I've been a teacher for almost 30 years, and i can share a similar hack. We always do a lot of t-shirt decorating with the kids for holidays and school events, and fabric paint can be really expensive when you need to buy enough for 100 kids. You can make your own fabric paint using regular acrylic paint and adding a very small amount of fabric softener. About one half teaspoon per one cup of paint is a good ratio. It's not exact, but if you use too much, the mixture can get lumpy. This makes a fabric paint that WILL NOT wash out. You can also thin this mixture out with water and put in a spray bottle as well (just thin it out quite a bit or it will clog the sprayer.)
With time the painted furniture will soften and feel and look even more like leather. My mom painted a couch in 1975 and it lasted for years and looked awesome.
@@hawkessa Latex paint is basically a plastic, so it doesn't absorb liquid or anything wet. If you spill something on it you can just wipe it off. You can also easily clean the whole piece with a damp cloth. Basically, you can clean it like Tupperware or any other plastic.

WoW. This video gives me inspiration for an old fabric chair in my dressing room! I can't wait to try this out. I'm going to try a version in yellow 💛 later so I will let you know how that works out.
If you give the fabric a light sand with 220 grit sandpaper, it will become super smooth. I've painted my dining room chairs and they turned out AMAZING!
It’s definitely a California thing to have amazing thrift stores. When I lived there I found and endless supply of amazing home decor and clothes. I think it’s all the rich people getting rid of stuff and people who like to switch out clothes really often. Idk what it is but I miss it.
It’s definitely a big city/affluent area thing. The thrift stores in the northern suburbs of Chicago can have really awesome finds because people get rid of stuff they’ve barely used
I have the perfect chair for this. I was inspired by your Grandfather's room makeover that I've started the same type of pallet in my bedroom, and painting my chair would add the perfect accessory, I can't wait!
Please do an update on how the fabric wears in a future video! I love the look of leather furniture but it's far too sticky for a Texas summer so this would be an amazing workaround.
I also live in Texas where leather is .. not an option. Lol I've been looking for a smallish chair to put in my bedroom, and THEN I saw this video and I was like.. oh hell yeah. So I found the perfect $20 chair.. and I will be trying for a "vintage" black leather look. .. mostly cuz I always have some sort of black paint on hand. I'm curious to see what it'll look like! It's a "good bines" chair and the fabric is not too bad.. definitely not my style, but I'm hoping to change that with just some time and a lil trial and error.
I live in Houston and did this a year ago. I used the softener/latex formula and the chair is used daily as my office chair. Still looks great and doesnt need a refresh yet. I sit in it 5 days a week for 6-8 hours
What I want to know is who even thought of adding fabric softener to paint to get a leather look? A chemist? A paint factory owner? Love the look - amazed at whoever figured this would work!👏🏻😎❤️
I’m not sure that the fabric softener has anything to do with it looking like leather. I think the shading makes that happen. I’m about to paint some outdoor cushions with the same formula but just one color. Also planning to paint a small couch with the three color leather look. We’ll see how it goes.
I think the leather look is from the paint mix of hues. The fabric softener probably just helps it not solidify into a rigid paint shell and be more of a stain.
@@DR-bp1yu Yeah, my first thought is that straight paint would dry and crackle and the fabric softener maybe softens the chemicals in the paint to blend into the fabric. I wonder how it works overtime. Does anyone know how this chair held up after a year?
@@oscarfelix1952 Yeah, I saw a couch that was painted with this technique and it had been a few years. It held up well, stayed soft and pliable, was fairly stain resistant and cleaned up easy.
Testing Starts at 6 minutes. Great idea. The end result is quite amazing. I once knew a woman who painted her cream carpet with watered-down brown acrylic paint. It worked great, carpet was still very soft.
Wow, this turned out great! What a great idea to add fabric softener, probably smells great, too. Was your paint a gloss, semi-gloss, satin, or whatever?
OMG DREW!!!! This is sooooo gorgeous, it looks just like leather!!! So cool! Crazy inspiration, I did see Dani paint her chair too and it turned out so beautiful. I'm curious though, Dani put on a wax to soften the paint and I noticed you didn't. How soft is it? Do you think you will need to put a coat of wax on it? Thanks Drew
THIS VIDEO MAKES ME SO MADE. WHEN I THINK ABOUT ALL THE CHAIRS I PASSED OVER AT THE THRIFT STORE CUZ I DIDN'T LIKE THE COLOR/FABRIC AND I COULD'VE JUST DONE THIS 😣😣😣 Next time Downey cocktail for me!
You should test this on those faux leather that are peeling off, there's usually fabric underneath after you peel everything, if it works it would be an amazing technique to avoid losing those pieces.

WoW. This video gives me inspiration for an old fabric chair in my dressing room! I can't wait to try this out. I'm going to try a version in yellow 💛 later so I will let you know how that works out.
This is literally the coolest thing I've ever seen! That is wild!
If you give the fabric a light sand with 220 grit sandpaper, it will become super smooth. I've painted my dining room chairs and they turned out AMAZING!
This looks beautiful! But seriously, does anyone have thrift store envy 😂 Mine barely have any furniture 😫
Half of the "finds" seem planted. My 2nd hand stores are fulla junk.
The thrift stores in the northern suburbs of Chicago can have really awesome finds because people get rid of stuff they’ve barely used
I have a chair with fabric I hate, I am definitely going to try this! Your shading made all the difference! Great job!
Ur work ethics is bomb
I have the perfect chair for this. I was inspired by your Grandfather's room makeover that I've started the same type of pallet in my bedroom, and painting my chair would add the perfect accessory, I can't wait!
Great project. So helpful. And first time I ever enjoyed the music on a diy video ! Thanks !
Please do an update on how the fabric wears in a future video! I love the look of leather furniture but it's far too sticky for a Texas summer so this would be an amazing workaround.
Yes I also would like to know how it feels/wears. Would love to try a light grey or silverish color on the bench in my bedroom!!
.... and how does one clean a painted chair too.
I also live in Texas where leather is .. not an option. Lol
I've been looking for a smallish chair to put in my bedroom, and THEN I saw this video and I was like.. oh hell yeah.
@@Domino_0604 thanks for that information! Glad to know it'll withstand the South East Texas humidity 👍
Great job, I'd add some copper stud tacks along the front to really boost the look.
@@oscarfelix1952 Read @Terri Kash comments above....
This is crazy! I can't wait to hear how it wears. Please keep us posted. I wonder what happens is something spills on it.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT ALL THE CHAIRS I PASSED OVER AT THE THRIFT STORE CUZ I DIDN'T LIKE THE COLOR/FABRIC AND I COULD'VE JUST DONE THIS 😣😣😣
Next time Downey cocktail for me!
Me too.
This is super cool. That chair looks awesome!
Very satisfying to watch the paint go on so smooth
You should test this on those faux leather that are peeling off, there's usually fabric underneath after you peel everything, if it works it would be an amazing technique to avoid losing those pieces.
I love how it turned out! Now that it’s been 3 months, how has this process held up?
Ok, that is absolutely incredible. Dude, you made it look like an $800 chair. Great work. If I find some time in the Spring I definitely want to try this. Thanks and stay well.
The chair looks amazing. If I wouldn't have seen the transformation. I would've never thought it wasn't leather. Magnificent 👏💖
