    I remember getting issued a brand spanking new M107 and M24 right before a deployment to Iraq, but the M107 had the standard Barrett muzzle brake, and no suppressor. During a long-range training session with the M107, S-4 had given me way more ammo than requested, and I had to fire it all during that session. Even though the recoil was very mild, the concussion from all the repeated muzzle blasts gave me a nose bleed and a major headache, even though I was wearing earplugs and Sordins. At the end of the day my head felt like I had taken a beating. While obviously a suppressor on a .50 helps conceal the shooter's location from the enemy, in this case, it also protects the shooter himself from the concussive effects of the standard muzzle brake.

  • @MTMILITIAMAN7.62
    @MTMILITIAMAN7.62 2 роки тому +466

    The fact that Barrett was able to modify the M82 so that it could be suppressed is also amazing. Being short recoil operated, the amount of mass you attach to the barrel directly affects the rifle's ability to function. So whatever voodoo space magic Ronnie had to do to make that even possible is pretty fucking bad ass.

    • @Horseshoecrabwarrior
      @Horseshoecrabwarrior 2 роки тому +16

      Probably some wizardry with the brake. With the brake covered, the motion of the barrel under recoil might be different

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 Рік тому +6

      This also used to be a problem with handguns like the M1911, or that use the Browning tilting barrel design.
      Since the slide is unlocked by the barrels movement, the added weight of the suppressor would often cause jams and feeding issues.
      This has mostly been solved by now, either with lighter suppressors, or by having a spring loaded attachment point that allows the barrel to jolt back and tip without moving the whole mass of the suppressor, just the spacer which then retracts with the spring.

Thanks for guiding me to SDI, you may not need to be certified to be a gunsmith but it makes all the difference in knowledge. Its like comparing the difference in the work of cheap workers outside of home depot vs a certified contractor. The signature of the work speaks for itself. I talk about guns so much nowadays and people just are shocked with the things I tell them about what I learned. Yet still, people will always talk down on SDI for “not teaching shit” but then you ask “okay, whats fire lapping?” and they pull their phone out to google it. @@arothewanderer9451 there's a key word that people miss about SDI training. If you want to learn the basics of gunsmithing and maybe have a GI bill to burn up, it's the perfect way to go. If you think you are going to graduate school and compete with Doug Turnbull, you will be disappointed. It's also what you put into it. There is so much involved with gunsmithing that you will quickly realize that you might want to pick a niche in the industry and stick to it. It's not particularly hard, but some of the projects take time to set. So I always jump on it as soon as possible. You can sometimes kinda work ahead a bit, but don't go too far with that.

    A potential cool video idea (if you haven't already done this) could be to test the long-range performance of various "sniper" rounds. Test different metrics and see the tradeoffs. I know you could probably find much of that information online, but a video of it could still be interesting and fun to watch.
    Personally, I'd like to see how 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, 300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, 50 BMG, .270 Win, and other rounds actually perform in a test. Also you could go into detail of the tradeoffs of availability, round weight, etc. Just an idea. Might not be a good one, but just my two cents.
