I like the saying "Branding wants a Relationship; and Marketing wants a Transaction.", that seems to sum it up really well.
Absolutely... Analogies simplify 👍
If marketing is transaction, then what is Sales ?
How does this not have more likes? Thank you, Stephen, for your clear explanation and the value you bring forth in each of your videos.
You're very welcome
Branding is strategic, improving the goodwill on the balance sheet, while marketing is tactical, improving the P&L
The way I see it, advertising is about chasing the buck, marketing is about relationships and branding is about impresion.
Busy doing my brand strategy for uni, and this was extremely helpful in understanding the relationship between the two concept and their key difference
Great to hear 👍😀
Looks like there's just a thin line between branding and marketing. Loved that you mention that all marketing is a form of branding.
thank you 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
Great video! Thank you for making it clear that all Marketing is Branding but not all Branding is Marketing!
Glad it was helpful!
Love the thought provoking video and I am a fan of the content you put out into the world. Nonetheless I disagree with how you define marketing. Marketing should be the bridge from the customer to the sales function. That should include elements of strategy, market research, customer interviews and a whole lot more. Product development and product management can also be seen as marketing functions. Boiling down marketing to just the preparation for a sale is too narrow and only covers the end of the marketing process. One could argue that branding is a part of marketing, especially if a company has multiple brands and services. But I like your point that branding transcends transactions or individual functions, which is why I found the video so useful. Many thanks for your efforts!
Hi. Michael,
Get your point totally and I'm aware that my philosophy goes against the grain of traditional marketing
I believe brand has evolved beyond the sub-set of marketing it once was to encompass everything you have mentioned and more.
The brand is the living, breathing entity that represents the company.
From that perspective, how that entity is communicated, the products it offers and even the diversity of personnel within, all fall under branding.
(From my perspective)
Appreciate your perspective Michael 🙏
awesome, this gave me more clarity and helped articulate more of my thoughts.
Great to hear!👍👍👍
Just Subscribed only for the VALUE you shared and a made it so simple with the differences between both.👍👍
Cheers John 👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your contents are always of great value. I think everything you said in this video is correct. But I’d like to share with you another pov. That the main difference between the two is TIMING. Because, honestly, when I care about the relationship with the users and I nurture them through branding my end goals - in a biz contest - remain the sales as for mktg. So from this pov branding could be also seen as a long term mktg strategy. I would like to hear yours about it 😀
I partly agree... There are other considerations in branding beyond marketing (eg. customer support - diversity etc) Though in expressive terms, yes
nailed it!
Chris Lazaro 💪👍
I have a different understanding of branding. All marketing activities aren't branding. Paid ads with purchase as your conversion objective is not branding. It's sales. Branding is about sharing or expressing your brand's beliefs without expecting an immediate ROI.
When Coke does Coke Studio, they don't track how many bottles they sell through that music show, they're just trying to tell the consumer that Coke is cool. No expectations of immediate ROI. That's branding.
When Red Bull throws a guy from space, they don't track the video viewers and try to retarget them or sell them RedBull cans. They just want the prospect to know that RedBull = Adventure. NO IMMEDIATE ROI. That's branding.
When Gary vaynerchuk gives an hour long speech without trying to sell anything to the people, after the event ends, he's not looking for an immediate ROI, he's just building his brand.
That is why branding is so hard, it has no clear or immediate ROI.
Just my two cents.
The absence of an immediate ROI doesn't make it branding. Any attempt to influence the actions or perceptions of the consumer is branding.
Every single touchpoint is branding. From a paid ad to a sales call, immediate ROI or not... They're all messages from the brand, representing the brand...
We don't separate marketing and branding into black and white... they cross over. All Marketing is branding, but not all branding is marketing.
@@BrandMasterAcademy Of course, of course! The mere absence of immediate ROI doesn't make something branding.
But influencing the perception of prospects takes a long time, in my personal experience. So almost always while spending money on ads to promote your beliefs (to build your brand), you neither expect to see the return immediately nor are you able track the return as clearly as you would with sales campaign.
What do you think?
@@ammarkhan383 If they buy from your ad, you have influenced their behaviours and therefore their perceptions...
I understand your point, building a reputation takes time, but branding is always happening
@@BrandMasterAcademy
Makes sense 👍
Thanks for clarifying
Exceptional content
Much Appreciated!
Hmmm - the 4P's of marketing may disagree with you on the singular focus on promotion
branding to create loyal customers and marketing to create market and sales to closing the market
In a way yes
So my key takeaway from this video is that branding is more the expression of a brand through any touchpoint in which the brand speaks to the customer, not the creation, strategy, or design behind these expressions. Is that correct?
Branding is both the expression and development of the brand... It depends on the perspective... You're branding as a designer when you create a logo.... you're branding as a brand manager when you express your brand
@@BrandMasterAcademy One could also argue that branding extends into the world of product design, architecture and engineering. Because when you see the design of an iphone or mercedes benz, it initiates the relationship between the consumer and a brand and helps to create that emotional connection and sell the product. Its the first thing that comes to mind. Also, when people think about Paris, the Eiffel tower is the first thing that comes to mind so it helps people to identify and connect with that location as a travel destination
So all marketing, if done right, should consider branding best practices...and bad marketing would neglect branding best practices. Is that right, or am I oversimplifying?
It's possible to have successful marketing campaigns without much branding going on... but that's not a recipe for long term success... If you're not playing the long game and building the brand your wasting budget and opportunity
What does @Chris Do from @The Futur has to say about this?
how did you do it can you share with me , thank you
Can you elaborate on your question?
Man, do you have brands behind yourself with youtube channel? :)
This brand, agency brand, brands I've helped for 10+ years
I can not understand at all how you think branding is not a form of marketing.
Branding has evolved from the subset of marketing it used to be to the overarching discipline...
I dont view "branding as a form of marketing"
I view "marketing as an expression of branding"
