I always appreciate your honesty in these videos. There's no BS in your opinions, no agenda, just a straightforward "it's cool, but not for me". So many people pretend to love everything they test, which is obviously fake.
Very good review. Excellent point about thinking like a bass player or drummer when in "listening" mode. This really does result in a much more accurate analysis.
I have the TRIO and TRIO +, love the pedal. SOOOOOO MUCH FUN !!!! I can't imagine someone not liking the TRIO. What I like to do, is playing the chord progression or bass lines (root notes) to my favorite songs. The RHYTHM will be somewhat close. That's what makes it FUN !!! trying to play the solo over that slight deviation. It's fascinating how just a slight deviation can change the song to something else. FUN I SAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You put it into words brilliantly. Agree 100%. I think this pedal is the coolest bit of innovation to happen in this market for the longest time. I can even imagine another version which plays entirely RANDOM beats for you, including tempo, and you change the beat with the press of a button, that would be insanely useful for coming up with ideas
You fixed my Trio!!! I was befuddled by the rushed, higher-tempo rhythms I get after trying to teach the Trio in its learning mode. Now I get it. Already enjoyed the Trio, and now will enjoy it much more.
If only everybody would do such great videos - with good arguments. I also like the Trio and your hint to simplify accords and rhythm should be tried by everyone before sending it back. It it perfect to learn to play in a band context. I am looking forward to the new Trio Version with looper.
I remember seeing the NAMM video on this one and the written review with the trouble you described so I held from purchasing. Now it is clear why it fits my needs as a beginner guitarrist...great video!!
I Loooooove this video, you just sold me this and I was convinced that it wasn't worth the try but... damn... you make it work. Awsome! Now I wanna try it out
So glad i found your channel. You got yourself another subscriber immediately. Thank you for your selfless efforts to better our skills and knowledge. 😊
Great review of this and helped me to use it better also. I did not even think of using the scat process before i watch this review, what a difference. The one thing i like is to be able to change is the bass and drum sounds like EQ the bass and drum sounds to type of music playing.
I just got one last week and it's pretty fun. It takes some fiddling with it like you showed to get a beat you like. Once I find that I just loop it and I can add all my pedal effects with out it distorting the original sound. Really good tool for practice.
I bought that pedal back when Sweetwater first started offering it which is probably 3 or 4 years ago and I must say I've never really taken it seriously since I took it out of the box... I used it a few times and messed around with it but I never really felt like I understood it until now. Thanks so much and keep the hits coming. LOL
Thanks Phillip for this great tip. I have been playing with my Trio Plus but can never seem to get the correct drum and bass backing that I want. Your tip on thinking like bass player is fantastic and I will definitely try that.
I recently got a Trio+ and was blown away by how great it was. In my 42 years of playing, I don't remember when the last time I was this excited about a pedal. It would be great to see a review on it and get your thoughts about the improvements and where you'd like to see it go. That is if Digitech has anyone left who can do this kind of work.
Thank you... thank you... thank you! I know those is an old video and pedal...but I had fun with this pedal in the beginning though it lost it's luster because I didn't figure out that "scat" to it technique...especially in how it reacts to what you play if your playing is more busy in the rhythm! I aimlessly searched for patterns in the various styles that just wouldn't fit what I was going for and I just couldn't figure out why! Now I'm enjoying using this pedal even more...and especially after getting the firmware update! I bought mine new for $50 when the Trio + came out...and got the FS3X control footswitch to go along with it. For under a $100 ...it's a lot of fun, on top of an amazing learning tool, and beats a plain metronome any day! If only it had a beats per second marker...I'll have to figure that out some way. For now...this'll keep me plenty busy... though next, I'll need to figure out how to use it with my Looper! Thanks for all you do Phil!
Great review. Simple and precise demo really helped. Just got one last week. I paid 68 Canadian brand new so I jumped at it with out even understanding what it was. First attempt was awful so I went to youtube saw that you had a review and I am on my way. Thank you so much for all you do for guitar players like me.
Great job, ive seen a few people do reviews on this, but until now i realized they didn't kow how to use it correctly. I pretty much learned how to play guitar by jamming with other musicians, 2 weeks after picking up the guitar i was jamming with a bass player and a drummer who already knew their shit. This pedal now makes a lot more sense to me.
That was great. Thank you. Now, I'm waiting for Part II from you with more instruction and tips for developing effective "backing tracks" from the Trio. My practice has been feeling rather spartan these days, not sufficiently musical, without benefit of some, you know, music. The metronome and simple rhythm machine are useful aids but not sufficiently musical. I ordered a Trio yesterday and am totally stoked about playing with two backing players. I can hardly wait.
I watched a video on this pedal on UA-cam, I paused the video five minutes in and bought one an Amazon with Christmas vouchers so it cost me £6.50 then watched the rest - but much more excited 😁. I’ve only had it a few days, the first couple I was ready to take a blowtorch to it but I felt the pedal was so impressive it had to be me - it was. I was just starting to figure it out (a bit) but your video Phill was awesome. Think Bass and scat. I bought the add on pedal too. I’m really looking forward to getting good with this pedal because the possibilities are exciting. Thanks for your input always enjoy your videos.
Thx for your time on the video. I did watch a few others and yours came at the right time. I had heard some complaints that your video might very well resolve. One person had issues (they said) with the Trio plus constantly changing the beat because though they were laying down an initial track that it would change as soon as they deviated in the least. now you forced the Trio plus to give you the timing while you held a count and then when you wanted to play inside of that with the more bouncy riff the drums and bass stayed the way they were in the first round. So right there I can tell there is at least more to it then something that just changes with every move like an overzealous gps mapping your trip when you miss a few turns. But right now I am also trying to find out what the limits are in the Looper... how many minutes are allowed on each cycle or (track) and how many of these loops can be inserted in each song? I know, lots of questions but really the first part is praise. So thx again and hope someone can give me an idea on those specs.
i got this pedal, for learning leads it is a game changer... i plug the mixer plug into a powered pa speaker.... the simpler lick u put in the better, IMHO.... cheers, thanks for talking about this one.... good vid :)
A friend is gifting me one of these and your video best expressed how it works. Thanks for speaking the musican's language. Have enjoyed your expertise for years.
Good video Phil. Thinking in terms of just the chords to be played rather than focussing on the rhythm pattern is a very good idea. I just picked one of these up brand new for about $65 CDN. Fun pedal to use for practice or songwriting.
I have one of these, I find it a lot of fun to play with. It takes some getting used to but even if you just use it as a drum machine it works very well with a lot of flavor, rolls etc., to add color. More than just a boring drum machine. He did a good job showing the best way to use it. You need to record the loops very simply and let the Trio work out the background itself. There is a more advanced Trio, the Trio+ out, but I've never tried that one.
Being a bass player, I bought the Digitech BP 50 years ago. Lots of usable effects. The 'Arena Reverb' on about 3 is remarkably convincing. Make sure to use the included power supply. When batteries fail it screams like an alien.
The ability to save 12 songs with sequenced 5 parts + recorded loops, 12 genres, to a memory card, makes it a lot more useful performing. At least I hope so.
excellent video. a buddy of mine who's a blues guitarist and singer and has had one of these for about a year now. He's just messed around with it for a while, but about a few months ago, has started using it for practicing when the rest of the band isn't able to.. with that, he's recording some solo music that is pretty phenomenal. great product.
Jim Morrison said one day a musician will sit in a room on his own with machines and make music. This has hit the right spot a guitar oriented very human sounding backing band. This is a great product for budding musicians and developing this with greater options the sky is the limit. Needs a save to user complete song patches option to create backing tracks you can recall for live performance. Got one of these and a Trio+ you can make and record demo tapes on your own. Great creative tool for singer songwriters etc.
Hey Phillip, love your reviews, as always. Now that we're a few years out from when this product was released, would you say this is still the best for the value in terms of what the pedal does? And would you recommend this over the JamMan? Thx.
One of my good friends mentioned this pedal when I was talking about loopers. He mentioned that it was "Band-In-a-box" in a pedal. I think this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the great review!
Maybe you can answer this for me. I have trio+ with footswitch & have been using very successfully, love it. The one thing I can't find answer to ..... it says it will save 12 songs, there are 6 banks, how do you have 2 songs on 1 bank when it has to be empty to create new songs? Or maybe I'm on the wrong track! Any help is appreciated thanks.
Can you tell me how much time you are allowed to make the chord changes for the Trio to learn the changes? Can you play a whole song(3-5 minutes) and have it play the bass and drums along with that? I know this review is old but I can't find much info on the Trio. Love your channel! Thankz
I bought one of these TRIO pedals last night and thought to myself...what the fuck did I just waste my money on, I just couldn’t get a decent rhythm...drums were either too fast or slow drawn out baselines then I watched your video and everything just fell into place!!!! you’re right it’s so simple when you think outside the box, thanks for that
would this pedal be practical to use in a live solo gig, has anyone tried to gig live with this. or could anyone recommend a similar pedal that is good for solo gigs I tried drum machines and it just sounds boring .The bass on this pedal is what has caught my attention
Excellent video, does the bass player have tools strings an extra pick now and then, extra cords, and can it fix the PA if it goes down? the bass player is always that guy, Heh I'm gonna get one.
Do you guys ever play live with your Trio+ to really songs not just looping improv? I love the BeatBuddy Because I could use it live with Intro Fills live crashes and fills and outright fills
I can't believe I didn't know about this for the past 5 years. My mistake, I should have pressed that subscribed button before. This pedal seems to be INSANELY useful for coming up with ideas.
I use a ZOOM G1 four in front of my Trio+... it has a looper that I use to make perfect musical motifs that the Trio+ eats up like M&M's... with a Digitech looper stationed after the Trio+, I can dub and overdub all night long...
Phillip''''just got one & trying to get familiar with It''''One thing still not clear on''''When you start playing your track''''How long do you have before the trio stops recording your chords??? I understand the 3 parts recording thing,,,,but the length of recording time it gives you''''seems very short.....Thanks''''& love watching all your vids....

I noticed the sound quality is not as good when just played through a guitar amp. The Digitech demos run the pedal through a separate speaker system. Have you found that to be the case that the bass and drum sounds are not great through a guitar amp?
+kdrake777 I thought it sounded fine. I have a micro PA, but I felt it sounded fine. It would probably sound better through the effects loop, but again just didn't want to take the time since I thought it sounded fine.
This all seems fine if you are sitting around at home and just jamming, or maybe live if you are just going to play improvised pieces. I would love it if there was a way to go through a song (like on the video) and then record it to play back live at a gig. As it is now, it is just a toy, all be it an awesome one.
I always appreciate your honesty in these videos. There's no BS in your opinions, no agenda, just a straightforward "it's cool, but not for me". So many people pretend to love everything they test, which is obviously fake.
+Progbloke 66 Andy @ PGS for example.
+crazyuncleduke9 Not aware of this dude. Sounds like someone I wouldn't appreciate !
I was referring to ProGuitarShopDemos.
Andy is a great player but never gives an opinion.
If you want truth watch JustNickMusic.
+crazyuncleduke9 I'll check it out. Thanks !
Dude I love you comment.
Has to be my top 5 favorite tbh.
I'd spend money to read it again.
I recomend it to everyone.
Thank you for explaining how this pedal works. I couldn't figure it out by myself.
Very good review. Excellent point about thinking like a bass player or drummer when in "listening" mode. This really does result in a much more accurate analysis.

motokev great to hear mate. It’s only $49 at Sweetwater at the moment could be worth a purchase! Thanks.

Been through quite a few reviews for this pedal, and this is by far the best one.
I was about to put the pedal on the chopping board and sell it until I saw this video. "Think like a bass player." That's it!
Thank you, Phillip.
Phil you did it again....... You taught me Something as usual ! Thank you so much Sir JT
I just got the newer version of this pedal and this video is so helpful thanks Phillip!
Very useful. It clarifies the use of the Trio. Thanks!
You are the best. Thanks for The vids. Im learning a lot from your vids. Keep them coming. 👍👍👍👍
You fixed my Trio!!! I was befuddled by the rushed, higher-tempo rhythms I get after trying to teach the Trio in its learning mode. Now I get it. Already enjoyed the Trio, and now will enjoy it much more.

I'm definitely getting a looper pedal and later on this one. Thanks for all the info in you videos which is useful and entertaining.
Just got the trio up yesterday seemed easy from the start but this video was a great help. Thanks.
So glad i found your channel. You got yourself another subscriber immediately. Thank you for your selfless efforts to better our skills and knowledge. 😊

Really nice demo and explanation. You really touched on a lot of the complaints I've heard.
OK now I can start my Christmas list !!! Digitec always been one of my favorites !! Thanks for the review ,
Phil, this was a nice video man. Thanks for making it!
Thanks Phillip for this great tip. I have been playing with my Trio Plus but can never seem to get the correct drum and bass backing that I want. Your tip on thinking like bass player is fantastic and I will definitely try that.
Finally someone who understands building songs. I get it and I have one and I just learned a lot.

New Trio+ looks even better; can't wait to get one of them
+Mal Cooper I wanst sure what I thought of the $299 price tag other than that it looks amazing.
The ability to save 12 songs with sequenced 5 parts + recorded loops, 12 genres, to a memory card, makes it a lot more useful performing. At least I hope so.
It better look 6 times better.
Very cool, I just got one, I will try the scatting!

I got one at the beginning of last year, two thumbs up
Luv Ya Phil - another great video. BTW, thanks to you I bought a digitech trio.

hey phillip, great video as always!
can you make a video about the mesa boogie mark V:25?
Good review... Thanks for the tips.
One of my good friends mentioned this pedal when I was talking about loopers. He mentioned that it was "Band-In-a-box" in a pedal. I think this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the great review!
Good tips - thanks !!
If you get hold of the of the new ones with the built in looper, please do an updated review.
Great tip on how to use thx👍
Your videos are so informative. Please give us your thoughts on the Trio+ as well. :-)
Thanks for the video!
Love the trio plus.
Great review! What is the 3 button switch you recommend to buy at 7:04 in the video and why?
Good info how to use it correct.
Great 👍 vid - great demo - great Info- thanks

Really intelligent commentary that cuts to key issues and fundamental underlying "doh!!" moments. Thanks!
I bought one of these TRIO pedals last night and thought to myself...what the fuck did I just waste my money on, I just couldn’t get a decent rhythm...drums were either too fast or slow drawn out baselines then I watched your video and everything just fell into place!!!! you’re right it’s so simple when you think outside the box, thanks for that
Still love it in 2018? I feel you grasp this better than other reviewers
Nice review. Thanks :)
Enjoyed this video... may buy this or the trio plus... thank you!
would this pedal be practical to use in a live solo gig, has anyone tried to gig live with this. or could anyone recommend a similar pedal that is good for solo gigs I tried drum machines and it just sounds boring .The bass on this pedal is what has caught my attention
I wonder how you put overdrive on that guitar with the trio because it has no FX loop and when I put on overdrive it affects the Trio
Excellent video, does the bass player have tools strings an extra pick now and then, extra cords, and can it fix the PA if it goes down? the bass player is always that guy, Heh I'm gonna get one.
Trio works great.
Thanks a lot! That’s important.
I use a ZOOM G1 four in front of my Trio+... it has a looper that I use to make perfect musical motifs that the Trio+ eats up like M&M's... with a Digitech looper stationed after the Trio+, I can dub and overdub all night long...
How would you compare it to the beat buddy jr ($100). This is for practice at home only.
What is that silver guitar??!?
I like the thing for what it is. I'm not quite sure what the issues are that people are having with it.
Heh Phillip how about reviewing a EHX Lumberjack overdrive pedal. Fantastic sounds cheers Mick h
Tim. did you ever find out the recording lenght of the three parts?
Did you ever review the Godin XTSA?
If not would you please
Hey!!..it’s a fine learning tool from this century tech to help one enjoy & explore music plus your abilities to play your axe!!..(Bass/Guitar/Keys and even Wind instruments via Miking/Pick up attachment)
This is nice for Duo or Trio-Live (no pun intended)...using Acoustic or Electric Guitars!
The sound isn’t that bad from a PA system but the Trio+ version is much more versatile there.
You can really enjoy this pedal🎶✨🎛 once mastered and your looping skills should improve on it and other pedals!!..☝🏾
I enjoy using my Trio+ immensely!!..👍🏾🎶🎸🎛✨
Wondering if Digitech is gonna comeback with something else next/level killer!!..🤔
GREAT VIDEO...
can this be used with a keyboard?
Yes. I’m still partial to LIVE Drummer. Acoustic Drums have same Warmth as Tube amps. It’s that digital Snare, that sounds week.
That pedal seems like it could be a great tool for practicing.
with out a doubt
I noticed the sound quality is not as good when just played through a guitar amp. The Digitech demos run the pedal through a separate speaker system. Have you found that to be the case that the bass and drum sounds are not great through a guitar amp?
+kdrake777 I thought it sounded fine. I have a micro PA, but I felt it sounded fine. It would probably sound better through the effects loop, but again just didn't want to take the time since I thought it sounded fine.
Don't google image search scat!
dear lord, big mistake..... my innocence...
Joseph Bernard damn, that was a mistake, there are some sick puppies out there
Is the Trio Plus that much better than the original trio you demoing here?
Would I hire a punk band for a country gig? Absolutely, it'd be interesting and a mixing challenge!
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
This all seems fine if you are sitting around at home and just jamming, or maybe live if you are just going to play improvised pieces. I would love it if there was a way to go through a song (like on the video) and then record it to play back live at a gig. As it is now, it is just a toy, all be it an awesome one.
I once had a Digitech Trio + Band Creater, and I found that a Complete Nightmare!!
