so happy I found your video. I was in the process of finding someone to reupholster my living room set. This saves so much money and I can do it myself.
If you're aiming for a completely different color family (bright light green to deep purple) do you need to bleach it or do some kind of base coat first?
thanks so much for sharing this!!! it's GORGEOUS and looks like a statement piece, plus older couches are made so well and much more comfortable! love that someone can have a beautiful space on a budget :) you have a warm personality xx
We used to use "acrylic textile medium" mixed with the acrylic paints for painting designs on clothing. Made the paints more flexible and wear better and washable. I don't know if that would be too expensive to use on something large, but you might want to check it out and maybe try it. I like how your sofa looks. Very pretty.
Just like anything else, it takes a lot of practice. I've loved drawing since I was a child. Like you said you can use stencils, and fabric stamps when doing fabric painting on clothing too.
Can’t wait to try it. I Just found you today, I pick up my two wing backed chairs tomorrow!! !💙💙. You are well spoken and to the point! Great video~ great channel!!
How about cleaning the sofa, can you clean it like normal after? I want to do this sofa I got for $75 bucks but want to be sure I can clean it as normal since I do have a toddler
great question! I haven't shampooed it since, haven't needed to. I put a protective water resistant wax on top of it, but I may be too scared to risk it.
Hi Lacy, thanks so much for the video - super helpful! How does the couch feel when you sit on it? Still soft or can you tell it’s painted? Do you use this coach often? Im considering painting my living room coach pink instead of buying a throw. Thanks again!
I loved this video , I know you mentioned you paid 250 before you painted it and put the jewels 💎. If you had to sell it after giving it that beautiful make over , how much money would you sell it for if you wanted to make a profit ? Just curious
Stunning and the sofa isn't bad either :-) flirting aside I was wondering if you can help me I have a modern version of a 1960s egg chair its red velvet but it just doesn't match my interior which I have spent a lot of time matching up. The red is a slap in the face to the rooms decor. I have looked at a lot of these how to dye furniture videos and in all honesty they have mostly made a bad colour into a worse colour but you have done a superb job and I love that you sourced out why I call proper furniture to do it on. Basically if someone uses awful furniture the colour isn't going to matter greatly but you have dug out a gem. Getting back to the point can I dye red to black successfully I fear it might come out like a washed out light black. What paint did you use and did you use a protector to seal it.? Thanks for looking as wonderful as your sofa lol. Thanks "cheeky British steve".
Did it bleed at all right after you dyed it? How long after it was dye did you wait to use it? One person who did a UA-cam video says it takes months!!!
Hey there. Didn't catch your name on your video but I love your painted sofa. So I wanted to share with you a project I did myself. I.... like you.... bought two slipper chairs at a thrift shop here in Boston, MA and they were a gold color and believe me not much to look at and I found a round table just straight up wood probably oak or maple so I thought to myself I'm going to paint this too so that I can incorporate the two chairs with the table. In short I painted them hot pink and black. I'm praying to God that I can figure out how to send you a picture of them because they came out fantastically. Everyone including myself was taken aback, shocked, Godsmacked! However you want to phrase it. So the gold chairs I painted hot pink with black polka dots and the table black oil paint but the table has a lip that I printed hot pink with smaller black polka dots. Ooh. Ok. So now I'm gonna try to send a pic.
Angie Hernandez most people say you can’t. I’ve done it before. I had to sand a lot between coats. But if your couch is a big fluffy coach. I’d get Great Bay home slipcovers. They’re nicer than other brands.
how does the couch feel with the wax coating? is it soft like fabric or slick like wax paper? can yougivean example of someting that it feels similar to? I prefer a real fabric feeling to anything stiff/leathery. thanks for the great follow up video!!! you answered all my other questions except for the cleaning process. if disaster strikes and you have to spot clean, please let us know how it goes! hope it stays safe, though!
Hmmm...if you dye it (and not paint it) it won't feel stiff, it will just feel like how the fabric felt before you painted it. Main thing is to use a lot of water so it doesn't come out stiff. I hope this answered your question
+Laci Jane okay cool! so using lots of water this way really just dyes it? :) guess I better find something to try this out on for myself now! haha! Thank you for the video and for responding!! You rock! :D
Help! I have a vintage gold velvet sofa that I would love to dye to a soft pink. Does the paint cover dark colors, or does it need to be lightened first, or is it just a bad idea -- or, of course, a good idea?
Okay, not after seeing this I REALLY want to paint my couch!! The dye doesn't even look like it faded! Is this your everyday couch that gets a lot of use? Because it's doesn't look worn on the cushions at all. Love it!
I have suede couch cushions that are burnt orange should I prim them 1st then paint them black I was also going to spray paint the leather black. Could u please recommend any spray paint products for leather furniture.
So I’m painting my outdoor fabric seating but my only question is if I wash them could it go wrong, bc the couches just get dusty ect… so does the paint go away??
I have a 70+ year old couch, it has a slight design on it. Can paint it?. A professional told me to never get rid if it because they don't make sturdy couches like it. anymore. The cushions you sit on zip off, should I leave them on when painting it?
Hi ya your couch is gorgeous! Does the chalky paint work if the couch colour is dark? like if the couch is chocolate brown could you paint it white? Do you know?
You probably could but it would take A LOT of patience and A LOT of paint. Why not go with a darker color...like if it's brown go with a dark forest green or something?
This is beautiful! So I have a question. Really need your thoughts. We have been working on my daughters upholstered head board. I am using a flat wax/chalk brush, doing it in sections spraying down with water before paint and have allowed to fully dry in sun before next coat. I have done 3 full coats and spot painted a 4th coat. It is still not 100%even and just beginning to feel a little bit rough. Should I do a light sand and then go in with the paint brush dipped in water before dipping in the paint. I am beginning to get a bit frustrated. This has been a long ordeal...all weekend!Lol! We went from a tan to a grey btw. I paint furniture all the time but this is the first fabric project. Please help...the struggle is REAL! LOL!
Hello😊 your sofa turned out absolutely gorgeous! I wonder if you can help me, I also painted a sofa, with the same technique, it looks really nice but if you sit on it it's super dusty and you have paint on your body. I don't want to sand the last coat because the sanding removes the brightness of the color, and I don't want to wax it because I like the way the fabric feels right now. Do you have any ideas or tricks on how I can make that sofa usable after painting it?
How much or how many coats of wax did you use? There are videos on pairing upholstery but very few updates three + years afterward. I don’t want to waste time on a couch if the wax doesn’t protect the chalk paint, cracks or flakes into the future.
You are so pretty :-) thank you for the update because you just answered all my questions! We are full time RVers and i am NOT digging the old brown paisley print. Now i can update!!! Whoop whoop! When i do, i will credit you. Momma Gayle @Chasing The Joneses
I spray painted my dining room chair cushions and my color is uneven. can I correct this by using the chalk oaint to dye them. I used brown spray paint
Quick question and I hope you can answer this.. is the can paint better than the spray paint? Because i found chalk paint in a spray pain so I'm wondering if it's the same or not
What the recipe for the DIY chalk paint? My husband and I have recently decided instead of buy new furniture we want to paint what we have. I would really appreciate it!!!
Striking project! The jewels are the perfect embellishment. Paints are pigments that are glued to whatever they are applied to. That's what paint is--coloured glue. Glues can be very thick, such as sculpting epoxies or very thin, such as Superglue. That is a tricky question, Laurie. I would say it would be better to paint it white first because that will lighten it up enough to get to the color you want. It will take a lot of work and patience. But essentially, you would have to prime it if you want it to come out to the color you want, if the color you want is lighter than what the couch currently is.
Laci Jane DIY hi I was wondering if this a water based paint does it become activated again if it gets wet and then get you all messy, cause I started painting 2 cushions and I wiped one with a cloth the cloth dried but when I wet it a little bit the paint was on my hands
Dearly noted! I've got a lot of videos that are in line. I am actually going to sell this couch soon because I don't have room for it. So I will have to film an update before selling it :)
hello I came across your video I want to also paint a couch just have a question.. if something were to get onto the couch is that spot able to get wet and washed without removing the color?
Just watched your DIY on how you painted the couch - amazing! I never knew you could do this and am dying to try. Would love to hear your opinions on my house as a fellow DIY'er, if you have any time to pop by and check out the first episode I would really appreciate any and all feedback :) Excited to see more of your videos!!
OMG, I watched your videos like 13 years ago!!! I can't believe you popped up in a couch painting search. HAHA!
so happy I found your video. I was in the process of finding someone to reupholster my living room set. This saves so much money and I can do it myself.
Awesome!! I'm glad to have inspired you. Good luck!
Saw your video first. Then watched a gazillion more videos about how to do this. Your method has the best results. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Shay! I’m glad you found my videos helpful and again I say USE A LOT OF WATER!!
My couch has held up SO well! Following your video and it LOVE my grey couch now!
Jacqueline Valdez would love to see it, can you post you before and after pic under this comment?
Jacqueline Valdez I
You have great communication skills and a pleasure to watch. Thank you.
If you're aiming for a completely different color family (bright light green to deep purple) do you need to bleach it or do some kind of base coat first?

Painting designs on clothes...now that's a great idea. Did you use stencils or freehand? Thank you for your comment!
I did freehand. Floral designs, and some dog portraits. And some holiday designs.
That's amazing, I wish I knew how to paint designs but I'm just not very good at drawing/painting like that :)
Just like anything else, it takes a lot of practice. I've loved drawing since I was a child. Like you said you can use stencils, and fabric stamps when doing fabric painting on clothing too.
Your brave to paint a couch pink, I will give you props!
I never knew this existed and now i am so excited
Thank you so much for the update ☺️
I love your sofa. So pretty and my favorite color too
That couch is amazingly beautiful ❤️
Can’t wait to try it. I Just found you today, I pick up my two wing backed chairs tomorrow!! !💙💙.
You are well spoken and to the point! Great video~ great channel!!
Wow. The couch is beautiful, good job and thank you for the video.
So glad you did an update--it still looks wonderful.
It looks so amazing, like new! I just have a feeling mine will not be so perfect. But I appreciate the tips!
Love this & your eyes are absolutely beautiful
The couch looks amazing!! You did a great job!! Love it!!
thanks so much girly!!!
How about cleaning the sofa, can you clean it like normal after? I want to do this sofa I got for $75 bucks but want to be sure I can clean it as normal since I do have a toddler
It's beautiful! It looks soft and velvety. The jewels really added extra pizzaz.
Have you shampooed it to clean it AFTER painting it? If you have, it didn't change the color any? I want to do this now! Maybe in a dark purple :)
great question! I haven't shampooed it since, haven't needed to. I put a protective water resistant wax on top of it, but I may be too scared to risk it.
I’m about to try this and I’m so nervous lol your video def helped answer some of the questions I had
Yay! Good luck, Erin. You got this!!!
I can’t find that wax you used so which would work the same? Sealing wax or antiquing wax
Hi Lacy, thanks so much for the video - super helpful! How does the couch feel when you sit on it? Still soft or can you tell it’s painted? Do you use this coach often? Im considering painting my living room coach pink instead of buying a throw. Thanks again!
Please watch the follow up video I made called "DON'T PAINT YOUR COUCH UNTIL YOU WATCH THIS" :)
@@LaciJaneDIYthis is the video we're watching. I watched it and never heard the answer to her question.
I loved this video , I know you mentioned you paid 250 before you painted it and put the jewels 💎. If you had to sell it after giving it that beautiful make over , how much money would you sell it for if you wanted to make a profit ? Just curious
SERIOUSLY AMAZING!!!! Just love it!!
Thank you!
Your couch is Beautiful. I love the color.!! Good job.
Thank you Vanessa!
Can you ise regular paint for the walls and just dilute it a bunch with water?

Sooo what kind of paint did you use? Chalk paint? DIY chalk paint? Or can you use regular paint?
Thanks for the tips! It looks so good! 🙌🏻🙌🏻😘👍🏻

what if the sofa has stains? It is a white sofa and I want to paint it white or pale pale grey. The stain will come through I would think?
I would like to know if this works on microfiber??
Angie Hernandez most people say you can’t. I’ve done it before. I had to sand a lot between coats. But if your couch is a big fluffy coach. I’d get Great Bay home slipcovers. They’re nicer than other brands.
Can I use it on faux suede fabric

I know this is an old video ,but how long before you can use the furniture after you paint it
It turned out beautiful
Thanks !
Do you sit on the couch everyday?
Okay sorry if i missed it but did you say what grit you used?
What happens if you spill something on it would it come out in the wash?

@Chasing The Joneses
your lipstick 😍😍😍💖
had to match with my couch ha ha
Can you make a video If the person is wet sitting on the sofa.
What will happen
Does it matter what material?
I spray painted my dining room chair cushions and my color is uneven. can I correct this by using the chalk oaint to dye them. I used brown spray paint
I don’t think it’s a idea if u spray painted first
But lmk if it worked
how about using white jeans?
Quick question and I hope you can answer this.. is the can paint better than the spray paint? Because i found chalk paint in a spray pain so I'm wondering if it's the same or not
Don't use spray paint to paint your couch
Wait so what’s your recipe for furniture paint ??
do you have the recipe for making your own chalk paint ?
How did you couch hold up???
Thank you! Fun color!!
Thanks Nancy!
What the recipe for the DIY chalk paint? My husband and I have recently decided instead of buy new furniture we want to paint what we have. I would really appreciate it!!!
1/3 cup plaster of Paris 1/3 cup water 1 cup paint
Hi, do u think painting a couch with a dark fabric to a lighter colour would work?
Possibly, although I haven't tried it. I'm assuming it would work but take many more coats.
can you paint a black jumbo cord sofa to grey with chalk paint.
and also can you use spray chalk paint.
Can someone please list the brand of the paint that can be used to paint a sofa made out of fabric
Can you try that with white jeans???
Striking project! The jewels are the perfect embellishment.
Respectfully, though, no matter how many times people who have successfully re-coloured an upholstered piece insist that it's not really 'painting', that it is really 'dyeing' doesn't make it so.
Dyes are chemicals derived from plants and animals or synthetics that change the colour of what they are applied to via molecular bonding that actually changes the molecules of the original (fibre, yarn, thread or fabric).
Indigo is the only exception and it gets grandfathered in because it is unlike any other substance used to change the colour of fibre, yarn, thread or fabric (in short, under special conditions, the extra oxygen molecules are temporarily removed from indigo which makes them even tinier than they already are so that they wedge into the microscopic crevices in fibres, yarns, thread and fabrics; when the object being dyed is lifted out of the indigo bath, it is a pale yellow/green colour which then turns blue as the indigo molecules re-attach to oxygen molecules in the air, which also makes the indigo molecules physically larger and so more firmly embedded).
Paints are pigments that are glued to whatever they are applied to. That's what paint is--coloured glue. Glues can be very thick, such as sculpting epoxies or very thin, such as Superglue. Fabric paints include thin bodied paints with the approximate consistency of water (Jacquard Dye-Na-Flo is one brand, SEI Tumble Dyes are another brand) that do not change the hand of the fabric. There are even heatset additives available so that fabric paints do not have to be exposed to heat in order to bond properly.
There's nothing wrong with fabric paints! For instance, when clothing manufacturers identify their clothing as 'pigment dyed', they are actually referring to fabric paints.
Knowing whether you are dyeing or painting is helpful in figuring out how best to tackle a project and how to fix things if something goes wrong at some point.
I see what you're saying...I was just trying to make an analogy and let people know not to paint over the couch...but more so to make sure they use LOTS of water and let the paint/water mixture seep into the fabric rather than painting over it. Make sense? Thanks for your explanation!!
Does it have to be chalk paint ? X
If u have a dark couch would a lighter come out better if you panted the couch white first?
That is a tricky question, Laurie. I would say it would be better to paint it white first because that will lighten it up enough to get to the color you want. It will take a lot of work and patience. But essentially, you would have to prime it if you want it to come out to the color you want, if the color you want is lighter than what the couch currently is.
Laci Jane DIY hi I was wondering if this a water based paint does it become activated again if it gets wet and then get you all messy, cause I started painting 2 cushions and I wiped one with a cloth the cloth dried but when I wet it a little bit the paint was on my hands

I love it !!!
Yay!
hello I came across your video I want to also paint a couch just have a question.. if something were to get onto the couch is that spot able to get wet and washed without removing the color?
That's a good question. I believe you would be ok as long as you sealed it with a wax and sealed it good with the paint and water mixture
Just watched your DIY on how you painted the couch - amazing! I never knew you could do this and am dying to try.
Would love to hear your opinions on my house as a fellow DIY'er, if you have any time to pop by and check out the first episode I would really appreciate any and all feedback :)
Excited to see more of your videos!!
Ok, I will have to check them out!
You look younger the older you get. HOW?! loooove that couch.
staaahhhp. lol. it's good to hear that going into my 30s though :)
I almost got out my glue gun, staple gun and recycled fabric todo my couch. This is gonna make things so much easier!
What did u use to seal it ?
I love it
do you think this trick would work on a darker and heavier fabric like tweed?
It should
How did you shampoo it ?
Completely off topic, however your hair is gorgeous! Oh, and the couch thing is pretty cool, as well :)
Aw thank you so much!
You are very inspiring 🦋
Oh wow, thanks Pamela!
I need this couch in my life...
it's a happy couch
Didn’t you worry about mold tho?
DID YOU SEAL IT?
do you think this would work going to a lighter color?
I don't see why not
How did you shampoo it? I just got a couch with similar material and don't know how to clean it.
I just used a regular carpet shampooer
still looks great
Thanks!
DOES THIS WORK ON MICROFIBER?
