You can also do a little counter clockwise spin before strafing on your right to strafe almost any attack from neutral (PSSS L1, PSGS CL1, TS R1) but it's very hard to get it consistently.
These intros just keep getting better. Awesome video dude! This explains so much about some encounters Ive had recently and now Ive got some major practicing to do
Ahem, before I played a single Dark souls game I used to practice the martial art Aikido and Aikdio's technique is the counter attack. I bring that up because a counter attack is first setup by dodging an opponent's attack and punishing them while they were vulnerable doing so. In my dojo we said that the 1st rule of Aikido was, "Don't get hit." and that the 2nd rule of Aikido was, "Don't get hit." Seriously. Only when you're very confident in your safety would you ever counter attack in Aikido. Aikido is a modern martial art that is based off of thousands of years of various eastern martial arts traditions and they main techniques they use is baiting out attacks, only to side step said attacks and follow up the dodge with a counter of your own. Down better you can even use your enemy's momentum to achieve even better positioning or momentum for your counter attack. So fast forward to my first dark souls experience and I realized that Dark souls was the first game I ran into that didn't get in the way of how I was trained to move. So I was, suddenly doing Aikido positioning in a video game. Needless to say I was hooked. Sure I can't do dramtic throws or jointlocks in Dark Souls and Elden Ring but that's not the essence of aikido. The essence of aikido is positioning. The ideal location is close enough where your opponent thinks they can hit you but far enough away so that it's easy for you to reposition safely. Think like one of those loony toons where they mark they distance of a dogs lease but stay just outside of it. In Aikido you almost act as a bullfighter. Your idea position. The place you want to be as often as possible is standing right behind your enemy. No not to setup a backstab, though that's a perfect use of this style. No, you want to be behind your opponent simply because it's harder for them to attack behind you. After that, only after you're safe would you ever consider attacking in Aikido. So yes, 1000s of years of martial wisdom pretty much boils down to, always be circle strafing. =)
this is INCREDIBLE. the level of detail you've put in here is crazy. also you just introduced me to the soft swap animation end lag cancel tech. Thanks!
Strafe is definitely one of the best tools in my kit. I win more matches with strafing more than anything else. I have most trouble against Curved GS and Zwei's. Thanks For this video Rust I appreciate all the work you put into this to help us know more data. Thanks for the back pocket knowledge! Thanks to you my strafe game just got new upgrades. Thank you so much!
Pro gaming is all about repositioning, timing and setting your opponent to fail an attack. There are 2 types. From neutral or during close combat hit and position on the another location to get missed or chipped while you deliver maximum amounts of damage. Doesnt work against all weapons tho. Some have mad recovery. So you should recognize the opportunity to use this tech
i got an ad right after the intro about somethin to do with vampire the masqerade that perfectly added to the slow walk up to his back, as it started with a creepy face staring directly into the camera lol
Advantage: the other person is in hitstun, meaning latency is in your favor Neutral: neither person has made an action to establish how the latency affects the fight Negative: you were stunned or forced to roll, meaning latency is not in your favor
i've stopped pvping in elden ring pc, but these videos still interesting i rly hope they fix all the issues i mention in one of my video... PC version needs total Overhaul
I have a question about handy tech and I'm not sure where exactly to ask. I also don't have the video editing skills to compare two clips side by side. Do ashes of war that have that same animation as one-handing your weapon (imagine Sacred Blade on PSSS, after the L2 you get the same animation as one-handing the sword, even though you were already powerstanced) also give the same running startup speed? And would that have any applicable use, other than backing up to neutral faster?
Handy is always fastest because it gives full sprint immediately, the others dont. Block canceling is better than crouch cancel unless you have to duck
Did you make an update for great katanas and milady. I get punished everytime I try to backtstab them. Mainly because they have some sort of backwards attack.
Hey Rust, one thing Ive been working on to a nominal amount of success is using a ravioli backstab in place of a strafing one when possible as the grab seems faster. Do you have any thoughts on the viability of that strategy or best weapons to use it on? Scythes it works really well ime as well as against parry spam.
Raviolis are fancy and you can land a grab every now and then if your opponent walks into it for you. Primarily it can land if they forward roll out of hitstun, you can get a ravioli to grab, or if you roll into ravioli, you can punish something with really long recovery like jr2 with gugs or if the opponent went into stamina deficit. Its not a good tool for strafing because no s and doesnt outmaneuver tracking of pretty much anything fast enough to strafe. Like maybe if you ravioli from r1 range and theyre going for a running attack, you can get around it, but youre better off just strafing normally. Long story short: its pretty, try it if you like, but youre better off spending time focusing on your spacing or roll discipline
Ive had other requests to cover berd, and theres plenty to talk about with them, but they arent a high priority for me tbh, its not a weapon i really use very often
@@Rust_BKT I play horribly with halberds cause I hardly use them, but whenever I see somebody use them they basically just do running attacks at max range lol
1.10 was a nerf to psgs, with everything able to poise break in 1, any small weapon can easily break its stance and force it off. Psgs has to play very carefully to avoid getting shut down by small fast weapons like shamshir and thrusting sword, and anything with hyperarmor can quickly ruin its day by simply saying, “no thank you, its my turn now”
So, are you sprinting into it? I have been jogging at my opponents, because my internet isn't top-notch and I don't want to get punished for closing distance...
Well phantom range doesnt affect you moving toward them, so that shouldnt be a concern in the first place, but yes sprinting is necessary for most strafes
@@patrickramey5870 you have to unlock to get the angle check early enough to get a backstab grab, but strafing by itself, no, you dont have to be unlocked. Tldr: it takes extra frames for your character to auto rotate to face the opponent in time for the backstab attempt
@@unholypilgrim i mean its easier to make sure you hug tight to their body while you strafe too, but it can backfire too, and you can get stuck on their body
Wow This is cool but I'm pc player, tracking + lat is too strong a lot of the time, I've seen lots of people get fucked by phantom range, not just extending outward but to the sides as well (I.E. HTS hits way too often for how strafe-able it should be)
Sorry, that was obtuse of me, i just get frustrated hearing the same thing. I go over this in the video, but ill break down some points that i really hope you incorporate into your play, which will make your strafed more successful. Knowing the speed of your connection is very important, you can download an app called steamp2pinfo that runs in the background and lets you know your exact latency to the other player. Adjust your timing to begin your strafes on prediction, you can only strafe some weapons on reaction, and even then, you have to have good connection. Adjust your positioning to be tighter around the opponent so that you can circumvent the speed of their tracking. Phantom range is effectively just the expression that your spacing was bad, and you need to adjust your positioning. You cant strafe out of hitstun, and if you roll, you need a recovery cancel to make things strafable, i.e strafing CGS after you roll. Again, only possible with a recovery cancel and avoiding the phantom hit. In my testing, you cant strafe the follow up pokes of hts while in negative priority, so dont try it. You can only strafe them from advantage or neutral priority
@Rust_BKT I understand mr. Rust. No need to apologize and thank you for the advice. In all honesty im trash at all souls pvp so if i come off like i think the game is unfair or skill-less due to platform or whatever, that's just my bias talking. I do always appreciate the info in these videos.
