Serek Basses / Upholstered Armitage Bass Demo [THE COUCH BASS}
Let's dispel the myth that your furniture can't also make some music!
This has been a dream bass for a LONG time. I present to thee, quite possibly the first ever, UPHOLSTERED BASS GUITAR. This is not your grandma’s couch cushion…
First came the vintage fabrics, courtesy of local artisan and collector Jubilee Street. Next, to find a willing upholsterer… Chicago Upholstery and Drapery in Evanston was more than willing to take us on, and what a job they have done. Get a load of that piping! And the edges of the body even have a slight plushy cushion to them!
First thing everyone wants to know is how the upholstery affects the tone. I could make some cringey pun and tell you it has a wonderful, PILLOWY tone, but really, this bass sounds exactly as it should. Loaded with a Curtis Novak BiSonic and strung with Dunlop flats, it will take you to P-bass heaven and beyond. And the best part is, you can ditch your fancy polishing cloth and guitar spray: all this bass needs to stay clean is your favorite lint roller!

Serek Basses / Lincoln Bass Demo / Alembic vs Lusithand Filter Preamp Shoot Out

I have been a fan of the Alembic sound for a long, long time. We have used Alembic electronics in our Metropolis basses in the past, so why not try 'em in the Lincoln as well? We also recently became hip to Lusithand Devices who make a similar Alembic/Wal inspired bass filter preamp. A perfect opportunity for some experimentation! Question for you, if I send my signal out to the front of house, why would I want to send a signal from the quarter inch jack to pedals? Isn't it kind of late to send the signal to pedals if it was already sent to front of house and is coming out of the speakers?????

    Thanks fo your very good video! This 4000 has a very straight forward sound, very simple, close to a P Bass, the 4003 here sounds typically like a rick bass tone, it has a lot more low mids, a richer sound, like going thru a tiny chorus , and even the "rubber "dynamic of the 4003 is a lot more expressive than the 4000, this is the Rick sound ! This 4000 is for me far from the classic Rick bass sound. I own a 73 4000 (set neck) that sounds between your 4003 and your 4000.... I am a sound engineer since 20 years.

    Very cool, Originally (the first 100 Kramer dukes) were made from the center section from a Kramer 8 string bass with the wings and the headstock cut off, Two DiMarzio pickups and a Leo Quan Badass bridge. Not the same body shape as The Duke

    I have a Lusithand Single NFP on my Sire V5 fretless with tapewounds, and I am getting all sorts of wonderful weirdness with modulation and fuzz, definitely a game-changer. It's nice to compare to the Alembic system which sounds very cool too, a bit more controlled.

    One of these was the first bass guitar I had. Got it for $85.00 I think it was, from Dixie Music Shop, long gone now, in Louisville, Kentucky back around 1975 or so. Developed an interest in playing bass and this was the most Mom and Dad were willing to fork out on one. Can't remember if it was new or used, but yeah, it was the least expensive one they had. Given the value of them now, I wish I still had it.

    I would argue that this bass sounds great. First off the original pickup is very bright and punchy though without that really nasal stingray sound, so you have no trouble cutting through the mix. Secondly, all 3 positions are humbucking because this is actually a Schaller quad-coil pickup with the "single coil" position being wired like a precision pickup. Playing with your hand closer to the neck gets close to a Fender P-bass tone. It's true that the parallel and single settings lack some low end, but you can EQ that easily on your amp or with a pedal. If I had to criticize something, I thought these did come with rubber pads, but I guess some did not or it deteriorated because mine didn't have one either. I'd also add that the bridge and tuners are much easier to swap out or source parts for than a Steinberger or custom headless bridge.

    Those basses were kind of a mini Steinberger, using Kramer aluminum braced neck tech. In lieu of the Steinberger folding leg brace (for seated playing), they glued a rubbery lined strip onto the bottom bout of the body, which worked great until it fell off. Steinbergers also have a plastic plate that rotates out from the back, with a strap button on it, which helped eliminate neck dive. But my Kramer balances out on the strap OK even without such a device (that button is on a neck plate screw).

    Mica and Mary are so nice to deal with. I enjoy visiting the Mothership since it's only 15 minutes away from me and looking at all the cool posters, and seemingly countless Alembic basses and guitars in the shop area. It's like an hour vacation from the real world. I look forward to hearing the SEREK bass. Wow, your SEREK sounds AMAZING. I love the mix of Alembic and a bolt on neck. I own a Yamaha MIJ P/J bass with Alembic pups and pre and it sounds great, too, but yours growls !

    What gauge round wound strings do you prefer on your 4003? I always find round wound strings to be floppy because of the 33 1/4" scale. I switched to flats because there is more tension but I miss rounds.

    I never understood why some like to hear their tone different from what the audiences is hearing via FOH. If I'm using my amp, it's because my signal is not going to FOH. Thus, it's a smaller venue.

    • @charliekrengel1344
      @charliekrengel1344 Місяць тому

      IME, playing in an original hard-ish rock power trio, the tone i have dialed on stage to make sure I can hear myself is not what works well to FOH. I tend to roll off bass, boost mids, and roll off treble. Also, having listened back to live recordings of my band off my amp's DI, I run more gain than necessary for my stage sound to help get the punch I like I will always have my amp on stage so I have real time control over what I am hearing, but am working on a rig with a Preamp/DI (Like maybe the Venus?) that let's me send a cleaner flatter EQ'ed signal to the desk, and already have a finally FIRST in chain, so on gigs we are recording, i can get a great capture of just my bass and add any amps/effects/etc. in the post mix.
