Home Free's ability to add movement to a song is excellent. Crescendos, diminuendos, faster, slower, movement with the beatboxer, chances in voices - all add to the feeling, the emotion of the song.
It is SO easy to forget Home Free is acapella. Adam Rupp's vocal percussion is incomparable. I love how Home Free keeps a lot of their video environments simple--allows the focus to be on the message and their incredible acapella vocals. Just amazing harmonies❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ #HomeFree #HomeFreeDoesChristmasBest
Absolutely Love this version….it gives me chills…sooo Beautiful ✝️🙏✝️‼️ Oh, Adam (beat boxer) is one unbelievable human being….&, there’s just No one like him ❣️🔥❣️‼️
My favourite rendition of the hymn by my favourite acapella band. The singing, harmonies & beatboxing are terrific and the crescendos . . . I've watched this video many times and I still get cold chills. Ending it with the bass singing "Mary Did You Know" adds an entirely different, rather ominous tone to the line. Thanks for playing this & your comments. If you haven't seen "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem" - it's mind-blowing.
Chance ,far left, Home Free's baritone can drop down to cover bass whenever Tim is singing lead. He was the bass singer in his previous acapella group.
This is by far the best version of this song that I’ve ever heard. It’s my favourite Christmas carol! It gives me shivers & goosebumps each time I hear Home Free sing this.
There’s an acapella group named “Voctave” that also sings this, (and sings it extremely well!) They feature the actual author of the song, a singer/ comedian named Mark Lowry. The way he sings it, you know that the lyrics come from a place deep in an unshakable part of his very being, and that he believes every word to his core. You don’t have to be a Christian to recognize this and appreciate it. If you watch this version you will not be disappointed. You know I’ve never given you a bad recommendation. Trust me on this one too.
Maybe it’s time to get more exposure to Chance’s vocal prowess. I suggest “I Can’t Outrun You”- 5 part harmony, it’s hauntingly beautiful, and Chance directed the video. He sings it on his lower register, which is warm and velvety. “Cover Me Up”, another Chance project, with very emotive delivery. “Helplessly Hoping “- yet another Chance project, 5 part harmony, and Chance leads it off. Tim and Chance hit us with the double bass in at least 2 sections of the song. Then there is a shared lead with Tim “Brothers in Arms “- again, 5 part harmony and it’s one of their masterpieces.
The really definitive one, though is "May Day." It always HUGELY surprises people who have only ever heard TIM sing bass with the group. It's really a MUST, because Chance REALLY gets to show off his range. It was posted on November 17, 2017, shortly after "I Can't Outrun You," which was posted on October 23, 2017. "Helplessly Hoping" came a few months later, on April 27, 2018. Another few months later, on November 19, 2018, Chance got another chance to really shine (baritone only), in "Some Girls Do." The young lady on the tailgate of the pickup with him is now his wife. 😀
Thank you for your reaction. This to me is the best of all the groups. I may be bias but I have heard many versions of this song. 🎶 it’s hard to beat # HOMEFREE harmony and the way they deliver it.
So beautiful. I think that the underlying bass is a combination of Chance and Adam. Fabulous, as always. I was not familiar with this song before I heard this version. I sent it to a friend and asked her if this is what it usually sounded like. Her response was "Oh, no." Love it.
Hey Viking, a must say that bought ptx and hf is very good but my favorite is HF, and a am a Fries! Thanks again for your great reaction and HF. have more Christmas song! 🤔🤔🧑🏽🎄🧑🏽🎄🎄🎄☃☃🙏🏽🙏🏽
Love it!! It’s my favorite version. Tim (bass) sounded so good. Just so you know Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and then sing up with the tenors. I think you’re hearing the vocal fry in his voice. Loved the beatboxing. Who would think the beatboxing would fit with this song but it does. Also Chance (far left) was doing bass this time. He’s the baritone/bass and can go low just not as low as Tim. Loved Austin and Rob too! Good reaction!!!😍😄 Merry Christmas to you and yours!
I thought so too at first but I listened to the Learning Tracks yesterday and Tim was doing the bass throughout the whole song, Chance was doing Baritone
I think some of that bass comes from Adam Chance and some of it comes from Adam Rupp, the beatboxer. No matter how many times I hear this song, when they sing, "The great...I AM," I get chills every time. To my ear, PTX sound is more hard or clear and I can't often tell the different voices apart (some of them sound a lot alike to me), but with HF I find their sound is warmer and a bit softer and each voice is individual and you can pick them out, but they still blend together so beautifully without losing that individuality.
@scottrogers7242, Well, actually, you would be surprised with Adam Rupp's range. Go watch one of his drum solo videos and will hear him hit those bass notes too.
Chance take on the bass when Tim sings.Home Free is rare to have 2 bass singers😊 Adam in the best beatboxer. He’s been beatboxing for over 23 years and says he always learning new sounds.
Oh, I enjoyed your reaction & analysis! As far as PTX vs HF... you're right; apples and oranges... both are good fruit. (I just prefer HF.) I, too, loved how the camera panned back up to The Star. Merry Christmas!
A few have mentioned in the comments that Chance was doing bass while Tim was singing lead and I thought so too at first because they often do it that way (espcially when singing live). But I listened to the Learning Tracks yesterday and Tim was doing the bass throughout the whole song, Chance was singing the baritone in the background. They obiously layered the voices.
The original song was written by Mark Lowery part of the Gaithers Gospel group. So this a contemporary Christmas Hymn . Home Free is my favorite version.
For some reason, the little sound Adam makes at the end of "The blind will see...the deaf will hear...etc." has always reminded me of the sounds a little baby sometimes makes while nursing or dreaming or yawning. And it fits so well with a song about a small, contented, newborn child. Has anyone else made this connection or am I over-thinking it?
I am a huge Home Fry but when this song came out last year I found the sound to be weird-and I still do. TBH, I find it a bit distracting.😮 EDIT: sounds like a snort
Lovely reaction, they do a sweet version, I love how they 'stand back and let the song speak'. Please check out Voctave with Mark Lowery's version, Mark wrote the song and there is a different kinda passion that comes from the singer being the writer.
I love this version of this song. These fellas are awesome. Thank you for your honest reactions. Bless you and your family. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎼🎶🌲🎵🦋
Beautiful version of this song. I have given up trying to pick a favourite. I just listen to them all and love them all. Great reaction Viking. Merry Christmas. ❤ from Ontario 🇨🇦
When Tim does not sing bass, quite often Adam Chance, the one with the beanie, will take over the bass part. He is an excellent bass in his own right. This version of "Mary did you know" is one of my favorites. It is not to even be compared with Pentatonix, because they do it so differently, it's like a different song.
This is so beautiful. 🥰 How it all starts with all the beautiful voices that blend so well. Every time one has the lead, the rest sing around it so beautifully and then build it up with so many layers is awesome. Sung with so much emotion. All supported by the incredible beatboxing and bass. It really hits you with the beautiful ending, the star of Bethlehem.🌟 What a cool arrangement. Here too they have taken it to another level.💖
Your comment about not having known that this was a Christmas song made me wonder about its origin. So I did some searching, and it turns out there's a tie to David Phelps, whose version of "O Holy Night" you just reacted to. The connection is through the Gaither Vocal Band. From Wikipedia: "Mary, Did You Know?" is a Christmas song addressing Mary, mother of Jesus, with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music written by Buddy Greene in 1991. It was originally recorded by Christian recording artist Michael English on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991. At the time, English and Lowry were members of the Gaither Vocal Band, and Greene was touring with them.[1] The song reached Number 6 on CCM Magazine's Adult Contemporary Chart.[2] Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 Christmas album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. The song has since gone on to become a modern Christmas classic, recorded by hundreds of artists over the years, across multiple genres.[1] Several recordings have reached the top ten in the Billboard R&B and Holiday charts. The song encourages contemplation of the relationship between Mary and her son, although some religious commentators have criticized the lyrics for downplaying Mary's own grace and understanding. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary,_Did_You_Know%3F
It is actually Chance that can also go very low. He does the bassline on this. You should listen to their song "Mayday". On that song you cannsee how low Chance can go and how high Tim can go
Tim started the song with his deep bass voice but he can also sing way up in the itinerate he has a five octave range… Adam chance also sings bass! Austin and Rob sing tenor usually and Adam Rupp the beat boxer also has a nice tenor voice sometimes he sings as well… You need to listen to Voctave singing this… The man that wrote the lyrics Mark Lowery sings them in this song! You can feel the passion of the words that he wrote when he sings!! Merry Christmas!
I LOVE this one. Now I'm wishing that I'd brought your attention to Mat & Savanna Shaw's version. Even if you don't have room to add it this time, maybe you could play it for your wife. It's SO good. Plus they also do "Breath of Heaven." Both were done for last year's Christmas, and I have loved them ever since. Thanks for a really great reaction to this version. GREAT JOB! Loved it! (Can you tell?) 😀
Great reaction to a great rendition of a great song! ❤️ May I request you react to For Kings and Country’s live performance in Phoenix of Little Drummer Boy! The energy is fantastic! And you haven’t listened to that song for your advent yet… ❤️

Chance does the bass line in this song, when Tim is singing Chance takes bass. Chance is the singer in the back left. Home Free IMO does 5his song warmer then PTX, PTX has to many High tenors to me give it a colder sound. Great reaction
Yeah, when PTX'S Mitch hits those higher notes they are grating on my ears but when Voctave's Kate hits those high whistle tones, I have no problem with it. Don't know why.🤷♀️ I cannot listen to some of PTX's songs because their high notes sound screachy/grating to me.
@@Rkbmomma I am totally in agreement with the PTX group as it stands these days. When Avi was there, I loved them. They basically fell apart, as far as I'm concerned, when he left, though for a little while (without the latest changes) they weren't too much different.
@shantellerossi8744 -- I agree. It would also be fun to do Amy's (original) version, and then listen to Mat & Savanna Shaw do their gorgeous version. That one competes VERY well. I love Amy, too, but Savanna...yeah!
Whenever Tim is singing lead, Chance takes the bassline (left rear in this video) . Most times, the swap is seamless.
Chance on the far left sings the bass in this whole song. My favorite version!
Home Free's ability to add movement to a song is excellent. Crescendos, diminuendos, faster, slower, movement with the beatboxer, chances in voices - all add to the feeling, the emotion of the song.
Amen
Great reaction it is the parts they choose to emphasize that makes the difference.
Beautifully done. ❤️🌲🇨🇦
Mary Did you know is one of the most cover songs.

Adam Chance the baritone is the one who does the base when Tim is singing lead. he is also incredibly deep with his bass.
Absolutely Love this version….it gives me chills…sooo Beautiful ✝️🙏✝️‼️
Oh, Adam (beat boxer) is one unbelievable human being….&, there’s just No one like him ❣️🔥❣️‼️

This was powerful
I love this version best but the writer of the song Mark Lowry, also sings with the acapella group VOCTAVE with a beautiful version as well.
Home Frees version is my favorite. I love these boys

Adam Chance takes over bass when Tim takes the lead
Home Frees version is the only one I've until the other day... i listened to PTX
And your thoughts were?????
The way they arranged "the great... I Am" was brilliant. Chills every time. They know how bring a song to its natural climax.
Chance can fill in as bass when Tim sings lead.
Absolutely.

One of my favorite Christmas covers from Home Free! I often forget there are no instruments.

But I listened to the Learning Tracks yesterday and Tim was doing the bass throughout the whole song, Chance was singing the baritone in the background. They obiously layered the voices.
The bass in the background is Mr. Chance, back left. Baritone/bass that wraps you in a warm, cozy blanket of sound.
The original song was written by Mark Lowery part of the Gaithers Gospel group. So this a contemporary Christmas Hymn . Home Free is my favorite version.
