I was just here for the rake review, absolutely incredible durability and reliability, the rake simply refused to quit. The rake could collect millions of leaves with no malfunction, I’m sure it would still punch up and collect even larger yard waste like sticks and dog shit and still maintain function. What was sig there for.
That gun looks like it was taken straight out of halo. I absolutely love it. The main reason I love it is because you can give it to a SAW gunner in a fireteam and have not only more firepower but also someone that can provide covering fire, take out vehicles, punch through cover, and even take out enemies at longer ranges. I think it’s more useful than the M240 for infantry because of its weight which is heavier than the M338 which allows SAW gunners to fire while they walk, meaning they can control their surroundings much more effectively so that not only the gunner but the other soldiers in that fireteam. In my opinion, the military should take it! If they use it right, they can have a lot of roles that they don’t have filled replaced by the SAW gunners.
Can we just put that gun in Halo already. I'm craving to see John 117 use it as his regular assault rifle. Perfect size and power for a Spartan. Absolutely savage!

The walk and shoot was hilarious, watching John twist and slow down from the recoil. Then Micah completely glued in place then as soon as he stops shooting, he springs forwards 😆
I know folks rag on Sig for being expensive pieces of hardware, but damn, the sheer amount of thought an innovation that seem to have gone into this whole project is astonishing and I have a lot of respect for their techs for really coming up with creative design elements and workarounds to modern combat gunner issues. It’s almost as astonishing as seeing John walking that 338.
I have a sig P320 the full size model ( cost me 500 dollars a few years back ) the first strike fire pistol I ever owned. People have given me grief over it at a local outdoor range where armalite style rifles are prominent.and for some reason the majority of pistols seen are the high end semiautomatics. Now my 320 has traditional iron sights. I was shooting at 10 and 25 yards. Offhand switching between my left and right hand some guys new to shooting (range master was constantly checking for safety concerns). had tricked out 9mm shooting at bowling pins set a 100 yards. At a break I asked how they were doing. They were not hitting anything. I asked if I could shoot at their bowling pins. Okay they said. So I got my 320 after the break and using 115 grain Winchester from a range pack. I proceed after one test shot to hit the bowling pins with 3 aimed shots but using the pole supporting the awning as a support. The range master chuckle. We had known each other for years. Both of use cut our teeth on the 1911A1 which we both shot expert with in the military. I like Sigs, Colts and for some reason taurus revolvers.
I bought an Audi 5000 turbo back when. Very nice engineering and lots of neat little perks. But so COMPLICATED and finicky that it cost me more in repairs and soul searching than it was worth. VERY nice when it DID function though.
The fact that John was able to walk and rip that 338 was damn near orgasmic. He made that look easy and everyone quickly learned it was only the fact that he's a beast. I hope our army picks this baby up and we'll have a new generation of Rambo. I hate to admit it but I've been simping so hard for sig these last few years. (Edit: typos from fat finger phone posts)
The 338 projectile is indeed magical. I've hunted with the 338 Federal (308 Win necked up to a 338) for years and nothing hits harder with less meat destruction. Game rarely takes a single step before dropping. Very versatile, accurate and capable projectile. Amazing weapon system. Great video as always.
SIGs contribution to the next gen weaponry, in the belt fed category especially, is admirable to say the least. It's really cool to see them make the leaps they've been making.
@@Carbidestruck I do wonder if there are 5.56 load/projectile combinations that will go through level 4 plates at 300 meter-ish combat ranges? I would imagine tungsten projectiles might do the trick without returning to using battle rifles.
@@zchen27 M855A1 Is really squeezing the limits out of the platform. And it's tearing up barrels lifespan. You need the velocity and the mass. I think the whole goal is to step well beyond what body armor will achieve for quite some time. Instead of a small incremental upgrade that can be defeated relatively easily. Remember Level IV is rated up to 30-06 AP, level threats. Getting 5.56 to that is a fools errand.
@@zchen27 I guess the purpose of the SIG is to offer overmatch capability, i.e 5.56 tungsten rounds can pen lvl 4 plates at typical combat distance, but the SIG is capable of penetrating future body armour developments. Furthermore the optic combined with the rifle should offer more range, increasing survivability, which is a serious priority. The question is wheter the 6.8 actually offers AP capability and wheter the increased engagement range offered by the optic materializes in actual combat.
As a former machine gunner I would love to get this on a sustained fire kit. Damn you would have some punch and reach. Never thought of 338 in a mg before but when you look at what that round can do and the light weight of the platform it is a brilliant idea. 7.62 was deadly in urban areas, damn 338 would pound through walls like nothing was there. Just thinking about last time I provided covering fire with a mag58, two of these on tripods would be freaking devastating. 50 cal is great but the 126 lbs making it totally useless in the mountains or rough terrain in a dismounted role. Mg338 checks a lot boxes.
I was at Sig HQ last weekend and got to put hands on the M338 and it really is a badass weapon. The 240B will always have a place in my heart, but this thing has so many quality of life changes I didn't know I would have wanted back in the day as a machine gunner!
Just got rid of my first bucket list rifle, the M82A1, now I gotta get me one of these. Great video. Time to do some research as far as the Norma compared to the Lapua 338. Thanks for all this.
While the M7 (M5) doesn't appear to improve a lot over the M4 with the exception of single round stopping power (which to be fair, was the aim for SIG and the military), the M250 and M338 are massive improvements over the existing service machine guns, especially the M338 being that intermediate between the now M250 and the M2. Seeing it rip through that ballistics dummy was both impressive and low key horrifying
@@deadarashi6462 Colt released the M5 back in 2017, which was before the XM5 was adopted. Prior to that, the XM5 was simply Sig’s entry in the NGSW program (Didn’t have a numerical designation).
i mean yeah .50 cal is a literal anti-material round so i would like to see how it could do that. i’m sure that the military would love to put it between 7.62 and .50 like they touched on at the beginning of the video, but definitely not replacing it at all
I don't think the .50 will be replaced any time soon in the anti-material role, even if they do replace it Im sure they gonna hand that down to another division that needs it for its specific use, like how some special forces groups still use the m1911 or a 357 magnum
I dont think itll have any issues. most likely going to perform closer to a lapua. which will chew through them as well. and im sure the military will be running some hardcore ammo through those.
I think anyone who has had to carry anything having to do with the 50 cal would appreciate this lol. That said I don’t think it’ll fully replace the .50 BMG
My Uncle Hank (Sgt. Henry Abbott USMC, 1st Marines, Silver Star, Purple Heart) had a curly stache like that. He was a Marine who fought on Guadalcanal and across the pacific. Great guy, soft spoken, big positive influence in my life. He loved to fish and taught me how. We spent hours and hours fishing and chatting. He was instrumental in my decision to serve. There are a couple old news film clips and a picture out there from Guadalcanal where my Uncle Hank is clearly visible. He looked the same but much younger and clearly starving from the lack of food and really really tired. He has been gone about ten years now....still miss him. Keep rockin that curly stache!

As an owner & shooter of a weapon chambered in 338 lapua i can say yes,it is an incredible round and in an anti-personel role and exactly what bill designed the round for..." eliminating human targets at extreme distances " but in an anti material role the mass of the 50cal rounds projectile is more suitable
A weapon in 338LM to supplement the existing .30-caliber (or 6.8x51) GPMGs on the lighter end and the Big Ma Deuce 50-caliber HBMG on the upper end is a fine idea. The army already classes its precision/sniping rifles in that manner - "light" is anything up to and including .308; "intermediate" being anything between .308 and 50BMG such as 338LM or 300NM or 300WM; and "heavy" being the 50-cal or larger. The 250-grain slug from a 338LM weighs only one-third as much as the 750-grain round from a big 50, and sometimes throw-weight makes a difference. As an anti-material weapon, the 50BMG round is a heavy hitter; at 4000 yards, it still packs more than 1,000 lb-ft. of kinetic energy. Those are big shoes to fill for the 338. Too big, as a matter of fact.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 Can't fill the same shoes, but is a hell of a tool to have when those shoes are going to be hard to wear in a situation anyway. "Within 1500" is quite an upgrade from "Within 800" I'd say filling that gap is rather nice
True but maneuver tactics and and rapid changes of fields of fire can now be achieved like never before. Will it stop a car? Yes. Will it punch through walls? Yes. So effectively you get less punch but 100x mobility.
@@VladHTX - The best move is to keep the 50BMG and move the 338LM into service alongside it. Valid roles/jobs for both weapons and cartridges. That's my two cents worth, anyway...

@Chemistry of Questionable Quality ah ok fair enough, I guess it's similar to how the Ford Focus and Escort etc were designed and built by Ford Europe.

Thank God Charlie is back. I was worried he had accidentally stabbed himself trying to fix his rake. Or gotten arrested for loitering near a school just a little too long.
So true story here, I was a first yr Pvt. in a rifle company (infantry) and I was a C9 LMG gunner (C9 = FN Minimi or SAW for you non-Canadians) and we get out into the training area, doing this big assault on a mocked up village, and I'm in a 3-gun fire base with two other LMG's and we're providing fire support for the lead sections of the platoon going in, and we are supposed to just be pumping rounds down range, and I get a few bursts and my gun stops, so I go through my stoppage drill, get another burst down range, gun stops. This happens 3-4 times, and the Sgt. who was in charge of us was just losing his mind on me in the background, but I know I'm doing my drills correctly, so I yell back that there's something wrong with the gun.. turns out the safety had somehow come loose and wouldn't stay locked off, and, since I am a left-handed shooter, when I put the weapon to my shoulder, there was just enough of a tilt on it that the safety would slide from the off to on position as I was firing. So we solved the problem by using a piece of gun tape to hold the safety in the off position, and I resumed firing without any further stoppages lol. After that phase of the exercise I passed the gun off to one of our weapons tech's, but not before everyone had a good laugh at my expense, passing the (unloaded and cleared) gun around for everyone to have a look. 22 yrs ago, and I can still remember in vivid detail the frustration of not being able to clear those stoppages and having my Sgt. yelling and swearing at me in the background lol. Now that story time is over, I do have a question, the video mentioned that it could be charged from either the left or right side depending on the shooter, so I wanted to ask, and maybe someone with some more up to date experience can chime in, but as a left-handed shooter, I didn't really have a choice when it came to a lot of the support weapons I trained on, I am ambidextrous with my hands, but for shooting I am left-eye dominant, so I have to shoot rifles and machine guns from my left shoulder - pistols I can shoot either hand for some reason *Note I said I could shoot either hand, I didn't say how well! But I had some good instructors on my basic course, and on my machine gunners course, and I was no slower than average operating light, general purpose and heavy machine guns as a lefty, but I never had any other option, so I am curious how much difference it makes? I think with all the training and experience on deployments etc. I had over my career I think if charging had become an option on the other side it might have actually been more difficult for me to re-learn everything. Curious if anyone can comment on that. The dirty Canadian says sorry for the long comment haha
I kinda agree that it would be hard to relearn, I have been shooting and practicing marksmanship most of my life as a left handed shooter(right handed but my left arm is more flexible so I shoot leftie.) I couldn't that imagine changing the safety position. My father and girlfriend are both also left handed shooters and also agree with your point about the safety. It ain't science but it seems to be a majority of left handed shooters are just used to right handed safety placement.
Fellow dirty Canadian mg gunner here. I feel if the feed mechanism and charging handle were reversed they would benefit natural lefties. It would require training to be effective, no different than with the normal setup. I’m no expert, just a dumb ex-grunt. During work up training in ‘05 a fellow mger hand the handle come off his c9 while doing live pairs. He had to hold on for dear life in the mud till the belt ran out while his fire team partner assaulted the trench. Gen 1’s had weak sears combined with those weak retaining pins. Sounds like sig made an improvement in that aspect at least
Area target at 2000M is all I think anyone's ever asked of the M2, combine this with a T&E and Tripod that weighs no more than a service rifle and I think the grunts will be happy with this
Coming from an old UH-1 pilot, based on range and hit power, the M338 looks to be a much better door gun than the M60. I hope the guys at TF 160 are testing the M338 right now.
Been saying for many years that .338 should have been the round that a new platform was based on back when the M240 replaced the M60. Glad to see it's being taken seriously.
@@shepleonard8695 .338 win mag was out before then. Also there were a host of 8.6mm cartridges in existence already that could have been modified or used already for machine gun use
@@John-wk2fd True, but they all lacked real world ballistics. It wasn't until .338 Lapua and .338 Norma that the ballistics became with the buffer from .308 and the 50 within the military. The military is binding itself within the logistics of all the new rounds that no one else is using on top of making weapon load heavier across the board. Yes the M338 is lighter, but ehe XM5 weighs 8.38 pounds, or 9.84 pounds with the suppressor, compared to the 6.34-pound M4. That new rifle will also use 20-round magazines, smaller than the 30-round magazines troops currently use. A soldier's basic combat load will be seven of those 20-round magazines, a total of 140 rounds, weighing 9.8 pounds altogether. The M4's combat load, also seven magazines for a total of 210 rounds, is 7.4 pounds. In total, a rifleman with the XM5 will carry roughly four pounds more than today's M4 rifleman. We'll just have to wait and see.
@Shep Leonard the .338 Lapua Mag was invented in 1989. While a bit different than the Norma, the Lapua is still arguably "also" in the middle between 7.62 and .50 BMG. I should have specified more in my initial post regarding the .338 caliber in general, and it's subsequent variants, not just the Norma. You do raise a good point though about practical loadouts, where weight of the .338 will trump capacity. And of course, cost will certainly be a factor as well, although with government contracts that difference would probably get lost in the muck.
240 was already in service as a coax and quite functional without having to reinvent the wheel at 5$ a round ffs. So much for extensive time at the range at that price.
I remember when that round was being developed. My grandpa's good friend jimmy sloan created that cartridge. One of the smartest guys i have ever met. So awesome to se his round finally getting its place in history!
It's not an attempt at replacing it. It's to allow troops that go places where it isn't feasible to lug around M2's to still have long range suppressive capability.
@@StormBringareyeah 💯 key word feasible. Some places especially on the attack a tri pod mounted m2 is more of a hindrance. In the defensive and vehicle mounted it really can't be replaced.
@@ah64dbeast37 The only possible replacement for those applications would be another 50 cal MG, and unless one can be found that has some serious improvements over the M2 that's pretty much pointless.
As someone who was in NSW Special Boat Unit - 24, and used boat mounted weapons, M - 60 machine gun, M - 4 50 Cal , Mk - 19 grenade launcher and others, the ability to load from both sides on a dual mount is a great development. And medium Range weapons are a definite advantage in Combat and 50 Cal Machine guns are just way too bulky and heavy for Infantry to carry. So this weapon from SIG, looks really promising and I hope the U.S. Army is smart enough to use it. Hopefully the U.S. Navy will want a version that meets it's needs too.
You nailed it. .50 weapon may be more powerful than .338 however try carrying one for three weeks, I would go for .338 for the lighter weapon, as long as the army don’t decide to make up the difference by carrying an extra 200 rounds!?

Sig have been winning military and police contracts galore recently. But this thing looks great.
I bought an Audi 5000 turbo back when. Very nice engineering and lots of neat little perks. But so COMPLICATED and finicky that it cost me more in repairs and soul searching than it was worth. VERY nice when it DID function though.
@@Darkpara1 didn't the NSGW get dropped by the army?
its not even for that its because half of the cool stuff they sell we will never be able to get ever.
Especially in reducing weight!
@Dick Izzinya ”But muh ability to pen chinese body armour!”
Fair point, somehow I was only thinking about the M250.

I don't think the .50 will be replaced any time soon in the anti-material role, even if they do replace it Im sure they gonna hand that down to another division that needs it for its specific use, like how some special forces groups still use the m1911 or a 357 magnum
Considering 7.62 will punch into engine block already, I am gonna go with "It'll do"

Too big, as a matter of fact.
.50 can also carry a payload in a way that .338 just can't
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 Can't fill the same shoes, but is a hell of a tool to have when those shoes are going to be hard to wear in a situation anyway.
"Within 1500" is quite an upgrade from "Within 800"

True but maneuver tactics and and rapid changes of fields of fire can now be achieved like never before. Will it stop a car? Yes. Will it punch through walls? Yes. So effectively you get less punch but 100x mobility.

As someone who was in NSW Special Boat Unit - 24, and used boat mounted weapons, M - 60 machine gun, M - 4 50 Cal , Mk - 19 grenade launcher and others, the ability to load from both sides on a dual mount is a great development.
