But the important point that this presentation misses out on is the fact that the US with their minions went all out in the security council against India and in favour of Portugal (and that Goa should have been returned to Portuguese control).
It was only thanks to the VETO of the USSR that Goa is today an integral part of India.
We should not forget this.
russian revolutionaries are anyway experts to fix Tsars or Sala tsars in this case, lol. great anecdote though.
No wonder the Russians are in goa in large numbers
Defending Nehru on behalf of congress.
Who was responsible for the grave mistake done by passing on rather gifted UNO security to China? It was not merely mistakes but criminal one.
All prime ministers of india have had a very timid andtip toeing relation with China bending over backwards trying not to annoy China and please the dragon .This has had exactly the opportunity effect with China riding roughshod all over the border and diplomatically too. Of late this reality has sunk in that india has to confront China whe its interests and borders are threatened. Better late than never
It's unfortunate that many Indians, let alone foreigners have not even heard of the Goan inquisition. The atrocities the Portuguese committed in Goa make the British look like a benevolent force.
We should ask the Pope to apologize for granting Inquisition in Goa.
That’s how I too look at history - What if Germany and Japan won the Second World War - then I realized there is a series in Prime - Man in the High Castle! Interesting one!

@Surojeet Chatterjee Glad to see some reasonable talk on youtube - agree but I don't give plus or minus - they have done reasonably for that times.
One very imprtant point which you missed but it adds weightage to PM Nehru. When the Indian army went in and when the Portugese were outnumbered, Portugal dispatched it's reinforcements and Warships to Goa. They had to cross the Suez Canal to reach India, but Suez Canal had been recently nationalized by Egypt and the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser refused permission to the Portugese as he was close friend of PM Nehru.
Correct. This point was missed by SG. Closing of suez was critical in stopping reinforcements.
Good insight
I agree. Mr Nehru had to wait till his good friend became President of Egypt and nationalize the Suez Canal, otherwise how could Goa have been saved. Good point adds a lot of weight.
Suez canal was taken over by Egypt in 1956
Was Portugese Navy and other forces stronger than Indian AF?
Being a Goan. I have always heard the stories of liberation of Goa & atrocities they had to ho through under the Portuguese rule. This NATO Wala argument is actually baseless. But journalists write articles for other journalists so we know why one does what he does.
WahModijiWah! Though Dadra, Nagar & Haveli were liberated by our revolutionaries in 1954, it was not incorporated into India officially until 1961. As a child, I was taken to Portuguese Goa many times to visit relatives and remember the liberation when it occurred. One criticism leveled at PM Nehru was not that he was hesitant or a pacificist but that he was simply uncaring, as at least he could have negotiated for the release of long-held Indian prisoners like Mohan Ranade. Agree about the plebiscite trick that has been tried many times - Even Lincoln was asked to hold one in the southern states.

In spite of all the atrocities, all the converted goan christians are proud of being Christians like muslims in India and have conflicts with local hindus whose forefathers fought bravely with Portuguese and did not convert unlike the cowardly forefathers of christians.
Its fascinating how folks from places like Goa, Pondicherry actually boast how they were ruled for a longer period of time thus having richer western culture 🤣🤣 reminds me of Simon Come back memes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
People can be proud of their culture while being aware of the difficulties of that time. Who’d have thought humans are complicated social beings.
But Pudduchery has a clear demarcation of how the French used to live (in rich quarters, broad streets, closer to the coast) while Tamils used to live in congested, dirty, narrow parts. If still they're proud of that then Ignorance is bliss!

My grandmother was part of the contingent who helped in nursing the people who had fallen down after being caned or shot at by the portugese. These people did not carry any weapons on them instead they wanted to enter goa. She talked of one of the leaders Hirve Guruji who she saw fall. Wonderful explanation of the entire Goa liberation. Pointing on someone is easy but they showed the way. We need to respect them for their work. I wanted to know about how much we are liberating rather dividing the people of India.
These days why do we have to be apologetic when mentioning Nehru and his actions? Judge people by their times. What was he in charge of as the first PM of a nation just born ?: A poverty stricken , famine stricken nation , backward industrially, literacy wise, agritech wise ... In fact that group of regions had just become a nation. Before that we all know India did not exist as it is now there were no institutions for governance, elections, parliament and military governance and so on. It was a Greenfield project for Nehru and like Rajnath Singh in the first NDA rule in 2014 said, no one can fault Nehru's intent. Indeed he hada singular purpose to make India modern by adhering to DEMOCRATIC VALUES and following PEACE PEACE PEACE. As taught to him by his leader, Mhatma Gandhi. If they had not put peace ahead of everything else, today we would also be a backward, religion based country that is in loggerheads with itself and neighbours. Check West Asia and our own people
We have chosen peaceful route and what did we achieve in return? Lost territory in Kashmir and Ladakh. Our neighbours still hate us. We are technically backward with a per capita income of $2000 due to socialist policies. We are a religion based society giving special treatment to non Hindus.

1.) Why didn't NATO come to rescue of Portugal in 1961 war?
2.) What changed Nehru's mind to invade and liberate goa?
3.)Why did we wait till 1961 if we were to liberate goa by force?
Lol.. You didn't saw the video, stupid
Dude, he answered them. It's JFK.
I think China Fear
Could JFK have changed NATO policy all by himself and allowed indian army to march in and liberate goa?
Even Portugal was hell bent on saving goa. It called it as integral part of its territory.
MAYBE one reason why Nehru delayed army action could be that Nehru didn't want india to become a theatre for cold War politics by inviting NATO.
Portuguese colonies were not part of NATO.
Article 5 of NATO collective defence only applies to territories in Europe and North America
Actually he was spineless. Hyderabad, Kashmir, Baluchsthan, Goa events show that he was more interested in his own image.
But you forgot to mention contribution of RSS members like Sudhir Phadake, Jaganathrao Joshi and many more. They were main architect of Goa liberation. Nehru never wanted to give them credit. If he would've not sent force, freedom fighters would have liberated it.

At the end it was use of force which worked in Goa libration.....so where is the logic that Nehru was avoiding use of force ?
Using force is always considered to be the last option. The amount of diplomatic back-channeling between countries never makes it out into the public. Even if it does, it comes out decades later in the form of memoirs.

It is painful to mention that two of the freedom fighters of Goa Mohan Ranade and Tello Mascaranhas remained in Portuguese jail even after Goa was liberated. Ranade was released NOT by our diplomatic initiative but due to the request by Tamilnadu C.M. C.N.Annadurai, to the Pope. Mohan Ranade passed away in Pune 3 years back. The news of his demise was mentioned by one of the national dailies
published from the city on an inside page, while the other completely ignored it.
It would definitely be more painful to tell you that 15 of those implicated in the Pinto's Revolt ( and I am a Pinto of the same family) were brutally executed by the Portuguese.
Shekhar says : "Salazar was the only european fascist leader after the war". I think Franco (ruled Spain 1939-1975) could also be considered to be in the same category.

It is one of the best episodes for me because it filled a gap in my understanding the history in the aftermath of Independence. I was always wondering when Infia could drive the British who were the mightiest Imperialist power of human history , what stopped India from throwing France and Portugal from India, after all their colonies were like small dots. Sekharji, the mystery was solved.I could understand the complex situation prevailing then, which prevented Nehruji to take any adventurous step. If the human affairs were so complex then, how much more complex it is now due to tremendous scientific and technological advancement. If it USA+NATO backing , which stopped India from taking over Goa then, the situation is no different now. Pakistan which has forcibly occupied and colonized POK , but India is hesitant to reclaim our portion of Kashmir from Pakistan because it has the support of Red China.Whatever, the idealists and dreamers and utopian thinkers may say, one thing is clear- mighty would always rule the world and might as always is a combination of arms power and the power of human mind.
Kashmir is completely different, Goa is a small part and was being controlled from so far a land , Nehru was unnecessarily hesitant

It is quite difficult to imagine that NATO would have attacked India over Goa, given USSR... In any case, Mid 1950s was not long ago since FDR's strong opinion on Allies holding on to countries post II war. It is an _erroneous conclusion_ that US official policy supported PT's occupation of Goa in any earnestness.
India-Soviet ties were upgraded to a military alliance dimension only in 1971 under Indira Gandhi when the Peace and friendship treaty with them was signed. Before that any NATO attack didn't imply guaranteed Soviet assistance to India.
@@chunilalbaldaniya153 and you always try to demonise them? Saying the truth is not trying to save somebody from criticism.
it is erroneous to assume USSR would have automatically and earnestly supported India in any conflict with NATO. You need to understand foreign policy is not a mere game of oh this should have happened or that should have happened. It has real consequences and a looming consequence of military intervention was that of a NATO attack which would have destroyed India if it had happened. Obviously it is highly unfortunate that Goans had to wait so long for their liberation but it did happen. Without completely understanding and realizing the dynamics of world politics in the 50s and 60s we can say a lot of things and make a lot of noise but it is unwise to say the least.
@@aritrakarakart5163 Of course in hindsight one can only conjecture and discuss in terms of probabilities. However, that fact remains that from 1955 till end of Khrushchev period, India received more military assistance from USSR than even China! Question on whether NATO would have attacked, likelihood is less and had NATO attacked, USSR assistance seems likely. Foreign policy is complex and that Nehru's foreign policy had a strong pacifist element, is also a fact. Therefore, one would give PM's statement on Nehru/Goa more credence, than not. Probabilistically.

Very authentic presentation of historical facts as a Goan I can give a thumbs up to Shekarji and his team for the research. The swift operation by Indian army was possible only because of the support it received from the local people and countless number of freedom fighters.
By the end of the monologue one is left scratching his head what Shekhar Gupta bought to light that we already don't know. He did not use the great trust capital and love he had in drawing boundaries with Pakistan, China, Nepal and close it. His internationalism and idealism lay down the foundation of weak India.
Perfect summary!
Well explained
Not telling growing generation whether Nehru was culprit or not
SG,
Very detailed presentation of the recorded history, I liked it. Thank You. This is good journalism. Present the data as data, unopinionated. Let the reader or listener make his or her own interpretations, judgements.
Best.

Such an interesting article, shekhar sir
Dear SG, during those turbulent times itself, pakistan attacked balochistan, pakistan attacked kashmir, pakistan aspired for hyderabad and junagarh. Did any force stop pakistan to do that ? Nehru was an undeserving person on PM post and he was hopelessly appeasing everyone to get some international recognition, but each time he was ultimately forced to do what he was supposed to do very long ago.
Modi is a pigmy before him.
I do not understand why nehru for freeing our own territory was looking for world approval. Pakistan occupied kashmir in 1948 and india observed cease fire instead of clearing the Pakistani forces. If nehru had been prime minister in 1971 bangladesh would never have been independent. He would have waited for consensus ! He was the weakest prime minister especially in foreign affairs
I wonder why no one mentioned this in parliament. We need more people who read. As always The Print is not taking sides, not blaming but telling facts, as a news channel should do.
Modi is now almost 8 years in power now and including of Atal ji tenure it's more than 13 years of No Data Available in power.
That's a lot of time. Instead of blaming people of history, He should rather work in present for better future.
Problem is this great PM of ours either blames first pm half of the time or gives unworkable or beyond tenure goals of future rest of the time.
Somebody needs to bring this man in present once and for all.
Nehru did this Nehru did that , Mr Modi what did you do ?
*Notebandi blunder..
*5 slabs wala 1 nation 1 tax which is nothing like good and simple tax..
*Sampoorna lockdown.. at a time when there was no need and states would have handled things better.
*Petrol price 3 figures
*GDP down down down
*Debt high high high
...and list goes on and on and surely will go on atleast till 2024 as none can expect logic from a dumb person like Modi.
Can Modi himself enlighten us on his innumerable blunders please? It will be pleasure to hear that.
In Patel's biography written by Rajmohan Gandhi it is stated that Nehru was reluctant to take control of Kashmir and Junagarh. The same reluctance reflects in taking of Goa. Had Patel alive, Goa would have been independent long back.
It goes some way to understand why so many ex-pats have a romantic attraction for Goa, with its permutations of Indian classical traditions and Western epistemologies intermingling through form and culture.
I don't know but I am curious to know where I can get the info. about the published declassified documents of the state department of USA
Superb and illuminating account of a puzzling bit of Indian history!
Wow!
Really good analysis
Great piece of historic information
Many are blaming Nehru. But we should know the foreign policy of first few years of Independence. One more thing, the communication is not like today. How many days were required to reach one letter from foreign countries. Yes, the process took so long for so many reasons. Now, it is very easy to blame earlier Leaders. Don't blame earlier Leadrs without knowing the situation of that time....
Pondicherry, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Diu were liberated much earlier in the 1954. Nehru pandered to the leftist lobby and refused to integrate and liberate goa
It’s always unfair to criticise leaders of the past. We did not live in those times and hence cannot fathom the decisions that were taken and in what circumstances.
Criticism should only be for governments that were during your adult (post voting age) lifetime
I mean, people (including Modi) are criticising Nehru for mishandling of China. But nobody is discussing Modis handling of China incursions.
If There was no Modi, there would have been no news. China would have quietly occupied more territory just like they did for so many years.
