Guys, Chris Titus Tech has a channel which is mostly focused on Linux (these days, it didn't start that way). He has a gaming series, people who are interested in gaming on Linux might want to check it out.
Aimela, new Linux users will get used to it fast as long as they don't have too much software which requires Windows. Windows 10 is basically Windows 8.1 with a different UI. It runs a lot more smoothly than 7. Haven't had any problems with any games or software, even stuff that was difficult to run in 7. Not sure why everyone is so resistant.
@@juansolo1617 - I beg to differ. It is a complete upgrade and change from Windows 10. I know people who worked on BOTH.
@@ernies8828 People need to be more specific with their gripes. I have a few cheap servers running Windows 10 that haven't been shut down in over a year and are still running great, even without updates. All settings are customizable, although it is easier with Win10 Pro, there are 3rd party software that make it a little easier, or you can edit the registry... but they've been improving settings adjustment consistently. As far as backward compatibility, I can run Diablo 2 without any tweaks to anything. Just click and run. Many of us went into modified 10, like Ghost Edition, with removed bloatware, disabled telemetry and so on.
Personally for me a different user interface was the hardest switch. Mix of Win 8 and 10 would look better than a plain 10. But TBH, Microsoft should add all of there themes into 10. I believe that many users seeing Win7 theme at the begging would be more interested in switching to 10. Me included. I did my switch only to have better Ambilight and game performance.

All the reasons to abandon windows 7 were artificially created by microsoft.
The only thing wrong with windows 7 is that microsoft refuses to give the newest security and features from win10 because it doesn't suit their "grand plan", whatever it is.
Windows XP compared to Windows 7 is incompatible with most features, but microsoft can easily make win7 have all the good features of win10 if they wanted to.

@EJSC I've ran Windows10 for over a year now, and I haven't experienced "laggy" or "awful mouse input" at all. I love that I can play DX12 games also. Only thing that really bothers me is that the updates decide to install whenever they fucking want. Aside from that, it's really not that bad of a OS, and that's coming from a day 1 adopter of Windows 7.
@EJSC
You are forgetting the endless data collecting of everything you do (even private folders). Sure you can opt out but some data is still collected. You can spend hours using user tweaks to disable all the garbage but apparently w10 can override your settings so you will always be required to monitor it. W10 updates also have been know to default all your privacy settings or flat out override tweaks/changes in registry. W10 sounds like a pain in the ass if you want personally freedom.
The fact that China called bs (China the most data collecting place on the planet) and now have a W10 China version that is free of data collecting.....Is somewhat scary.

Also as the end of updates goes, I couldnt care less, I stopped installing any of those after windows reinstall long time ago and it doesnt affect your system in any way, we could consider it a bloatware lol.. until that moment when chrome or firefox has an update and the installer says your OS isn't compatible (which might actually happen sooner than you think, windows xp was a good example of that), in that case most will start upgrading to windows 10 except for enterprise users.

“1 year until windows cuts it off”
Uploaded 2 years ago and my windows 7 works fine
I'd love someone to do a video based around "is using an unsupported windows version THAT dangerous?" to finally answer a question that has bugged me for a LONG time - from the everyday users perspective, is it REALLY like night-and-day stuff when it comes to security updates once an OS "dies" .... or would you actually not really notice any difference for a long time, if ever??
Everyone makes it seem like the moment security updates stop, every single person still using the now "dead" OS will suddenly have their computer hacked or hijacked by viruses, malware and ransomware. I'd love to know what the likelihood of that ACTUALLY occurring is, and whether it's been really blown out of proportion in order to just "scare" us into upgrading our operating systems or if there actually is any truth to this ... at all.
I might be able to answer this I have a game server running xp home edition it’s been running none stop since call of duty come out on pc in the early 2000’s it’s had no issues from hackers or virus it was online till a month ago when it was taken offline for hardware updates and cooler fans to be replaced again(noisy bearings) how ever after all these years it’s been no problems with is updates it did its last ones and has been running fine since.
I still use Windows 7 on my main computer and 10 on my work computer. I barely notice a different and I haven't had any security issues. Been thinking about upgrading lately just to stop being told I should upgrade.
I'd say if know what you're doing and don't visit sketchy websites, click random pop-ups, delete spam e-mails immediately, etc. If you're smart enough to take basic precautions, then you should be fine. Always have your anti-virus and anti-malware running and up-to-date. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 machines that both get regular use. Of course, I don't surf the web on my XP because I don't need to, but I still use the Internet on my 7.
The only time I've ever gotten a virus was when I was being a dumbass (visiting websites that offered "free" software downloads). Luckily I was able to defeat it, thanks to Safe Mode and Malwarebytes. 🙂
I refuse to listen to the alarmists that try to scare people into upgrading their OS because of "muh security risks". I understand system vulnerabilities, but as long as I keep my anti-virus definitions up-to-date, I should be good, right?
I'm still using my abacus. The only anti-virus I need is termite repellant.

Surely making an OS we actually like would be more profitable.
Cannot wait for the, Windows Not Shit Edition.
Oh who are we kidding 11 would just be as bad thats why they want us on 10 so they can claim we love all the W10 BS and ramp it up for 11 as "Its what the consumer wants" sneaky but I wouldnt put it past M$
Of course, not. Maximizing ad clicks via / in OS - that's what's more profitable
It actually wouldn't be. That's the problem that's put us where we are today. 2010 thru 2020 proved that making a system largely out of user control is totally more profitable. Saved costs from one platform to support only + enhanced ability to view any data in the cloud to be analyzed at will + devs have to share percentages of their sales with MicrosoftStore/PlayStore/iTunes. Waywayway more money to be made in the cloud methodology - so local hardware is dying. It's actually NOT profitable to give the user what they want.
The problem is that we are not the market for windows. Gamers/power users are a small minority. most windows users are either businesses/organisations or just your average person with a laptop. They don't really care about the features or data collection and actually like the non-customisable plug-and-play nature of windows 10.
Wont happen with Windows, sadly....
my school computers decided to upgrade to windows 10 when windows 7 support ended, and it was a version from 2015
some computers did have the latest windows 10 but most computers which used to run windows 7 turned into a very old windows 10, that if i'm not mistaken, is STILL isn't supported.
To come back and answer this question three years later. Nothing. Absolutely nothing happens when Windows 7 'dies'. As long as you're using it with era-appropriate hardware and don't care about software updates. I'm still using it on my main computer.
So you are saying 98se is still the best option?

I'm fine with Windows 7 until my current pc dies. Then it's on to Linux Mint, already using it on my laptop because Windows 7 is compatible with it. It works great, smooth and flawless. Zero bloatware. Zero ads trying to sell me apps. Zero tracking and harvesting my data.
And you could use something else if mint is not appealing; there's some pretty neat desktop environments out there, some even mimicking windows xp or even 98, if you're into that

And here we are today, 18 months away from Windows 10's end of support, while Windows 11 is artificially incompatible with PCs before 2018.
I've been saying it for years: Windows 10 is the best advertisement for Linux ever made.
@Ahnaf Habib a bad os,don't try it!
No, it's not a bad OS, it's just different than what Windows or MAC users are used to. There's a bit of a learning curve. The only place where there's a problem is with gaming, but even that is changing now, and quickly.
As for it being a kernel or OS... Yeah, sure, technically the OS is considered GNU/Linux, but even pedants understand that when somebody says Linux on its own, they're generally referencing the entire OS. In almost all cases, when somebody speaks of the kernel they say so explicitly...
MrDrakkus what’s the kernel?
@@S0uLGamin
The kernel is the core of any Operating System. It's the bit that tells the hardware what the software wants it to do. Kind of like a translator.

Damn.
Yeah, widows 8 had no reason to exist, they should have just supported windows 7 for like 6 years before then even thought about building another OS. But every time they make a new version of windows that's more money for them regardless if the OS is good or not.
Exactly, it's like they're really going for 10 now. 10 or nothing, shame.

I was one of the lucky ones. I won a House Party and a Windows 7 Ultimate Box. I actually held a launch party at my house. Besides a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Signature Edition it came with some really cool stuff for the guests I had over. The biggest this was a FREE one year license to Kaspersky Internet Security. Now I wouldn't touch that internet security with a 10 foot pole today and not to mention I have been using Bit Defender since 2006, it was still pretty cool to hand out all the extras that came in the Windows 7 launch box. They even put party streamers in it, Balloons, Playing Cards, Napkins, Tote Bags, and a bunch of discounted software. I loved Windows 7, and every OS before it even Vista. I HATE Windows 8 and 8.1. I waited to do the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and love 10 now. I am building another new PC in the next couple of days and I am anxiously waiting Windows 11 release.

@@rogerh.5792 Vista went into transformation mode, came out a butterfly (Win 7).
@@TechyBenYep, a surprising number of people forget that the actual experience between Vista SP2 and Win 7 at launch was actually really similar. For the most part Vista struggled at launch due to it being bundled with just straight up to weak computers (512mb ram is a dreaded example) and companies that were just not ready to transition from the old NT core to the new one as far as drivers were concerned.
If it wasn't for the lack of steam support on it as of January I would have no issues using it on my secondary machine (it's set up with all my older games and emulators).
Another option is having a linux virtual machine for internet + windows 7 host for games, MS Office, Photoshop, etc.
This setup can run pretty well on modern-ish computers with SSD and 8+ GB of memory, Linux itself actually uses not a lot of it.
.
Modern VMs can be quite unintrusive, and additional isolation means no viruses. You can firewall host machine through guest one bridging physical network to the guest, and setting up IP host address to only network through the guest one - this is fairly secure for home and office use even if host is insecure, although VM software itself will need to be updated. It is theoretically very possible but fairly unlikely in reality that insecure host will compromise a secure guest, unless you are specifically targeted by a skilled attacker.
.
Or if you can afford it, using old gaming PC or notebook as internet-only linux workstation, and a modern PC with either win7 or win10 for gaming. Who cares if win10 steals your save-game data or loses a few minutes of your progress since last autosave? Or even is infected with virus (as long as you have 2-factor auth on credit cards tied to steam).
.
I'm typing this from a very old linux PC and it runs great (well except that the last youtube "upgrade" made its oldness to really show, but the OS is fine). If your hardware manufacturer really actually supports linux it's fairly easy to set up and learn, otherwise you might either need to get help setting it up, or learn some useful sysadmin skills.
5:50 except for the fact that they sacrificed post-boot speeds for boot times, this is especially noticeable on a hdd. On windows 10 the icons aren’t even loaded after boot, and so is the taskbar. Windows 7, instead, loads everything after boot, and does it quicker compared to windows 10, based on the programs and apps loading.

Exactly this, and what Linus doesn't seem to grasp (and what MS doesn't want users to realize) is that Windows 7 has had the best minds in the world trying to hack it and then those hacks being patched out for literally 10 years. Millions of man hours in total I am sure. At this point the odds of finding an unpatched vulnerability in Windows 7 are something like winning the lottery, it is possible, but extremely unlikely. Furthermore, if you browse with a modern browser with an up to date antivirus like Avast and Ublock Origin, your odds of picking up a virus or malware or ransomware are vanishingly small. If you are effective at detecting phishing attacks, you are probably good to stick with Windows 7 until some killer app comes out for Windows 10. If you are like me, at that point, you clone your drives and build a new system, because your hardware is obsolete anyway, and you have the benefit of your windows 7 machine being available as a backup for some years until the capacitors croak or some such.
