Hey, you there, reading the comments -- it's become clear that I was WAY OFF in my guess at how old this particular Christmas song was (I'm also laughing at myself lol). I appreciate everyone taking the time to correct that error, but no need to be the 100th person to do so -- the first few comments settled that score very quickly 😂 I hope you enjoy the rest of the analysis!!
That's OK, Peter! I thought it was older too until Home Free came out with this incredible version but did some research & discovered the truth! Loved your analysis. Merry Christmas!
And then there are those carols that are really old, but people think are modern (as I've seen in reactions to Home Free's "Go Tell it on the Mountain")-- I think it all comes down to what you first heard the song. If it's part of your *own* early memories, it seems like it should be early in history. Also, to be fair, the melody is written in an "old sounding" scale, compared to most pop music.
Mark Lowry wrote this, in Dec 1996 Tim and Chance have been working together, so that may be the reason it sounds like Tim. 307 Reacts heard this song in concert, and said Chance was doing the bass, and that it sounded the same as the studio version, so I think it’s Chance doing the bass. Thank you for a great reaction. I have been hoping you would do this one. If you haven’t heard Do you Hear What I Hear, even for your own enjoyment. I hope you feel better soon.
I also suspect that those deep, rumbling, rolling bass tones you hear sporadically throughout (to such great effect, such as at the end of "the great...I AM") are being done by Adam Rupp because I've heard him do those exact tones in his recent beatboxing solos on stage in concert.
@@droid8472 that would be correct, he worte it fir a church play and then it was recorded in 1991 by a Mr English, then Mr Lowrey put it on his 1996 album and the rest is history
Home Free did such an excellent job with this!!! This has been a great month for innovative covers of old/traditional songs (big shoutouts to Geoff Castellucci and Tomi P + Casper Fox for their amazing covers as well). I really, really like how much artistic freedom they took to make this piece their own, while also staying true the core of the song. Bravi, tutti!
You really need to check out the Home Free cover of Mayday, really shows how crazy high Tim can go in his range and also a great bass line from Chance.
All the guys are remarkable, but I personally think Chance is the most underrated voice of the group. He does all the bass on this, and many others, but with a 4 octave range, his natural baritone just contributes so much, whether coveirng bass, harmony or lead. Having 2 quality basses, and 3 quality tenor voices, just gives them the flexibility to do just about any thing in any genre. Love this!
Chance is technically a bass-baritone. This gives him a stronger than average baritone range, while being able to actually go slightly lower than an average bass, too. An average bass only has a strong vocal weight to D2; Chance's vocal weight is still pretty strong to a B1. He can go slightly lower than even that, he just doesn't have Tim's vocal weight.
Peter, I’ve listened to several of your reactions and interpretations of Home Free songs, but without a doubt, I think this one for’Mary, Did You Know?’, is really one of the best!! I love Home Free, I really enjoy this songs & their messages ❤and as far as I’m concerned, you’re one of the best!! Here’s a suggestion - get their video of HF doing ‘Pretty Woman’. They are dressed to the nines w/gold lame’ jackets ’ (not sure how this is spelled - being a former Reference Librarian over 30 yrs. in Dallas & Salt Lake City, you’d think I’d look it up and verify !! Oh! I almost forgot a very important item in this video, Besides the gold jackets. They’ve all got pompadours!! Whoever styled their hair, and I think it was wives & girl friends, did an incredible job. They must have gotten a lot of laughs that day. Blessings and best wishes - and get well soon. Nelb
Mary Did You Know was actually released 1996 by Mark Lowry and Buddy Green they participates with the Gaither gospel music organization. I found it to be a beautiful piece. It gives a different aspect to the gift God gave mankind.
Mark wrote the lyrics in 1984. Buddy composed the music in 1991. It was recorded and released by Michael English in 1991. It mostly came mainstream when it was released by Kathy Mattea in 1993
Mark Lowry wrote this song "Mary Did You Know" in 1980. If you look for Voctave's version Mark Lowry sings with them. I think you will enjoy this version.
Beautiful song, made for these guys. Love the perfect harmonies of Home Free. The beginning of Tim is so beautiful. Someone once compared it to dark liquid chocolate, fantastic. It's also always fascinating how the guys can switch roles. Chance is great with his bass line. And Adam's beatboxing is out of this world. Love your detailed reactions, thanks for that!
So glad you reacted to this one! Enjoyed it so much! Hard to believe but I think Chance covers the low bass this whole song! These guys keep us interested with all their surprises!
"Hundreds of years...?" Try 1991... That may seem like centuries ago to a whippersnapper such as yourself, but for us old folks (57), that makes this a new song... This is one of the relatively few contemporary Christmas songs that I really enjoyed performing in a large men's chorus. Anyway, I couldn't help but get a chuckle from that chronological faux pas. Thanks for the comic relief...
I truly believe those really deep rumbling base sounds that you hear especially toward the end is Adam Rupp. It is just like the drop the bass segments at the very end of his drum solos
I haven't heard anyone talk about this.. but is anyone else hearing the quick, soft, little ah - ah -ah from Adam ? Why is nobody mentioning this ?? It's awesome !! Especially where he throws them in there.. You can almost miss it if you're not listening for it what with so much else going on to listen to...Try it again.. See if you can hear it..
I was scrolling through UA-cam and this year old video just happened to come through my playlist I'm so glad it did I really do hope I get to meet you one day
Listening closely, it sounds like there is some layering on this track. There is a section where you see all of them singing the lyrics but you still hear a sustained bass underneath. So I think that you are hearing both Tim and Chance.
Thank you for your wonderful reaction. I'm glad you picked up on the crazy beatboxing sounds that Adam had going on. There's no logical reason those sounds should work in such a traditional sounding song. But they totally work! As to the bassline, it's getting really hard to tell who is doing it unless you actually see them singing the part. Also, Adam Rupp has some very similar tones in his arsenal of vocal treasures. Again, so hard to say unless Home Free confirms it. Have a safe trip home. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
it is really hard to tell who is doing what and truthfully that's part of what I love about them. It gives them so much flexibility and fullness to their sound. They can have one singing bass, one doing the bass line, and one throwing in a bass drop all at the same time. Similarly, on the high end, you can have any 3 to 5 of them singing tenor at the same time. It's what makes Home Free unique
Really nice to hear a reaction from someone besides Elizabeth Zarhoff who is picking up the little things that are happening in the background of these songs. The thing that sets HF apart from PTX, to me, is Adam Rupp. You mentioned his beatbox sound effects in the vocal stops around the phrase "The blind will see....";, etc. You are the first reactor to notice this and I've watched a LOT of reactions. You never know what to expect from Adam. One thing you didn't mention (no one has, I don't think) was the choice to use the VERY OBVIOUS vocalists' taking breaths in the opening section. Most of the time, you don't want people to hear you breathe in...this time it was very obvious and an excellent arranging choice. Really enjoyed your reaction....subbed.
VERY much enjoy your informed & informative reactions to the various acapella groups (and individuals) releasing wonderful, and sometimes innovative, arrangements of songs. Sorry about the long(er) recovery from your cold. I'm sure it can be a significant problem for the singing part of your career. I'm glad you took the time to listen to the long interview Tim had with Elizabeth. I found it very interesting as well even though I feel like I know a fair amount about his background. Best of luck with all of your many endeavors. Enjoying the bass gang and each of the individuals who make it up. I REALLY enjoyed the cover of "The Summit" you and Bobby did awhile back.
That bass growl at 19:36 is - it sounds and looks to me - to be Adam Rupp. And the high sustained wails in Listen to the Music are him too. That man is amazing.
One of my favorites from this group is their cover of MayDay. It definitely shows a little more of Tim’s high range and Chance’s lower range since I believe chance is doing all the bass and has a little solo in that one
Thank you for your reaction. I appreciate when other artist can appreciate each other and show respect to the craft...grateful for that! I like your breakdown of what they did with the song and your kudos for them doing it well. I stopped watching you for a bit but came back when I noticed the "pit viper" wasn't playing such a strong part in your analysis (personnel preference there) Again, thanks for here the whole of the arrangement and hope you get to feeling better over your Christmas & Holiday break 🎄🤧☕🎄 Side note - - hope you sneak in our HF guys once in a while next year when your exploring the heavy metal other genres if ya can for us diehard hfries 😉
Another one to add to the list to listen to is you have not yet is Dive Bar Saints, one of Home Free original songs. Chance is the lead on it and it is a great end of the week song.
In 1984 Mark Lowry thought of the song but it was played first in 1991 while he was with Gaither Vocal Band. I think Chance had the bass because Tim was singing
Hi Peter, my name is Anthony, and I'm a huge fan of you and your channel. I know you might not read this but I promise it'll be worth it. Mark Lowry is the one who wrote this song in the late 1990's, (I believe 1996) and he is one of my favorite baritones in one of my favorite Southern Gospel groups, Gaither Vocal Band. If you really want to hear a beautiful group, listen to Gaither Vocal Band. My favorite song from them is "Sinner Saved By Grace" definitely worth a listen, and if possible, a reaction!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for those who are celebrating btw🙏🏼
As someone who's a huge fan of Home Free and Voiceplay and developing her own acapella arrangements, I really appreciate your technical explanations of technique. It's really helpful to understand the underlying concepts better, and you do a great job of breaking everything down in ways someone who hasn't gone to music school can understand. Thank you so much for your videos! I've been watching and subbed for awhile now but idk if I've ever commented. Between you, TCV, and Mortius, I feel like I'm getting such a better perspective on how my favorite acapella role models compose their covers.
Chance was an AWESOME bass in his prior group. When they perform Brothers in Arms, listen carefully and you'll here Chance & Tim are singing the bass line together.
You were asking about Chance's bass range - there's a track he did with Street Corner Symphony called Stay With Me where the comment sections says he's singing A1s - I'm no expert to be sure, but it sounds very good, whatever the exact note.
Home Free hve actually done "Mary Did U Kno?" twice now, 1's with the original band members & 2ndly with this lineup. Adam (beatboxer) did very Xcellant sound FX's in their 1st version as well.
Ok !! I spoke to soon.. You did catch the sounds I was talking about.. Not one other reactor that I've watched has brought that up.. I was beginning to think I was hearing things.. Thank you for removing those doubts..
Absolutely love the arrangement of this most beautiful song. It is, in fact, my favorite cover of this song, as they put their own spin on it. Brilliant, as usual! Thank you for reacting to this. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🎄🎉
Thiz rendition is beautiful. Have you ever listened to Pentatonix version of this? It was when Avi was still with them, so its been a minute. I'm glad you posted what you did about when the song came out lol I was about to mention it. I got to see Mark Lowery in concert, well his comedy sketch back in 97 I believe and he sang this. This song is my absolute all time favorite Christmas song. I sang it in church a few times but the track I sang to was a rendition that started with the traditional Christmas song O Holy Night, then led into Mary DidYouKnow, then wrapped up with O Holy Night. So, anyway thank you as always for your commentary and wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
Thank you Peter for another great analysis! As a frontline hospital worker, the past few years have nearly broken me but I've found comfort in getting back to my vocal roots and allowing music to soothe my soul. As a contralto, I've always been drawn to the lower notes and I appreciate your insights as a bass singer. If you're looking to branch out a bit, I'd love to get your take on Johnny Cash's version of Hurt (originally written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails). It's not the most technically proficient vocally, but in my opinion, it is one of the most heartfelt, raw, and beautifully haunting performances of all time.
Hey Yvie As an elderly aunt from OZ please don't shatter. I understand (mostly) how hard it is for northern Americans and their carers. But from us in Oz full support and appreciation for all you do. We all "know" how important you are at this time. oxoxo
Frontline workers deserve more than applause and pizza. Thank you for doing what you do, saving lives is critical at any time, but especially now. Blessings to you and all of your cohorts during this difficlt time. Wish there was more I could do for all of y'all!
When you said those base "boom, boom, boom." had Tim's feel to them. Watching the video we can see Chance move his head down with the notes. He can hit those notes well. If you've seen Mayday, you know what I mean. But yes, I thought that was Tim just hearing it too. They seem to have started working that in more.
Peter when Adam does his little sound effects at the end of each post to be it's like he's putting. ( ! ) point adding more emphasis great reaction Peter
Thank you for doing such an excellent analysis of technique and thoughtful explanation of the why's and how's of the piece. You're always informative while also clearly enjoying the beauty of the music. It doesn't hurt, that you have a voice made to listen to. Feel better and Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you for the analysis and reaction. I love the close harmony that Home Free does. My favorite part is the lead up to and singing of “I AM”. Merry Christmas
Nope, this one isn't very old. Written by Mark Lowry in 1984. Music in 1991 by Buddy Greene. And originally recorded in 1991 by Michael English. This 'tube vid is in mono, for some reason. Sounds much better in stereo.
Good reaction. I always learn stuff from you... I'm just over the bridge from Philly in south Jersey. Philly is getting wild lately, be careful out there..
Hi Peter, as always, your analysis is insightful and I learned something. Thank you. I would really love for you to do the reaction/analysis of Tim‘s recent solo Come go with me (actually, I‘d love your take on the whole album, as it get‘s freakier and freakier with each song) and Tim and Austin‘s take on My Maria. I‘d like a bass singer to explain to me, in small words, what‘s goin‘ on, cause I don‘t understand. Please and thank you.
I think I heard Chance has a 4 octave range, so 1 octave less than Tim. Yeah, with as traditional as the song normally sounds, lyrics written and music composed at the close of the 20th century. The first rendition I heard was in the late 90's by Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers it has been my favorite in all it's iterations since then and this updated version joins that list. Loved your reaction. I missed a lot of what you pointed out and will listen again with educated ears.
Thank you for this breakdown. When you return in the New Year it would be great if you could react to Home Free's Auld Lang Sine. Merry Christmas. Cheers!
I love the way you analyze these songs in your reactions. You say so many things that I'm thinking when listening to these songs. I would love to see you do a reaction to Tim Fousts rendition of Cant help falling in love. It is a very beautiful cover and I love what he did with his vocal arrangements in that song! This is a great rendition of this classic song but I think Cee Lo's version hits the hardest for me emotionally but the I love the way they arranged this song and the ending is beautiful. I would also love to see you a reaction to one of William Singes songs. I would love to hear your take on his vocal arrangements.
What a beautiful rendition of this beautiful song, and as always, a great review. I love your analyses and although I don't comment, I watch them all! I am a fan of both Home Free and Pentatonix, and in this case, I prefer the PTX version of Mary Did You Know. Have you checked it out? It's from Avi's time, but it's stunning. Would love to get your take on it. Also, their version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is such fun.
Merry Christmas Happy New Year! You cut off the video a little early it shows the North Star over the manger. Kudos to their producer he is phenomenal! I've been a Homefry for years!! They are wonderful live and they are on tour!!

You were asking about Chance's bass range - there's a track he did with Street Corner Symphony called Stay With Me where the comment sections says he's singing A1s - I'm no expert to be sure, but it sounds very good, whatever the exact note.
Angels We Have Heard on High is one of their Christmas songs that doesn't get much attention. I hope you will consider reacting to it this year.
Can you also react to the version of this song sung by Pentatonix?
"Mary Did You Know?" Love Pentatonix, Home Free and the songwriter Mark Lowry with Voctave versions.
I know Tim has been working with Chance on sub harmonics as well as extending his range
Listen for the air in Tim's voice especially in the quieter lows.
Have you seen Pentatonix's version of "Mary Did You Know?" It's amazing!!!
"Hurt" hits my heart every time I see/hear the Cash video.
Hey Yvie
As an elderly aunt from OZ please don't shatter.
Peter, I love your deep talking voice 👂❤👍and I love Home Free ❤ Tim Foust is just amazing 😮😮😮
Thank You for your great reaction…..&…..HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR ‼️🎄❄️☃️❄️🎄
Peter when Adam does his little sound effects at the end of each post to be it's like he's putting. ( ! ) point adding more emphasis great reaction Peter
Thank you for doing such an excellent analysis of technique and thoughtful explanation of the why's and how's of the piece. You're always informative while also clearly enjoying the beauty of the music. It doesn't hurt, that you have a voice made to listen to. Feel better and Merry Christmas 🎄
Love this analysis!! Merry Christmas!!
I love this version so much. As always love your reaction analysis and can't wait to see where u head from here with stuff.
Mary did you know from pentatonix!!
Thank you for the analysis and reaction. I love the close harmony that Home Free does. My favorite part is the lead up to and singing of “I AM”. Merry Christmas
Great reaction, enjoy your holidays at home - be safe.
Beautiful version for sure! 😊
I would like to see you do "Snowglobe".
It's an original by Tim, and full of surprises. 😉☺
I suggest monster mash by Geoff, it has a very surprising note (I'm not going to say anything)
It's Chance. They show him and his mouth positions look like those words
Don't forget about Adam Rupp. Believe it or not, Rupp can throw out some bass.
Thanks!
I am not sure if you are familiar with Nightwish!? If not you must see! Their talents are amazing!
Very nice reaction. Good breakdown.
This is a wonderful version of the song. Was surprised it wasn't an old song as well. Either way it's great.☺️
I also thought Tim was doing so much more of the bass. I was told that some of the bigger moments were actually Adam Rupp.
Now you need to listen to Mary did you know by Pentatonix
Thank you for a really good reaction. I enjoy your take on HF and their amazing music. Hope you feel better soon. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
And now I have a new song to hunt down! 😁
Adam holds the bass when Tim is solo
Cheers!
Of course this is phenomenal but the sounds from Adam are totally keeping me entertained.
have you listened to Adam Rupp;s live percussion solo? he is awesome!
You mentioned the interview with Tim and called him "Geoff" in the explanation of how experienced he is??
Enjoyed your analysis.
