    I have personally witnessed a 8 oz torpedo weight and 14/0 treble hook go through a Seagull and also a aluminum Jon boat. We used homemade 7' 6" bamboo rods that out preformed any other rod. The regulation for a snagging rod in Kentucky was 7' 6" or shorter. Our homemade snagging rods had only 2 eyes. The tip top eye and a large 1" to 1 1/2" guide eye. The tip top eye was epoxy glued to a 1/4" steel rod that was 6" long that was epoxy glued in the bamboo and reinforced with 2 stainless steel hose clamps. The reel was held on with hose clamps and the entire rod was wrapped with black electrical tape. The more guide eyes you have on a rod, the more resistance you will have on the casting distance. I wouldn't recommend only 2 eyes on any manufacturer rod. Excellent video! Thank you.

    I've been long casting the Tx coast for over 30 years. I'd say no difference between the 2 as far as this video goes. Just the difference in strength that was used could have made the difference. You probably could not even tell the difference in strength used. You would have to take at least 3 cast per each rig and then average them out. Also take a few minutes after the long walk before you cast again. I think just about everything else I could add has already in the comments.

    The reel and line you use will have just as much impact on cast distance as the rod. The narrower the line diameter the better. Also your reels spoon makes a huge difference too. You also want a reel with a very slow oscillation rate. Finally you want to make sure your spool is completely filled with line. If every yard matters to you the u will also gain some distance by getting your line wet before the big cast. Nice vid.

      Not knocking you but I thought high spools were better for distance. Like the penn spinfisher vi 7500 lc. Is that what you mean by high spool?

      Yeah he was on the third cast. Breathing hard. So the penn just got his "Fresh" cast. Also Ugly sticks are extremely durable but they can be a sittle more flimsy whereas the penn would be a little more stiff which would help the cast. He went UP and over 2 trees with the ugly so it might not have went as far but was that the sticks fault? the distance was there. He just sent it upwards instead of outwards.

    I use a shimano vortex 15foot surf rod and either a 4 or 5oz sand grabber sinker (sputnik for Americans) I range anywhere from 130 meters to 200 meters depending on wind and other conditions. My reel is a cheap no name chinese reel which is loaded with cheap chinese braid (30lb) and a 50lb mono shock leader so I can really load up that rod during a cast. I do a pendulum cast , not the official type competition pendulum cast but my own version of it that works for me. My sinker hangs down to just below the the biggest line guide ring on the rod to start my cast. It took quite a bit of practice out in a paddock on the farm to get it as good as I could. I don't always have to cast long distance sometimes the fish are in close like 30 meters from the shore so check by casting different distances until you hit where the fish are hanging out. Hope this info helps you catch more fish..... Cheers from NZ

    Fast action all the way for longer casts. The faster a rod "snaps straight" (not vibrating) after the initial cast, the less resistance to the line as it spools out.

      @kingrider75, Can you recommend a couple of conventional reels for me? I want long casts and I have no idea that conventional reels actually cast farther! I thought it is the other way around since I've never used a conventional reel before! What I want is a conventional reel for casting in the surf for striped bass, bluefish, jacks, and mackerels. If you could list a couple for me I would appreciate it!

    Dear sir, may I suggest next time, moving the reel from the first rod to the second rod to counter act any spooling differences, also performing at lest 5 casts for each rod, before moving the reel, to gain an average distance. all the comments about different lines and reels are not so relevant when the rod action is the point of the test. all up a pretty good demo.

    OK, you walked down to the first cast, then ran down to the gate and walked back to your first cast. Then walked back to do the first cast on the US that went out of bounds and over the trees only to be just a little short. Then walked back down and cast the US for a third cast in a few minutes, and got it straight this time and you said by your guesstimation 7 yds. difference. I surmise the walking well over 4 hundred yds. before your final cast of the US could have hampered your ability to cast it the 7 yds. it would have needed to to make the contest a tie. :) :) Just saying. :)

    Great video, here's a tip to add 15+ yards to that cast. Before cast, make a 90 degree angle from rod tip to leader hanging HALF WAY down rod. While casting use left hand and pull down hard to utilize maximum momentum. Super rocket with this technique (leader halfway down your rod) will improve casting distance for sure. Great video though thanks

    When casting at the football field, my I suggest using a golf ball inside a tennis ball.
    The weight will be between 3½ and 3¾ ozs. you won't get the distance of a lead weight but it will be safer in case of a person/vehicle hit.
    Another benefit is that you can usually follow the ball flight and tell whether it's going to be a good cast whilst it's still in the air.

    The ugly stiks are tried and true. Great bite detection with the 10, 11, 12’ers . So many great affordable rods on the market now but the ugly stick is definitely a good choice for throwing bait rigs.. the the 12’ tsunami Airwave rods rated for up to 6oz are my everyday rods. A strong caster can send a 4oz sinker out over 100yds. The 12’ 3-6oz airwave is nearly the perfect pomp rod. Awesome bite detection
    Keep your eyes open for old school glass rods like the 11-13’ honey lamiglas or fenwick. So much fun pomp fishing with the old glass rods paired up with 704/706 penn reels

    Nice video. I like the side by side comparison. And even just the one cast on each rod give useful info. But from a statistical point of view one cast is not sufficient to say which rod cast further. Lots of variables during the casting process. Wind, power applied, timing, etc. That first cast with the ugly stick went across the field at a diagonal so the distance to the sinker was further than it appeared. I imagine if you took the line and placed it alongside the line of the Shakespeare it actually went further. So you probably need a half dozen casts with each and average the distance. Of course the probability of hitting a car goes up exponentially!! Thanks again for the video...

    • @hantheman7
      @hantheman7 3 роки тому

      I agree. I think 10 casts per rod and then swap out the reels(one spool might be fuller with newer line) and then do another 10 casts logging the distances. Wind could be a factor as well! I want to see a consistent difference or not a consistent distance. I think you need to find a safer area to cast them, maybe a farmer's field?

  • @mryorkie
    @mryorkie 3 роки тому +2

    It also depends on what type of rig you use for fishing will also effect the distance and the bait being used..

  • @rickjames6948
    @rickjames6948 4 роки тому +6

    Couple things. First cast, you had more energy to cast. You can hear your voice you were pushing it while walking quickly. Next 2 casts you were more fatigued. Cast 1 and 3 you had better form. Cast 2 you dropped the rod tip early. So for the ugly stik and the 2 yards, it went through 2 trees and only fell 2 yards short? I call it a draw or a slight edge to the ulgy stik.

    • @garyhall4542
      @garyhall4542 4 роки тому

      True, if he would of walked the second weight to where the first landed it would of been further, due to how far left he cast. I reckon it would of beat it by at least 5 if not 10 yards. I also reckon in strong winds the Penn would handle more casting weight and perform better. I'd rather have soft rods though for playing the fish

    Great experiment. To get a really better understanding of which is better would be to be somewhere and do at least 5 casts per rod to see how much variability you would get . More fast would show better results as for distance and consistency in cast to cast. But other than that great demonstration of how far these combos can actually go which is amazing

    Kudos to you for getting out there and testing your rods!
    Those are great casts, especially since you didn't use your left hand to put more power into the cast. Like you, I don't use the pendulum cast either, nor do I put my sinker on the ground. I think you might get even more distance if you tried the overhead thump cast as described by Ryan White of Hatteras Jack's. You get the left arm into the cast by extending your arms upward, and using your left hand (if you are right handed) to pull down on the end of the rod butt to efficiently load the rod. The left hand provides more power because it travels in a larger arc than the right hand. I know your cast works for you because I've seen the fish that you've caught in some of your other videos, but I'm curious to know if you would get even more distance with the overhead thump cast. Ryan White appears at 7:30 in the SurfcastersJournal Episode #7 Improving Your Cast video on UA-cam.
    I used to live near a soccer field and that's where I'd compare surf my rods, so I can relate to lines over trees, sinkers slightly off target, and concerns about hitting people or cars. I can cast 2 and 3 ounce sinkers over 100 yards with my 8, 9, and 10 foot rods, but I never cast more than 110 yards or so. I think you are right to use 12 foot rods to get more distance.

    Tony, very entertaining video. Don’t forget the sensitivity of the rod as a factor in catching fish. I have three ugly sticks but my oldest one which is 12’ is the better ugly stick. I have a Penn Spinfisher rod but it is only 10’. I did not like it when ugly sticks started using the all metal rod guides on their rods. My older one has ceramic inserts in the guides and will cast further than the new ones. I have heard of some folks who have had more broken lines because of the metal guides. Still I have one and I use it. I like the sensitivity. My favorite rods are from Offshore Angler labeled “Ocean Master”. I have them in three lengths depending on where and what I am doing. I guarantee they will outcast your Penn Squadron II. I say my best cast with the Ocean Master was 150-160 yds. but I couldn’t do it now. There is a long gas main right-of-way just above my house that is my casting zone; I use it mostly to test reels rather than distance. It is about 80 yds. wide by 300 yds. long before some significant hills get in the way. After three rotator-cuff shoulder surgeries my long cast days are now over. One of my favorites for accuracy and enjoyable fishing is an old South Bend Black Beauty 10” rod. I love your videos. I never know what you are going to do next. Keep up the great work! You know I love the vintage reels but the reel has a lot to do with a long cast. I have a Daiwa Emblen X 5500T reel with the long cast spool that is awesome. It’s an older reel but I wouldn’t call it vintage. Also my old Mitchell 488 can really put a line out there!

    never used either rods...but other than casting distance, other things to consider would be sensitivity and weight of the blank. i generally tend to hold the rod whilst fishing. so these two two other factors play a huge role for me. i get similar distance to what you got with my spinning Penn 10" carnage 2 surf rod (3oz lead) casting in surf conditions. if you lengthen the drop a bit more..you can load up the blank more. thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for this video. I haven't gotten far at all yet, but I have a Penn fierce 3 6000 I just spooled with 50lb power pro braid. It had 25 lb mono before... I haven't invested properly in a rod yet, but the guy who sold me one to go with the 6000 at Dick's sorta messed me up and talked me into buying an 8'6" Okuma downrigger... It was for casting or trolling reels, and I didn't know it!! I had just gotten started fishing seriously last year, and the idea of surf fishing was super new. I'm a truck driver who has a little time at different beaches so I thought I'd get a setup... I found a near mint vintage Diawa surf rod at a thrift store for $12 I was gonna try out, but I want something a bit more modern!!

    I was able to do some of the same sort of testing at a community outdoor sports area. Using a hunting rangefinder I had basically the same results of casts all easily over 100yds+. On the best days, no head wind, no bait drag, etc etc it's easy to get out 100+yds. Fight a head wind, bait drag your cast distance will drop easily. My rods were either a Tsunami or a Mojo....no significant difference using either one . Where you will gain distance is in the line you are using, the line weight rating, how it's wrapped on the spool, and how much is on the spool. When the spool is filled to edge it' going to throw farther, use a lighter test line (IE 30lb vs 65lb test) your lighter weight will throw further. Nice video!!

    Casting is great and it is important. However, how will that rod hold up over time? In golf, a driver is replaced by an iron, to a putter. A fishing rod has to do all of the necessary jobs in one hard working piece of equipment. How are the eyelets holding up on that Penn versus the Ugly Stik? Or the handle and grip? Which rod has the best warranty?
