YOU CAN SPECIFY THE COUNTRY. You may have missed the bottom left portion of the Proto VPN. You can set your specific country where the VPN resides by using the bottom left menu.
If you do get this do note that some games for their online multiplayer mode(s) uses that peer to peer system as bit torrents do so you may get blocked going in online games
I had to quit vpn because I'd get throttled from, let's say, a 300mgb speed dl to 98mgb dl speed. When you're gaming mp_ multiplayer, that is IRRATIONAL. So, I sure hope they have gotten better, in the intervening years.
Been using Proton free version for a few years now, it can run slow when a lot of people jump on it, i have it installed on 2 of my desktop computers ,and i think that's okay ,as long as only one is in use at a time ,and i think you can do that with up to 3 machine's.
That's the issue with free VPN's like Proton. Premium users take priority so once that traffic gets filled the free peasants will be thrown on the potato servers. I've been using Bitdefenders VPN as part of my premium package and the difference in speed is night and day. Proton is probably the best free option that being said.

Thats interesting - I have not noticed any lag when running ad blockers or VPN... maybe your ISP setting are messing about with your supply? I'm in Spain, (Jetnet) on a 2Mb feed, but totally unlimited. I DL about 20GB per day, ish. I occasionally get issues with ad blockers, but not often - and certainly not speed issues. Can you expand? I fix PC's as a side hustle and no doubt this will be an issue at some point... I know 2Mb is very slow (I was on 24Mb in 2004 in UK!!!) but its reliable and unlimited - so I stick with it.
For me the inability to specify the country the VPN server is in is kind of a deal breaker. I use a handful of free browser VPN plugins where I have more control over this.
Proton was great for free tier but they just changed it where split tunneling no long works and you cant choose your location it randomly chooses which makes it unusable for geo specific

Question. I have 2 locations. My house and my shop .25 miles away as thycrow flies. Tried a point to point but trees are too thick, signal shit. Being from the UK I have been using Proton for years on my fire stick since free streaming apps from the US tend to have better content than we get here. It doesn't tend to work on paid steaming services unless you pay for a subscription to it but it is still way better than others.
Like other commenters, I've been using Proton VPN Free for a couple of years now -- starting in 2018, I believe. I'm not a rabid consumer of streaming service content (e.g. Netflix). And I've never used a torrent site. So these disadvantages don't affect me. I use a VPN mainly for when I use public Wi-Fi (e.g. coffee shops, public libraries, and airport terminals) to do work. So for me, Proton VPN Free fits my needs quite well. The down- and upload speeds are sufficient for sending/receiving large client graphics files (I'm a freelance graphic designer) when I use public Wi-Fi. To be fair and compare apples to apples. The non vpn test should be with a server in Texas. The way you did it you were testing using a local server when non vpn and a Texas server when using vpn. Gotta account for the transit time to Texas. Then again , I guess practically people just want to know their performance hit using vpn.
I get half download speed 100Mbps to 50 . And 15 minute wait to change servers.. And I can't even sign in to Netflix. So it sucks just like all other "free" vpn's

I am an old tech. I remember setting up my own VPN on my Server at home, the features were included in Windows. Back when Windows was an operating system, not an advertising dispenser.

I used the free version for awhile, but at that time their severs got overwhelmed, So I just purchased the paid version. Been okay for the past couple of years. If they raised the upload speed they would have to drop the download speed in 99% of customers would never know the difference.

I have it on my phone and its very slow. It has only one server and it always flashes a time upgrade to a pro version. I have not tried it on a PC.

It's still possible to bypass a Microsoft account. As far as I know, the video I did on it still works fine.

I would point out the talking points only say 'the company' does not store your information. the key words being 'store' & 'the company'. Nothing about forwarding, or about cooperation with governmental bodies in setting up stings.

It is not random. With a free account users can choose which server they want to connect to from 3 different countries(US,NL,JP).

Free VPNs are just as good because the paid ones no longer work at all. They can get around them.
Sadly Proton vpn has gone stingy on its free vpn.

I just got my version rolled with the dreaded 'quick connect/no other servers' just today. Can't connect to get to a game. Sincerely, not the first thing I wanted to wake up to. I'm not even going to try to wonder in what way Proton did this to av01d cr0vvding, since that's all part of the [free] plan. I could always get to a jp server no problem, but we're now tied to a russian roulette / connect policy that primarily ties you down to local?
That's nice and all for local privacy, but it really blows actually connecting elsewhere.

Cable (coax) internet is usually slower in upload speeds than fiber. The same is true for 4G and 5G.
Companies always give a slower upload speed. It's stupid, but that's how they make money.
@@jamesyoung151 very few people need that fast of an upload speed. By keeping the infrastructure primarily dedicated to download speed they're able to offer you a lower bill. If they raised the upload speed they would have to drop the download speed in 99% of customers would never know the difference.
