Continuing in our Q and A series from Yohana Rodriguez, marketing intern with Butler Branding, she asks Sean "how would you define marketing in your own words?"
Many people confuse the terms branding, marketing, and advertising. In short, branding is influencing perception about a product, service or organization. Advertising is about increasing awareness (name recognition and getting the word out there). Marketing is about initiating a conversation. There are two primary forms of marketing: inbound and outbound. In this short video, Sean explains the difference.

Advertising is the process of bringing awareness of a product of service. For example, news papers, commercial, billboards. Marketing is very strategic process of targeting a particular group of people who you’d want to advertise to. For example, having athletic apparel/ gear being advertised on a sports network mostly or having flyers for a concert at a bar. Once again, advertising is just about bringing awareness meanwhile marketing is about targeting a certain group of people.
