  • Are You Seriously Still Using Windows 7? Windows 7 has been out of support for over a year now. Its time to upgrade to Windows 10. Windows 7 was a great operating system but its time has passed. Its time to stop using Windows 7.

Joel Grigsby I agree, but thanks to some great videos from CyberCPU Tech you can easily get rid of all that crap. I actually now prefer a debloated Windows 10 over Windows 7. I have 8 computers and I was reluctant to switch 6 of which came with Windows 7 (one with 8). After upgrading my Windows 8 laptop to 10 and getting rid of all the crap (plus adding an SSD) it's lightning fast. It's boots in 5 seconds and shuts down in 4 seconds. I am in the process of upgrading all of my Windows 7 computers to 10 because it's secure and the laptops run much faster. It's quite simple to turn off all telemetry in Windows 10. Use PowerShell to uninstall all apps you don't want and you are set with a safer and faster computer.

As long as my web browser works, as long as my games work, as long as i have driver support, and as long as my computer WORKS, I won’t give into this. Also the reason the 98 pc got infected was because 98 had ping response enabled. 7 does not. Windows 10 doesn’t fully disable telemetry. Windows update is intrusive and forces you to update. Why can’t people leave us 7 users alone? It works for us. That’s all we need. We’re not running mission critical gov systems. And even those run XP in some cases

I’ve had the same experience on anything besides gaming or business hardware, I always considered Windows 7 ideal for computers made within the distant past but I just downgraded a lower specced laptop from 10 to 8.1 for a younger sibling since it was too new to even support 7 and noticed just as high of a performance boost actually. She wanted to play a game which has minimum requirements that borderlines the system performance of the laptop, it was barely playable under 10 but ever since downgrading she’s been bringing that laptop everywhere with her to play. No need to run it in a Linux distro through an emulation layer WINE and 8.1 is still new enough to support relatively modern functions meaning more app compatibility later down the line. It’s better than using 10 Enterprise LTSC, if you hate the Start Screen there’s always Classic Shell

Yes I still use Win 7 and I'll tell you why. It just plain works and gives me minimal headaches. My ten year old machine boots from dead off to operational in 45 seconds flat. I don't even bother to time Win 10 machines because I don't have that much time. If something screws up with Win 7 I can pretty much fix it easily. When Win 10 gets freaky seems that no one has any idea just wtf the machine is doing other than eating up all your resources, all those fixes out there well forget about them. Microsoft seems to have regressed to Win 95 days using their best fix, aw just reinstall the os. I have two Win 10 laptops that for the most part just sit in their cases. I don't know about you but there is nothing that Win 10 has that I want. I want to use my browsers, my search engines, my software and I don't want my computer up my butt snooping around like the NSA. Other than MS Word Microsoft has nothing to offer me, what they fill computers with is crap. The next step for me if forced to do so will be Linux. I wonder how much this guy makes from Microsoft?

Just so people know, in early 2020 I purposely downgraded my main PC to Windows 7 out of spite and I am still using it today with a full internet connection doing all my normal things and I've had no problems at all. Gaming, Disney+, UA-cam, online shopping, purchasing stocks, even bank management - I do that all the time too and have not had any issues with any of them or my PC.
As long as you make sure you have a sufficient (not free) AV & Firewall installed, you'll be completely fine. In the end, if you don't do that on a modern Windows system you'll get infected with viruses/backdoors anyway. Proves just how inefficient the security patches on Windows really are.
For those of you who say "You're very lucky", here's a couple of things to note:
1: If you knew what my life is like, you'd know I'm actually very unlucky with literally anything and everything. If there's a chance for bad luck for me to happen, it happens.
2: I know loads of other people who still use Windows 7 as their main OS, I even used to know some who purposely kept Windows XP several years after End of Life, none of them have had any problems either. Even my checkouts at work were on a full internet connection with Windows XP (which had no updates applied at all except SP3) until April 2021, none of them had issues either in terms of security (except reliability, since those machines were dying).
In short: It's all scaremonger. As long as you take relevant steps to protect your PC, you have no reason to worry.

@@CyberCPU I think you'll find you have tonnes of customers with issues on any operating system. That isn't necessarily related to being end of life, I too work with computers and have done for a lot of years, but sometimes it's easy to let too much "professionalism" weigh you too far towards the facts rather than considering the reality. Most people who are PC illiterate because they don't know what is safe to click on will end up getting infected with malware, spyware or in some cases ransomware even on Windows 11. Same as they will on Windows 10 or Windows 7, because yes some PCs are indeed less secure than others, but in the end one thing you should know with 20+ years experience is the weakest link is always the user, not the PC itself.
Also I actually have quite a few friends who use Windows 7 as their daily OS still, not as many as Windows XP back in 2016/2017, but that's because most Windows XP hardware can't really be upgraded to newer Windows, so they had no choice but to stick with it at the time. Just because it's FACTUALLY incorrect that Windows 7 can be safe to use taking the right precautions/setting up the right security solutions in 2022 doesn't always make it incorrect in reality. You should know by now factual doesn't always line up with reality. Just because we use Windows 7 today does not mean we have to be "infested with viruses and don't realise" because we've been connected to the Internet. Nor does it mean my identity "will" get stolen. I've been using Windows 7 as my daily driver for 2 years straight and with how often I'm constantly entering and saving sensitive information into the computer, especially online banking/paying off credit cards and purchasing/selling stocks, I promise you if I was seriously infected with malware, spyware, keylogged & whatever, I would be obliterated by now.
Actually if we're going to be talking about "facts" can I just ask where you get your information from in regards to "I don't know a single antivirus that still supports Windows 7"?? Norton, Avast, AVG, ZoneAlarm, Avira and as far as I can tell EVERY antivirus out there apart from McAfee still supports Windows 7. Even then McAfee still supported Windows 7 at the time this video was uploaded.
Same as printers, I've looked at my local PC store's list of printers for sale and EVERY single one of them is compatible with Windows 7 and newer, even the one I bought a month ago works perfectly. Same as every single game I play, even on Steam is compatible with Windows 7. Yes eventually all of these things will change, just like it did for Windows XP and then you'd have to look for old stock products and older versions of software (which is when you really ought to be concerned about security), but honestly it feels like you should have uploaded this video with these facts in 2025 and not 2021, since they're all very ahead of their time and not valid yet.
Also, the whole "someone connected a Windows 98 machine to the internet and left it idle and it got super infected because it was out of support" is utter nonsense. Yes, it will have been insecure if they didn't even take any steps to protect it on the internet, as you should do with any PC not just an out of support one, but turning it on, plugging in an ethernet cable and leaving it will not be why it was infected unless maybe they were connected to a public network (which is a massive security risk in itself).
Of course I understand the issues surrounding end of support operating systems, just I don't take it quite as seriously with Windows like I do macOS or Linux because Windows has a bad track record for security holes/widespread infections of malware of different categories that have been combated mostly using 3rd party security solutions, which almost all are still available today.

I still use Windows 7 on my main and its because it works. It's faster, more streamlined. Basic settings aren't hidden behind several layers of menus with conflicting UIs. The start menu doesn't display advertising in a confusing sea of tiles. It's the most stable version of Windows ever, and all programs and games I use still support or at least run on 7. In fact, many programs I use are unstable and buggy on 10 and have no alternatives. Also since we're apparently making comparisons to completely different versions of Windows, Microsoft released security patches for a critical exploit on XP, 5 YEARS after the end of support. And don't even try to deny 7 looks better than that flat, bland ui of 10

Imagine if at your place of employment you worked for one day and they paid you for that day but then expected you to work forever after that for free. Would that be fair?
Microsoft released Windows 7 in 2009. They supported it for 11 years. Windows 7 was under support after the release of Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10. During that time they had to have an entire development team continue to work on updates for Windows 7. A developer probably makes at average 100k to 180k a year. Microsoft operates with different teams. Windows 7 development had 23 teams and on each team there was about 40 people. That's a total of 920 people. Granted long-term support probably doesn't need that many people so let's just say it takes 100 developers to keep Windows 7 in support. Based on the average software developers income that would be between 10 to 18 million dollars a year to keep Windows 7 in support. An operating system that's four generations old that Microsoft is making absolutely no money on.
It's extremely expensive to provide long-term support for an operating system. So we can't expect Microsoft to just continue to support an operating system indefinitely. The 11 years that Microsoft supported Windows 7 cost them on a low average about an eighth of a billion dollars. I totally understand why they would end support.

Software support is actually primarily why I'm not updating from 7. Modern "software" doesn't actually function anymore, instead taking your wallet hostage to grant you temporary access to features you previous could get for free whenever you wanted. I'm not trying to scam myself and "upgrade" to being able to use the same software I already use only temporarily and for hundreds or thousands of times the cost. For the most part, newer software is repackaging old things to scam users out of money, not allowing the user to do new things they previously could not.
In addition, some vital software I use every day in my professional workflow is not compatible with newer OSs, rather than the other way around like people want to claim. More modern Windows actually has tons of compatibility issues with software that previously worked just fine.
In addition in addition, Windows 10's background OS update system actually often breaks major portions of its software and is one of the worst parts of the OS. The worst part is, if something does break from the OS updating on its own, fixing it is completely outside of your control. You just have to wait until they update it again to get your computer out of a completely preventable hostage situation. I need my computer to work consistently every single day, so Windows 10 is exactly the opposite of usable for me.

There's a lot of fear mongering in this video. You can't compare windows 98 to windows 7. That's actually dumb as hell.
Most users are also using a modern web browser like Google Chrome. Chrome is very good at stopping threats. It's not perfect (nothing is) but it's very good. Also, don't underestimate a users ability to surf the web safely. Surfing the web safely is KEY to having a virus/malware/spyware free PC along with a modern web browser (like google chrome). I've seen plenty of windows 10 pc's with viruses and malware on them having all the protection and updates in the world isn't going to save you from your poor web browsing and poor judgement.
I'm using Windows 7 with modern hardware and it's a blast. Intel 9900K, 16gb of Gskill 3200mhz ram, RTX 3080, Samsung 970pro NVMe (512gb for OS) Samsung 970 evo plus 1TB (for steam games) and a samsung 1tb 860 sata ssd for old games or storage.
Games run super smooth, no bloatware, no forced updates, no stupid windows app store, and very reliable.
Most modern games still work perfectly on Windows 7. League of Legends, Final Fantasy 14, Shadow of the tomb raider, Resident Evil 2/3 remakes, Skyrim with tons of mods, etc etc. I think even Cyberpunk works too since it has its own Directx12 update (allowing you to use Raytracing and such).

Windows 10 has only a year left till it gets EOL'ed, I personally cannot stomach Windows 11, and I have no motivation to "upgrade" from Win7. Yes, there are apps that no longer support Windows 7, but they all run on MacBooks just as well, and svelte little M1 laptops have gotten very affordable lately...

It would have worked fine on my older PC, but puhlease, they just won't leave you alone, spyware, this tracker, that tracker, the bloatware, it was both slow and intrusive. Windows 8 was worse. Yes, there are still folks using Windows 7 today, but not for PC's being released now, now the hardware is no longer supported. Windows 7 has its problems, too, but they just can't leave good enough alone. Tbh going with 8.1 seems like a pretty attractive option. 8.1 is pretty much 7 with Metro apps and a weird Start menu. it still gets security updates, and it's somewhat leaner and faster since MS needed it to run on tablets. if you can get over the lack of a classic Start menu and tune the Start screen to better fit your workflow, it can really work out (or you can just install a third party replacement). What I did was clear pretty much the entire screen and just put in tiles for the apps I always work with. My Thinkpad came with an OEM license for 8.1 Pro and tbh I kinda like it and don't really understand all the hate. Definitely don't sleep on 8.1.

*I'm NOT here to hate at all, here to have an opinion, PLEASE don't take it the wrong way*
Everyone seems to make EOL a big deal, it's not.
    Here's my views:
    • If you're smart.
    • If you have an antivirus
    • if your browsers still up to date
    • all your programs are supported
By all means, if you don't care about games support, use it.
One thing I have to agree on is bank info, if you do banking, for the LOVE OF GOD DO NOT USE WINDOWS 7.
    Anyway back to my rant.
    Also here's another thing:
    • Most stuff has been patched ALREADY.
    • Microsoft still technically does push updates to Windows 7 if it's really needed. (PrintNightmare)
    • web browsers still support windows 7
I'm not stupid, alot of people who use it excluding a small percentage aren't stupid.
Also, some antiviruses *still do support windows 7, and have said they *plan to support it for a LONG TIME.*
Windows Update is really the last layer of security, if it gets past your antivirus, your web browser, then you can't expect it even on windows 10 to protect you.
You also have to realize that Windows 10 has a ton of bloat, tracking, and other crap they really didn't need.
    The reason people are staying on 7 is probably one of the following reasons;
    • No bloatware.
    • No windows update shoved down your face every time your in the middle of something (EVEN THOUGH YOU PAUSED UPDATES WINDOWS FEELS THE NEED TO DO IT ANYWAY)
    • how disorganized things are..
    - control panel, settings
    - snipping tool, snip and sketch..
    Like there's SO MANY DUPLICATES.
One thing I've noticed is I have to use control panel and settings for two different things and its just annoying.
    • no Microsoft account crap every 5 seconds.
    • no let's browse 7000 results on bing and try to find something your not looking for
    • you don't get notifications saying "sWitCh tO eDgE.
Listen, I like windows 10, I dualboot it with 7, but for the love of God, windows update has pissed me off so many times and interrupted me even with pro.. it's ridiculous, I can't get work done without a constant switch to edge message or ads in my start menu.
When I need things done, I boot into 7 and it just WORKS.
I guess that's another big reason is that it just works.
Like I said, I like windows 10, I like the features, the new stuff, the coveted windows update, it's all cool but nothing beats Windows 7.
Now if I was using this 5 years down the line from now it would be an issue.
I know program support is going down the drain in a few years.. but I know that AV's will support operating systems for more than 20 years and almost 7 past EOL.
And I guess, if you want to brave the wilderness that is EOL, then go for it.
That's what I'm doing, I do have to agree with you though, if you aren't the best with tech, just bite the bullet and move.
Ain't worth the risks if your not tech savvy.
But for the few who like windows 7, don't care for gaming and don't use it for banking, I don't see a real problem.
Anyway I do agree with most of your points.. but for people who know what they're doing it's not really an issue to stay on Windows 7.
Also saw that after you used windows 10 the feeling of going back just felt ancient.
I guess I feel differently, I really just feel windows 7 fits my needs and that's really where Microsoft should have stopped.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому +2

Most valid points. I have seen that Google has announced end of support for Windows 7 in chrome. I'm not sure when it is but it's soon. Also most AV programs actually have ended support. They are still providing definition updates for the currently supported version on Windows 7 but new versions of the perspective antiviruses will not support Windows 7. Ether way I have always used security essentials because it was the lightest weight antivirus for Windows 7. I hear that MS is actually still pushing out definitions for it. I didn't know that was the case when I made the video.
I was surprised that MS patched the print spooler. That's a good thing.
In regards to users. As a tech that mostly helps people who are not computer savvy, there are tons of people still on Windows 7. I would say far more people that don't know what they are doing then people who do.

You can install Windows 7 and close all ports to the internet in your firewall and only allow traffic to programs you use like steam or whatever. Performance is much better in Windows 7 vs Windows 10. Windows 10 only runs well on new hardware and not everybody has three or four grand to dump on new hardware. I'm not recommending loading a Windows 7 machine with your most precious files and conducting financial transactions on it. However if you just want to game and consume media on older hardware then Windows 7 is definitely faster and more stable then Windows 10. That's just the facts.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому +3

I upgrade several old computers a week to Windows 10 and it runs really well on older hardware. If the argument is just based on performance then why not run Windows 98? Windows 98 runs way better than Windows 7 on older hardware. At some point we have to have a line and that line should be security.
You don't need thousands of dollars to build a fast Windows 10 computer. I proved that recently with my E-Waste gaming PC that I built for $200 with used parts and Windows 10. With every upgrade I did to that computer it ran even better and I never spent more than a couple hundred dollars on an upgrade. The big upgrades to that system are coming soon but the way it sits right now I have less then 1k into it and it runs great in Windows 10.
In regards to stability I don't see a stability problem with Windows 10 and I work on hundreds of computers. In fact I'm actually starting to see more and more stability issues with Windows 7 the further it gets out of support.

An example: tracking your every move and sending it to Microsoft every second. I guess in the end it comes down to preference. Would you rather take a risk that some hacker will snoop in your private data on Windows 7, or choose 10 where you can be certain your private data is at risk. I won't disagree with you. The average non-savvy computer person should definitely stay up to date with their OS. However if you're honest you know as well as I do that the trade-offs to privacy it's pretty startling. I gave in and now i use windows 10 But after all this time I still hate it with a passion.
Setting menus inside of setting menus to find what you are looking for, Bloatware and spyware deluxe, Broken updates that will install randomly by themselves often completely bricking the whole OS resulting in reinstalling it or repairing and trying to fix it for hours, shit layout for pc's since it is a mix of touchpad and a pc interface or some stupid shit like that.
Fuck all that im going back to windows 7 again the only thing that scares me is the lack of support and updates making it "more vurnerable to viruses and attacks" But reading comments it's not something i should really worry about unless i myself do something stupid like with any other OS, And using windows 10 is like installing a big ass virus to begin with.
So im taking my chances and I'm finally going back home. 😳

I still run Win7 on my main PC. As insecure as it may be, there's still software I use that doesn't yet run on newer versions of Windows or WINE running on linux. I have adjusted all the security settings possible within windows and I even use a standard non-admin account with more aggressive UAC settings enabled.
I certainly understand the risks I am taking here by running 7, but for what I do, Win10/11 just wouldn't work. So in the meantime until I figure something else out, I'll continue running Win7, but minimising the risks where possible.

My current laptop is a dual boot with 7 and 10. I have started to really enjoy 10 recently, been using it more than Windows 7, but I enjoy 7 too much to fully give it up (thus the dual boot). I still boot into 7 since apps I enjoy still work and I want to use it as much as possible before they don't, but 10 has grown on me a lot after the 10 years where I couldn't run anything but Windows 7. And now Windows 11 is coming out soon so I'll have to get used to that once I build my own gaming PC in the future.
