- I've always thought free VPN's sucked. There always missing important features and the features they do include are limited. They where slow and only worked at lower speeds. However, recently I tried Proton VPN and it actually doesn't suck. The free version is missing some pretty big features but its not as bad as you might think.

Proton as an ecosystem is well worth paying the monthly fee for with how nice everything works and how E2EE private it all is. Proton VPN's payed tier is wonderful, so many country choices.
YOU CAN SPECIFY THE COUNTRY. You may have missed the bottom left portion of the Proto VPN. You can set your specific country where the VPN resides by using the bottom left menu.
Great video... Which leads me to a request... Can you do a video on UA-cam slowing down and lagging badly when using ad blockers?
Thats interesting - I have not noticed any lag when running ad blockers or VPN... maybe your ISP setting are messing about with your supply? I'm in Spain, (Jetnet) on a 2Mb feed, but totally unlimited. I DL about 20GB per day, ish. I occasionally get issues with ad blockers, but not often - and certainly not speed issues. Can you expand? I fix PC's as a side hustle and no doubt this will be an issue at some point... I know 2Mb is very slow (I was on 24Mb in 2004 in UK!!!) but its reliable and unlimited - so I stick with it.
Yup, having issues here too with a low internet speed. Oddly, using Brave is pretty good and doesn't cause any lag issues, but I don't like some things that Brave comes with, particularly the scrolling is just awful
Well, all VPNs mostly suck. Instead of giving up everything you do to some random guy, you give it up to some specific guy and hope that they won’t f everything up because of incompetence or malevolence. Or both.
The only fine thing to use VPN for is to securely connect to remote resources, like home or office network, from whatever you are.

If you do get this do note that some games for their online multiplayer mode(s) uses that peer to peer system as bit torrents do so you may get blocked going in online games
you use vpn for adult online games and or privacy download only

I had to quit vpn because I'd get throttled from, let's say, a 300mgb speed dl to 98mgb dl speed. When you're gaming mp_ multiplayer, that is IRRATIONAL. So, I sure hope they have gotten better, in the intervening years.
@@opsvixen Did you try turning secure core off while gaming? SC can slow things down somewhat, although it obviously provides more security.

For me the inability to specify the country the VPN server is in is kind of a deal breaker. I use a handful of free browser VPN plugins where I have more control over this.

Been using Proton free version for a few years now, it can run slow when a lot of people jump on it, i have it installed on 2 of my desktop computers ,and i think that's okay ,as long as only one is in use at a time ,and i think you can do that with up to 3 machine's.
That's the issue with free VPN's like Proton. Premium users take priority so once that traffic gets filled the free peasants will be thrown on the potato servers.
I've been using Bitdefenders VPN as part of my premium package and the difference in speed is night and day.
Proton is probably the best free option that being said.

@@opsvixen My base internet speed is pretty poor, so I don't even see the point in paying for a premium service to still only get pretty poor internet speeds. (poor = less than 8MB/s, and it has been as low as 0.26MB/s without VPN)

It was OK to start with, but now I can't find a way to choose a free server, as it now just connects me to the fastest.
Question. I have 2 locations. My house and my shop .25 miles away as thycrow flies. Tried a point to point but trees are too thick, signal shit. I have gig fiber at house but if p2p connects I only get about 8mb connection. I am about ready to buy cheap plan for the shop. The question is, 2 locations, multiple computers, 2 ip’s. I want each location to have their own ip. Routers have open vpn built in. I also pay for NordVPN. Can you give me an idea how to connect securely the 2 locations? Something in my paid nordvpn?

I have it on my phone and its very slow. It has only one server and it always flashes a time upgrade to a pro version. I have not tried it on a PC.

Well then you would have to use the Opera browser, one of the worst browsers ever created, especially when it comes to security. Try Brave, you'll be happy you did, if security and anonymity are your concerns. Plus if you are a student it still works with Chrome compatible labs. Great for students in the Cisco Network Academy. Just finished my CCNA classes through them. 97.4%
Seems to have rather significant limitations. But that often applies to many VPNs.

13 hours worthy of recommendation, based on a true story well worth the watch, ill be trying out this vpn and mentioning it to my customers.
Being from the UK I have been using Proton for years on my fire stick since free streaming apps from the US tend to have better content than we get here. It doesn't tend to work on paid steaming services unless you pay for a subscription to it but it is still way better than others.

Yes, but you can't pick countries with the free version. That's only for a premium account.

Proton was great for free tier but they just changed it where split tunneling no long works and you cant choose your location it randomly chooses which makes it unusable for geo specific

@@deebee201 no your def not lol you can get around it afew ways tho by connecting straight to their servers (havent actually tried but should work) or on linux if you get an older version in the package manager and then lock the updates (have tried is working for now)

You are seriously limited with countries if you're on free. Is that a deal breaker? Well, that depends on where you are and if you want the control to switch to whatever country you want.
566 mbps is a dream here in Italy. You have to be very happy if you get 56,6 mbps 😢
Welp it's sucks now...Before, you can use lots of free line from 4 countries...Now you can't. All you can do is click quick connect and it connect you to a random country..

i wouldn't rely on them not keeping logs. We have these new-ish intelligence laws that make it possible for certain authorities in certain circumstances to force online service providers like proton to give them data/access and remain silent about it.
I use proton on my fire stick for my occasional movie viewing it works great.

I know its unassociated, but I need to know - so - Windows 10? How long do we have until it expires? and Win 11 - I have one system running it unactivated, If its £20 - fine - I'll buy a licence. But I'm more concerned about my older laptops running Win 10... are they going to die a mean and nasty death?
Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. However, this does not mean that computers running Windows 10 will stop functioning after this date. After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer update Windows 10 and therefore any system running this operating system will become more susceptible to security breaches.

Like other commenters, I've been using Proton VPN Free for a couple of years now -- starting in 2018, I believe.
I'm not a rabid consumer of streaming service content (e.g. Netflix). And I've never used a torrent site. So these disadvantages don't affect me.
I use a VPN mainly for when I use public Wi-Fi (e.g. coffee shops, public libraries, and airport terminals) to do work. So for me, Proton VPN Free fits my needs quite well. The down- and upload speeds are sufficient for sending/receiving large client graphics files (I'm a freelance graphic designer) when I use public Wi-Fi.
I have Proton VPN Free on my laptop, secondary laptop, Android tablet, and Android phone. However, I can only use one device at a time.

ive been using this gem for years, now i found it suspicious when my account now doesnt allow me to select the country(happened about 5 days ago), then i came on yt and found a video basically this(promo in a sense). Lol i think they hv now gotten more looks n decided to pull the best feature they hv basically forcing an upgrade, no can do tho

@@asifkarimratul522 you get spied on either way. If not from your browser then from the websites you visit. The only way to truly be private is to stop using the internet.
What I do is a balance between privacy and convenience. I use chrome because it's convenient and the private concerns are outweighed by the convenience it provides. Also, Google's going to get my info whether I use Chrome or not.

The way you did it you were testing using a local server when non vpn and a Texas server when using vpn. Gotta account for the transit time to Texas.
Then again , I guess practically people just want to know their performance hit using vpn.
Can I suggest an idea for your content. Elon Musk is complaining that windows has to have an Online account and install AI for windows to work on a new Laptop. He then complains that the community notes who say it can be done are wrong.

It's still possible to bypass a Microsoft account. As far as I know, the video I did on it still works fine.
It's not the Idea the VPN sucks or not it is the fact, DO they Actually keep your info private, AKA Is it Private from Everyone, or if the Legal system needs info from it, does that VPN actually keep that info that they shouldn't be, otherwise Why say you are Private, when using it. Then you have to know just how many servers are available for you to use, or do they pack as many people on one as they can, thus really slowing stuff down.

That 500 MBps comes at a steep cost. I have the same speed at home and pay $100 per month and it's a "promo" price. The regular cost is $200 per month. The provider is Optimum/Cablevision.

I used the free version for awhile, but at that time their severs got overwhelmed, So I just purchased the paid version. Been okay for the past couple of years. I'm sure their are better VPN services, but I haven't looked. If anyone knows of a better and cheaper one...please let me know. Thanks gang and take care everyone.

You keep saying "megabyte per second" but it's "megabits per second" unless you have some awesome internet service that no other typical home user can get yet. Megabyte (MB) ≠ megabit (mb), 1 byte = 8 bits therefore 1 megabyte = 8 megabits.

@@-T--T-I use a separate modem that I own. I don't use an ISP modem. They are not expensive. However, I just haven't bothered upgrading mine because I get 500Mbp off the one I have. 800Mbp would be great but I hardly think I would notice the difference. 🤣😂
Maybe an unpopular opinion these days, but most people would do more than fine on 100Mbps. Of course if you are many in the household sharing the connection, you might want to get something faster.

I am an old tech. I remember setting up my own VPN on my Server at home, the features were included in Windows. Back when Windows was an operating system, not an advertising dispenser.

@@johnniequinn3215 Windows NT and Windows 2023 were the servers I dealt with. Windows XP, 98 and 7 logging onto the server. VPN used to be a feature of Windows networking. IPSEC was another Security tool I used, but it slowed down Server access.

Cable (coax) internet is usually slower in upload speeds than fiber. The same is true for 4G and 5G.
Companies always give a slower upload speed. It's stupid, but that's how they make money.
@@jamesyoung151 very few people need that fast of an upload speed. By keeping the infrastructure primarily dedicated to download speed they're able to offer you a lower bill. If they raised the upload speed they would have to drop the download speed in 99% of customers would never know the difference.

It is not random. With a free account users can choose which server they want to connect to from 3 different countries(US,NL,JP).
Proton Free officially sucks now.
I just got my version rolled with the dreaded 'quick connect/no other servers' just today. Can't connect to get to a game. Sincerely, not the first thing I wanted to wake up to. I'm not even going to try to wonder in what way Proton did this to av01d cr0vvding, since that's all part of the [free] plan. I could always get to a jp server no problem, but we're now tied to a russian roulette / connect policy that primarily ties you down to local?
That's nice and all for local privacy, but it really blows actually connecting elsewhere.
