  • On this episode we are back on the 1973 Dodge Challenger and we are installing the complete exterior structure from the firewall to the tail panel. I show how to install, the outer wheel houses, trunk drop offs, quarter panels, deck filler panel, hinges, trunk, rear tail panel, lower valance and a complete full roof skin on the Challengers. This should be similar to most e body car but will be the same process for all 1970, 1971, 1972. 1973 and 1974 Dodge Challengers.
    Thanks for watching if you like what you see and want to help support what we with putting out videos on this channel please visit our store and pick up a shirt, hat or a sticker.

    I am so glad I found this video last night. I can't tell you how helpful it is for me. I'm doing a '72 Challenger and hit a wall trying to align my full quarters, outer wheel wells, deck panel and trunk gutter panels. Last night I was ready to list the project on FB and admit defeat but this morning I started over and used your strapping idea, more screws and tons of vise grip clamps. Now things are really starting to line up and make sense. Your meticulous attention to detail really helped me understand how to attack my car. The deck panel install technique was a game-changer! You are truly a craftsman and kudos to your son and wife too for their help. Thank you!

    I've just purchased a 71 challenger, it s not as rough as this car but needs floor and trunk pans and other stuff, I'm a fabricator but not a body man. These videos are really helping me understand rebuilding a car. Thank you, very informative. It's got a 440, 727, 8 3/4 suregrip. Missing a lot of parts. Power front discs too.

    Super helpful seeing the order of assembly and how test fitting panels gets the best results. Your panel modification tips take some of the panic out of cutting up new metal.
    A simple ratchet strap can make a big difference in panel positioning.

    U guys do a great job first of all but I do have one suggestion being that I usually just set my mig at the thickness of "both" panels I'm welding together and just spot weld with no holes. I've never had a weld break if u have your welder set right and u get complete penetration. Again nice work!

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  4 місяці тому

      Thank you very much I appreciate the Tip. I do like to drill the holes as the MIG likes to fill in that surface area just for my piece of mind honestly. That seems to work best for me but I have used that process with a TIG special tip you suggested where your using the top panel and adhere to the bottom panel.

    Awesome videos. I have watched a lot of these types of videos and I really appreciate the breadth of material you cover in such a succinct manner. I did have a question about the Pro Spot PR2000 spot welder. Are you using 3-phase or a single-phase power supply?

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  Рік тому

      Thank you! I am running the welder on 220V dual phase. You are correct it will run 3 phase and still trying to come up with a plan to figure out what it would take to get 3 phase into the garage, but honestly I don't have any issues running it on the dual phase minus every now and then on initial startup tripping the breaker.

    Another excellent video. My new favorite channel. Your AMD panels look so nice. I used AMD quarters on a ‘68 Charger and while they fit nice, they needed a lot of straightening and their response was they all needed filler to make perfect. It was obvious there was some grinding and tapping done before the black primer. Wondering if you’ve seen this too?

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  Рік тому +1

      Thank you very much, I agree with the AMD rep you talked too, really any panel will need full body work to make straight and not wavy when painted with a slick paint job. The cars in these videos look decent and would be perfect for a matte black prime job but never fly for a high gloss paint to be acceptable. I am body working the 71 barracuda in the shop and a video idea was talk about what is needed to bring a brand new panel to paint. I also run across some panels that will need more help then others, It all depends on the tooling and the life of your car. The number 1 question I get asked all the time is how much would this costs to install (model) quarter panel on (model) car and I don't have a solid answer because there are variances between cars and even in the stampings on the panels even when i buy the same ones but with some time differences between purchase I noticed. So my options are give a stupid high quote, cut corners to meet the requirements for the owner to get the job or be honest and say I do it by the hour.

    Always great to see you bring things together. Both of my quarter panels seem to be lower than the outside corners of trunk which doesn’t sit flat with the top of the quarters. Nothing is welded in. Do you have any suggestions as to what needs to be done to make the quarter panels the same height as the surface of the trunk? I checked with another trunk lid and it is the same issue for my 70 dart. The back of the trunk sits aligned with the quarter extensions but as the drip rail extends back it sits lower than the back outside corners of the trunk. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  9 місяців тому

      @jimdrechsel3611 Yes that is a problem with the challengers, I will use vise grips that will hook on a rachet strap on both quarters and try and pull them together first see if that helps. If not then I will slightly slice the curve inner areas of that corner and put a monkey on a stick (jack tool) and lift up under the corners to make a harder bend in the top and lift the edge if that makes sense.

      @carthageclassiccars  Рік тому

      Thank you and that is a loaded question with so many variables. Usually I don't build them start to finish and it all depends on customer expectations. Usually in the metal stage of a car this bad you will have 150-200 hours alone to get it to a place the body shop can spend less time really dialing it in. The body show I would say if you want some really high end job probably another 100-200 hours for paint. Then assembly from there and its the little things you wouldn't think assembling that take the longest. Its a lot of work to put them together especially rust free, built to last and in show winning quality.

    Hi there. I'm restoring a 1973 mustang Mach 1. Will you make videos of that white mustang too? Thanks

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  Рік тому +1

      That white mustang is one of my cars that I did all the metal work on years ago and believe is in the process of being sold so unfortunately not that car. However I personally have a 73 Mach 1 that will need full restoration and I will use as my personal fun car. So if all goes well there will be one on the channel sooner or later.

    The inner curve areas of the drip rail or the curve area of where the rear deck meets the quarter? The slope of the quarter has a different slope than the rear deck as well. The quarter has a smaller radius than the deck which has a more subtle slope.
    The only way I get the quarters to match the trunk is if I jack up the quarter but I don’t know if it would stay that way once welded the quarters to drip rails in the curves of the trunk corners with all that stress loaded. It is like I would have to bend the quarters up next to the drip rails. I would think you want a relaxed fit. If I could email you pictures some time it would help explain. These AMD quarters are not fitting well. I can’t bring them together with the rear deck unless I cut the roof pillar supports to allow them to come together. If I don’t the gaps on the trunk are much too wide. I don’t mind the metal work but need some guidance. Your experience I know would have good insight.

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  9 місяців тому

      you can shoot me an email to carthageclassiccars@gmail.com. Was this car built on a JIG because usually there is not a time I am cutting roof pillar supports or anything like that. With the quarters I know what you mean about them sagging they do on the edges at times and that fix isn't too bad.

    Interesting video, but the ton of new and very expensive sheet metal you're just throwing in instead of making repairs is much more than what a 73 Challenger is worth.

    • @carthageclassiccars
      @carthageclassiccars  4 місяці тому

      So I disagree with you in the sense the car is worth what the owner values the car, not what a 3rd party values it as. Most repairs also take much more time to fix properly and will usually not last the decades this car will. Also if you watch the video of the entire inner structure being rotten I would wonder how it would be "cost effective" fixing the inner structure while repairing the inch plus of filer on the quarter panels instead of buying a complete quarter panel at $500.
