I need to say something here because if I don't it will just bug me...
I am a "feel player", if I'm not feeling a product, if the tone/sound doesn't inspire me then my performance is lack lustre.
I try not to speak negatively of products whenever possible, something's are just not for me... this is right at the top of that list.

I know exactly where you're coming from, Rob. Nothing beats jamming with the guys and when I took this pedal over to show them, they couldn't take to it either. From a marketing perspective Digitech have really pushed the band thing, however it's a practice tool first and foremost. Solo gigging would be as hilarious as trying to use a standard looper! Now what the "Trio" excels at it trying different ideas with any chord progression and rhythm you like. I have seen my guitar playing improve 900% in the last few weeks owning this thing.

Rob Chapman No need to worry, Rob!
Actually i liked this demo very much! You where totally honest as was the Cap10! Two guys seeing this product in their personal way, disagreeing, friendly discussing ... couldn't be a better demo imho.
I do see it in the Cap10s way (see my post below): great practicing tool to play at home for non pro players like i am. Using it you are "not alone" but "being backed up".
But - watching your channel for more than 5 years - i did guess: this one is not your cup of tea ... let alone your cup of cold brew java (;-)) ... why worry? We are 2 different players and you are a well respected pro to me!

Rob Chapman Not a problem, and your opinion is your opinion. But, not all of us have ready access to a drummer and bass player! View the product as the first of its kind and for its intended use, and it's just fine. The strong sales show that a lot of people like the pedal.

Tom Reid I agree. Completely spoils this demo. Chappers is a fine guitarist but I wanted to hear what this pedal produced, not just his playing. The 12 o'clock positions for the drums and bass would have been much better; balances the 'trio' of sounds evenly.

I bought this as a practice tool. I understand soloing, I'm an everyday guitarist of six years, I play in a band I probably put in a solid 1000 hours per year. Something I struggle with is progressing my solo work or nailing a riff for a new song we are working on. I know I can play but that metronomic timing or extending a nice solo into something awesome was a work in progress. I kid you not, I have used this for about 4 hours this weekend and have learnt/taught myself more than I have in the last year. It's the ultimate backing track creator for that type of work that just goes on forever. That said if I walked into a bar and someone was using it to back themselves I'd smash it to fucking pieces and throw them the cash Han Solo style though.

This pedal is not to replace anyone. It's a drum machine, that's all. This is a superb tool for practice and experimentation and although UA-cam has many backing tracks, there are adverts it seems like every five minutes! and you don't have to spend ages going through instruction to program this thing. It's never going to be as flexible as a Roland drum machine. But you try programming one of those! With this you strum chords, any chord in the rhythm you want and it will loop something so you can try out ideas at a price that's less than many guitar pedals.

IMHO a demo worth watching. The 2 men both offer thoughts when interacting with the pedal, that cannot be denied. I am happy saying that we have entered the realm of a digital device, able to put down a groove that works (often correctly) with the chords and humanism. As stated, this is just the beginning of this tech. PEACE

Drum beats already existed with multi-effects pedals, but you had to set the beats beforehand, it was useful but very limited. Thanks for the video guys. I'd just add 2 comments as a few other folks have.
First, the drum and bass sounds do come across as more "authentic" sounding when played back through a decent hifi amp, rather than a guitar amp.........
Second, it's definitely just a practice tool. If you use it with a looper after it, you can create the backing in 3 parts, record on the looper, then add the guitar backing parts, which you can then practice lead over.....works really well when you can't get the band to come round at 9am on a Saturday morning.....

I usually respect your reviews but I have to agree with the criticisms this time. The drums and bass sound best out of the mixer jack into a PA - you put the signal into a guitar amp instead, sharing the signal with the guitar. You barely turned the pedal up, not even to 12 o'clock (why?). The 3 parts, which you did not demonstrate,, have differing emphasis for bass and drums (did you read the manual?). Part 2 is the most intense, part 1 (the only one you demonstrated) is the least intense, and part 3 is in between. You barely explored the 7 genres and 12 styles per genre. A disappointing review, not one of your best.

Have only discovered Chappers and The Captain recently and am avidly plowing thru` loads of the vids, love `em to bits, very grounded comments/info. Feel a little disgruntled with this one though, having sold a coupla hundred units of the Trio I would think they could have done a better job reviewing it. It was obvious from the off that the product was almost disliked and held in a bit of contempt and the Captain actually looked surprised at times to find the trio doing what it said on the box! You could barely make out what the pedal actually sounded like with the controls being constantly messed with and never set further than quarter to the the hour. Most other demos of the thing show the controls at midday which seems to be the balanced idea. If I had sold 200 units of the thing I like to think I would have given it a pretty good workout ......

I know the Beat Buddy sounds much better and is a bit more flexible when it comes to fills, etc. But the Trio is great for creating a drum track that relates more to your rhythm. I bought one and LOVE it. I could care less if the BASS and DRUMS don't sound like the real thing (although I think they sound purty good). I think its a great tool and I have a BLAST with it. I feed the TRIO into my looper to save IDEAS I like. I was playing the chord progression to "Since I've been Loven you" by Led Zep. Because I wasn't playing correctly is still came up with something somewhat close. I then played the INTRO over it. I found that my lead was totally different than if I played over an accurate backing track. I found that entertaining and opened my eyes to how different an outcome can be by being slightly off. What's funny Rob, it looked like you were having a lot of FUN playing along with your new bass and drummer.

Rob, did you or Captain Lee try out the Digitech Trio +.. much improved newer installment with more features, more genre, 5 parts sequence, intensity, looper and SD slot was in Anderton's video.. Quite enjoyable but want to see your review on it. I have the original Trio without memory slot.

So, when will we have a Chappers/Captain review of the new TRIO+? And, will you give that new pedal a fair shot, or decide to trash it in advance, like for the original TRIO?

Seems useful for writing or even having some drums roughed out for a basic demo cut. Also if you are a new looper, the styles could give you some direction when it comes to learning what kind of layering sort of sounds best on a specific song.

This is probably the most honest (and humorous) review I've seen for this pedal. Having just bought one I agree that this is fine for practice/songwriting/bedroom guitarists like me, but I wouldn't like to try it live!! I'm no tech head but i''m starting to get my head around this reasonably well (between work/school runs/nappy changes etc etc). I have a looper which I record the Trio bass/drums into once I have the chord progression, then just mess about with it till I get nagged by my wife to spend "quality time" with my family! It is what it is but as the guys say, there's bound to be somebody making a better version as we speak..

I'm glad I watched this. Before I even scrolled down and saw's Rob's comment, I was thinking, "If Rob can't make this thing sound good, then I'd probably be frustrated and disappointed with this pedal, especially for 3 bills". I'm still somewhat tempted, but my lust is now cooled down; and I'll stick to canned backing tracks for a while. I have some fun with backing tracks on CD when I get together with some of me band-mates and just want to jam. No streaming issues and better sound quality than I usually get from most YT vids. I also have my G-DEC chips to goof with too. But maybe I'll still grab a Trio if I see a good deal. But congrats to DigiTech for coming out with a tempting new guitar toy.

4 hours later I just had to pull myself away.
I can see why people love this thing.

Great talent on the guitar player! :-) Good review as well. I've got one and I'm trying to figure out how to get what I want from it! :-) Don't have the Trio+ and of course, THAT is the OBVIOUS next trick to do! :-) I'm very happy I bought this thing. ( no endorsements coming my way...) Geat Stuff!

I think it's a really cool pedal for what it was made to do! This is for people who have no one else to jam with. I like it! For those who are used to jamming with people all of the time then this would probably seem like lifeless crap, like a robot. Understandable. For those who don't get to jam at all with others, this is a nice fill-in until they can find people to play with! I'd definitely check it out if I'm at the store. :)
As mentioned in some of the comments below, maybe you can do a Part 2 for the review of this pedal, with Capt. and Rabea testing it out if they want? A bit more in depth?

I'd be interested in seeing how this would work in tandem with an actual looper, where one could have looped rhythm guitar with the Trio doing drum and base while playing a lead at the same time.

Thanks for the demo mates! I love your on screen chemistry. You're not a couple, are you? Kidding. I just bought one of these with the foot switch and cables ($89 on Amazon total) for the very purpose Rob recommends, practice practice practice. I hear that's how you get to Carnegie Hall. By the way, my prediction for where this is going you'll see at NAMM 2020 or so. It'll be a pedal like this that adjusts the backing track for the key you're strumming, almost like a harmony pedal adjusts the backing vocals in real time. Something that would back up a strumming solo acoustic loser (me). Just my 2 cents... You two rock, thanks!!!

The future would be a pedal like this from the likes of TC Electrics that could download your favourite drummer and bass player with a toneprint type of affair. That would be cool.

Rob is a guitar player in a band. I don't think this product is aimed at him, and I don't think he understands the market it is aimed at.
This product is aimed at the bedroom player. For its intended market it is going to be a great product.
    Cant wait to get one.

I totally agree with what is said between 2.30 and 3.30 - this is not a live performance tool, and is strictly for practice and composition. For a start it can only hold three memories which tends to lend itself to verse/chorus/bridge of one song.
However, for me as a starter player this has been my 'best buy' pedal (from the lovely chaps at Andertons) - because as suggested it helps me to learn what chords and notes work with what basslines.
The future of this pedal is to get a looper built in so you can get the drums, bass AND rhythm guitar running and practice solos over the top. Increase the memory and maybe then it could become a useful live tool.
I would recommend this highly to starter players looking to develop their skills at playing along with a set rhythm and bassline structure.

So, does it actually play back the original guitar track you recorded? If not, I think thats a mistake, since how its presented, you can use this a supplement for a band to develop your guitar ideas - so it would be nice to hear that idea while you are trying to develop it...
