- A 50 BMG produces an enormous amount of energy per trigger pull. Can you silence the immense amount of powder being put out by such a weapon? How effective can this possibly be? Today the Garand Thumb Science team investigates.

Apparently jay and mr Reece have confirmed it’s actually not terrible ears off with a CGS keres
Fun fact, if you don't wear any earpro and fire a .50cal, it will be completely silent for you
Coach said it’s ok for your ears to bleed
Exactly right. The problem is self-correcting
(High pitched ringing!) "WHAT DID HE SAY?.....HUH?.....I CANT HEAR YOU SPEAK UP!"
Auto earpro mid way through the first round
My heart goes out to the m2 gunners in Ww2
I love how the shot is so supressed that you can hear the sonic cracks from down the range with all that definition
Okay I gotta say I am damn impressed. Taking a .50 down to hearing safe levels is no small thing. I never would have expected that kind of capability out of these cans.
I do not think that these are hearing safe, nor that they can be, since the round is supersonic. Did they say that in the video?
@@tobiaspieringer1653 he said its not super sonic in the first shots
@@poigames2535 he said subsonic round. But you can still hear the thunder. How is that possible lol.
@@poigames2535 it's not "subsonic". These are very much supersonic rounds. It's a .50 BMG the round flies at 2800 fps.

Whoever films and produces your videos need a raise. The filmography is beautiful and the filters are gorgeous, everything looks so clean...very reminiscent of MW2 etc
And the editing and general humour involved 🙂
We learned in MWII that this actually reduces the damage of the round; that is why you see the target to the side taking less damage when the suppressor is on vs when the gun is unsuppressed.
😂😂😂
Thank you doctor.
@Paul Martin you’ll notice the camera representing us while down range was perfectly okay after each suppressed round.
Yikes, must've forgotten to put Stopping Power on it. It's a must for suppressed sniper rifles.
(That's from old MW2 for those wondering)
Yea, it forces it to go subsonic. Completely counter productive to the amazing power of the weapon.
as an armchair youtube expert id say a suppressed 50 cal makes a lot of sense

next time for sure
agreed. the mic gets so blown out anyway it's impossible to get across what it actually sounds like unsuppressed
Better yet, just stick Micah next to the muzzle and tell him to scream until he cant hear anymore. Much more scientific.
The downside is that only really high end specific meters can accurate measure gun shot levels. $20 Amazon special won’t.
It won't decibel meters are shit, they clip above 120dB and cant display true peaks anyway, I'm working in sound measurement and you need pro peak meters for something like that

The difference between supressors can be heard quite well at the 500m test. You can hear that the sonic boom is at equal levels (obviously), but the following thump (actual sound of the firearm being shot) is different.

well you will still have artillery rounds, other explosions explode next to you in war and you will lose your hearing.
That's interesting. I don't think small arms like that require bore evacuators, but the fact that they integrated that into that particular suppressor is pretty cool. Probably cleans out the barrel pretty good and keeps it going for a bit longer between maintenance.
That fire ball out of the ejector port on the first shot of the new suppressor was massive

It was curious to realise in the video where they tested what different sound are like, that if you hear the shot don't start running, it wasn't for you.

Holy shit the difference in the sound if your voice has changed in the last year. I remember watching this a year ago, just came back to re-cap for shits and giggles. Thanks for guiding me to SDI, you may not need to be certified to be a gunsmith but it makes all the difference in knowledge. Its like comparing the difference in the work of cheap workers outside of home depot vs a certified contractor. The signature of the work speaks for itself. I talk about guns so much nowadays and people just are shocked with the things I tell them about what I learned. Yet still, people will always talk down on SDI for “not teaching shit” but then you ask “okay, whats fire lapping?” and they pull their phone out to google it. God bless you, and if you’re reading this Micah, have some stacks of cash around you, thats how Michel Jordan survived AIDs for so long in south park.

Woah. Very observant
I cannot believe how quite that barrett is, makes me wonder how expensive those suppressors are

The suppressor for a $10,000 rifle chambered in anything from $5 to $20 is actually not all that bad in price.
The CGS is about $3k
It is quite "quiet"

That suppressor is insane. It sounds like a tiny rifle with the suppressor. No sonic boom at all! That is crazy!

Even with more recoil the suppression allows you enough time to reacquire your target if a secondary shot is needed.

Great to hear the difference in sound at various distances from the muzzle, as you said difficult perhaps to identify the direction of shot.

Wow I am blown away, I was not expecting it to be that effective
Got to shoot a suppressed Barrett 50 cal in 2015 at an INDOOR range!
There were a group of Barrett Reps there at the range one day letting folks give it a shot and I happen to be shooting 3 lanes over from where they set up shop, so I was practically first in line
This is important info.

Bobby West has to be one of the nicest guys in the firearms industry, let alone Suppressors. Super nice guy
I run the Barrett suppressor on my Barrett M99. It has been godsend as I am able to shoot it at my gun club when other shooters are on the line. One really needs to shoot an unsuppressed .50 BMG to really know the muzzle blast. The Barrett QLR really was a great purchase for me to be able to be a good neighbor on the firing line.
I can only imagine the looks when you pull out the .50 BMG 💀
“Pringles can” about says it all. I am still under an NDA but I worked with an engineer developing new suppressors. It is amazing the engineering that goes into them. This .50 cal suppressor has some Red Hot Chili Peppers in it.

that is definitely the coolest thing I ever seen in UA-cam. what it sounds like when you are getting shot at. PLEASE MORE OF THAT AND GET CAMARA CLOSE TO WHERE BULLET HITS. (LIKE A TARGET OR GROUND) the good old movies bullets hit near you, I think that would cool too
Hey Mike think you can do a video on how to stay warm in the snow/winter, what kind of pants, gloves, socks, shirts, etc. You have the best videos out there btw!
A potential cool video idea (if you haven't already done this) could be to test the long-range performance of various "sniper" rounds. Test different metrics and see the tradeoffs. I know you could probably find much of that information online, but a video of it could still be interesting and fun to watch.
Personally, I'd like to see how 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, 300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, 50 BMG, .270 Win, and other rounds actually perform in a test. Also you could go into detail of the tradeoffs of availability, round weight, etc. Just an idea. Might not be a good one, but just my two cents.
Mike, these videos are so entertaining and the information is RELEVANT, TIMELY and i have found it to be ACCURATE. Thank you.

Flannel Daddy posted when it was going to be restocked. You had to be on your computer then to get it.
You know, they make these things called sound meters, that can measure the sound level of the shots. You could put one near the shooter to get the level they are experiencing, and one or two downrange to measure the levels there. Considering how pricey the rifles, ammunition, and travel for the expert are, perhaps a few sound meters would be in order.
I spent 8 years in the 82nd 1st/504th and on my last deployment we were QRF for an SF ODA from 7th group a handful of times. One of their shooters had a can on his Barrett and it seemed like the largest suppressor I had ever seen in my entire life. It did make me quite happy when I thought about how terrifying taking fire from a large caliber weapon is like that, even when it’s unsuppressed and you have a fighting chance to identity the location and move on it. Having all that hate and discontent coming your way and not being able to use one of your most vital senses to locate it is awesome. I equate it to the first time as an E nothing during OIF and we had some Apache’s tasked to us as CAS. When those things showed up, as an 18 year old E3 who knew nothing I could have sworn Welcome to the jungle started playing and the gunships were flanked by bald eagles 😂

The case for suppressor use is so strong that when someone argues against deregulating them, it immediately reveals how little most people understand about what suppressors can and cannot do. Seems like most people get their 'information' on suppressors from either videogames or movies.
The fact they’re easier to get here in the UK than America is just crazy, I can go out and buy a suppressor here if I wanted to, even though I have no reason to own one because I don’t have a firearms license, yet they’d still sell me one if I wanted one
