I watched the follow up video about mixing your own chalk paint. can that recipe be used on fabric as well? Im concerned about using plaster of paris on fabric. your sofa redo is awesome!
I love this color and I’m ready to take the plunge I cannot find this pink color anywhere in any chalk paints. Now I’m sad. What’s the name of your valspar pink?
This turned out so beautifully. I had to chuckle though at a memory of my dad spray painting our couch (back in the 50's). They had just come out with upholstery spray paint and you could buy it in green or orange. Dad chose green. We were pretty poor; the only reason he bought it was because he wanted to invite his new boss and wife to our home for dinner. Oh, he was so proud to be spiffing up that raggedy old couch! His company arrived, we had a nice meal then retired to the living room. After an hour or so of chatting, our company stood up to leave. As they turned towards their coats hanging on the coat rack, we (my parents and siblings and I) saw with horror that the green paint had seeped into their clothing. My father looked horrified, and my mother shot daggers at me and my brothers to keep us from saying anything. My dad was so mortified he never went back to that job!
He was sort of a male version of Lucille Ball. One time we were moving (we were always moving, it seemed), a tattered old trailer hitched to the back of our car. As we kids and Dad chattered excitedly about our new home (beginnings always seemed so fun), the road dipped downhill. Someone noticed a trailer speeding right along beside us, then it sailed past us downhill. I'll never forget someone yelling, "Hey! That's our stuff in that trailer!" Miraculously, the trailer came to a complete stop at the bottom of the road without anything being harmed. Oh, what a good laugh we had.
I would recommend to everyone to steam clean any used furniture beforehand. Good for you working so hard on a project, it looks beautiful! Preserving the past in a useable item is also good for the environment. Keep up the good work!
Super creative job. Nice finished piece of furniture. Informative video, as well. FYI: You can get Lowes to match any color from the Valspar line in your chalk paint. I have done it several times.
+Erin Graham Chalky paint is different from chalk paint-do you use the chalk paint or chalky paint? Let me know please :D because the lady at Lowe's told me I could only chose select colors in chalky paint. However...I found a recipe for DIY chalky paint( in any color) much cheaper than buying it at the store!!
Lacy Jane, this is the most awesome channel I've found! I love your instructions as they are so easy to follow. This turned out to be an amazing project, I was a little leary of the paint being stiff to sit on being new to this whole idea. I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial. Heading off to watch more of your videos. Hugs
I just don't understand the whole hurtful comments thing anyway, I mean, if you aren't impressed with someone's video, simply turn it off and move on. Clearly these aren't people that make videos cause then they'd realize how much time and effort goes into one. I get really ill with people like that. 14K subscribers? That's far more people that DO love your channel, remember that when miserable people want to bring you down. I think you're amazing! Keep creating for subbies like me.
I'm so excited to try this method on a pair of antique chairs my mom is giving me! Excellent video! Thank you for saving me time, money and frustration,so I don't have to reupholster.
I’m just about ready to paint two chairs in my living room.....we have a beach house which we’re now renting and the furniture from there doesn’t go well with my new house. The chairs are practically brand new , super comfy and have been sat on maybe 5 times. I could not part with them so imagine my excitement when I learned I could “paint” them! Watching your video helped me a lot. I watched all the Ann sloan videos but wanted to see some furniture that was painted with something other then hers! So I’m off to the store now....Home Depot sells chalk paint by BEHR btw with a lot more color options! You TOTALLY rocked that couch! Love the rhinestones!!!! Wish me luck! 👍🏻
I am about to purchase a pale pink couch and I absolutely LOVE how your couch turned out! The shape and style of this couch was screaming to be PINK! Awesome job and thanks for all the tips and info! I subscribed!
Oh my lord, this is the coolest thing ever! I had no idea you could paint a couch and not have it turn out all stiff and terrible. Chalk paint is even more awesome than I thought! Thanks so much for the water tip! It turned out beautiful.
Great video here. I really liked that you provided a list of supplies. Pink may not have been the color I went with, but hey, it turned out great and looks great! :)
You have talked me into it... I am completely refurbishing "2" RVs... a 1985 Class A RV.. and a 1972 (cute as bug) Tiny Travel Trailer... I have a lot of Cushions to paint...and the main color in the tiny trailer is white and turquoise and I think the ugly brown cushions have to be painted dark to cover up the ugly brown that is the same fabric since 1972 (UGH!!) I'm thinking a deep purple/blue color... What do you think? Thank you for sharing this great video... Love It... I am hand paint the outside with metallic colors and glitter!!!! I do a base coat, like deep yellow, since I'm going to be using Gold Glitter and then I paint the Gold Metallic (second coat) then the 3rd coat I use a Clear Polyurethane with iridescent pearl white... It is Beautiful.... settle, but a glitter to top it all off...
Omg Laci! I have the Same Couch! Got the whole set at a yard sale .so cheap! & I randomly came across your video. To my surprise it's the same exact French Louie style! Craazzyyy 🤗 Love love love your video. Thanks!!!! Great results!👍🏼
I have a huge project to do... I'm so glad to find your video... LOVE this Couch... I am redoing a 1985 RV... Everything is 34 years old and bright Orange & Brown... Couch... Cushions Drapes... My question is this... IS IT SOFT TO THE TOUCH??? I don't want it to look and FEEL like it's been painted. Thank you again for sharing this great video..
I so love the new couch look. I have been thinking of making covers for my floral couch and chairs. However, now I am convinced that I can just paint them for a much better look for a lower cost, maybe more work tho. Also will take of the skirting first. Thank you for sharing
Have you ever tried any of the homemade paints for this?? Wow, LOVE that color and I cannot imagine that any sofa at IKEA is this great! Great find (and job!)!
Love this!!! I just bought the love seat of this exact couch!!!! I came online to search for tutorials and how to paint fabric. 💗The print is the same but previous owners painted the wood black I believe.
I absolutely LOVE this piece!! Gorgeous!! I would have never thought to paint a piece of furniture! This is stunning and makes me want a pink couch now, lol
How did you clean your couch before you painted? Did you just vacuum? Or did you clean it with something? I have a chair with a stain and want to try this. Thanks for the great tutorial!!
Hello😊 your sofa turned out absolutely gorgeous! I wonder if you can help me, I also painted a sofa, with the same technique, it looks really nice but if you sit on it it's super dusty and you have paint on your body. I don't want to sand the last coat because the sanding removes the brightness of the color, and I don't want to wax it because I like the way the fabric feels right now. Do you have any ideas or tricks on how I can make that sofa usable after painting it?
Amazing!!!😍 new subbie here cos this, omg like who wouldn't want a pink couch, and that sticky tile video, I have to do something to my rented apartment blahhhh kitchen, and this is perf!! love all ur ideas. settling in now for a binge watch!! 😁
TFS! While I absolutely love this sofa in its original state, the finished product is also very beautiful. I would love to have this sofa in my collection. You scored it for a song!
I literally have this same couch! Actually the whole couch set lol. Ive been going back and forth trying to figure out if I should reupholster, buy a new couch, scouring OfferUp lol. I think I just found my solution, paint it is!
How does the sofa feel with the wax? Im painting mine oxford navy. 5 coats now and i think i have to wax. Looks so dry. Will the wax make it more even and shiny?❤
Do you think your chalk paint did a better job than say using RIT due to dye the fabric? I know I have seen others paint with paint and it feels stiff afterwards. You would think that RIT fabric dye would not end up feeling stiff but I have not tried it either. So I can not be sure. It sure did turn out nice though. How has it held up after all these years later?
Laci Jane DMy couch has a floral print like your couch has a print. Do you think I could paint it grey and It would still look fine??? I hope you answer me back oh please answer me back :) :)
Hiya I'm new to the diy world somewhat and I'm painting a couch and it's gun metal gray basically charcoal colored and I dig it but it's so rigid the pillows. I did get some sandpaper. Should I be using the sandpaper in between coats? Thanks again and I hope to have a finished product that looks awesome like yours. Cheers from the DMV.
Hi Peter! If it feels rigid or rough in any spots that just means you did not use enough water. It's insane how much water is required to prevent that from happening. And Oh man is it time consuming. Try the sandpaper in between coats and remember to use LOTS of water. (Because you're DYING it, NOT painting it.) I hope that makes sense.
It turned out really pink I love the couch but I still haven't put the furniture sealant in there yet. I've been super busy with my work so I figure I'll finish it in the winter time. Thanks for asking. Cheers
thanks!! I shampooed my couch before I did this and then sprayed it in sections as I went along. you want it completely saturated so you're not painting the couch, you're rather dying it. I believe homemade chalk paint would work, but I've never personally used it. xoxo

Gluing the rhinestones on the buttons... brilliant! Such an beautiful makeover.
I would recommend to everyone to steam clean any used furniture beforehand. Good for you working so hard on a project, it looks beautiful! Preserving the past in a useable item is also good for the environment. Keep up the good work!
Stunning! An IKEA sofa couldn’t come close to looking as glam as this.
I cant believe how good that turned out!... I'm not a pink person but that would be so good in mint!!!
For sure!!

Pink may not have been the color I went with, but hey, it turned out great and looks great! :)
