I like how you keep your equipment affordable. It's good to see someone catch big fish without using a the most expensive reel Penn, Shimano, or Daiwa is selling.
I have a slammer 3 5500 it was something I really wanted but I haven’t caught anything crazy a penn wrath 50 dollar combo could not…. I hope it last me forever I’m not buying another expensive reel.
You are the man!!! Love your videos and love how you are a frugal and humble guy! You also are a good teacher and are clear - easy to understand. Quick mention - I know you don't like to be making and tieing on leaders when you are out - so you can save time (after you get a break off). Something that has helped me a ton is to premake my leaders: small circle hook, nice fluoro leader and tiny tiny strong Spro swivel. I keep 5+ premade leaders in a few zip (sandwich) bags in my fishing bag/boxes. This helps me do a super quick tie on, when I'm broken off. Hope it helps. This helps with not only saving tons of time, but also keeps a very high-quality leader on my pole. Tight Lines!!!
I’m going saltwater fishing for the first time in Florida, and had no idea where to start as it is a totally different beast than freshwater. Your videos are super super helpful and helped get me what I need and I’m confident with it. Thank!
great explanation on which rod and reel you should be using under certain situations, would be helpful to point the max line weight that should be using with each of these reels and rods for the ones with less experience
Really wish I had found your channel years ago! Thanks for all you share. You’ve helped me so much. I have made my dollars stretch and had way better experiences
Just picked up a 49.99 Shimano 6ft rod for my boat. Got a 6ft rod because my boat doesn't hold 7ft rods. Learned that after I purchased the boat. Gonna have to sell my 7 footers and downsize. Glad I was your videos.
I had the same zebco rhino rod combo setup when I was a kid. It was like 89 and we were fishing on a pier in Panama City FL. I put a frozen cigar minnow on my hook and just chucked it out there , set my drag, and just left there. I literally forgot about it then 4 hrs later some yells who’s rod is this, it’s screaming drag! I look and I’m like oh shit that’s mine haha. I grab it and set the hook. Long story short I fought this fish for over 2 hrs as a 10 yr old kid and I was dead tired. It was a 50 + lb king mackerel haha my setup was literally dead after I was done. Reel was spent and rods tip snapped, I normally caught panfish, small strippers and white bass with it so it done. Great video and great setups.
Thanks for adding a valuable comment, great story. I love the Zebco Rhino rod. I actually slammed it in the car door the other day. I'll have to make it a five foot rod now. I caught a large King Mackerel of the Panama City Beach pier when I was young on a live cigar minnow at first light. Thanks for watching.
Very good info. Learned alot. Just moved to daytona beach florida and coming from bass fishing to now saltwater fishing i have been perplexed as to what reel size for what. Thanks to your video i now know. Thank you
Love the channel man. Just bought a Ugly Stick Gx2 per your recommendation and a PENN Pursuit IV 5000 series reel. Can't wait to set it up and bring in some big boys. Thanks for the videos and tips.
Glad I just found your channel. My question is I mainly do inshore fishing, i.e. flats, backwater, surf. On occasion I’ll go charter fishing for offshore fishing and fish for grouper, grunts, porgies, etc… I mainly use the open face rigs provided on the boat. However, I personally prefer spinning reel rigs. My question is I would like your recommendation for a setup just for offshore fishing. Reel size, Rod type, mainline fishing line, i.e. braid or mono, lb. Line size, etc… That way I can just have one setup to grab and go when fishing offshore. I appreciate and like your videos.
Thanks for the great advice. I will be fishing the West Coast inshore this summer, mostly Halibut, rays, Leopard Sharks and Sevengill Sharks. This should work out well for me and my wife. Tight lines!
So right about those bridges, ya really have to wrench them away, it’s so disappointing if that fish turns the corner on concrete covered with jagged shells.
I hear you on that one. This video has some of those moments in it: ua-cam.com/video/tiIfiyTmncE/v-deo.html When you watch it, ever since that day I've started using eight to ten foot long 80 lb leader to catch those fish.
Very informative video. Got some questions and maybe you can use as a follow up video next time it is raining. 1. How do you take care of your reels (and other equipment) after a trip out. How often do you strip your reels down, clean and relube? 2. Have you considered getting an extra spool for your reels to spoil with lighter or heavier line than you normally use? 3. I like that your 2500 was spoiled with big game mono. What brand do you use for your leaders? Are some better than others. 4. Would you replace or “upgrade” any of your reels or rods? Would you get/need an 8000 set up? Thanks again!
Excellent questions, thanks for asking. 1. I usually just rinse the reels off with fresh water. I don't spray them hard with a hose, just let mild running water flow over them. I will put some drops of oil on some of the external parts about once a month, oil the drag washers on the Penn Pursuits about every three months and only open the gear box if the reel feels like it's starting to run slightly rough of worse. 2. I've thought about it but for the area I fish the lines I'm using seem to be working fine. 3. I buy brand name large spools of mono for leader line. I just purchase Triline or Ande in about 200 yard spools for 10-$15 dollars in 50, 60 and 80lb test. The lighter lines I'll purchase the really cheep mono at Walmart less than $2 for 20 and 30lb test. 4. Yes absolutely. I want to put an 8000 on my eight foot long Snook Master rod next. There's a place where I jig fish that requires very long casts. I'd like to use 50 lb. braid all the time for the main line. The 8000 spool would help make casting easier. Also, that's where I caught the Goliath Grouper, apparently there are some big fish there occasionally.
so i have the in-between reel aka 5000 size reel and I hope I can use it for everything that the 4000 can and almost everything the 6000 can and 45lb braid 185 yards
First, love the channel. Learning a lot since I moved from GA and saltwater fishing. With that said, my senior dad is old fashioned and used to using a Spincast rod. I found the KastKing reel which seems to be the best Spincast for the money. What about putting the big game 12 pound mono for fishing the marinas and some piers. You thing it would hold up for him or should I try and work him into learning a spinning reel?
Jc you rock brother. Love your channel, I love how informative you are, just ask around great stuff man. Thanks bud. Been a subscriber for some time now.
Oh I know all about snook sleep deprivation. It should be a medical term...SSD lol. I fish with Penn reels but no doubt the BG is the best reel available for around $100. Nice vid, thx..
Thanks for watching and commenting. Please let me know what you purchase. Here's my favorite reel that's reasonably priced: Penn Pursuit 2 6000 Reel amzn.to/2yxwfju
Nice video, very informative. I was wondering what rod to set up with my Shimano 4000FC, you convinced me with the Ugly Stik Elite 7foot M/H. Nice setup.
Hey JC great video. I have a Penn Fierce II 3000 that I have on a 6'6" medium Ugly Stik GX2. I used it down at Gulf Shores last summer for the first time when my wife and I were down there for a family reunion. I watched a bunch of youtube videos and read a bunch of articles and alot of them said the 3000 size reel was a good all around size reel for inshore fishing. I have it spooled with 20 lb Power Pro braid, and I tied on a Pompano rig that a guide I hired for a beach fishing session gave to me. Caught alot of ladyfish, pinfish, and whiting with it. It handled them all like a champ. After using it for a while I began thinking that I could have caught everything on a smaller, 2000 or 2500 size reel with no problem. I am thinking of going to a longer rod with the Penn reel, between 7 and 7 1/2 foot or so. Can you make a recommendation for a good rod in the price range of the ones you have there? Since I have the 3000 size reel, if I want to go larger should I look at a 5000 size spinning reel instead? How much of a difference in size is there between a 3000 and a 4000 size spinning reel? Thanks, and tight lines!
Thanks for commenting Dee. It's been a while since making this video, but I believe I covered the topic well. You might consider visiting a local "tackle" store who has a lot of fishing rod and reel choices and discussing these things with an experienced person in the area you will be fishing. I always like to get a good "hands on" feeling for the rods I purchase. Generally the longer the rod the further you will be able to cast. I own four Ugly Stiks and have no complaints. Thanks for watching.
New subscriber and really appreciating your videos. I'm a highly experiences fresh water fisherman who is now getting into salt water fishing. Mainly from piers for now. What kind of rod/reel combo would you suggest for pier fishing?
@@RadReelingFishing thanks for the reply and I love your videos very down to earth and informative. Keep up the great work and tight lines brorher......
If you are strictly surf fishing then go with the 5000 long cast for sure. I find that the 4000 is the most versatile for a lot of different types of fishing. When you step it up the reels start getting heavier and aren't practical to use in situations where you will be doing a lot of casting while fishing with lures...Thanks for watching
Great info on your videos ..man we would love to fish with you one day me and Mike from dailey life fishing , fish together every weekend and always talk about fishing with you one day ..
I bought a Penn pursuit 3 20lb braid it's on a 6.6 med ugly stick gx2 ..will it be good freshwater bass and catfishing ? also iv saw some comments on Amazon about the braid cutting into the stainless eyelets on the ugly sticks have u had that happen any ??
Hey JC didn't see you mention line color. If you didn't know Bass Pro has Power pro line on sale 50% off right now so I was thinking of getting some yellow hi vis color line but I was wondering if that would make a difference in if the fish will bite or not.
Sorry for the late reply. Ever since I started fishing with braid I've used this line amzn.to/2IX35R4 I honestly don't know anything about different types of braided fishing line.
For starters the rod I would recommend is an Ugly Stik Elite. It’s cheap and you can pick it up at your local Walmart there and then. The length definitely would be 7’ and up due to you pier fishing and you wanting to get that long cast. Longer rod helps you get that long cast. Lastly the action I recommend would be a medium light. There very light rods and a 3000 size reel will complement the weight so you have good control. My suggestion
Question: ugly stick 7ft big water has line weight 20-40 lb, can I use 50-60lb braided main line on it? Or it has to be between 20-40 lb? You were using 50-60lb braided main line in this video
Thanks for watching. Contact Pure Fishing here: www.purefishing.com/contact-us to get the correct answer. I've used 50 lb braid on mine with no problem. The rod is incredible. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/q32CDWtVai8/v-deo.html
Which reel would you recommend for large salmon fishing (from pier) which involves a lot of cast-retrieve and bobbing the lure ? I think that hands will hurt if I use these reels with big handles.
And yes inshore fishing your not usually into 15 lb plus fish so 10/15 braid is plenty Then use 15/17/20 as a leader depending on the teeth of fish Everything in the gulf has teeth 12 to 30 leader
Don't know to much about spinning gear but I'm in japan fishing 40 - 50 lb. Yellowfin, I just bought my daughter and husband the penn battle 2 , 6000 reels and should I just run straight 25 lb. Ande monofilament or should I put a 150 yards of braid backing on them, I don't want them to get spooled or do you think the 210 yards of the 25lb mono will do the job ? Thanks, jim, ex-Red Rooster 3 cook out of San Diego 😀
Just bought pursuit III 4000 reel. Which ugly stick should I get? And line? Mostly I will be fishing from the beach/shore break south Florida. Thank you!!
im going to buy a pen pursuit 4 8000 with a 7,6 inch rod 60lb line . is that a good set up for all around fishing ? its my first time really getting i to saltwater fishing .
Looking for a MH 7’ rod for my penn 4000 reel. Ugly elite is one of the 5 im considering. Ever used the hurricane calico jack? I know you have used the ugly inshore but I don’t want 7’6”
I got a Penn Spinfisher 7500 with 50lb braid on a 12ft surf rod , but I’m about to put the reel on a Penn Rampage 6ft rod for off shore fishing, the reel is unstoppable for sure, I have it on the surf rod for inshore fishing from the beach
Hi. Great video and information. I bought a Penn Pursuit 5000 today and did my reserach, but having second thoughts regarding if this is too much reel for redfish and trout on the Texas Gulf flats. I bought the 5000 because alot of videos recommend a 20lb mono line and this 5000 reel will allow the 20lb mono. Any thoughts?
I think a 4000 is a great all around reel size. I started out with 20 lb braid, but have since dropped to 15 lb to get more casting distance. A longer rods help with casting distance. I just purchased some 10 lb braid to put on one of my 4000 to get even more casting distance. It seems like the lighter the line is and the longer the rod the more effortless the cast is. I watched a video that 30 Miles Out made a while ago and he was saying that the 3000 was a good all around sized reel. I love my 4000s for flats fishing.
@@RadReelingFishingGreat, thanks! So, can I put 20lb line on a reel that indicates it's not made to be used with 20lb? Meaning, if the reel recommendation is 12-15lb mono, then is putting 20lb on a bad idea or totall ok-- as long as I'm OK with less of the 20lb line that will be on the spool?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, twenty pound braid is like 10 lb mono or less. Reel companies usually have a braid diameter size somewhere, maybe on their website. Check out this chart: www.thehulltruth.com/sportfishing-charters-forum/267001-chart-diameters-braid-vs-mono-vs-lb-test.html
New sub here i just traded a penn 115 for a penn fierce II 8000 reel on a 12ft jarvis rod but i think i dont want it on a 12 ft rod since this more for a boat set up what would you recommend on rod size on a 8000 reel
Thanks for commenting. The largest reel I have is a 7500 long cast reel. The rod length and action always depend on where and what I'm fishing for. If I'm fishing in tight structure, I use a 7' medium heavy Big Water Ugly Stik. If I'm casting long distances I have two medium heavy 8' rods I use.
Hi . Thank you . Im planning to buy Okuma Nomad Inshore Graphite Travel Rod- NTI-C-703M-MH What size reel i shouldvuse with it please. Penn 1481260 Spinfisher VI Spinning Saltwater Reel, 6500 Reel Size, 6.2: 1 Gear Ratio is it ok ? ..
new fisherman in jersey plan to fish of the pier in the bay or ocean newar beach maybe bluefish they fight hard is 4000 enough what size line please help I wanna be able to cast 6 is too big i'm thinking 4k or 5?
If you are fishing all of those places different sized reels will be required. I covered my opinions in the video very well on reel sizes. Here's a link to a Jersey UA-camr, maybe you can find some insight from his channel. ua-cam.com/video/OhpvFvOQiD8/v-deo.html
So far l have the same reel n have caught pretty good size reds n black drums n large cat fish. Not sure what l hooked the other nite as my friend had only put 15lb test line on and l got it in close he thinks it was a monster snoock or moster tarpon had no problems with the fish but cant stand due to my back.
It depends on what you are fishing for and where you are fishing...Here's a good video about rod selection in relation to casting ua-cam.com/video/MeUO9BlJ44A/v-deo.html
In my area I'd be using the 4000 reel with the seven foot rod for casting lures. Sometimes I take the 2500 BG for catching whiting. I don't usually fish with really heavy weights when surf fishing. Perhaps someone will invite me soon to catch some pompano then I might need to go heavier. Some people who beach fish use really heavy weights. The seven foot Elite Ugly Stik wouldn't be hefty enough to throw a two ounce weight.
4 L, it depends on what I'm fishing for. Either 20, 25 or 30 pound test leader. I like 15 or 20 pound braid. The braid is linked in the description area.
@rad reel fishing . I have a penn spinfisher 3500 with 15lb braid, 5500 with 25lb braid and 7500 with 40lb braid. But no rods yet. Do you have any suggestions that won’t break the bank ?
Most of the rods I fish with are Ugly Stiks. They are reasonably prices, readily available at Walmart and other popular sporting goods suppliers. They come with an excellent warranty. Thanks for watching.
Long rods and light line will get you long casts. Spend a little extra if you really want to get some extra distance and get a Penn Spinfisher "Longcast" model. Still a ten foot long surf rod and light line will get long distances.
Perhaps a version of the Big Water series amzn.to/37jwzkL (paid link) . Rod length depends on how far you will be casting or if you will be fishing straight down from a boat or pier.
Usually what happens is after fishing for a while I've had to cut off line multiple times because of tangles or lost line due to getting broke off, the spool gets low so I change the line. Thanks for watching.
I like how you keep your equipment affordable. It's good to see someone catch big fish without using a the most expensive reel Penn, Shimano, or Daiwa is selling.

Thanks for your awesome advice! Stay Humble, as always!!!!
Hi jc great video as usual thanks for your time and help 🐟

I prefer a 7 1/2 foot rod and a 4000 size reel for whiting because I’ve hooked many reds while doing it

New subscriber and really appreciating your videos. I'm a highly experiences fresh water fisherman who is now getting into salt water fishing. Mainly from piers for now. What kind of rod/reel combo would you suggest for pier fishing?
that depends on what you're targeting.
Good info, keep it going buddy!
Thank for excellent information, appreciate time a video... you have a new subscriber... Thanks
thanks for the video. Fish don't care when it rains, they're already wet!
Are you using the braid on you description link on your rods????? Keep up the great videos 👍👍👍👍👍
yes
@@RadReelingFishing thanks for the reply and I love your videos very down to earth and informative. Keep up the great work and tight lines brorher......
Hi, would you recommend the 5000 for surf fishing (long cast) or the 4000 adequate? cheers
@@RadReelingFishing exactly the answer i am looking for, appreciate the help. thank you.
Enjoyed the video as usual....can I ask a quick question? Do the penn pursuits have any flex when you hook into something big?
I've got some very big fish and I've never had one fail me.
Great info on your videos ..man we would love to fish with you one day me and Mike from dailey life fishing , fish together every weekend and always talk about fishing with you one day ..
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I'm sure we will make that happen eventually.
great video appreciate all the content!
Tips for buying use fishing rod and spinning reel
I have a Ugly 6,6 MH which size reel should i put on it 5000, 6000 I think is a little too big maybe like 40, 50 lb Braid on the 5000?
I use bigger reels to cast father, fish deeper and to catch bigger fish with.
@@RadReelingFishing really so what reel size would match the rod
How do you detach your mind from work while fishing?
What size would you recommend on a 3000s size real off the pier?
Sorry for the late response. I'm not a Salmon fisherman.
What do you do for work? You have a lot of time to fish lol
Hii..
Spinfisher vi 8500 or standard 9500 is better to buy plz reply.
15 pound line on 4000 reel in saltwater ? Whattttttt I’ll try but if it breaks I’m changing lines
15 lb braid not mono his light he used 12 mono the other 2 are w braid
And yes inshore fishing your not usually into 15 lb plus fish so 10/15 braid is plenty Then use 15/17/20 as a leader depending on the teeth of fish Everything in the gulf has teeth 12 to 30 leader
Good video, thanks.
Thanks for watching. I'm not a tuna fisherman and have no ideas how they rig for them. Thanks for asking.
Just bought pursuit III 4000 reel. Which ugly stick should I get? And line?
Mostly I will be fishing from the beach/shore break south Florida.
Thank you!!
Hey whats up man, how are you now? So what rod and line did you get for yourself?
awesome....keeping it simple..!!!
RIGHT
what size of jigging rod you recomend on my 9000 spinning reel.please rply my coment coz im planing to buy jigging rod for my 9000 spinning reel
6 ft.
Longer rods cast further.
im going to buy a pen pursuit 4 8000 with a 7,6 inch rod 60lb line . is that a good set up for all around fishing ? its my first time really getting i to saltwater fishing .
What brand of braid are you using for your Penn 4000? I know that Ashconfish Braid was mentioned.

Looking for a MH 7’ rod for my penn 4000 reel. Ugly elite is one of the 5 im considering. Ever used the hurricane calico jack? I know you have used the ugly inshore but I don’t want 7’6”
I like the GX2 amzn.to/2fjI3yn the best out of the Elite, Inshore Select and GX2. I've never used a Calico Jack.
I use a Rhino I love it
Would the 4000 be suitable on a 12ft rod for surf casting? Thanks. Great video
The bigger the reel the further you will cast. A 4000 sounds small to me.
I think you would be okay
Hi . Thank you .
Im planning to buy Okuma Nomad Inshore Graphite Travel Rod- NTI-C-703M-MH
What size reel i shouldvuse with it please.
Penn 1481260 Spinfisher VI Spinning Saltwater Reel, 6500 Reel Size, 6.2: 1 Gear Ratio is it ok ?

new fisherman in jersey plan to fish of the pier in the bay or ocean newar beach maybe bluefish they fight hard is 4000 enough what size line please help I wanna be able to cast 6 is too big i'm thinking 4k or 5?
If you are fishing all of those places different sized reels will be required. I covered my opinions in the video very well on reel sizes. Here's a link to a Jersey UA-camr, maybe you can find some insight from his channel. ua-cam.com/video/OhpvFvOQiD8/v-deo.html
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Awesome stuff dude
Thanks for the tips
Whats the pursuit III 8000 good for as l have the 6000.
Biggggg Fish.
Good information thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed the video. You are welcome.
The link to the cheap&good braid doesn’t work. Any other recommendations?
Thanks, I fixed it this morning!
Just curious. Why don't you use a 8000 size reel?
I have two 7500 reels I use. I used one in this video: ua-cam.com/video/J1SGiN7Xm6s/v-deo.htmlsi=Rziu_zKdXjFafZQc
Looking for a rod to pair with a Penn Fierce 2 8000 reel.
It depends on what you are fishing for and where you are fishing...Here's a good video about rod selection in relation to casting ua-cam.com/video/MeUO9BlJ44A/v-deo.html
When you do get out surf fishing, what is your rod of preference?
In my area I'd be using the 4000 reel with the seven foot rod for casting lures. Sometimes I take the 2500 BG for catching whiting. I don't usually fish with really heavy weights when surf fishing. Perhaps someone will invite me soon to catch some pompano then I might need to go heavier. Some people who beach fish use really heavy weights. The seven foot Elite Ugly Stik wouldn't be hefty enough to throw a two ounce weight.
For your 4k size reel, what size leader do you use and what type of line?
4 L, it depends on what I'm fishing for. Either 20, 25 or 30 pound test leader. I like 15 or 20 pound braid. The braid is linked in the description area.
what size do you think would be best for sea trout and redfish?
4000
@@RadReelingFishing thanks so much!
Which Rod did you end up pairing the 7500 with? 👍
what size reel should i put on a 10 foot medium heavy? for shore fishing?
The larger the reel the farther you will be able to cast.
@@RadReelingFishing thank you!
Is the penn pursuit 3 4000 a good option for surf casting specially that i want a long distance casting
Long rods and light line will get you long casts. Spend a little extra if you really want to get some extra distance and get a Penn Spinfisher "Longcast" model. Still a ten foot long surf rod and light line will get long distances.
@@RadReelingFishing thnx for the information, can you please advise which type of line is better (braided line, fluorocarbon or dacron). Thnx again
Would a 4000 size reel be good for pier fishing at the gulf? I am planning on going to Galveston Tx soon.
That depends on how big the fish are that you're gonna be targeting
@@RadReelingFishing well it’s the gulf so it could something as small as whiting to as big as bull reds.
Is that case, I always have two different size rod and reel's. 4000 for Wedding and a 6000 or 7500 for bull reds.
Would a 5000 size spinning reel be good with a 8’ surf rod? Or a 6000?
The larger the reel the bigger the spool that holds the line, so you'll get more distance on your casts with a larger reel.
Rad Reeling Fishing okay thanks.
What Ugly Stik rod size should I use with my Penn Battle ll 8000?
Perhaps a version of the Big Water series amzn.to/37jwzkL (paid link) . Rod length depends on how far you will be casting or if you will be fishing straight down from a boat or pier.
How long do you keep the braided line on before you replace it when using on saltwater? I have the same setup Penn 4000 like you have.
Usually what happens is after fishing for a while I've had to cut off line multiple times because of tangles or lost line due to getting broke off, the spool gets low so I change the line. Thanks for watching.
It sometimes bothers me to waste that last good almost unused line. Would you ever just tie on to it and fill your spool from there?
@@cldtt It is usually not a good idea because it turns into the weakest point on your set up and the knot also makes it hard to manage.
Do you think a 3000 size reel would work on an 8 foot rod
YES

15 lb fish and up....
