I bought an identical MPC Outlaw along with a Kramer DMZ5000 from a pawnshop for $375 over twenty years ago. Still have both. The good old days. Great bass video
Chris Squire had the Flanger and Octave box in his custom MPC. Additionally, he had the wings narrowed at the bottom, two additional control knobs as part of his electronics (likely giving each pickup set individual tone and volume) and a 3rd flick switch added; likely a battery-kill switch.
Chris’ MPC only held 2 MPC modules. Unfortunately, his white custom MPC was destroyed when it was blown off an outdoor stage during a micro-burst. It fell 6 feet onto a wet cement floor. Chris ended up buying a standard used MPC Outlaw Bass. Before his passing I offered to him to repair the bass because I had many MPC bass body parts….
This dude is the best dude he really wants to elevate the art form through information. You got to love that positivity and the encouragement of creative exploration!
I KNEW Chris used FLANGER on Tempus Fugit, Cinema, Leave It AND the outtake track Song No. 4(Satellite)/Telephone Secrets! Many have stated and thought it was the Phaser, so MANY thanks for clearing that one up and debunking that long perpetuated myth.
Been keeping an eye out for one of these for a while now. Something about the cartridge system, the amalgam of design elements and the weird shapes of their basses and guitars. I just love unique and weird Japanese instruments and this one is one of the more "out there" instruments. If its good enough for Squire then...
This may have been my bass at one point. I had one with a phaser and flanger in the late 90s. I bought it at a music store in Dayton Ohio for $125. Sold it (like a damned fool) to a pawn shop in Uhrichsville Ohio about a year later. I've missed it every day it's been gone.
Did they put that Rickenbacker Bridge on that? I thought Ovation Mangna were awesome 70's weirdness. Gibson got their weird on by hiring Bob Moog. Sincerely Mike B. B. From Philly
I almost bought one in the 80s and regret not doing so.But I have always had one question concerning the plug in modules; Why? The bass is so cool but imo the modules are a stupid idea.Just more things to screw up and there are tons of arguably better sounding pedals.Good jamming BTW.
Nice bass, I have an electra bass....It looks like a Westone Spectrum (I have 6 Spectrum DX basses!) Could be fun but I think that effets were in their infance at that time. Just normal bass might be ok but sounds muddy with very poor definition to me. The effects sound bad......Probably a "wall hanger" or collector bass, seems like a bit of a gimick bass.

Great info thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I realized my mistake too late. Did he ever respond to you?
Wait why is no one talking about that green Serek SG next to him it looks sick.
Because...Yes. Literally, as in Chris Squire bass FINALLY getting a PROPER rundown.
Man, that is one gorgeous looking bass. The swing open control plate is also kinda clever.
I have never seen this bass before
Thanks for sharing. Cool series and I love the look of you’re basses too

I do remember seeing these in Guitar Player magazine. Cool thing to have!
So many cool things about this bass to comment on, but I really like that Electra lettering on the headstock. Funky and sleek.
Agreed.
What a sweet looking bass. It sounds as good as it looks, too.
All hail CHRIS SQUIRE!!!
Maybe I’ve been playing that riff wrong for years too! 🤣
But the Tempus Fugit Riff sounded and looked pretty spot on to me.
Nice Find! And in excellent shape to boot.

Yeah I thought it mighta been the phaser until I heard the FLANGER! Instant Chris.
I just recently rewatched the video where Chris brought up this bass, cool to see an in depth rundown of what it sounds like. Great video!
Hot Licks!
Literally the best bass ever
YESSSS! Thank you for sharing this!

Wow. Nice shape! Never seen before
that looks and sounds amazing!

Nice sounds! I love these weird wired basses
This is a great upload THANK YOU
Those are super cool!
Absolutely awesome, man! 🤙🏻
Does higher weight really give it a "solid low end" tho?
You said there was a list modules somewhere in the description but I have been unable to find it
What's that green sg looker with the 6 n the headstock behind you?
Damnit I want one of these. I bet ur the one who bought the one I was trying to buy on reverb. I’m gonna have JML build one for me
its going up on reverb soon, got too many basses over here!
I wonder if Electra designed the Outlaw by taking a Ric bass and modifying it until they got that body shape. Would explain the Ric bridge :)
And the neck-thru design
Did they put that Rickenbacker Bridge on that?

Yup its the original bridge!
im pretty stoned so correct me if im too far off base but this thing is basically an un-microwaved ovation magnum is it not
Finally about my dream bass
he says in his starlicks video that it’s an octave and a flanger.
Beside Chris Squire i haven't seen any famous bassist playing this instrument.
Dude I've got your same setup. I'm curious, does your flanger give a massive pop when you switch it on?

Oh look, the tempus fugit bass

Nice body shape. I like it in bass format, better than the six-stringers. Someone should resurrect that body shape, but leave the fx on the floor.
I could have bought one in the 90s for a cheap price and regret it every time I see one.
