Hi, Croatia Army vet here. Great video, sirs. However, you're using standard commercial ammo, not the original military subsonic ones (not available on the market, unless involving crime, as you very well stated) which are recognizable by blue tip and SP-5 or SP-6 markings. Similar results could be obtained reloading the cartridges, to keep them under 280 m/s as the original SP-5. It makes a world of difference. Having used the real army-issue VSS with dedicated ammo, I can assure you that the thing is a truly silent stalker. 100 meters away you just don't hear it. And we did a bit of improving, too... ;)
Air compressed along the leading edge of a high-subsonic bullet might still go supersonic due to beroulli's principle. Reducing speed further or changing the nose shape could reduce or eliminate this effect. In addition, different powders could burn at different rates, possible effecting how effective the baffles are at slowing exhaust gasses.
These guys are such pros at this stuff that they even thought ahead and filmed the intro last, so Brandon could be in the whole video. RIP, Brandon. Thanks for your dedication.

I literally just finished Shadow of Chernobyl last night and I'm so glad I started using my Vintorez at the Pripyat part. I never used it before because I got it pretty late. Unfortunately, I didn't take enough ammunition for it because I thought I'd make more use of my GP so I stocked up on ammunition for that gun, instead. The Vintorez is excellent for medium to long range combat.
Interesting fact. The full name of the weapon is "VSS Vintorez", which means VSS - special sniper rifle (from Russian). And Vintorez - literally "twist the screws" because of the similar sound when firing
This video was awesome, from Brandon and Donut to the skipping rounds out of the ballistics gel and hitting the target.... I really like episodes like this where all the good gunners get together and play around, very funny and very entertaining. 😁👍

I’m from Russia, and I want to say a big thank you for such an interesting review of our weapons! In Russia, the VSS is a cult and quite popular weapon, which is still used by some special forces army groups. Hello to all friends from anouther countries! I wish there was no war in your house, and all the wars that are going on now are over as soon as possible. Peace!
The stock came off to fit it into a transport case with a night site! (. GRU hit kit) The original has an iron site calibrated to 400m and the original has interrupted threads so you turn it 90 degrees and it pops apart. The gas ports in the grooves area of the barrel are surrounded by screens in the suppressor. I first handled the rifle in 96 in the Balkans and it’s stupid quiet in an environment where vehicles are moving or military operations are going on. It has the same job of the Original MP5SD mission. Internal lines sniper weapon. Or straight up assassination. It’s issued down to fire team level as a DMR now.
I really like the VSS's design. It definitely a unique rifle that despite being a bit different from it's counterparts, does its job incredibly well. Really looking forward to getting my hands on one someday as well
It's not that simple. Volume of casing if necked up may be different from true 9x39 plus neck thickness may cause the neck of the casing to crack. You could probably get away with it to some extend but would you risk your 1 of 1 to find out? I don't blame him for not wanting to.
@@MrChristoffer5700 If the powder charge is nominal it's unlikely that a bad casing will do any damage to the gun itself. The casing is not what takes the pressure from the powder, it's a sealant for the gasses on top of a logistic device.
The VSS is a fascinating gun, and I’ve watched a few videos on it. But I had a great time watching two guys with some pretty significant authority in the gun world discuss the weapon! That said, I was pretty fascinated by the removal of that suppressor and the iron sights as related to it. If you guys ever get a hold of enough ammunition, it’d be really cool to see a big breakdown of the VSS including the zero with that suppressor.

The VSS and AS-VAL hold a special place in my heart cause it was the first rifle I actually learned about and was able to remember just by sound and look. I’m still new to gun related stuff but if it wasn’t for the AS-VAL or VSS in STALKER I probably wouldn’t have gotten into guns
Yes, exactly where I found it too! lol

First STALKER then DayZ and Arma the Insugency for me but if I have to take any gun in DayZ I love AS-VAL with AP rounds...have fun
How about that Stalker Gamma update 0.9? Pretty nice eh.
The VSS is by far my favourite firearm in existence; there's just something about it!
Check out the SR-3M\SR-3MP. It's the further development of the VSS\VAL platform.
@@Kia044i love VAL
Interesting fact. The full name of the weapon is "VSS Vintorez", which means VSS - special sniper rifle (from Russian). And Vintorez - literally "twist the screws" because of the similar sound when firing
rather "cut the screw"
Very Special Sniper
@@hwbxjr Более подходит twist, чем cut. Не резать, а вкручивать.

I cannot believe that Garand Thumb killed Brandon Herrera while "airsofting" with a 9x39mm SP-6 round from a VSS, may he rest in peace
A pretty cool way to die..
I mean it was this or ak50 explosion....RIP ak jesus
he who lives by the kalash dies by it
Brandon just keeps getting unlucky with compressed air
It was a good death 😆
This is the best Garand Thumb opening ever. Change. My. Mind. Brandon sells the intro it so well that it have to watch it every quarter. 😂
This video was awesome, from Brandon and Donut to the skipping rounds out of the ballistics gel and hitting the target.... I really like episodes like this where all the good gunners get together and play around, very funny and very entertaining. 😁👍
I would kill to have a core group of buddies to do shit like this with, by far one of the coolest videos in terms of auditory experience. that weird ricochet/breaking apart of the projectile sound was nuts.
Hell man, come chill with me & my friends.
We're always out on the range doing something.
@@pewpewTN PewPew tactical
The VSS line of weapons have always been my favorite. Its such a beautiful gun, and unsupressed, sounds incredible.
VSK-94 and SR-3 series should interest you too
Omg... literally the best intro tou guys ever did
We are so lucky to have the Guntube group that we do. These 3 idiots, Kentucky and Demolition Ranch are really freaking funny and know their stuff.
This was the craziest thing I’ve seen in quite some time. That round passing thru the gel and tumbling was insane
Demo ranch sucks
Fax and I love most of them are in Texas to im tryna meet them all an hav a drink 😂
Well, there is one more, but you probably won't understand him. It's "Крупнокалиберный переполох". And he is a much more Idiot
Its crazy that Brandon actually owns a vss. I cant even imagine how much its worth
oh easily $10k or more. really it's all what someone would be willing to pay and im positive there are people in the gun communities around the US who would pay well over $10,000 to have that specific VSS
@@07Hawkeye I would say definitely more than 10k bc an SVD goes for that or more
I mean he found a parts kit, and has experience making russian guns from parts kits......
@@07Hawkeye only 10? I see them sell once every few months on gunbroker/armslist for upwards of 40-50k, it’s insane, and a life stretch goal
Checked now, gunbroker has a parts kit for 15k
Great episode! Great to have Brandon and Cody involved, looks like a lot of fun was had!
When im sad I watch this video just for the opening. Garand Thumb and crew could be their own brand of comedy skit show if they wanted to
Props to Garand for giving a shoutout to unknown UA-camrs like Brandon Herrera
Who’s that?
Right fuck that Matt Hoover guy. Let him rot in prison. I’m actually disappointed.
Brandon isnt unkown lol, and hes a bot I swear ive seen you in every single video i've watched
unknown for you ...

I really wanted to see some down range audio. Would be interesting to hear what being shot at by one sounds like. And how far away the muzzle blast can be heard. A comparison with 8.6 wouldve been really cool!
I am once again in the comments asking Garand Thumb to host an annual, week long SERE course so we can become deadly in the mountains.
Watchin gi Jane now
That’s not what sere is for…..
AFAIK, SERE Instructors are basically banned from teaching Resistance and Escape techniques to civilians. Basically the fun stuff. Which isn't very fun.
It's basically the ABU GRAIB EXPERIENCE from what little I was told by the old heads who graduated, anonymously of course.
Just visit a hardcore dominatrix. Or just pay a butch lesbian to lock you in a dark room, blindfolded, tied to a chair, headphones taped to your head blasting death metal and screeching owls for 48 hours straight...

This has gotta be one of my fav videos of yours so far. The funny little skit opening, the janky weather and screeching of the van's awning. All quality entertainment lolol
Hands down the best episode ever. VSS The King of firearms. Loved the sound coming from the skipping. I love this channel. Keep it up guys. It just gets better and better.
I’m from Russia, and I want to say a big thank you for such an interesting review of our weapons! In Russia, the VSS is a cult and quite popular weapon, which is still used by some special forces army groups.

Nothing like drinking at the range, super cool and safe!
@Chuck B as long as you drink responsibility and know your limits.
Always love to see my favorite UA-camrs together in videos. Garand Thumb, Donut and Brandon together is always a good time.
Gotta say that intro had me dying 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 the ragdoll fall that brandon did was the cherry on top there.😂😂
PUBG showed me the thrill and power of the VSS. Garand Thumb showed me the friends the VSS makes along the way.
Best pub g gun
I used to terrorize players. They would run from cover to cover not knowing where I was. This was from way out. Like double holdover. So fun.
It’s issued down to fire team level as a DMR now.
thank you sir... nice to read something professional for a change
Thanks I wanted to say this too about the stock.
Now, I am wondering, were in "the Balkans", and how come... Did we met somewhere..? ;)
Soon as the war ends I’m buying one
How do you know this mutch?
Very cool! I've seen one in Estonia years ago with a military group. I enjoy these videos so much, thanks for keeping it humorous.
One of my favourite guns in AVA.
A suppressed automatic sniper, it was even more op than the p90.
That intro was perfectly funny 😆 Brandon has incredible stunt skills as I believed he got shot. “Once crime is involved, anything is possible.” 😂
I really like the VSS's design. It definitely a unique rifle that despite being a bit different from it's counterparts, does its job incredibly well. Really looking forward to getting my hands on one someday as well
Unless u make it, rather impossible to get in the states lol
I hope you don't mind a bit of crime then. Going to be very unlikely to get unless you build it otherwise. Even then parts kits are rare.
Just the way that Brandon ragdolled was absolutely on point. I nearly threw up my beer from laughing!
Every now and then I come back just to watch this intro, the way Micah starts whining gets me every time 😂
The attitude approached in filming this should be every gun video ever. Felt like I was there. Thanks guys
That intro was perfect. Short, funny, but not lingering and not too long! Well done team! 😂
Short, funny, but not lingering. Just like Brandon's airsoft career.
The intro to this one is incredibly priceless!! I've watched this three times and I bust out laughing. Good times, keep it up my good dudes!
Really surprised Brandon isn't setup to resize brass cases and reload his own 9x39
He's not that smart!😂
It's not that simple. Volume of casing if necked up may be different from true 9x39 plus neck thickness may cause the neck of the casing to crack. You could probably get away with it to some extend but would you risk your 1 of 1 to find out? I don't blame him for not wanting to.
Really surprised Brandon didn't make a custom 12,7 mm VSS
@@MrChristoffer5700 If the powder charge is nominal it's unlikely that a bad casing will do any damage to the gun itself. The casing is not what takes the pressure from the powder, it's a sealant for the gasses on top of a logistic device.
@MrChristoffer5700 I reload this 9x39 all the time I have an sbr and a bolt action as well..

That was terrifying. That round sounds like it vaporizes everything in its path.

This round is subsonic for a reason. It's REALLY heavy and hits hard in 200-400 meter range
