after hearing it . Powerful powerful version the best cover ever done . My dad told me i remind him of every johnny cash song he ever heard , this brought my old man to tears ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Every Christmas when I go home to Louisiana, I always make a stop by Lead Bellys grave. It's amazing how much of rock that man put in motion.
Glad these babies dug this. After y'all get into the Lead Belly primer, check out some of the bluegrass, like Louvin Brothers or Bill Monroe. Good modern interpretation by Fantastic Negrito too. (All these as "In the Pines")
I know I’m a broken record at this point, but your videos are the best edited compilations on the ‘tube.
Also, that fry / scream / stare at 4:50 or so is devastating
'I would SHIVERRAAAARRRGGHHH....(take a breath)....the whole...night throughhhhh....'
He was at his worst on H at this time. The whole performance affects you very deeply if your've been or are in that hell. Gets me every time time. I KNOW that scream.
You cannot tell me all of them do watch or hear this song for the first time! It’s a masterpiece. Where did they live the last 30 years?
You'd be shocked lol. I grew up in an area where most people listened to hip hop and r & b.
@@rbriggs89 poor guy
It just proves again what a fantastic songwriter he was... ❤️
Believe or not this song is a cover.
You're absolutely right! Lead Belly was a great song writer. I have this funny feeling you were talking about Kurt though... weird.
@@andrewvanorden2336 leadbelly didn't write it either. It's a very old (1800s old) folk/blues song.
@@frostymugger95it is sorta like Hurt with J Cash. It is his song now
Cómo alguien puede trasmitir tanto.un talento unico
Thanks, Derek! I always tear up when I watch your videos. All of the raw and honest emotion from the reactors gets me every time. Keep making these videos!
I was excited for them to see the Howl at the end.
Kurt canta com tanta dor, que é impossível não se emocionar....Brazill
Incredible watching the emotions of the people listening to this, it is a powerful song that will live on for a long time. RIP Kurt
One of the best if not the best unplugged shows ever! Kurt Cobain was absolutely brilliant!
Doesn't matter how much time passes or how often I hear this, still hits me like the first time. Emotion floods my body, chills up and down my spine, my arms, everywhere all at once. There's no stopping it. In those moments, it's as if Kurt's spirit is channeling my body. It's so powerful! No other vocalist has moved me in quite the same way. It's beyond hearing the voice, the words, the melody and somehow, you have become one with him, feeling his soul. DAMNN, hits so hard!
I love seeing people connecting through a beautiful piece of music! Music connects us as humans! Kurt Cobain was one of the GOATs!
Kurt was a one of a kind human being, such a beautiful and tortured soul, an artist in every sense of the word
RIP Kurt. You'll forever be the voice of Grunge, and along with Eddie [Vedder], my voices of the awesome 90s!
Kurt is the face of grunge. Everyone can do an Eddie impersonation and everyone over a certain age will know exactly who you're doing because it's an iconic sound. But Layne Staley and Chris Cornell were, in my opinion, the best vocalists of the grunge era. Eddie probably had better technique than Layne but I like Layne's timbre more.
I love these compilations, and bravo for editing them together so masterfully.
I love each and everyone's reaction to this song. And thank you all for choosing to react to this song. I used to have cassette tapes of Nirvana in highschool and would listen to them over and over. And I loved this song.
Nice job on this. I watched this on MTV nearly 30 years and then and now, this performance is absolutely chilling.
Kurt had laser vision. When he pauses for a breath, he looks through your soul! I watched it on t.v. when it was on MTV! It still gives me chills almost 40 years later.
I love Nirvana so much, probably one of the greatest bands of all time, but I love that their influences include Leadbelly. You can tell when musicians are in love with music and how they seek out all those little nooks and crannies of musical goodness. I think Leadbelly would be absolutely in love with this version if he had heard it.
MTV's Nirvana Unplugged is in the top 5 complete albums of all time. I will fight you about that :)
Pasan los años y estas canciones te emocionan, te dejan ver que la musica no debe ser boba o sosa, sino fuerte, directa y triste🥲🥲🥲
I love to see young people feel the same way we felt when all these songs came out.
Greetings from Athens, Greece
top job once again Mr Brooks, as always.haven't heard that song for so many years, keep 'em coming :)
With this song and performance closing out the Unplugged session, I don't think there was any other song that could have been sung and performed any better and more powerful than this one right here.
Derek Brooks, thank you for compiling these. That was amazing.
Always has been and always will be a complete masterpiece of a performance and song
Dereck....you made this and release this on Kurt's birthday (around) been looking at it the whole day...make me cry....thanks and my respect for your lovely and altruistic work.
Dude your videos really do get you to hear a song you've been hearing all the time your whole life like it's the first time.
Thank you for this video. Art is encapsulating and honestly imparting the essence of a powerful emotional experience to others. This is Art
amazing as always. loved this!
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen on here. Bravo!!
Hell yeah this version is so haunting. Great to see you choose this song. Epis as always
Amazing edit! Thanks for this!
I would put this up there in the Top 5 live performances of a song ever caught on camera. As far as I'm concerned this is the apex moment of the whole Nirvana arc.
Beautiful, precious Kurt. Thinking of him makes me cry and smile. April will be 30 years since Kurt was stolen from us. It seems like yesterday and it seems like 100 years. Rest in Peace 🙏 😊
