Before I started drinking whiskey I gave a Willet pot Still to a friend for a house warming gift. After finding out how bad it is I called him up. He was very gracious saying the best whiskey is gifted whiskey. But he still has plenty for me when I come over.

Also, our hosts have a touch of class that many other YT whiskey channel hosts lack. Maybe some like the rough humor. Maybe some like seeing a young man who tries to be both young and clueless and wise beyond his years...... There are a handful of whiskey reviewers that I trust and respect.

I’m a complete noob and have tasted only a handful of different bourbons. But I had a chance to go to a couple of tastings in KY knowing nothing about Willett other than that they were open and had availability when I was looking. The Pot Still I tasted there was the first bourbon I felt I really liked at first taste. Didn’t hesitate to buy a bottle, and only later saw the hate it was getting in the community. Really let me know right away that you can’t trust anyone else’s palate but your own.

I find it so fascinating how all of our taste are so different. I have sampled many bourbon’s over these recent years getting into the hobby, and I absolutely love Willet. It reminds me of my grandmother’s fruitcake, I get fruitcake every time I drink it and I really enjoy it.

Some quick history on Willett. Willett was founded in the mid 1930s, and then became Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD) in the mid 1980s. KBD specialized in sourcing from various distilleries some of which are rumored to be Stitzel Weller, Brown Foreman, Heaven Hill, and even Buffalo Trace. In 2011 they started going by Willett again and started distilling shortly after.

Saw another video a couple months ago or so on “It’s Bourbon Night” channel and they had the old bottle and the new distillate. A discernible difference in the bottles were that the wax seal was no longer gold but grey and that the barcode was no longer on the side but the bottom of the bottle. They felt the new distillate was far better than the old. Have yet to see the new stuff on shelves

A good friend got the 1.75L version as a gift from a client earlier this year and invited me over to try some 😬
I tried to be very... diplomatic with my tasting and reaction, but there was no denying that you can find SO MUCH better whiskey for less. I would love to get an empty bottle to use as a decanter or infinity bottle, but I'm not willing to buy a new one and suffer through it to get to that point.

When we were at the distillery last year, they did confirm they had changed the recipe. I told them I had a bottle from 2019 at home. They said they'd be curious to know if I could tell a difference between a 2022 bottle and the 2019 - so I bought a bottle. Wasn't a fan of either but the food at the distillery is delicious!

It’s always been wild to me how much grief this bottle gets. For as many “Kentucky purists” as there are that bash on everything that isn’t the old way, they seem to forget that bourbon was born on a pot still and not a column still. The funky pot still notes are where it’s at 👌

It always shocks me how much people hate on Willett. I've always enjoyed it, and I always have a bottle around. Kurt may have hit on the reason, though. I normally add a couple Luxardo cherries and a touch of cherry juice to my Willett, so I sweeten it up. Maybe that's why I like it. Not my favorite, but still one of my go-tos.

I bought it mostly for the bottle. I started my new infinity bottle with it, in 3 months I've added like 6 different whiskies to it and to be honest right now it tastes great! Getting back to the origional Willett's that was in the bottle in the first place. In my opinion on a scale from 1 to 10 for me it's like a 3.5 there is nothing special about the flavor of this whiskey.

I have toured Willett Distillery several times and I have purchased bottles of the pot still bourbon there, along with Noahs Mill and Johnny Drem. Then the Pot Still was ok, but on a 3rd bottle I noticed, this isnt the same. I took this bottle to a bottle share party at a hotel I was staying at in Bardstown. I had met some people at breakfast and on a tour later at Makers and they invited me. So I took a new bottle of Pot Still, I think I was the only person who had any of it. So, yes it still is lousy, but at the distillery tasting it seemed ok. ???

In case, one might not have heard of Pure Kentucky, it is a product from the Willet Distillery and comes in at 109 proof. And yes, it has a place behind the bar.

What are the batch numbers of these two? It's possible you did not buy one of the newer lots. I just don't get the flavors you are getting, and we are usually a little closer than that. I will admit I do not buy into the narratives and tend to make my own decisions.

Willett didn’t fire up a pot still until 2012 it was originally sourced form what I think was heaven hill when they introduced the bottle to there lineup so the age should be around 10-11 years in the bottle

I'm really confused that on most UA-cam channels this bottle really downgraded. My bourbon journey started after I tasted in Louisville KY this whiskey and purchased couple bottles. Both of them were really good. I have one bottle more (got as a gift last year) that not opened yet. Wondering if I'll agree with you after I taste it again. What I am really hate is a Willet 4 yrs. green neck rye ;-)

I’ve only had Potstill in recent years. I have drank 3 and have 2 on the bar. I personally love it. But I smoke cigars and my flavor notes may be different.

The Willett Pot Still is just OK and basic. Was hugely disappointed for the price tag. NOW to get through the rest of the bottle and make a citronella oil candle for our camping trips. 🤣

well you all like Four Roses, I been to the Four Roses Distillery and the bottling places had many tastes, I do not like any of them, conclusion, everyone has different tastes. the People at Four Roses are really nice, I can not say that about the Woodford Distillery.

Like probably 75% of Willet Pot Still bottle purchasers, bought this very early in my bourbon journey - mainly because of the cool bottle. Taken 4 years to almost get through it - giving samples to friends...but it will become an infinity bottle soon. Quite a few bottles getting low, so there might be a massive bottle kill in the near future to jump start the infinity. Debating whether to leave any of the Willet juice in there at all for posterity or start completely afresh.
Thanks for the update - don't see any more pot still bottles in the future
