    Wild Turkey is a sour Mash. A lot of whiskies that don't specifically state it, are sour mashes.

      i agree, i think most bourbons are sour mash, i recall only a few do sweet mash like hard truth, wilderness trail and peerless

      @Fatherrick1963 18 днів тому +3

      I believe unless it states “Sweet Mash” like Hard Truth stuff, it’s presumed to be sour mash, whether stated on the label or not.

    • @coolzog
      @coolzog 17 днів тому

      Is there any advantage to a sour mash? I would assume quality would be better with a sweet mash as you're not re-using ingredients?

    • @whisk-e-y_problems9075
      @whisk-e-y_problems9075 17 днів тому +1

      @@coolzog It's all about controlling fermentation. Years ago when sanitation practices in distilleries were not quite what they are today, using the sour mash process was a way to lower the pH of the mash to help prevent bacteria contamination while providing conditions more favorable for the yeast. Now, like so many other things in whiskey-making, it's largely just tradition. A lower pH will likely have some impact on what compounds are produced during fermentation, but it's hard to determine if someone would be able to tell the difference in the final product of sweet mash vs. sour mash after distillation and several years of barrel aging.

    I’ve only recently gotten deeper down the bourbon/whiskey road, got my first Shenk’s (at the store, was like $110). Was super excited to get it, waiting for my brother to fly into town next month to crack it open and try with him. Even if it’s not the best release from them ever it’ll be a fun pour/experience to share

    I like sweetness in bourbon if it is balanced with some other flavors - richness, spiciness, oakiness, and even a mild amount of tannic bitterness. When bourbons are primarily just sweet, I find them to be thin and watery, even at higher proofs. Additional: In Seattle, they are $160+. I will spend that on a single malt, but I can't see myself spending that much on most bourbons.

    Man, y'all really should've read up on this years releases on the Michter's page, they give some nice detail for each year of both whiskeys in the page notes. I've not tasted the 2024s yet, but they began including some bourbon with malted rye in the mash of last year's Bomberger's and that continued this year for both Shenk's and Bomberger's.
    Bomberger's is a straight KY bourbon partially aged in Chinquapin Oak (experimented with different toast & char levels over the years)
    Shenk's is a high-rye sour mash whiskey that has seen some barrels each year aged in either French or Chinquapin Oak
    I've generally found Shenk's to be more interesting but both have been consistently good whiskey to me.

    Wait, I’ve seen the video with the M20 but Trent said he has *every* Michter’s outside M25 rye - does that include the unicorn of all unicorns, Celebration?

      The 15 and 16 year bourbons are both terrific. If you find em at Costco it's a steal

    Hidden gems - I overpay at least once a year for a bottle of Shenks. I’ve never tried the Bomberger (yet). My only complaint is the lack of info (aka transparency) on the Shenks label.

    Had the shenks just the other day and wasn’t impressed for the price. Very good but 90 proof at that cost is a no for me.

    In my local store, both of them sold for $130 instantly 😂I'm missed them twice. But is $130 worth to buy?

    As is way too common in the current bourbon market, another overpriced underwhelming limited release. Glad a few distillers are focusing on great whiskey at a solid price like Bardstown with the origin releases

    I've heard that Michter's is using Old Forester as the source of some of their bottles.

    Just opened the Bombergers the other night. I thought it was excellent. Drinks way below its proof. Lots of chocolate.

    I have the 2019 Shenk's and the 2023 and they are fantastic. I've heard that the Shenk's 2024 is completely different from previous years. Trust me, I had nothing to do with it! ; )

    Bombergers MSRP for 2024 is 120. Shenks is $110. Both are elevated over last year.

    Bought the 2023 Shenks a couple of weeks ago, the 2024 wil probably not be avalible here in Norway for another 6-7 months.
