(YOU SHOULD TRY THIS) crucible feather talisman adds s to your roll, this allows you to dodge slightly sooner than usual. This means you can intercept big slow weapons from getting into hyper armor. If an enemy is attacking as soon as you get into range, anticipate your roll to be slightly ahead of time, recover into roll attack faster than they can follow up, stagger.

@Rust_BKT I don't watching much but I do love the insane humor him and Lost seem to have ABYSS is also another super funny Elden Ring youtuber though he isn't as popular and it's a bit more meme-y
I remember absolutely rocking the arena on release with a BKhalberd and offhand shamshir, using bloodhound step to quickly move in and out of range for the shamshir, since it feels better than the halberd's followups (unless i could hit with a 'backstep' attack)
Watching these videos makes me feel so inept, I would never call myself great at PvP. Watching you play Rust, makes me look like a child flailing during a tantrum. Nice video
I used to think most light weapons could get 2 safe hits like the Shamshir but after double checking that's not the case. So I was trying to think about a way to balance this. Making the light weapons faster isn't a very satisfying solution, and slowing down the hyper armor weapons would end up making them much worse to use. But just now I realised something so obvious I'd never thought of before: Currently the cancel window to attack out of hitstun is actually faster than rolling for some reason, so I think making that window a few frames slower to be in line with (or even a frame slower than) rolling out of stun, would allow more weapons to have that 50/50 choice of confirming damage or delaying for a roll catch. I'm not sure how this would affect overall viabilities of weapons but just a thought that might improve the matchup without nerfing great-weapons directly
yep, this is exactly what we have been saying for years. Youll find it in Jeenine's and Onlywaifu's address to fromsoft as some of their main talking points.
With the coming dlc I want share my thoughts. After logging a lot of time on 1.10 I can say with no reservation that I do not like how the game plays by comparison to 1.09. I think the change to poise was a fundamental alteration that was completely unwarranted. I never saw any discussion on passive poise being game breaking or overpowered. Poise was not a broken mechanic because there was an enormous list of low requirement weapons that broke all poise or almost all and common ashes of war that broke it as well with most light weapon classes. Most light weapon classes were fast enough in their recovery time that they could not be caught on reaction by other weapons this is almost universally true when they had quickstep or bloodhound step as their ash. Light weapons were absolutely useable in 1.09. They could have used a bit of normalization on their poise damage. Many were around 57 poise damage if they would have bumped that to 67 1h for all but daggers it would have made them break any poise on second hit which would have been much better than now. It takes 30 seconds for poise to regenerate which is an eternity. The change to poise made the game way more passive unless someone is using an obviously broken setup. People tend to just run away and stay just out of range spinning and wiggling until you dare to attack out of sheer boredom or mistake one of their million per second spins and wiggles for an attack and attempt a trade. There is not enough of a gradient of damage between the light weapons and great weapons or colossal weapons to justify light weapons haveing a speed advantage and stun to boot. If from thought 1h light weapons were underused there were better ways of buffing them that didn’t require turning elden ring into ds3.5. They also must have thought that 1h great weapons were too strong since the poise alterations were a nerf to 1h great weapons. I rarely see anyone one handing power stancing great weapons other than the accursed great spears. 1.10 also killed armor diversity. If you have less than 88 poise a 2h light weapon will spam you to death. Or if other guy has offstock you better have brought 109 poise. Light weapons should do 67 so they always stun in two hits but you can wear down to the 51 poise armors with bull goat talisman to tank the first hit. The changes also massively buffed ashes of war. Since many light weapons have fast backswings and get the faster versions of ashes of war they get a massive effectiveness boost from having priority. Heavy weapons have reactable attacks and slower ashes of war so having priority does not benefit them nearly as much as it does light weapons where you have to try to differentiate between a fast backswing or a fast roll catch ash of war. This was obviously not accounted for in balance. The ash of war damage is now insane with multi hit ashes now fully comboing. Damage in this game was too high and 1.10 poise changes turned that up to 11 with L2 to win 1000 damage ashes of war all over the place now. Paired weapons are overtuned in 1.10. Adding stun to psss and pss is insane. Already some of the best in the game and they get a buff. The elemental barrier nerfs were ridiculously excessive to the point that I have not seen a single person use one since their nerf. They are non existent in pvp. Mages now can just pop terra magica and stand toe to toe in melee inside the circle or launch buffed spells if you don’t enter the circle to go get them. They are a no weakness build any more. Best at range and just as good up close. Spells like catch flame do 189 poise damage every cast and can be spammed. The blockstun on light weapons feels ridiculous. If you spam into my shield with a light weapon I should be able to parry your spam but block stun can make that impossible with lag and what seems to be input drops. I have been anchored in place unable to do anything trying to attack or roll away from someone just spamming paired daggers or fist weapons right into my shield. It feels so clunky and frustrating. I see gameplay from good players in 1.10 and its all just stay out of range wiggle and spin until they do something I can punish. It is boring to watch and boring to play against. 1.10 made the game more passive, made spam more effective for melee and magic, and increased ash of war damage. 1.10 in my opinion was a terrible patch.
I liked 1.09 as well tbh. I don’t know if I dislike 1.10 as much as you do, and if I had to choose I might still pick 1.10, but it did have lots of weird side effects that feel unplanned for.
Here’s hoping we’ll get a few more big patches after the DLC. I personally still find PvP and invasions borderline unplayable and would rather stick to Ds3, but Ds3 ain’t getting any younger :/
@@TheTurtMy problem with ds3 is that it's old. Sorry, what I mean is it's not getting updated so glitches and broken things will be like that permanently.
@@Mizuraka4437 Estus Cancel is really the only glitch you’ll commonly see in Ds3. It’s annoying, but all it really does is increase the kill time. The worst ones like Bowgun and Splitleaf Infinite do suck, but they are no rarer than Elden Rings Chainsaw.
@@TheTurt That still proves my point. That fact that those glitches won't get fixed kinda hurts. Things like murky and certain weapons arts like midirs katana won't get the nerf on their ash of war they deserve
Shamshir has a high skill floor, but an immense skill ceiling. Once you get your spacing down with it, it can pretty much murder any matchup. Make sure youre using block cancels when you anticipate a mash to manage your spacing, that might help a bit
I appreciate your videos. Hopefully you see some growth when the dlc comes out. It's odd and a shame that the best sources of knowledge in these games tend to be overshadowed.
i was told psss has no offensive plays but thats a load bc the jump attack is very agressing and the ability to roll catch on a simple well spaced R1 helps keep priority
15:03 the first time I saw an elden ring tournament the player that got second place made a video about that tech from what the comentators said that guy wasnt using the meta back then but he is a beast for managing to get so far he ended up losing against powerstanced lances, the point is that tech is STRONG and something more people should consider doing.
Youre probably refering to frosty, he is the guy that popularized the tech. He has a good video on it too. Hes well known for pretty much only using offmeta and he still wins tournaments very frequently or atleast gets top 3.
For the most part yes. But it depends on your poise, the weapon ur using, and the type of jumping heavy. Some things wont poise break, but if youre going for a charged r2, then you can tank almost anything
2:41 implies that hyperarmor frames are equivalent to damage frames which is not true, you can just weave an attack inbetween damage frames to win as it was always done since ds3
And the only way to do so is to outspace an attack. If you commit a roll to avoid the first attack, then you cant land a punish within that window between the attacks and be able to get out safely. You will both land the attack too late to stop their follow up, and be forced to trade, UNLESS you have something with an early recovery cancel like quickstep. You HAVE to outspace their hit. You can not roll and attempt to punish safely
Hey, I love your videos. Btw, you kicked my ass with that poison Shamshir the other day lmao ( I had less than 88 poise, and got bullied, fight lasted like 10s or less ). Probably getting footage for the Shamshir portion, because it was that same fashion.
Really appreciate the video very informative! However I think we are both experiencing completely different metas. I don’t know if it varies across platforms but Personally I see a lot of spell slinging incantations and sorceries alike. As well as the frequent invisibility glitches. However I will say I see a fair balance between the spellcasting and combat style “meta” That’s where I have the most difficulty from lightning bolt spam to a Moonville heavy attack it gets pretty aggravating. I can respect it it’s a part of the game but I just wish the developers would implement an arena where we could avoid any type of spellcasting / op ash of war and just get to the sheer nitty and gritty melee combat. Hot take and very unlikely i know. But it would be nice! Nevertheless thank you for your efforts in your Content I have definitely taken a lot away from this video and will be practicing with some new weapons!
I run into alot of spell casters and moonveil too but i wouldnt call them meta at all. In other words its not adapted, its generally just throwing out random shit and hoping some of it sticks. But as with any projectile based game, wait for them to run out of bullets or hit them while theyre reloading, and keep up pressure. I generally never include clips of these types of fights because theyre very drawn out to come to an ultimate conclusion of just roll catching them 4 times in a row. Moonveil is one of the easier things to deal with, atleast in duels. Roll the unsheathe and you have prio. If they panic roll after they miss the unsheathe (they will), then just adjust your timing to roll catch instead of taking your priority. If anything the hardest part about dealing with casters aside from getting to the point where you have an opening, its the “who does that” tech, where they randomly use something that absolutely makes no sense to do, and get rewarded for it. When in doubt, play the safe option, and wait for them to mess up
@@Rust_BKT holy guacamole! So on point man! The “who does what tech” is the best way to describe it too! I greatly appreciate the insight to the catch roll to the moonveil aswell. Some serious pointers here i am definitely going to implement into my builds and improve my read ability! Seriously appreciate you taking the time to go into detail with all that man! 🙇 need to find more players like you! Thank you for not gate keeping! 🤘🖤

A lot of this information I already know without really knowing how to articulate it, kinda strange. Love your "foundational" way of breaking things down. Edit: you are....Very good 1v1. how the hell are you jumping and turning around in the air?
@@bulwark7840 i dont have any intention to remake this, no, cuz the concepts from this stil apply, just poise breakpoints are different, and you csnt infinitely trade hyperarmor anymore
I can't believe bust_rucket would teach people how to counter my setup (W+m1) unsubbing. Great video as always, I like zweihander for HA, it can space decently on good lat and has counter damage and hyper armor on R2 which I find really good at punishing mashers from neutral (Even if it is countering hyper armor with hyper armor)
Dang, is it really only PSSS and Shamshir/Scimitar with godtier backswings? I was hoping to be a contrarian next time I picked up ER and use Warped Axe for its backswing.
Warped axe hits like a shit ton of bricks but the recovery is too slow on backswing to use it without risking a punish. That said. Hit the hard enough and it doesnt really matter
So what I'm getting is that if I play with something with extremely short range like Fists, if I'm facing a good player with hyperarmor and don't manage to vortex them myself, I'm fkd since I won't be able to close the gap fast enough to punish them before they can get into hyperarmor again? Am I forced to go into Barbaric Roar trades, or do I have some other counterplay options?
question from someone that doesn't play in the arena anymore: are there any meta spellcaster setups? other than carian slicer, catch flame or star shower spam?
Spells have different purposes. Slicer and catch flame are your punish tools, where star shower and rock sling are your neutral pressure tools. From there, you have other tools that punish roll ins, like o’flame or piercer, and combos that u can use from there like wrath of gold. If you think about them as tools with different purposes instead of “main spell vs secondary spell”, then you can build a spell wheel pretty effectively
4:47 2h ts can maintain prio as well no? might be only with rr2 > r1 > roll against some setups but i think you can r1 > r1 > roll against many ha setups
rr2-r1 is safe because its a lvl 2 stun on rr2, but r1-r1 shouldnt be able to roll out unless its slow HA like a lance, but GS, CGS, or hammer, should be able to trade, unless they have a recovery cancel AOW. the Fast Ash cancel is 7 frames faster than dodge roll (very balanced, true and real)
how would lat affect this? if im getting hit 4 frames after you hit me on your screen, does my hitstun not start 4 frames after you hit me on your screen, giving you for extra frames to r1 again then roll?@@Rust_BKT

@Rust_BKT I don't watching much but I do love the insane humor him and Lost seem to have
ABYSS is also another super funny Elden Ring youtuber though he isn't as popular and it's a bit more meme-y
Thanks for breaking down how priority works! GG we dueled about a week ago, it was a good fight!
Ggs ^^
I remember absolutely rocking the arena on release with a BKhalberd and offhand shamshir, using bloodhound step to quickly move in and out of range for the shamshir, since it feels better than the halberd's followups (unless i could hit with a 'backstep' attack)
u inspired me to do a playstyle where I pretend to be open so I can do a counter attack right before or during their regular attack
Ty!!!
Top tier editing and content as always 🙌
Awesome video man!
QQ: Do the straight swords powerstance hyperarmor work against bosses?
powerstanced straightswords dont have hyperarmor
@@Rust_BKT thanks bro!
But just now I realised something so obvious I'd never thought of before:
Currently the cancel window to attack out of hitstun is actually faster than rolling for some reason, so I think making that window a few frames slower to be in line with (or even a frame slower than) rolling out of stun, would allow more weapons to have that 50/50 choice of confirming damage or delaying for a roll catch.
@@Rust_BKT oh I've not seen that I'll have to check it out.

Thank you for inventing meta Mr. John Bucket Rust!

Love your vids dude very informative
Lmao I was wondering what you'd use that clip on
Nice video, found it quite hard to deal with ha weapons with shamshir
Shamshir has a high skill floor, but an immense skill ceiling. Once you get your spacing down with it, it can pretty much murder any matchup. Make sure youre using block cancels when you anticipate a mash to manage your spacing, that might help a bit
@@Rust_BKT thanks, I would practice more with shamshir, it very fun and rewarding
I appreciate your videos. Hopefully you see some growth when the dlc comes out. It's odd and a shame that the best sources of knowledge in these games tend to be overshadowed.
Id like to say size doesnt matter but we all know thats cap. I just hope people find this stuff useful
i was told psss has no offensive plays but thats a load bc the jump attack is very agressing and the ability to roll catch on a simple well spaced R1 helps keep priority

I say happy easter
Great fucking vid! Feel like I learned so much in this one video than I have watching tons of pvp vids.
The more i see things like these more i think that i'm striving to do the impossible playing with MnK.
If you do a jumping heavy it can cancel the hyper armour. The only reason I know this is because I use hyper armour
For the most part yes. But it depends on your poise, the weapon ur using, and the type of jumping heavy. Some things wont poise break, but if youre going for a charged r2, then you can tank almost anything
@@Rust_BKT interesting, thanks!
Bro help out- when I wanna whiff punish during spacing- I always get the rr1 !! How can I deal with this
The unfortunate answer is : you gotta make the read
Hey, I love your videos. Btw, you kicked my ass with that poison Shamshir the other day lmao ( I had less than 88 poise, and got bullied, fight lasted like 10s or less ). Probably getting footage for the Shamshir portion, because it was that same fashion.
Tyty, and yea i was probably recording for this. But ggs!
spacing and whiff punish is the only way, and don't focus on roll catch. just punish the part where they attack out of hitstun and make em roll away.
love this dude
The worst thing about ps straight swords is that it's not ps spears

Don't know who you are but I'm pretty great at pvp I think and this is top tier content, also funny. A lot of this information I already know without really knowing how to articulate it, kinda strange. Love your "foundational" way of breaking things down.
Edit: you are....Very good 1v1. how the hell are you jumping and turning around in the air?
Don't even know why I watching this when I've been playing since ds1 lol
are you going to make an update video on how the dlc patch update affects this? i heard dual straightsword was nerfed or something
@@bulwark7840 i dont have any intention to remake this, no, cuz the concepts from this stil apply, just poise breakpoints are different, and you csnt infinitely trade hyperarmor anymore
very well done. Thanks!
Rust is always on fire! 🤟
Rusted Anchor with Storm Stomp is OP asf lol
@@ProudToBeAHillbilly storm stomp is overtuned, yes. But hear me out. Just dont walk into it?
Dang, is it really only PSSS and Shamshir/Scimitar with godtier backswings? I was hoping to be a contrarian next time I picked up ER and use Warped Axe for its backswing.
Warped axe hits like a shit ton of bricks but the recovery is too slow on backswing to use it without risking a punish. That said. Hit the hard enough and it doesnt really matter
@@Rust_BKT Very encouraging! Thanks!
What's the better system in your opinion: the current 1.10 with hyperarmor, or 1.09 with passive poise?
Both have their problems, 1.09 had less of them
@@Rust_BKT I agree. Dont wanna rant about all the problems right now, but problems aside, I miss one hadned greatweapons being useful
By having MORE hyperarmor of course.
What weapons would ya’ll recommend to someone just getting into pvp (1v1) to learn fundamentals?
I have a question, are you going to do a guide on how to set up a build or like how set up for PvP in general.
after dlc releases yea
@@Rust_BKT gotcha
I assume warped axe would also work due to the quick followup r1.

PSSS doesn't have a good engage. It only has jump attack which is predictable. Shamshir has a good running attack and can jump attack for mix ups.

question from someone that doesn't play in the arena anymore: are there any meta spellcaster setups? other than carian slicer, catch flame or star shower spam?
