In Florida if you're locked up in a jail and you owe money you can have people order for you online and they can send it in that's the only way you can get food if you owe the jail money or if that's the case with him they won't let him get money put on his books you can have people order online and they will send it in or at least that's how Florida is

If you want a harsh prison regime that’s cool but these people in jail haven’t been sentenced to imprisonment, many of them still have the presumption of innocence and they’re held in terrible conditions. Ordinary decent people with morals sometimes end up in prison, cos situations happen, people defend themselves, sometimes people go too far, sometimes prosecutors get it wrong. There will ALWAYS be innocent people in prison. The statistical probability of there not being any innocent people in any facility is zero. Out of 2 million incarcerated Americans, who knows how many are innocent. And that being the case, the only morally acceptable position in my opinion, is humane treatment. No one should be raped in prison. It’s a stain on the reputation of the US. The greatest country in the world but you get some things so badly wrong sometimes. Nothing good will come out of people being bullied, humiliated, emasculated, brutalised. If they ever get out, and 90% of people incarcerated in the US are getting out one day, and it’s probably better that they’re not bitter and resentful to society for putting them through that hell, traumatised, and turned into a gladiator to survive… how would you like one of those people to live next door to you? Rape is always wrong, and prison officers who look the other way should be prosecuted, I’m sure there’s gotta be provisions in PREA, otherwise it’s basically toothless. Lots of people in prison for drug offences, or a string of extremely minor crimes with sentencing enhancements due to, say a felon in possession… like, not everyone is in there for some kind of unforgivable heinous crime. There should be strict distinction between penitentiaries where the worst kind of animals go to serve hard labour, with a strict regime, then prisons which are more rehabilitation based for people with the potential for redemption, and then jails where people are held securely, but given privileges like free video calls to family and friends, better accommodation, etc, being that these are unsentenced criminals. Don’t get me started on the UK justice system though; like our healthcare system, it’s falling apart at the seams - although I guess it’s good news that the NHS has banned “puberty blocker” but the question remains why would they have been given these in the first place?! Like why on earth would vulnerable children be given maladaptive avoidance strategies that involve highly invansive and harmful and irreversible surgery that they do not have the mental capacity to understand the consequences, the likely complications. It’s absolutely unconscionable and plainly criminal - violating statutes on child welfare and safeguarding as well as breaking just about every medical ethic in the book, and I’m determined with whatever little power I have, to demand that these dangerous criminals; psychopathic ideologues, merely masquerading as healthcare professionals, be truly held accountable, meaning severe prison sentences. The children whose bodies they’ve mutilated have to deal with these consequences for life, so these vile creeps sentences should reflect that. It’s fascinating being able to watch court TV and that, and American legal dramas, Boston legal, Lincoln lawyer… and seeing how the US have taken our 18th century legal system and modernised and expanded on it. There are things that you still use, like old-fashioned “law French” consisting of terms like ‘grand larceny’ ‘felonies and misdemeanours’ and many more, that the UK courts have stopped using cos of an emphasis on “plain English” and “public engagement with the justice system”. They could have public engagement straight away by allowing televised trials. I’ve had mixed feelings about cameras in courts, but, as long as there’s protections for vulnerable witnesses , mentally ill defendants etc, and we don’t allow the kind of reality TV justice you have on Court TV & Dan Abram’s networks, with with closeups on the faces of the accused as the verdict is read; feels a bit too much like voyeurism. Charlie Adelson slumping in absolute defeat realising he’s never going home. Bit we do need sober recordings of events in courts in the interest of transparency. One thing you do amazingly in the US is your commitment to transparency. Like, in most cities in the US anyone can listen in on police radios. In the UK, ever since they went digital in the 90s it’s all been encrypted and impossible to listen in on. Personality I think we’ve dumbed down our UK justice system. Also we’ve cut legal aid, which is basically now limited to indigent people, like people on welfare benefits. People on relatively low incomes - a household income of £37,500 - about €50,000 and you have to pay upfront for a private lawyer. If you’re found not guilty you can get a rebate but only at rates much lower than any decent lawyer would charge. So they’re left with a shortfall often of tens of thousands of pounds. They call it the innocence tax. There’s concerns about the state of some jurors having no clue what’s going on or totally misunderstand the law they’ve been asked to rule on.
