I just reached Destin florida today. I am going to hit the beach at 6am tomorrow. I have 5 different set ups I will be using. I will throw some dry casts and measure.
Im glad to see this video from a Texan. Sometimes distance matters especially at low tide. There’s so much to learn about distance casting. You have the right equipment for it. Hope to see more information from you on the subject in the future. Would love to see a series that shows how distance casting can improve your fishing. Lotta guys, usually ones that can’t cast, downplay the importance of long distance.

I Fish the Cape Cod Canal with some success… I have been aspiring at age 90 to cast further.. your video is the best that I have ever seen. You are a great instructor and articulate and knowledgeable… so surgery is coming up this winter hopefully 2025 I’ll make a comeback.. at least I got my Whitetail deer with my crossbow.. I’m following you by the way I really like your sense of humor. I see that you have your future back up right under you. That’s nice. Happy new year.

Just stumbled onto this video. Got a 12" Daiwa Surf coming in a week. Catfish specialist. Going to watch this video over and over. This is THEE BEST video on UA-cam period, for learning how to cast a surf rod. The best!!
Hi, after watching one of your videos I FINALLY got it right to cast a conventional reel. Your description is detailed and your method is easy to follow. Thanks ☺️
Thank you hahaha, my game just went up so much, hit a point I was aiming for for years, on my first cast, my following ones got even further. Thank you so much, my dad never really had the chance before his stroke to pass on this cast to me, pulling it off really meant a lot to me. Thanks man

thank you very much for this Lesson. I became a Squall for X-mas and now i have to learn the right way to cast it right. great Video an best Regards from Germany
awesome video. wen i first started surfcasting, it didn't matter wat cheap gear i used but wen i practiced my casting distance as well as learning to adapt to the gear i used, i was able to improve my distance casting which felt realy gr8. i particuarly enjoy using the big fixed spool surfcasting reels.
I'm going to do a weekday trip so the beach will be empty to try this with minimal casualties. What I usually use is a swellpro fishing drone to fly my baits out it can fly over 2 lbs of cargo. Furthest I've done is 250 yards on my Penn Slammer 3 8000 with 65lb braid.
Mahalo nui for a great video. Very similar hardware and techniques to Hawaiian Ulua (GT) fishing. Except we usually cast from sea cliffs baitless, then side the bait down the line. One cast for the whole night then sliding multiple baits during the night instead of reeling in and checking.
To practice my casting at my local park, I cut a hole in a tennis ball and shove a bankshot inside to keep it from lodging into the dirt. Makes it a lot easier to reel in too.
Hi, well actually John states that the lead should be placed under the rod between the rod tip and your feet to give instant pre load so when you hit the rod the blank is under compression from the start. But, i did enjoy the video as you did cover the important points and i would love to try that 10ft rod on a uk beach, when faced with rough tidal conditions and using big squid baits and what a great conger rod that could be. Unfortunately we don't see tackle from your side of the pond, but i would be interested to know if anyone imports this rod. Regards Bill

Decided to try this with my brand new 12’ rod with a penn spinning 8k, spooled with 50lb braid and about 9-10 oz of weight. After admiring how far I was able to cast... I noticed a flap of skin hanging off of my casting finger... mannn did that braid slice right through me... lesson learned, use something to protect my casting finger...
I noticed that you don't have your thumb on the spool as you cast. I just started using conventional reels. I keep my thumb wet and on the spool as I cast to prevent it from bird nesting. But i see thay you only apply your thumb to stop and lock the bail. Please do tell. Love your videos.

Quick tip for those that don’t know, when casting conventional reels without that surgical rubber stop, if you wet your reel/spool before casting it’ll stop you from getting that mono line burn 👍🏼
I really appreciate the tips I cast good sometimes at Galveston but then I have days that I just ask myself was that good enough “no” so there I go bring all that line back in lol thanks man I can finally feel elite af
Hey there bud, sorry in advance for the headache of a question but I just bought my first conventional reel and I can’t make up my mind on how to spool it. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal but I have a short window to fish & don’t have time to test different setups because I’m working out of town now. Are you still running 50lb braid w/ a 10ft 50lb mono shock leader these days? And what kind of mono is your shock leader? Copolymer or leader material or….? And how does that knot affect your casting distance? I’m thinking about no shock leader so there’s no knot running through the guides. Just a Fluoro leader outside of the guides during cast. I’m just worried about (1) the knot going through the guides and (2) a braid birds nest. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Oh… and how many ounces are you casting? 3, 4, 5, or 6oz? I’ll be planning on casting 6oz so I’m thinking I need 60lb test to handle that.
Hey brother love the video. I have a Shakespeare ugly stik for a long time is 11 ft. heavy action. (BWS 1100) What type of reel do you recomend for it.? Im looking to go to Daytona beach next month and take it with me. I need a good reel for it not heavy duty because Im a small dude and this will make the rod too heavy for me to cast. This is a spinning rod not conventional. Hope to hear from you soon thanks.

@@1093lilsmoke its nice. But I surf fish and wading out to the 2 sandbar the throw over the 3rd gets saltwater in it. I had to clean it after a few day cause it started making whiny noises. I had better results with 30lb braid and 30lb mono top shot with 4oz spider weight. Also it needs a long light rod like those penn carnage. My cheap bulky one just wasnt right. I threw my bait off almost everytime
Brent Billig lighter braid just kept digging/breaking me. My conventional reels are a Penn Squall 15 & Abu 6500 CL3 converted to a CT Mag. I use 50lb braid-40lb leader. I use 30lb braid on spinning setups. Hope that whining goes away and doesn’t effect the performance of your yonder.
Seems like a good way to get the power into the cast. Any tips for avoiding backlash? Running 30# braid and pitching about 8 oz out there but getting some backlash and snap offs when the baits about halfway there. Is this a problem with spool tension and mag setting, or bad release point during the cast?
This is a good video. Casting long is a how to thing not a how hard you throw. I practice once a week or so in a field with a different rod each time for about an hour. Just laying the lead on the ground and doing the mechanics correctly will easily achieve 100+ yards 200 yards is not out of the question with a back swing and loading the rod correctly either. I know guys get outrageous distances with pendulum casts but that isn't necessary for fishing.
Useful. Solid casting advice. Only thing, I wish I could see the rig landing. Not really getting a sense of how far you're casting. I cannot gauge by the remaining line on the spool. I know that conventional reels are the fixed gear bike of surfcasting for the cool kids but ill be using a spinning reel off the beach.
I wouldn't say a conventional is like a fixie, because a conventional actually gets you out there efficiently lol, fixie bikes just make everything harder for no reason
Nice instructional vid! In the process of shopping for a new casting/conventional reel to go on a 12' Penn Battalion. I'll look into what you are recommending in this entire video not just the reel. I currently use Abu Blue Yonder on 12' Battalion and 30lbs mono with a 60lbs mono shock leader and we use fish finder rigs or the cantilever/catapult...I can't recall what the rig is called. I may try the braid/mono shock leader and the rig/leader you recommended. Looks like Ill be able to cast into the second/third gut from the shore using your method. As it is now I wade out quite a ways and maybe get a 40-60yard cast.
The video you did on reading the surf was also wonderful. After watching it I took an 8 ft 8 weight Flyrod to the beach and I recognized a cut only about 40 yards from shore. I waded out 15 to 20 yards and cast a big weighted streamer fly grey and silver. This resulted in a hit by a 38 inch bull red. It was absolutely fucking cool. It took me almost 100 yards into the backing and I chased it another 60 yards up and down the beach before landing it 30 min later. I released it within 2 or 3 minutes. Had it not been for your video I would never have known that this opportunity was even available so close to shore.
Do you always hook your bait to your sinker like that for casting? Does the bait just unhook itself once the cast is made or when it goes into the water?
Hey man i am new to surf fishing and i am looking for a good spinning set up for casting huge distances like you. Currently I have my eyes on the daiwa Ardito 11 foot mh and the penn slammer 3 6500. I picked the rod because its a 5 piece and good for travel and reel because of drag, price, and waterproofing. was wondering what you thought and if you had any better suggestions for a first surf set up.
Dont go out practicing these power casts in the backyard now 🤣
I just reached Destin florida today. I am going to hit the beach at 6am tomorrow. I have 5 different set ups I will be using. I will throw some dry casts and measure.

Throwing a 5oz sinker 80-90yds with mags halfway. 6oz(weight+bait) 100+yds on the squall 15 rn

I know that conventional reels are the fixed gear bike of surfcasting for the cool kids but ill be using a spinning reel off the beach.
I wouldn't say a conventional is like a fixie, because a conventional actually gets you out there efficiently lol, fixie bikes just make everything harder for no reason
Meanwhile, the guy next to him catches 14 fish while hes still waiting on his lure to finally hit the water.
Who make your custom rod looks bad ass
Random internet pick up basically lol
Ok thank you
Nice instructional vid!
Try to upgrade your rod. That will also give you extra distance
Great video and info. I loved the add 4 inches. There's too many jealous haters out there. Thanks for showing.
Too many man! Thanks for watching!
Will the Game Warden Sticker apply in North & South Carolina?
All over the us lol
Hey bro can you tell what shoes you wear on the jetty rocks
Nice casting sir...👍
Good stuff, Man!
5:03 how would u hook a bait to the sinker?
Did you & that guy on the pier cross lines ?
Killer video dude!
Do you always hook your bait to your sinker like that for casting? Does the bait just unhook itself once the cast is made or when it goes into the water?
What month does the red fish run occur?
Hey man i am new to surf fishing and i am looking for a good spinning set up for casting huge distances like you. Currently I have my eyes on the daiwa Ardito 11 foot mh and the penn slammer 3 6500. I picked the rod because its a 5 piece and good for travel and reel because of drag, price, and waterproofing. was wondering what you thought and if you had any better suggestions for a first surf set up.
