i bass fished with my first ugly from when i was 12 til about age 16. mine broke about 12 inches from the top in a tailgate and i cried like my dog ran away. :(
i feel you bro i had my 7 foot medium heavy 1 piece rod ugly stick since i was 7 i had fished it salt water fresh water i lost it at the bottom of the kemah bridge and got it back and still caught fish then 1 day i was throwing a catfish leadr and 4 inches from the top just broke and i cried for ever
lol reminds me of a time a buddy of mine had his ugly stick propped on the side of the boat with a live shrimp on the other end. i turned my head when i heard some commotion, just in time to see it flip over the side... and kerplop it went. We used bottom rigs to troll the bottom, in a half hearted effort to snag the rod and reel or the line it was attached to. After about 10 casts he was lucky enough to snag the line and got the rod and real back minus the fish and live shrimp. :P
I lived out in Washington state for several years and mostly fished for halibut and king salmon. I always used a Shakespeare 6.6 intercostal medium 2 pc and I now use an intercostal medium heavy 1 pc. I have other high end poles and reels, I currently fish for nothing but walleye, catfish and paddles when in season. I use the okuma stratus 35 and 55 on my poles and have caught some big flats, blues and paddles. I love this set up.
I have several 7ft Ugly Stik GX2's. They are paired with Pflueger President reels and I love them for light salt water action. The reels are smooth as butter and the rods are tough as nails. That combo was strong enough to pull in a 48 inch redfish a few years back.
You can fix that easily by moving the handle higher up or gluing a wooden dowel through the break from the bottom. Just use a heat gun to remove the butt end rubber knob.
Ugly stick GX2 rods with Shimano sienna reels are the only setup I use. Tough, reliable, cheap, yet performs pretty well. Sufix elite mono on panfish and bass rods, berkley X9 braid and steel leader on large catfish and pike rod. Can't go wrong with the setup. Been using Ugly Stiks and shimano spinning reels since I was a teenager in the late 90's. My panfish rod and reel is over 20 years old and still works great, even with no maintenance.
I own 8 Ugly Sticks from 6 to 80lbs class. Some of which I’ve had for over 20yrs. While I like these tests, being that I’m unwilling to do it to my own rods, someone is going to split their face open if they’re not careful. I’ve seen it happen on a Party Boat. Guy is fighting a big fish. He over tightened the drag, the line snapped while the rod was directly in front of him. His Hands, Reel and Rod hit him in the face so hard, that he knocked himself out and face planted the deck before any of us could react. Poor guy lost an eye, needed nose & face reconstruction, the works. He still goes fishing by the way, but it was heartbreaking to have seen.
Left a like for suitcase Erin 👍🏽 I'm glad I got to see something that compares to a fish actually running and taking line like with the big wheel. Looks fun! I enjoyed it
I’ve got one of those rods. Bet my friend I could attach 75lbs on the end of it and it would easily handle it. He said there’s no way that floppy thing will hold 75lbs off the ground. Won a bet that day.
owned several over my life time and have never broken one. stepped on slammed car door on 3 at different times. lost 2 overboard on my boat when a fish hit an unattended rod. right now I have med action 6ft with 12lb test I use for flounder off a pier. redfish snook trout flounder and it keeps doing it.s thing. tight lines.
It depends on how your fishing when I am reef bottom fishing I will take a ugly stik over any other rod you never know what your going to hook up with so I will take strength over sensitivity anyday
Senko Skipper they're a saltwater rod. been around for quite some time now. a friend of mine uses them for catfish and the action and flex is wonderful compared to the gx2. the ugly stick lite pro is also a good one. don't own one myself but have used them.
A friend of mine got an uglystick surf caster in the mail along with a bait runner reel. He tried out a few casts without any line on just for fun, just seeing how it handled. The tip went flying into the bushes and he knocked off a couple of guides. Anyway, since he'd never installed new guides before he took it to an expert. 3 weeks later he finally had the opportunity to try his new rod. Lesson learned, don't cast your rod without checking it's properly put together and without line.
Somebody needs to do this challenge with the hardest part fist to see if hold up from the start, Bc all the testes wear it kid so we can't tell how it reallly handles the hard test
I have the same rod and love it, you wouldn't break that rod Fresh water fishing, but loved the extreme testing. I have been using Ugly stik rods for over 20 years, and many of my guide captains (use to be the fishing manager at a Gander mountain) from lake Erie would only use them because of there strength. Great Video!
Caught a 32oz 10lb rainbow trout on a spinner on 4lb fluorocarbon… on an Ugly Stik ultra light didn’t break, caught the fish, and is still my lucky trout rod!
My wife is just in love with the ugly stik. I have to admit, hooking a 35+ pound sturgeon with light duty rod and the 40 pound braid snaps. The rod looked like a U but held!!!
Just bought the Ugly Stick Gold, 8' long in 6-10kg medium heavy, matched with the Ugly Tuff SP60 reel. Have yet to take it out for a fish. Can't wait to use it.
To be honest, I’ve never broken an ugly stick before BUT I have lost 1 into the water and recovered 1. I still have the recovered one along with the Abu Garcia Revo SX Reel. Ever since I’ve never use this specific setup, why? It caught a 5’10” Catfish (my height). I have it locked up in a glass shelf against the wall. It was one of the scariest/exciting moment of my life.
I still fish with my six foot Ugly Stik that I bought in 1979! I use it occasionally for inshore fishing off of my boat. Of course, I have never caught an "eighty something" pound anything with it. I also have other seven footers in medium and ultra light models too.
I have owned plenty of ugly sticks, primarily across the tiger series. They are good value rods if you are on a budget or don’t fish all the time. I have never broken off a rod and caught tons of fish on them and don’t have anything poor to say, they are the Honda civics of rods.
Shimano Bait Runner and a Ugly Stick rod that combination has been my favorite outfit since I was in my late 20’s and now I’m 66. But, it’s time for me to try something new. Just to be doing something new. I will still always have that outfit available though.
@@jamesdean6744 Ah hadta be at least 30lbs. Even the footlongs will give a helluva fight. I've moved to different rods for inshore, but still use the Ugly Sticks for the Surf and Jetties
for years and years all I ever used was an Ugly Stix 6'6" medium rod and either a Zebco 33 Classic or a Quatum Hypercast spinning reel...those were the only two rod and reel combos I ever used...and the great thing is that these rods (and then the reels I chose) were inexpensive. and I caught more bigger fish and tougher fish than I ever have since...hmmm...time to sell some gear and get back to basics! :) thanks for the video!
+Michael GONZO Gonzalez nice, they are reliable rods. The expensive high end ones are great for sensitivity, but I don't think they are as durable as the uglystick. Thanks for sharing
What a great video! The Kira game was awesome. I've got several ugly sticks, and I was always impressed with them, never broke one yet, of course I've never had a tug of was with a kid on a big wheel either lol, excellent touch!
Love the GX2, cheap yet reliable pole. Great for fresh and salt water fishing. The only con is that over a year of fishing salt water, the eyes of the pole rust and break off. But, the good thing of living in fishing active place is that you can get the eyes replaced really cheap that can handle the salt water.
if you ever get the chance you should visit the keys and hit the wrecks for some amberjack. they are usually under 150 feet of water, I've caught plenty using a deep drop rig with life bait or even using a jig. if you do happen to go for amberjack and you choose to cook it then I suggest smoking it but be sure to clean it well, most have some parasites in their side meat. smoke with apple wood or whatever else you prefer. keep up the great work
Interesting! Looks like the drag was set to max strength to really put more pressure on the rod, so considering if I take that rod after some smaller inshore sharks or what have you, that would probably hold up really well. Sensitivity won't mater much then!
just got back from the pier in L.B.C, MEDIUM 7 FT GX2, SHIMANO SIENNA 4000, 20 LBS POWER PRO BRAID , ONE OUNCE KROCODILE SPOON, SOMETHING ALMOST OUTSPOOLED ME AT MAX DRAG 20 LBS, I BENT THE GX2 AT HOME A FEW TIMES TO TEST IT OUT BUT IT WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO TONIGHT FOUGHT 45 MINUTES THEN SNAPPED MY POWER PRO, IT FELT LIKE A SHARK I THINK A THRESHER I CAN FEEL IT GOING CRAZY BUT NEVER GOT TO SEE IT , IT KIND OF SURFACED UNDER A FOREST OF SEAWEED BUT THEN KEPT DIVING , EVEN USED MY HAND WRAPPED IN MY JACKET ON THE LINE AND WAS FORCED TO MOVE AT MAX DRAG, SECOND SHARK ON MEDIUM UGLYSTIK GX2 FROM PIER, ON ACCIDENT, NICE.
