@@ravagingwolverine aye, I appreciate the original for what it is, a great, albeit flawed version of the game with amazing graphics for its time and an excellent soundtrack. Joe, thank you for doing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games! We TMNT fans are finally getting the Cowabunga Collection, and we even got the best game in a long time, Shredder’s Revenge! Once again, thank you so much!
7:40 In TMNT3 The Manhattan Project, in order to do a special move, you actually need to press jump first, and then immediately press attack, then it will do the special attack, if you press the jump and attack at the exact same time it actually won't work. That's probably why sometimes you want to do the mid air attack but it ends up doing a special attack.
Ya know, I think a TMNT metroidvania could really work with good combat and art style. The 4-Turtle dynamic could really work, with drop in/out co-op and fun abilities etc. Might be a decent alternative to beat em ups, which even tho Shredders Revenge did fantastically, has been the only real style done really, really well with the franchise unfortunately. I don't think it's the only possible genre.
Shredder's Revenge is by far my favorite Turtles game. Sure, it uses a 16-bit art style, but it's very much a modern game, and it does a lot of things that could not have been pulled off in the 16-bit era, even in the arcade.
I remember playing some of these NES TMNT games since I had a bootleg cart featuring the 4 NES games, and years later I played the 2007 Ubisoft game on PS2, as well as the PS2 version of Smash-Up.
The fact that you used Pizza Power from the Pizza Hut cassette Coming out of Our Shells just makes this all the, more legit. Best episode of Game Sack ever!
@@livefreeprintguns It was a suggestion, not a demand. Seriously though... what's the problem with just waiting until the next day to watch a video that gets uploaded late? Do you think you're gonna miss out on something? Have you never heard of delayed gratification?
Turtles in Time was the pinnacle of old school TMNT games. Shredder's Revenge raised the bar for modern beat 'em ups and the TMNT license too. Game was fun to play, music bangs every minute I hear it, and hearing the old cast is awesome!
I'm impressed, Joe. You seem to be pretty familiar with the Mirage comics. Very nice! That image of Raph leaping has been reproduced in a lot of incarnations.
Man I grew up on the original TMNT game on the NES, this really takes me back. It was the only TMNT game out at the time and it was hard as nails to play, I reckon that one would give Battletoads a run for it's money in terms of difficulty. Loved all the other entries, especially the arcade games and Turtles in Time, good stuff!
Y'all might wanna check out 2013's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the shadows. On the 360, PC, and ps3. It was mainly a side scrolling beat em up and the combat was like a slightly wonky Batman Arkham game. The turtles felt more ninja like than in the previous games. Their combat felt more brutal. It was certainly one of the better TMNT games I had played in a long time... I'm looking it up now and Activision pulled it from digital stores in 2017... It was digital only. RIP out of the shadows... I never did beat you. Activision. F U
I mentioned it in a different comment but you can play it on a PS3 emulator quite easily if you want to go that route. That's what I did when I saw a unredeemed PC code going for $400.
OotS was a buggy mess when it released but the fundamentals were excellent. Iirc, the PS3 version was eventually patched which improved performance somewhat. I played it on PS3 and I remember struggling with it initially but eventually returning and having a great experience. I’m still disheartened that I was never able to experience it via online co-op, with someone playing each of the turtles. I think it had the best characterization of the turtles of any game. The combat was very deep and well designed. It definitely has the best team attacks of any turtles game. I also LOVE that they got the rights to use “Turtle Power” by Partners in Kryme. It’s really a shame that it was so maligned by critics upon release and never recovered. I honestly believe that most people who continue to disparage it either never gave it a fair shake or never played it and are simply parroting the media sentiment.
Future Game Sack episodes I’d like to see: Games That Make The Console Look Weak 4 Donkey Kong (Intellivision) Ghostbusters (NES) Galaxy Force 2 (Genesis) Shrek Treasure Hunt (PSone) Myth Makers: Super Kart GP (PS2 and Wii) Cid The Dummy (PS2 and Wii) Better on 8 bit than 16 bit James Pond 2: Codename Robocod (Master System vs SNES) Ultima (Master System vs SNES) Batman: Return/Revenge of The Joker (NES vs Genesis) Double Dragon 1 and 2 (NES vs Genesis) Better on 16 bit than 32 bit Mortal Kombat 2 (Genesis/SNES vs Saturn/PSone) Mr. Nutz (Genesis vs Game Boy Advance) Comix Zone (Genesis vs Game Boy Advance) Chrono Trigger (SNES vs PSone)
Really excited for the Cowabunga Collection, grew up playing most of those games so the nostalgia can pick up the slack when the game play gets repetitive. Would really love a follow up that includes the later Konami titles based on the 2003 series as I never got a chance to play them but was always curious as the show was rather decent. Still I'm thrilled with the fact we're even getting a collection at all.
Now this is what I'm talking about, the complete turtles package...I wish they put all these games on 1 Nintendo switch cart or at least a cowabunga collection 2 🙏🏽👍🏾🤘🏾i really like TMNT on the Gameboy advance its fun
I had a Genesis growing up. I loved Hyperstone Heist, but definitely also loved getting to play Turtles in Time when I went to my friend’s house. I have a real soft spot for Tournament Fighters on Genesis. I know it’s pretty trash mechanically and I could never get anywhere in the single player, but my dad and I had so much fun playing against each other. I was always Ralph and he was Mikey.
Growing up the '89 Arcade game was the first one I played and as much as I loved TMNT II: The Arcade Game and the arcade rendition of Turtles in Time I had the most fun with the '89 Arcade game, The Manhattan Project, and the SNES port of Tournament Fighters.
Shredders revenge is definitely my favorite. Awesome animation, controls, graphics, sound design and music. Man, there's some damn good tunes in that one. I find myself humming the shit all the time, even when its been days since I've last played.
The NES version of TMNT 2 actually had 2 levels that the arcade game didn't have. The snow level, and the Japanese pagoda level with the tigers and monkeys.
TMNT 2 The Arcade Game on NES, Turtles In Time on Super NES and Shredder’s Revenge are my all time favorites. I love your content man. Keep up the awesome job. Take care, Joe
Shredder's Revenge was actually developed by Tribute Games, a studio made up of former Ubisoft Montreal staff who also worked on Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. Perhaps the best Post Credit scene I've seen from Sack in a while lol!
I like hyperstone because of the dedicated run button. You can clear enemies on command by run, roll then attack without waiting for a couple of seconds to run(turtles in time).
Turtles In Time - My Departed Brothers friend brought this round with the adapter cartridge to play on the SNES. It amazed me back in the days. Still a great game decades later.
It took them twenty + years to make the tmnt game everyone wanted; a sequel to turtles in time. I got a call from my tweenager self back in 1995, and he said he wanted that over ternament fighter
turtles' toys were AMAZING. they were the only toys you immediately smashed on the pavement when you bought them. after that you put em back together so they could lose limbs in battles, toys afterwards didn't have that feature and that quickly made me grow out of them.
@@GameSack It is horrendous! I still have it downloaded on my PS3 (I believe it got delisted some time ago). It doesn't control well, the enemies feel 'mushy', it's a remake of the arcade version so it's missing the SNES exclusive content and most unforgivably... the music was completely redone, replacing the iconic original's soundtrack with some utterly generic nonsense! There was also TMNT: Out of the Shadows on PS3 and Xbox360... it is also not good!
The original TMNT platformer on NES gave me the same reactions as the original AVGN review from 2006. Namely, alot of swearing at all the BS platforming and the hard game over back to the start of the game if you die on all 4 of the turtles. If you didn't have a game genie or the patience of a saint, you had no chance.
ya they made those games very unforgiving for no reason imo. and that made them not fun to play. the tmnt for nes is one game i will not be playing a hole lot in the collection
Hey Joe, I really love that retro look effect you've used in that one scene. Was this difficult to make? Great episode. I was disappointed back then when the first 3D TMNT came out. The early 90s games have been so much fun to play and the idea playing Turtles in 3 D sounded great on paper. BTW. there was one game missing, the Turtles In Time Re-Shelled Version which came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 (which IMHO have been like a slap in the face). The Cowabunga Collection is a great way for the old folks as for younger people to live through the classic games. And I love that Shredders Revenge also came out as physical version.
@@Bubba__Sawyer The sarcasm is, that he asked if I watched the whole video. And in the very beginning Joe said he is going to review every TMNT game. So, I could say that he hasn't watched the whole video. Second, I wrote that there was that one game missing, nothing about Joe missed it. If we now analyze every word about who said or wrote what, it is becoming a neverending story.
Great video. But I was mildly disappointed that you missed one game for the PC. TMNT 2: The Manhattan Missions by Konami in 1991. It was a bit different than the other games. A platformer that allowed you to cycle through the turtles and fight a variety of enemies and stages. I believe that this game was the first to debut the Triceratons, who are another alien enemy that resemble Triceratops dinosaurs. They show up only in one episode of the original 1987 series but are more prominent in later series.
@@KasumiKenshirou OK, so their debut in non-comic media. I figured they must have been featured in the comics earlier than 1991. The episode of the 1987 series where they show up was first broadcast in 1993.
Perfect timing for this feature with the Cowabunga Collection so close. It was a fun trip back in time recalling when I played most of these games for the first time. Of course Turtles in Time SNES and Shredder’s Revenge are top-tier. My own ranking has The Manhattan Project just below these. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Gen6 (the first release for PS2/GCN/XB) isn’t far behind that for me. Sure, there’s been some Turtle Stinkers, but by and large? The games have largely done well by the IP.
Why not just watch the video first and then leave a relevant comment after instead of rushing straight to the comments the second the video is uploaded?

Oh man you brought a smile to my face with the "Pizza Power" song from the Coming Out of our Shells tour. I saw that show back when I was 5 with my dad. Great old memory
they're easily missed downloadable titles that are no longer available to purchase due to licensing issues. no point telling people whether a game is worth buying if its not available to buy
"The turtle designs just get worse, and worse... What's up with that." Whatever you do, if you care about TMNT, don't watch Rise of the Ninja Turtles. Dear Lord... Not only are the designs the worst of all time, but they even switch the personalities, character roles, races, weapons, sexes. You name it. Everything about the original is changed. Can you say "Raph is the leader now, and he no longer has his sai?"
In summary: if it's on 8 or 16 bit consoles or arcade, it's worth playing. Everything else after that but Shredder's Revenge is hot garbage and a hard skip. Sounds about right.
One last thing. For Shredder's Revenge on PC, the music is easily replicable. They are just sitting in a folder within the installation location. Just take out the OGG file(s) you want to replace and put in your own and rename it appropriately. I inserted all the remixes I have from older games. Did have to raise the volume of my files or they would be too quiet even with the music volume at max. Also, they get wiped if the game has an update. Learned that one the hard way.
Good to know about the updates messing up the modifications. I'll have to keep it in mind. I haven't gotten around to playing Shredder's Revenge(hardware issues and bad timing), but being able to replace music is something I appreciate and was a selling point. There's some stuff in there that doesn't really work for me from what I've heard. Good that the developers made it so simple to do and I think it will make a big difference for me.
"The comic was edgy for it's time." - Let's be honest, it would be edgy as hell in 2022. The SJW crowd wouldn't be able to handle that comic right now. There would be "REEEEEEEEE!!!!!" all over the internet.
You're a pretty good comic artist, Joe! I definitely like the improvements you made. Also, the Cowabunga Collection also has online netplay for the arcade games and SNES version of Tournament Fighters.
Tmnt is a huge part of my childhood, I used have tons of toys, played the videogames a lot, especially the first game, I probably put 100 hours back in the day trying to beat it. I dressed as Donatello for halloween in '90. The Turtles movie was the very first time I went to see a movie in theater.
My first experience was the Arcade game at a local diner. I was absolutely floored by how amazing it was and true to the comics, so imagine my shock when my friend told me that he had gotten Turtles for his NES one day and I came over to see THAT first game... For the longest time I thought I was alone in finding it inferior since I had been so dissapointed back then, but had it been an unlicensed game with different characters, I think I would be all over it as an underrated Konami hidden gem today. You're right, it's not really all that bad of a game. Great video as always.
When you talked about drawing the ninja turtles that brought back some memories, I'd guess I'm of a similar age. Anyway I used to draw the ninja turtles I'd draw anything tbh I just loved drawing back then, my mother still has a picture I drew of them when I was probably about 12 maybe 13 years old.
This is just me guessing about the "heroes in a half-shell" part, but I think the lyric comes from the fact that now the Turtles are mutated into humanoid state, they can't hide themselves entirely into their shells like normal turtles would.
Fun Fact: Tribute Games, the developers of Shredders Revenge, was founded by some of the people that worked on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, and the previously mentioned TMNT on GBA.
I loved playing “Shredder’s Revenge.” It actually got me interested enough in the property to get the complete box set of the ’80s cartoon and watch it for the first time.
Heroes in a half shell is because they are actually only in half of a turtle shell. The hard underside of the shell isn’t there on them. Their chest is yellow but its not a shell, just regular skin but yellow instead of green. That is why on the show their back shell doesn’t connect to their front like on a real turtle.
I played some of these games. My favorite is TMNT 3 for NES, Turtles in time for the Arcade and SNES. Turtles 1 for PS2 wasn't that great, but funny with them saying "Bang zoom" "Slice and dice". Turtles 1 for NES was super hard for me on the hardware, but I think I will try it again on an emulator with save states.
I'll never forget playing the original arcade game in the nickel arcade with my dad.

WOW! I didn't know Tribute Games did it! I've been following that developer for years and I've always enjoyed their indie titles like Ninja Senki or Wizorb... you just blew my mind, thanks!
I wasn't expecting a new Game Sack episode at 3:30am but here we are and I'm here for it.
Same lol I’m assuming he lives on the west coast
Colorado
Or you could just wait until the next day to watch it....
@@Bubba__Sawyer Make me commie. 😤
Seeing and hearing Turtles in Time in an arcade or movie theater for the first time is an unforgettable experience.
Best memory ever. Plus it is timeless, and fun to play. Crazy its been forever ago.
Activision. F U
Not to mention that game may have the best soundtrack of any turtle game and is probably one of the best video game soundtracks ever.
@@scabdidlybastard Alot of people compared it to the old beat em ups and never really tried to look deeper past the intial couple of levels
Surprised it wasnt mentioned in this video. It even had an arcade mode if I’m not mistaken.
Sweet fan art, Joe! Great video, as always!
Future Game Sack episodes I’d like to see:
Games That Make The Console Look Weak 4
Donkey Kong (Intellivision)
Ghostbusters (NES)
Galaxy Force 2 (Genesis)
Shrek Treasure Hunt (PSone)
Myth Makers: Super Kart GP (PS2 and Wii)
Cid The Dummy (PS2 and Wii)
Better on 8 bit than 16 bit
James Pond 2: Codename Robocod (Master System vs SNES)
Ultima (Master System vs SNES)
Batman: Return/Revenge of The Joker (NES vs Genesis)
Double Dragon 1 and 2 (NES vs Genesis)
Better on 16 bit than 32 bit
Mortal Kombat 2 (Genesis/SNES vs Saturn/PSone)
Mr. Nutz (Genesis vs Game Boy Advance)
Comix Zone (Genesis vs Game Boy Advance)
Chrono Trigger (SNES vs PSone)
I had both of the first NES games!!! Made for some of the most memorable times in my childhood...
I like how you can view a full game playthrough within the game itself. In case you don’t feel like playing but still wanting to watch gameplay
...I knew the radio buddy thing was gunna played in the skit .... I just knew it! Lol
I'd love to see a new 2D game based on the 2003 series
Growing up the '89 Arcade game was the first one I played and as much as I loved TMNT II: The Arcade Game and the arcade rendition of Turtles in Time I had the most fun with the '89 Arcade game, The Manhattan Project, and the SNES port of Tournament Fighters.
Shredders revenge is definitely my favorite. Awesome animation, controls, graphics, sound design and music. Man, there's some damn good tunes in that one. I find myself humming the shit all the time, even when its been days since I've last played.
Tee Lopes just knows the heart, and soul of every project he creates a soundtrack for.
The arcade game is the best (nes tmnt 2)
Excellent coverage on the entire series. Including the titles that had pros and cons
Plus Shredder's Revenge. A modern masterpiece
Shredder's Revenge was actually developed by Tribute Games, a studio made up of former Ubisoft Montreal staff who also worked on Scott Pilgrim Vs the World.
Perhaps the best Post Credit scene I've seen from Sack in a while lol!
actually playing through most these games with niece and nephews, the lids still love these games.
I like hyperstone because of the dedicated run button. You can clear enemies on command by run, roll then attack without waiting for a couple of seconds to run(turtles in time).
Weirdos snes fans dismiss the game “because it’s not turtles in time!” They missed out honestly. I hope they fanboys give it a shot on the collection.
Turtles In Time - My Departed Brothers friend brought this round with the adapter cartridge to play on the SNES. It amazed me back in the days. Still a great game decades later.
TMNT 3 - The Manhattan Project TBH gets a bad wrap. It's flawed, but definitely fun.
I've never seen anyone diss the game, I tend to see the game get praised. I own a copy, and I pretty much love playing it myself.
It took them twenty + years to make the tmnt game everyone wanted; a sequel to turtles in time. I got a call from my tweenager self back in 1995, and he said he wanted that over ternament fighter
12 minutes in and this is one of my favorite episodes ever 🤘 so super rad thanks Joe!
And I agree about the achievement notifications but if you are going for the challenges it's nice to get so you know to start over lol
Turtles in time = 🐐
turtles' toys were AMAZING.
they were the only toys you immediately smashed on the pavement when you bought them.
after that you put em back together so they could lose limbs in battles, toys afterwards didn't have that feature and that quickly made me grow out of them.
Thx for making videos Joe
I think it's awesome that you show your old drawings, Joe! Thanks for sharing!
Great video! I missed the Turtles In Time remake, though.
That game looks horrendous.
Platinum's Turtles? Damn I wish it had the same appeal as Metal Gear Rising and Transformers Devastation!
One thing I did love about the Mega Drive and SNES games was you could change the colour of the turtles from cartoon to comic versions.
Joe said he didn't cover every game. Did you watch the whole video?
@@BigSnipp I love your sarcasm 👍
@@melancholas That wasn't sarcasm, he was correcting you 👍
@@Bubba__Sawyer The sarcasm is, that he asked if I watched the whole video. And in the very beginning Joe said he is going to review every TMNT game. So, I could say that he hasn't watched the whole video. Second, I wrote that there was that one game missing, nothing about Joe missed it.
If we now analyze every word about who said or wrote what, it is becoming a neverending story.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist is my favourite game on the Sega Genesis. Thumbs up for this episode.
The Triceratons came from the original Mirage Studios comics, and they actually even predate the Turtles themselves.
Disappointed is probably a strong word, I am guessing you are "surprised."
I pre ordered the Cowabunga collection months ago…..can’t wait!!
Manhattan Project and Tournament Fighters for the NES are my favorite turtles games and two of my all time favorite NES games.
This is going to be good! Hopefully, he'll also review the new TMNT game as well.
Why not just watch the video first and then leave a relevant comment after instead of rushing straight to the comments the second the video is uploaded?
Me and my best friend Ismari Montes love Playing TMNT Games.
My best friend Ismari had TMNT on Wii and 3DS and Tmnt Shadder's Revenge on Switch.
For me my favorite tmnt video game was TMNT Arcade, TMNT on 3DS, TMNT 1 and 2 on Game Boy, TMNT 2 and 3 on NES, TMNT 4 on SNES and TMNT Shadder's Revenge on PS4
I’m so happy for you that you stayed well clear of TMNT OOTS (XBLA) - it’s the biggest serving of garbage on a half shell of all time. Great episode as always!
Oh man you brought a smile to my face with the "Pizza Power" song from the Coming Out of our Shells tour. I saw that show back when I was 5 with my dad. Great old memory
You missed Out of the Shadows and that god awful Turtles in Time-remake.
I don't remember promising that every game would be covered.
they're easily missed downloadable titles that are no longer available to purchase due to licensing issues. no point telling people whether a game is worth buying if its not available to buy
@@GameSack You clearly said at the start " I will be covering every game"
@@GameSack well played Joe from game sack
Out of the shadows was glitchy broken fun.
I like how on the arcade versions u can press the start button n it gives u extra lives
"The turtle designs just get worse, and worse... What's up with that."
Whatever you do, if you care about TMNT, don't watch Rise of the Ninja Turtles. Dear Lord... Not only are the designs the worst of all time, but they even switch the personalities, character roles, races, weapons, sexes. You name it. Everything about the original is changed.
Can you say "Raph is the leader now, and he no longer has his sai?"
Yeah I saw a trailer for that and felt I needed to take some Adderall or something.
My favorite TMNT fact is that the 80s cartoon theme song was written by Chuck Lorre, the guy who made The Big Bang Theory.
In summary: if it's on 8 or 16 bit consoles or arcade, it's worth playing. Everything else after that but Shredder's Revenge is hot garbage and a hard skip.
Sounds about right.
He liked Mutant Nightmare
He didn't say that, he said that they were of varying quality.
The irony is the edge was part of the joke, OG Turtles was never meant to be taken seriously.
TMNT Arcade on NES actually had 2 new levels. Along with the ice level, there’s also the dojo level right before the Technodrone.
Nice drawings!! I was lucky enough once to see some sketches (and a failed test) hanging on the wall of Peter Lairds high school
Funny enough, the same devs that did the TMNT game for the Game Boy Advance also made Shredder's Revenge!
That floating head vanilla ice scared the shit outta me!!
I loved playing “Shredder’s Revenge.” It actually got me interested enough in the property to get the complete box set of the ’80s cartoon and watch it for the first time.
You're in for a treat. My favorite episode is the one when Shredder thinks he's mikey. Always cracks me up
Heroes in a half shell is because they are actually only in half of a turtle shell. The hard underside of the shell isn’t there on them. Their chest is yellow but its not a shell, just regular skin but yellow instead of green. That is why on the show their back shell doesn’t connect to their front like on a real turtle.
Turtles 3 The Manhattan Project was incredible. I poured countless hours into that game back in 92-93. Certainly one of my favorites on the NES.
They actually added two levels into Turtles 2 on the NES. The snow level and the dojo.
