For those who may not know, this bit is itself a parody of the 1970 Canadian film "Goin' Down the Road", about 2 Maritimers trying to make it in Toronto.
Full movie here on UA-cam - ua-cam.com/video/JIpD-UD8Wlw/v-deo.html&pp=ygUTZ29pbmcgZG93biB0aGUgcm9hZA%3D%3D ... Watched it for the first time this week. Brilliant film.
SCTV... the true measuring stick for off the wall comedy..Just ask Dan Akroyd! They got blasted by the CRTC for not having enough "Canadian content" in the programming. Hence, Bob and Dougs great white north, hinterland whos who mockumentaries, and this absolute, pure genius of a skit with 2 maritimers and a french Canadian goin to Yong st for "doctorin jobs n' lawyerin jobs".... lol. This cast set a massive standard for quality comedy programming that stands to this day.
It's actually a spoof, not a skit. This is directly poking fun at Don Shebib's 1970 movie "Goin' Down The Road" about 2 Maritimers heading to Toronto with big dreams and leaving with nothing. So they Canadian Contented the hell out of the show with this one.
The best part is that it's connected to the Hinderland Who's Who PSA that appears earlier in the episode. All the skits in the episode have heavy continuity with each other - another reason SCTV is still a cut above everything else.
My ear is telling me that it is David Clayton-Thomas of Blood, Sweat & Tears doing the vocal on the rocked out version of "Won't Get To It". No surprise to learn that David C-T is a Canadian with history on Yonge Street where his musical career started.
I actually lived in Canada for 2 yrs (Newfoundland) but I was 5 yrs old. I saw this back in the 80's when I was in my 20's. As an American, I had no idea what this was supposed to parody but I thought it was hilarious - especially pairing it with Stompin' Tom O'Connor's track. Yrs later I watched "Going Down the Road" and it all made sense.
So many random memories of Yonge St. Watching cops beat up a random kid for being a smart ass. Kid threw the cops baton across the street! Saw Bob and Doug shoot a scene in front of Sam the Record man..Random Eugene Levy and Kim Mitchell on a folding bike sightings!! Skating on Lake Devo..Chess on Gould St
Too bad couldn't show first the "Hinterland Who's Who" parody of the CBC, with John Candy's deadpan narration, which preceded this segment in the SCTV full episode. Hilarious episode overall with all the CBC jokes, "Monday Night Curling" and every 2nd character named Gord :) I think its out there on UA-cam. Fiona's off-handed remark "I thought them woodchuck things only hibernated in snowy climes huh?" is my favourite joke from any SCTV.
TO DA GIRLS O YONGE STREET ! Wow T.O. was so liveable then. Is that the CN Tower (under construction?) just over John Candy's shoulder in the phone booth scene.
For some strange reason when I first saw this (and first saw the disclaimer), I thought it was gonna be a parody of one of those public service films about something.
Due to massive, malicious, malignant, migration from incompatible cultures? Mysteriously imposed by some self-selecting, dogooder, self-righteous, 'we know best' internationalist banking elite ? Just wonderin'

I quote this sketch to this day. "Doctorin jobs and lawyerin jobs!"

Massive Canadian film when it came out. Studied it in my film class at university.

Correct, good movie too
I wish I had read this comment like this ages ago. Silly me had no idea it was based on this film.
yeah that's it I remember
I was in tears at 3:20 when Eugene Levy was giving the groundhog CPR.
The Hinterland Who's Who TV crew and woodchuck got a huge laugh out of me the first time I watched this. I saw TONS of those on TV as a kid.
"Look at that thing!", "That's a balcony, Gord". Too funny.
I remember back in Cape Breton when we had to drive our cars along railway lines since roads hadn't been invented there yet,lol
RAILWAYS!? You had it posh!
@@GeoffChisholmyou were lucky! all we had was two ruts in the middle of nowhere
This was based on the Canadian movie ``Going Down the Road`` SCTV, brilliant as always.
Might be their best spoof ever, eh?
Spockboy. Sadly, there was nothing funny about the movie Going Down the Road. A sad social commentary on many levels.
Just another case of my only knowing the SCTV parody, not the original.
You have to be a Canadian of a certain age to fully appreciate this.
I’m American and I appreciate this skit. Watched this show on NBC back in the early 1980’s. Saw the movie they parodied.
Damn,... 8-tracks, a Goin' Down the Road spoof, John Candy, SCTV, Stompin' Tom Connors, i'm in friggin' heaven!
Hilarious! I've been rewatching SCTV for a few weeks now.

without a doubt the greatest comedy to come out of canada, ricky, julien and bubbles run a close second

"That's a balcony, Gord." LOL
Brilliant work, miss this show
Best SCTV skit ever.
Doctoring and layering the maritime way. I remember watching this in the early 80's. It was the maritime perception that persists today.
SCTV's running "Hinterland's Who's Who" joke.....brilliant.
Just think, there are whole generations of young Canadians who have no idea that the woodchuck hibernates in snowy climes.
My ear is telling me that it is David Clayton-Thomas of Blood, Sweat & Tears doing the vocal on the rocked out version of "Won't Get To It". No surprise to learn that David C-T is a Canadian with history on Yonge Street where his musical career started.
Any idea how to get the David Clayton Thomas cover of that Stompin Tom song?
That cassette sits hidden in the deep vaults under Toronto's City Hall.
2:40 So "stereo"typical -- dashboard littered with 8-Track tapes.
the CBC producer performing CPR on a woodchuck :)

The film Stephen Harper said was "too highbrow for most Canadians." Filmed entirely in downtown Toronto.
"Where we going to get another woodchuck? Tell me that!" Wow, thanks for sharing this. ;-)
the poor woodchuck was being used to film "Hinterland's Who's Who"
"that's a balcony Gord"
Glad this humour was my Canadian young life! Not now though. Sad.
Great take-off on 'Goin' Down the Road'!

Love these hi-def 240p videos....
Remembering the old film censor warnings they used to use.
Would love to see Part 2!
Look at dat t'ing!!
Freaking awesome!
So much Canada...from Moncton to Stompin' Tom Connors.
Brilliant
“Cover for me on that surgery.” 😂
You cannot possibly appreciate the spoof going on in this skit unless you are a Canadian Baby Boomer.
"You son of a b!"
Is that John candy?
Yes it was. He was an SCTV legend. RIP
Doug McGrath

I'm still waitin for my pot full! LARRY !!!! LARRY !!! what about those jobs!!
Trailer Park Boys may just have watched this one a couple times
If the trailer park boys were in this as little kids, this would be Canadian gospel. Especially, not in spite of, starring Mr. Flaherty.
😂 Always go to Yonge st. Always
J'aime.
The intro to this reminds me of trailer park boys…. If drug dealers were into lawyerin and doctorin that is. Lol.
Proto Trailer park boys Bubbles to sctv would be a nice touch
Wow! Thanks!
The original trailer park boys

this plays on UA-cam on my PlayStation but says it's unavailable on UA-cam on my phone or laptop
Is that a very young John Candy? Yes, it's somewhat obvious this was a parody of GDtR or DTRA sequel.
Pure genius
Why are they yelling all the time?! 😂
Remind me not to add that Larry Gagner guy on Facebook if he sends a "friend" request...he's not much of a friend!
It's SCTV dude.
Now I know where trailer park boys got some of their idearrrrrs....
i think this is where the shit mobile came from .... LOL
thanks Reddit !

I'm bummed out. There's a mouse in the house.
Moose not mouse.
I'm movin' to Etobicoke
You son of a B! Lol
Eugene levy
Eiselton lanes cash on the barrel head I went to Canada just to see Younge ST
I don't think Goin' Down the Road really needs a spoof. But, I guess some folks have time on their hands.
Oh, but it got a sequel ...
thanks eh. im gonna go pee on yonge st
toronto is not the same today...was nice back in the day...now its just a slum
