Dude you are amazing, i’ve never played an instrument before I got a bass two weeks ago. Tool is my favorite band ever which is unheard of for a 16 year old to like Tool lmao, but watching you play my favorite songs is just so inspiring. I watched one of your videos and i’ve been working on playing the intro for Pneuma for two days now. Hardest part for me right now is building up the calyces and finger strength. I barely put my bass down and my hands feel like hell, but nothing can kill my drive to pick it up and play😂 Just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do because you help so many people like me. Rock on brother 🤘
You are very welcome :) You're gonna be a great bass player if you keep that up. Just keep playing things that you like (like Tool) and you'll get there!
Very very cool. I just jammed along with you. I don't suppose you have 'bass only' version? This will be my next guitar cover. It would be great to mix them.
Really cool! Love this song! But thing is unclear to me. How in 4:59 do you start play a riff and then THE SAME changes to 6/4? I also becomes a little slower
Do you mean like, how do I know when to suddenly play the riff at 4:59? Cause that is quite difficult. It's technically just 2 beats until the riff kicks in, but it's very difficult to time it.
@@LeoBassCovers2 extremely difficult because the accent is very different from standard 4/4. But how does the same riff change to 6/4? And why does it become slower? I'm asking about the change in 5:03
Tempo changes I guess. Happens all the time with bands that don't record with a click track. And about the 6/4, it could technically be any time signature there. All depends on if 4:59 is a new bar or not.
Thats a very accurate and well played cover ! I just had a question, does someone know how to play songs like this one without a pick ? I mean, i do not know any way to play on multiple strings on a bass by hand.
Thanks! These songs can be played with fingers, but the chords are a little tricky. Flamenco style works for chords, but you can also quickly slide down from string to string with your strumming finger
Whew, this one’s really hard 🥵 But I just bought a new set of strings to put on my old bass for the sole purpose of learning how to play this song. Can’t let my money go to waste though, so I’d best start practicing... a lot. On a side note, it’s kinda funny how this is definitely one of the easier sounding songs on Lateralus, but when you actually listen closely and try to play it, it’s much harder than some of the songs that sound much more difficult to play (i.e. Schism, The Grudge).
Hey Leo! So I came back to this song today, after recently completing my pedalboard. I’ve pretty much matched all of Justin’s pedals, except the impossible to find vintage lot (Guyatone trem, Colorsound Fuzz, Fox FuzzWah, Rx OD), but I just noticed there is no reverb pedal! Does he actually use reverb here? Would you happen to know what kind, and if not, what kind did you go with? I know it’s kind of a persnickety question, and I’ve already been hounded for replicating his board, but I can’t help it…it’s what I like. Anywho, thanks again Leo! Hope you’ve been well!
Hmm, maybe it wasn't a pedal but just some post-processing. Reverb is something that almost always gets added after a recording so for the studio album, it probably just got added on top of the track. Not sure about the live settings. A reverb pedal is something that most bassists probably don't have or use.
honest question: why tune the strings down when you have a fifth string-- presumably tuned to B in the first place?? is this possible to play otherwise?
For accuracy's sake :) But during the actual recording, I did actually use the fifth string because it's more steady. Justin however, did actually drop his low D to a B so it is possible. I also made a 5 string cover of this song to show how you could also play it with the fifth string :)
Nice vid, but can I recommend you make it so the yellow highlight in the tab move slightly less early? I feel like it would sync with the song/your playing better that way.
Thanks! I can't do anything about it now with the videos that I have. The weird thing is that on different browsers and systems, it shows different syncing. On my PC in chrome, it seems in sync. When I open it in let's say windows media player, it is not in sync. In VLC it is slightly too early. But I will try to be extra careful
@@LeoBassCovers2 yeah theres always a latency inconsistency between what programs you play the videos with. Cant do much about it. Though it may be more extreme of a difference for me since I watch these with bluetooth headphones so it may not be much of a problem for others

I have had comments about the same issue from people who also used bluetooth earbuds/headphones who had the same latency issues. So who knows, it might be connected
Honestly, I cheated so hard. With a 5 string, you can basically string-skip your way through this song. It's not easy, but somewhat doable. So in the end, like with Prison Sex, I didn't adjust anything. If I was to do it the proper way, I'm sure I would ruin this bass so I'd just go to a guitar store

It's always pre-recorded which is why you are typically able to see that the bass isn't even plugged in. I explain more about this in my "Behind the Cover" series, but doing it like this actually allows me to create more covers.
I'm so confused on why he didn't just keep the regular tuning and use his b string. Am I missing something? Edit: Actually now that I think about it, the strumming would probably be the reason.
