Darren has a brother named Darren, did you miss that? All I could think of was The Bob Newhart Show..."This is my brother Darryl and my other brother Darryl", as said by Darryl.
Eugene Levy such a grossly underrated comedic talent. EDIT: Evidently a lot of people replying to my comment are having diaper rash because I stated “underrated”. Like every other comment on social media, there’s always HALF WITS who have to take exception, thus I’ll clarify my statement for those cry babies: Compared to Candy (SCTV) and Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and a long list of others from SNL, Eugene Levy, though just as funny if not funnier, didn’t enjoy the same level of fame. I’m sure this will start a whole new string of keyboard-warrior pantie-waste replies. 🤷🏻♂️
For sure. That sketch wouldn’t have been as funny without his deadpan seriousness, but he would have been hilarious as one of the contestants also. Rarely do you have a group as equally talented as this.
Yes Eugene is a grossly underrated comedic actor. His Bobby Bittman character is so good. The sketch centered around a Bobby Bittman PSA for literacy done in a children's library cracks me up every time. As Bobby Bittman gives his synopsis of Moby Dick he blows cigarette smoke on the kids and taps his cigarette ash off on the librarian's desk is pure comedy gold.
When I was a kid I was allowed to stay up late on weekends and watch this... I thought it was funny, but now I just watched it again today for the first time and I was howling so loud I had to pause it twice cause I LITERALLY FELL OFF MY SEAT laughing so hard and now I have a headache for the rest of the night... Damn that feels good... Canadiana at it's VERY BEST!! Mocking in a fun way our American counterparts - who invented practically Everything... and although we are not as successful we find a way to have a laugh in our own way.. this is SHEER BRILLIANCE from the BEST of the BEST comedians in this country in the 70's.. If you think of it from an ACTOR's standpoint even these characters are SO GOOD! So rich, believable, etc.. it's hard to believe just how Awesome SCTV was in those days - in this skit alone there are Multiple levels of comedy!! Just looking at the face's of Martin Short, John Candy, Andrea Martin... they NEVER BREAK CHARACTER! And another thing: comedy done RIGHT is NOT POLITICAL!! They didn't need to create a whole damn show called, "we hate the president so we're just going to bitch about him for this whole episode!!"
One of the funniest comedy sketch shows ever! All the cast were wonderful and I never laughed so hard at some of the characters they played. Since it is off the air, I got several DVDs of the show and love to watch them from time to time.
TO ALL THOSE QUESTIONING WHY "PARKA" WAS WRONG: In Canada (where SCTV was) and other places where it gets a lot of snowfall, parkas are not tracked through the house; they are instead kept in the Mud Room or other separate small room near a house exit.
I’ve always heard of this show because it had so many of my favorite comedians on it who I loved growing up, but being in the US I never watched it. I am really enjoying these shows and it is really cheering me up.
Look, practically every single person from sctv is still doing something today. I know John Candy would be if he were still alive. Eugene Levy, Martin Short, and Katherine O'Hara, are still on TV. Very talented people!
Sctv wasn’t broadcast in my area as a kid but a family friend sent us like 20 hours of recorded episodes. We wore the tape out lol! Formed my sense of humor!
In 1982 though just at the height of its popularity it was on NBC as well but like 2 or 3 in the morning. It was at the time Networks were starting to be on all night.
Yep, low budget sets and they didn't need high-priced CGI to showcase their acting skills. Now days, CGI and low-brow acting is the new thing in Hollywood. CGI is showcased in many movies with lousy actors.
I saw it all when it was new. Spent my formative years with those incredible talents on my TV screen. Grew up in the wilds near Toronto, but eventually got to see some of their stage revues at the venerable Old Firehall, basically a dinner theatre, and saw all these original cast members on stage. Plus others whose work was equally brilliant -- Peter Aykroyd, Robin Duke, Tony Rosato. And Levy as Trebek ("Alex Trebel") is spot-on in presenting Trebek's frustration with some of his dozy & ditzy high school contestants on "Reach For the Top," a classically stodgy Canadian idea of a game show from the 1960s and 70s. I used to marvel at the brilliance of some, and the stupidity of others. SCTV's team nailed it!
Me too, I'm very thankful to have grown up watching that during my formative years. I remember some saying that they "hated" the seventies, I feel blessed honestly

"I have a wonderful wife and two boys named Frank." This is genius, loved SCTV.
Like every other comment on social media, there’s always HALF WITS who have to take exception, thus I’ll clarify my statement for those cry babies:
Compared to Candy (SCTV) and Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and a long list of others from SNL, Eugene Levy, though just as funny if not funnier, didn’t enjoy the same level of fame.
I’m sure this will start a whole new string of keyboard-warrior pantie-waste replies. 🤷🏻♂️
they are all underrated but unironically they have almost all been with work for 40 years
Andrew Thompson true
For sure. That sketch wouldn’t have been as funny without his deadpan seriousness, but he would have been hilarious as one of the contestants also. Rarely do you have a group as equally talented as this.
He has his own TV, so I don't think he is under rated. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schitt%27s_Creek
When I feel like laughing I come here to watch the classic SCTV comedy skits!
John Candy is a legend! RIP. 🌹 March 4, 1994.
The face Eugene Levy makes at 6:37 is one of the funniest things I've ever seen!
SCTV was amazing. when I describe it to people I say, its like SNL but funny.
It's funnier than Saturday Night Live, crazier than Fridays, and able to tear pop culture a new "A" better than MADtv. It's Super Sketch Show!
1982 called, it wants its joke back.
And oh so Canadian
SNL was the best but SCTV was great at times
@@jekyllynch6168 SNL was funny up until the time Akroyd/Belushi left--after that--hardly at all--SCTV was consistently hilarious
All these years later and I still get tears of laughter . All comedy legends!
I want those seat covers!
Not did any other major network comedy show, tho.
I love the way Candy is the announcer and one of the contestants at the same time lol
SCTV was one of best shows ever. So much talent
"Swedish meatballs" oh my god that had me rolling on the floor!
(confused face)...Spain?
best answer
Andrea Martin is a true comedy treasure! Honestly all of these people are legendary and the best of the best!
I love the way every sentence she says ends on the 'up'!
An ocean of talent here. A contingent of this level won't be seen again.
"What line of work is your employer in?" "He's the boss". I feel like this might be how I would answer that question.
My husband Bob worked on SCTV for 3 years. This was one of the best skits.
What did Bob do there?
Answer the question, Vickie.
"Keep your distance!" 😄.Them breaking him at the end was always the cherry on top.
I love Martin Shorts little smile after they buzz his answer wrong. I dunno why but that cracks me up every time.
Norm Macdonald brought me here. Now, I'll be up most of the night watching SCTV bits.
Good guy Norm.
LoudGoatGamer I thought that hi q was the one that influenced celebrity jeopardy, but probably both of them did
+David Levy It's actually, a mesh of a Canadian show that used to be on TV in Canada also ehh?
Norm knows his funny stuff!
I'm having some degree of difficulty getting through high school. lol
Norm is a Canuck,,,,he knows
Blanche looking vacantly off camera while being spoken to is brilliant..!!!
One of the funniest comedy sketch shows ever! All the cast were wonderful and I never laughed so hard at some of the characters they played. Since it is off the air, I got several DVDs of the show and love to watch them from time to time.
“ He blowed up real good”!!!!!!!!
I miss John Candy.🥹
We actually had those vinyl seat covers in the 70s. Made for miserable sitting in all seasons, but they kept the seats clean by-golly.
TO ALL THOSE QUESTIONING WHY "PARKA" WAS WRONG: In Canada (where SCTV was) and other places where it gets a lot of snowfall, parkas are not tracked through the house; they are instead kept in the Mud Room or other separate small room near a house exit.
Yes, for anywhere with winter
Parka is also not 3 articles of clothing
The heck is a mud room???
@JargoniusMaximus its used for wrestling, a common passtime in Canada. There is also the jello room.
Oh geez now you're going to have to explain "mud room"
I’ve always heard of this show because it had so many of my favorite comedians on it who I loved growing up, but being in the US I never watched it. I am really enjoying these shows and it is really cheering me up.
R.I.P. John Candy.
Gary Taylor
Lost too soon he was great in absolutely everything he did
Look, practically every single person from sctv is still doing something today.
Eugene Levy looking like a 1970’s stud.
I know! It's so incongruous with his usual four-eyed schtick.
It's not the first SCTV skit to get lifted by SNL, whoever wrote the Jeopardy sketches owes these folks a big thank you.
I agree. Will Ferrell does a great Eugen Levy/Alex Trebek impression.
Yes, and Norm MacDonald ask for permission 😀
love the moment at the end. Keep your distance!
Andrea Martin is amazing.
Truly amazing.
fosbury68 ~> Her Edith Prickly character looked like a friend's mom.
Can you direct me to the hotel?
I had a serious crush on Edith. You just KNEW she was kinky!
orangelion03 ~> Edith Prickley looked so much like the mom of 1 of my buddies! ☺
I never tire of this classic skit. Martin Short's outfit, teeth, and performance alone makes it worth watching.
I remember seeing SCTV when it originally aired and thinking how low budget it was. Now all I see is the comic genius.
It was certainly playing off the low-budget-ness of TV of that time.
Same with MST3K.
One of my favorite skits of all time. My friends and I will still just say "quilts" to each other.
My dad and my brothers do this!!
Great show from my youth. Plenty of talent on this shown. R..I.P. John Candy, Harold Ramis and Tony Rosato.
I miss SCTV.
I do too so greats come out of there .
Me too, I'm very thankful to have grown up watching that during my formative years. I remember some saying that they "hated" the seventies, I feel blessed honestly
