I like how you cut through the nonsense and get to the point: "This bourbon's lousy". No dancing around the point, no attempts at dressing up the conclusion. I'm sure there are some real finds in the independent distiller world, but my experience has been that most of it's overpriced and not that good. Especially the "green" quality of a lot of them. I can't afford to experiment but I'll watch to see what you come up with that might be a good find if I want to venture outside of my "tried and true" brands.

I know exactly what it mean, he’s like watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and they give the longest drawn out answers to fill airtime.
He’s doing the same thing when he should get to the point much quicker with a five-minute vs ten-minute video and he would improve his UA-cam analytics also and get more views and subscribers.

I just got a bottle in Louisville this week and I think I scored a good one. I also picked a bottle of 1792 small batch and a Starlight BIB bourbon. I was fortunate enough to visit the Starlight distillery in Southern Indiana. FANTASTIC experience. From the ambiance of the tasting room to the hospitality and warmth of the staff, they hit on all cylinders. QUALITY bourbon.
And the best part? The tastings consisted of any seven spirits they offered... FOR $16. 👍😳👍

After watching both part 1 and 2, it makes me realize we all search for different, unique bottles just because we’re all looking for “something “ only to keep finding disappointment’s. Thanks again for your honesty. The only caveat is that everybody has different tastes. For example, my blade and bow is about 1.5 years old and I loved it when I first bought it. And now 1.5 years later, it’s not in my wheelhouse anymore. Who knows what happened?

    • @slbdrinks

Ya thats a bit unusual. I have had some whiskey that I didn’t like but as my palate grew I came around to it. Example, peated scotch.
We all have different palates that’s a fact.

Another great review. I appreciate how you also point out how many of these were surprising disappointments from distillers who had delivered quality before, or products that didn't live up to the hype, in your (admittedly educated) opinion. On the other hand, you don't, to use an old phrase, "damn them from the altar", recognizing that other peoples tastes differ. This is why I like this - it isn't a "let's pick on the bottom shelf" session, but rather a "These didn't taste as good as their price tags suggested" session.

Love your broadcasts and your frankness. I am a relatively new Bourbon junkie and these help a lot! I also appreciate that you gave us a frame of reference on your dislike of dark chocolate.....Because I might like the Woodford, because I will only eat real dark chocolate. The higher the percentage the better! And once you get away from the sugary sweetness in fake chocolate bars there's all kinds of flavors just like in whiskey. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for this video. I've picked up B&B and the Willet a few times and grabbed something else. Woodford Double Oak, Malt and Wheat are some of my favorite lower priced sippers. Most reviews of $100+ Woodford's are usually not favorable on UA-cam. The Chocolate Rye refers to a type of rye called Chocolate Rye. Balcones uses it in their Texas Rye and that doesn't seem to get any praise at all, just worst lists. I like other Balcones products but that one I'll stay away from unless I just can't something to buy. Maybe chocolate rye should just not be used.
I love finished whiskeys and I love gin (my first love in spirits) but whiskeys finished in gin casks???? I'll pass.

Dark chocolate is an acquired taste. You have to start with the 65-70% stuff before you take on the 85% stuff. Seems like you need to be a 85% chocolate fan to try that Woodford Reserve bottle. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for doing these Kurt. Word of mouth and other opinions are key for finding out about bourbons to try, and finding out about ones to let go by is key as well! You can only get to so many distilleries in a lifetime. We've done parts of the bourbon trail twice (we aren't close), but they are pretty spread out, and you only have so much abibe ability in a day, so it can't be all about what one has been able to try personally, so these videos really help. Plus, you guys keep it fun, so it's pretty entertaining at the same time. Keep it up!

Great review. I actually enjoy the Willet as do many of my friends. The Blade and Bow tastes like soap to me. Kurt, enjoy these reviews. However I need to ask, do you consume bitter vegetables (broccoli, green beans, spinach, Brussels sprouts) and the like? The reason I ask is to determine where your bitter taste sensitivity lies. In this video and some of your others I have watched, you describe bitter notes in the bourbons, and for me they have the right amount of bitter for balance. Not saying you're wrong, but asking myself why I disagree with some of your assessments. thx.

    • @slbdrinks
      @slbdrinks  2 роки тому

Very good question. I love all vegetables including bitter. Raw onion is about the only vegetable I can’t eat but can when cooked down.
Compari is a bit to bitter for me in most cocktails. Suze is way to bitter if you know that one.

Have you considered doing something like a "Top 5 whiskeys I ALMOST regretted buying" video? An example of mine recently is Doc Swinson's Rye. The first couple pours I had were really disappointing. It's not an expensive whiskey, but I expected it to be decent. I was ready to give it away or just use it as a mixer. Well, a few weeks after those initial pours I went back to it just out of curiosity and wouldn't you know it... this thing is pretty good! I don't know if it opened up or my palette was just off before, but yeah I dig it now. Curious if you've had similar experiences.

When I buy ryes I tend to buy 4 . 1 for me the others are stored for the future . My late wife use to tell me “ your never going to sell those so you may as well enjoy them . That went for my wine collection as well . About 2005-2006 I purchased 4 bottles of michter’s 10 year old rye . Willett pot still recently changed a bit. I assume Willett is using more of their own distillate. The new bottles bar code is now gold and the wax stamp looks a bit different and the whiskey taste slightly different. I like Willett products and it has that unique Willett nose and taste but I do get the cedar or young wood flavor you talk about. It’s a lot more prevalent in Old Bardstown, which I’m not a huge fan of. Noah’s Mill and Johnny Drum are my favorites.

Blade & Bow is one of my favorite low proofers, but it needs air. I find it much richer, sweeter and tastier a couple of months post-neck pour. Your bottle looks like there's just a sip gone, so it just might grow on you over time if you give it a chance.

The same for Cooper Craft 100 proof which is hot out of the bottle. Open bottle, taste the whiskey, and then let it sit for a couple of months. Try again. Now you'll have a whiskey that will stand up to Old Forrester whiskeys.

I have a buddy who is a bourbon tasting savant helping me along and we've found some high rye bourbons to bridge the gap. I think I'm finally starting to enjoy the style, but I don't think I'll ever like the REALLY sweet stuff or the ones that taste like oak and vanilla with nothing else.
