A lot of time and effort went into this video, in order to learn all of the new backstep mechanics that were introduced in the DLC. I couldnt have made this video without the help of the community, so as always, thank you for everyone who supports me.

I actually hope the heavy load shennanigans stay. Thats some smash melee tech shit right there lmao
Tekken korean backdash type shit
This reminds me of Evade Lance builds from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate where you just backhop through everything with Evasion +3.
That was a classic, iirc it was 0,4 secs s per backhop and you could chain 3 for 1,2 secs s in total. So fun but also broken af
someone who knows mh no way
I remember literally backhopping through dalamadur's laser with this LOL. It looked so silly
It's been so long since I played 4U I forgot that was a thing.
They should just cut the amount of s in half
TY Mr Rust Bucket, now I will honour this tech by throwing +1 extra shit pot at swift slash gamers :D
Thats what i like to hear 🤘
what about a hefty shit pot instead?
@@m.s6832 i always have one just for that occassion
Ah yes, fellow swift slash braindead gameplay hater, greetings
@@m.s6832 Thank you for reminding me that those exist. I crafted one to deal with swift slash users
The backstep i-frames seem powerful from what I've fought but I haven't fought many people using it.
It’s because they take some skill
I was trying to fish like in dark souls 3 just today, but felt totally different. Maybe for that other people prefered using Classic method fight

0:14 Little fun fact, while DS1 did not have s on backsteps if you were wearing the Dark Wood Grain Ring the unique ninja backflip did have s.
There are I-frames on normal backstep it's just a small amount. If you go fight in the try hard scene of ds1 right now you will see people backstepping through attacks
@@DankSoulsVoid literally me. ToadMode The Goat
@@DankSoulsVoid are you sure it has s ? ds1 backstep basically gave you infinite poise (you can backstep through sen's fortress boulders) but I'm pretty sure you got 0 s. I could be wrong tho!
@@yllifazlija1811 i discovered they had s but naked when a friend tried to hit me out of an emote in a duel and i panicked and queued a backstep the moment the emote ended
@@dragonwings206 I see. Do I need to be naked in game or IRL for the backsteps to have s ?
Every fishers wet dream
I will say, it made fishing less rewarding. It was free every time, never had to work for it. I wont be using this much in the future, but maybe it will inspire the next gen of fishas

When I heard about this addition to ER I immediately got giddy. We still play DS2 over in the DS2 community because its just really dang fun. Backstep s are one of the reasons!
What is this ds2 community you talk about? I want to play again but none of my friends like it
@@dbzsuperfan711 I’m definitely hanging out in the Orange Arena discord . It’s a primarily ds2 PvP centered discord and right now we have a member figuring out the true frame data for each weapon. Even though the game is 10 years old, it still feels fresh!
absolutely my favorite mechanic returning from DS2. I knew a video like this would come out in no time, much appreciated.
The editing has gotten extremely good. Glad to have witness the rust evolution!
I'm glad you put some DkS2 references 👌
best pvp
I'm going to get so many weird funny backstabs with this. Great video Rust!
What a blessing of a channel you have been to this community 🙏
Ty for educating us.
I got an ad from Chuck Norris to work out. This is wild. 😂 great video! Appreciate the knowledge and illustrations.
LOK
Thank you for explaining what it exactly does. I was really confused when I got it.
Props to you for going so far into the game without dodging a single attack. I assume you'd know what i-frames are and how they work if you actually pressed the dodge button at least once.
@@Ron_Jambo_??? Why u talking down
This is very helpful, thank you!
Very informative. Thank you!
thank youuu! I was trying to find this!
Bruh. I just found you on duels as I was watching your video. Backstep backstab it's crazy
Time to learn how to backstep properly instead of reverse quickstepping. Excellent vid Rust.
This was very enjoyable to watch.
Great video all around!
Welp, time to spend years of my life mastering heavy roll zweihander backsteps.
I've been backstabbing people with roll+backstep or just backstep and it's been reallllyy fun trying to land them. it did feel really fast so this vid helped clarify some stuff
So this is the video you were talking about... This seems kind of broken with enough time put in to make it consistent, but at least swift slash now has some amount of a counter with FCF backsteps.
I have to agree that the tali is not healthy in a fundamental sense but like you have said previously; the DLC has violated what was left of original souls PVP formula, and there are too many of these weapon and tali combinations to choose from that it almost no longer matters. I'm sure the comp scene will filter it out but for the average PVPer, it's a deafeningly bitter end. Sorry for the gloom, great vid as always Mr bucket!
Fair opinion 🤘
Balance patches will come out, too early to call this the end imo
Typically if it's not intended, then I consider it to be unfair when playing against most people. It's like playing a game against someone who doesn't know the secret rules. They didn't know they were playing a different game and never practiced it.
It's not so bad. This happened with every Souls game DLC. They release crazy stuff to entice people and it gets abused for a while before getting balanced out.
Relax a little, guy... This stuff just came out, the "souls pvp formula" hasn't been violated. Every game has had its bkss and its dragonbone fist, between time and some work by the devs everything settles into place in good time
Finally, I can beat the swift slash spammers, thank you, you’re the goat
Dear Mr Bucket of the Rust variety, I wish to thank you for sharing this piece of knowledge with us, I am now backstabbing people like there's no tommorow. Crafting some shit pots to yeet in thine name.
Havin so much fun with this shit, hope it doesnt become a huge problem😵💫😵💫 great video as always💯💯💯
Glad to see someone praising the cool things that were possible in dark souls 2 pvp. It was the best pvp the series ever got
i really like the balance of the heavy load cancel bc its locked behind having to use that specific block animation which is only on some doodoo weapons. it would seem broken bc almost infinite s but the skill floor is monsterously high and the lack of neutral from the weapons used is a bit of a pain. id say its one of the most fun mechanics tho bc it has some insane depth
I agree for the most part, but on the receiving end it can just be a nightmare to play against
@@Rust_BKT i found that i can bait easilly because when i used it i struggled hard to do consecutive tight inputs under panic so it could be more of a mental game if you really deep it. i know that annoying feeling though…
While it might be fun for the person using it, fighting someone with such small windows to punish is definitely not fun, especially when the weapons it works for tend to have HA, making it even riskier to try & punish.
I love it. They already had unique movement when you followed up a back step with an attack, now you can actually use that tech
Really good vid rust
Thx brother 🤘
Great video brother 🙏
Man, I missed having a real backstep. I keep doing it from deep DkS2 muscle memory in pvp so im stoked
Your videos are so good!!!
Finally a ring to support my low poise fashion ravioli addiction 😩
I was going to lament how much more reactive and passive this might make pvp, but then you pointed out it's use on swift slash spammers.
AoW spammers in general.
Good stuff as aways

I backstabbed a swift slash user and lost because of input drop smh! But thanks for this video. I only attempted this because I saw your video.
Very cool thank you 👍
dang. this seems like some really strong tech
I'll say it because no one else is brave enough to. I pogged.
He's just so slick with it
Does anyone remember which video it was when rust just randomly started talking about castlevania?
I sure do love new defensive options that can be used in duels and in general without a timer! *looks sadly at Deflecting Hardtear*
thanks for the plug og

Seriously enjoyed that game
I USE this talisman like too days now and it's relly better then rolling
Thank you for showcase a counter to those swift slash spammer, really flashy too.
Also can you take a look at Deflect Tear mix ? I feel it make stun recovery really quick after a successful deflect compare to just block.
I was able to deflect Swift Slash and backstabbed them with this talisman.
Yea i havent gotten to mess with the deflect tear yet but it looks pretty strong, i plan to do some research in it
Wow, so fat roll finally turns good with this tailisman.
One of the best video's I've ever seen. Now i can punish those backhand slash players.
This video is so good
Nice vid Rust, good info!
Have you looked into the changed parryframes that came with patch 1.12?
i did, but i wasnt able to find any changes. likely they literally forgor to imlpiment the proposed changes. might see something in the next hotfix tho
@@Rust_BKT Oh really! Here I've been running around trying to parry with daggers, fist-weapons and medium shields (normal parry) to see if I noticed any differences, which I'm ashamed to say I thought I did, lmao.
My favourite least favourite talisman
Fuck this thing and my small addiction to it
makes me wonder how this affects the free backstep you get from the Smithscript Cirque's guard counter animation
Doesnt apply. Feints fall into the category of an attack animation, not an actual backstep
Yeah, i can confirm it does't work with any of those weapons thay has an backstep attack; Thrusting swords, curvedswords. HTS, Throwing daggers, great katanas.
Why do you use Last Rites in the segments when you're using the Treespear? Does it happen to give a bigger boost than other buffs that you'd use, or is it for another reason?
It stacks
13:00 boy Rust, was I happy to hear that (: f those flame balls
Can the new verdigris talisman mitigate the defense reduction of the crucible feather talisman when you are heavy rolling?
14:06 You broke that last guy's brain.
Haven’t tried that new talisman yet! And now I think I won’t lmao
so the winged crucible talisman + the talisman of all crucibles do not stack the I-frame extention for rolls or do they? also, do you know if the physics flask tear that extents I-frames when rolling, stack with the talisman?
@@dero4378 they do not
@@Rust_BKT alright. thx
Will definitely be trying this out, but for curiosity's sake, do you know if the all crucibles talisman has the same number of I-frames as the fine feather?
They work differently. The triple one is that same as the single versions but with much less damage negations to get the benefits of all in 1. But the value of how much the triple cricible talisman effects s is the same as the fine feather
@Rust_BKT Nice, thanks Rust!! I was considering something like that for more of a glass cannon troll build with the lamenter's mask, it might actually be semi-viable if I can get the backstep grab down with a safer fine feather build first 👀
Never been a fan of souls PvP (thought I would as a For Honor player) but on PC and the horrendous frametime issues along with randomly connecting to people with various ping just make it unsavory. But man, this entire video was a really great showcase that I enjoyed watching all the way through. Awesome examples, and commentary for the actual demonstration clips was great.
Ive never played for honor but it seems like its alot of fun, lots of depth
Last guy thought you were cheating, I don't blame them lol

Yeah, when I first found it, I immediately went to test it out, being a big fan of backsteps in ds2. Iframe to recovery ratio is nuts, especially considering the way the lat plays into it. It's no skill ds2 backsteps, but with all the other crazy stuff in the game, it's doubtful that most will even give it a try. I'll still have some fun with it though
Real question is: does it give i frames to curved sword and perfume r2 cancel backstep. Ill be trying this tonight.
thank you for this rust!!!
Dks2 footsies, the good ol days. Thanks for the no-bs review. I assume it transfers to the all-in-one talisman as well, with the obvious other ups and downs?
I'm tired of seeing creators use the current unbalanced dlc weapons when trying to make a point about fundamental stuff, so this was freshening.
Dude I miss DS2 so bad, first souls I got to play for its lifetime. I remember backstep parrying so many people off the bridge map in the arena. Shit was so much fun, even the old broken monastery scimitar parries. Hadouken, dual washies with throne watcher armor on the iron bridge, forbidden sun spam, actually cool sorceries. That shit was so much fun
Elden ring is where i first got started but ive played some ds2, i wish i was around for it, all the cool shit from that game seems so much fun
DS3 takes 2nd for sure, anyone else remember Modful X? He was the let me solo her of darkeater midir, granted he wasn’t that good, just helped a shit load of people to cheese him throughout Xbox communities.
@@Rust_BKT I wish we could go back, only thing I will 100% agree on was soul memory was stupid, having to reload saves every day just to stay in the populated pvp bracket was so annoying
@@lupuskitsu248fyi, it was abit of a hassle but you can actually swap to the ring that prevents you from getting souls after every duel. But yeah soul memory really ruined pvp especially before they release that ring.
Sword+axe powerstance my beloved
Time to master fat roll, I guess. Perfect block? Who needs it
I don't think I have enough skill to use this but it looks cool.
all about practice
Is the effect exactly the same for the talisman of all crucibles or whatever that one's called
@@disinterestedhomo6002 yep
Mind if I ask why do you say this Talisman is not competitively viable? Is it simply that a competitive player won't leave themselves open to a back step backstab?
Basically yea. For one thing, tournaments often come down to 2-300 hp difference, and an extra 10% damage taken with this talisman would likely cost you a win just mathematically, and with the competative meta being around shamshir, thrusting sword, and patas focused around block canceled r1s and max range punishes, youre not likely going to find a window of opportunity where the tali will lend itself to being useful
Heavy roll tech just made PVE insanely fun.
You'll see people doing no dodge roll runs, just deflect and backstep
Im loving seeing that this ring is used to get through the frame trap in the last boss’s moveset on no hit runs, thats so awesome
Fighting the Cleanrot knight and Erdtree Avatar in Elphael with the deflect is already way too much fun, I cannot wait to try it with this and the rest of the base game.
Does the all crucible talisman also include this effect?
yes
I imagine if this works with a weapon's feint animation (heavy cancel), it would make for some fluid combat.
Funny hearing heavy load being a solid option. I guess being thiccc has its upsides
at 5:30 is some ultra instinct Goku shit!
This tech is very cool, but as you said it's not a good thing to have in the game. Mostly due to just how bad the netcode is for pvp, which is a big shame. But it is what it is, and thanks for sharing. Still fun to see exactly how this stuff works.
im sorry, this is beyonyd the point but what helmet is that?
I mean, the one used to represent medium load
Divine beast helm?
Ah yes finally overweight kara cancels with s
Heavy Load builds are eating good (literally) as some Well-Pickled Turtle Neck will completely offset the stamina regeneration penalty from being in heavy load. Don't forget to equip the Verdigis Discus for the +10% negation for being in Heavy Load!

I came for the talisman info (very helpful) but my biggest takeaway ended up being your explanation of how latency affects vulnerability windows for roll s. I didn't realize that the effective vulnerability window got smaller as latency increased; I always assumed that if I missed a roll catch due to latency, then I would have landed the hit if I had just delayed it a bit (which is how latency intuitively should work).
If I understand correctly based on what you're saying: latency doesn't actually affect my target for punishing their roll animation? I should always be aiming to hit them at the beginning of their roll vulnerability (roughly when their butt hits the ground) - and the higher the latency is, the more the tail end of this vulnerability window shrinks, forcing me to land my hit earlier in the vulnerability window so it doesn't miss? All this assuming they buffer a second roll.
So with some rough math: assuming this is based on 30fps, if we have 100ms (0.1 seconds) of latency, at 30fps that's 3 frames of latency. Which would mean for two buffered medium rolls, the normal 8 frame vulnerability window of the first roll gets 3 frames shaved off of the end, making it a 5 frame vulnerability window? But no matter the latency, I should always be aiming for the same spot in the beginning of the vulnerability window on my screen?
Thanks for the video, subscribed 👍
Correct, you want to hit them on the earliest frame possible as they exit the roll to have the most consistant roll catch, because as latency increases, the later frames become overlapped if they double roll
@@Rust_BKT >laughs in piercer's lingering hitbox
