    Thanks for the excellent and thoughtful review, Katie! I've had one of these for a couple years now and it works great. I use it daily and haven't had any issues yet. I often sand parts for acoustic guitars so it uses the full width of the drum and the woods are hard (e.g. Indian Rosewood and Pau Ferro). The machine doesn't have any problem handling this. The important thing, as you said, is to listen to the machine and set the depth/speed of cut appropriately.

    Had a performax about 20 years ago and loved it. Then one day I had some long strips for edgebanding get crossed over because I had something in the way about 8 feet from machine as they were feeding out. Caused the feed belt to come off track and tear and machine was never the same. Recently I came across a used SuperMax. Much better than my old performax even though was mostly the same. Use it on every project I do again. Dust collector must be cleaned frequently because if you lose suction it will be a death sentence for your sanding roll. Discipline and patience to use slow speed and not try to run too much at a time. Great video and good luck!

      Thanks for watching and sharing! It’s really been a game changer and my hands appreciate a little less orbital sander time lol. I totally agree about discipline and patience. Woodworking in general is a great practice of that.

    Thanks for the review! I ended up buying the smaller version, supermax16X32 because I'm in a two car garage shop. I originally had some regrets, but I really haven't needed the extra size...yet! I will also say that for some reason yours doesn't look like it takes much more room than mine does but maybe that's just the camera.

      Thanks for watching! I remember comparing the sizes and it wasn’t a huge difference so I went for the 19-38. I think either one is great!

    good review, thanks. I have an older Performax, which is pretty similar, but obviously the is a little nicer than the standard Performax. I used mine for 15 years and ran thousands of feet of wood thru it. (Tens of thousands). I find lots of folks gripe about it, and true, there are problems, but if you just do it enough, it works VERY well. There are some optional devices for the Performax that are very good. One is the optional leveling device, that allows you to adjust the angle that the arm is over the table. Using that, you CAN adjust the drums to be very consistent in height over the bed and be quite acceptable, sounds like this comes with it. I use lots of grits. You have to get good at it. I use 60 thru 180. About 18 years ago, I finally went and got the narrowest Wide belt to replace it. I bought the open ended version of this also, and can't say enough about it. All the 16" wide open ended wide belts are basically the same thing, but I bought the Sunhill one, (no longer around, but it was made in Taiwan by the same mfg as makes the Jet. I liked my Performax a lot, and still have it and occasionally still use it. But I LOVE my mini wide belt. They are certainly much more expensive, about $7K. But my oh my. The paper last so much longer, and it sands at more than twice as fast as any drum can do. Considering how much time you spend sanding, that is very important. I tend to use my sander for thicknessing any nice wood. I now sand ALL wood to the thickness I want BEFORE I cut anything to exact size. It just works so quickly and well, obviously with no tear out. But one of the biggest advantages is the speed of changing belts. I can change a belt in less than 30 seconds. I am fast with my performax, but it still probably takes 4 or 5 minutes, on average. This means that I change grits much more easily and am not adverse to work thru all the grits. My only problem ever was overloading the machine. Do that more than about a dozen times when it stalls out, (mine was 5 hp) then you often need to replace the necklace of the motor. Having done that about 3 times, last year I finally switched the bad motor for a 3 phase motor. GREAT switch. Now no problems. And YES, for sandpaper that gets gummed up, wash them outside with simple green! Saves you a lot of money!

      Thanks for watching and sharing! You’re encouraging me to buy more grits and get even more use out of the machine. Definitely going to try the simple green on my current roll. I’ve gotten a lot of great tips after sharing this video 🙂

    Interesting video. Thanks for posting it. I wonder if your dust collector isn’t sucking enough. You should have that much dust on the inside. Drum sanders need a lot of suction continuously and many get clogged easily with the fine sanding dust and loose suction quickly.

    Question for you Katie: Does this machine produce any snipe on the ends like a planer can do? Also, the folks at StuMac soak their drum sandpaper in a cleaning solution that is basically like simple green cleaner. They said they get much more life from a roll of paper.

    • @carpenterkatieco
      @carpenterkatieco  2 місяці тому

      It leaves a nice, smooth surface if you’re not too aggressive with it. If you try to take too much off in one pass, that’s where you can run into issues. I started doing the simple green soak as well! It’s easy to do and nice to reuse the rolls.

    When trying to clean belt with the rubber eraser you need to have the drum spinning. Then lay the edge of eraser on sandpaper and move it along the whole length. This is what cleans the dust off paper

    • @carpenterkatieco
      @carpenterkatieco  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! I had the drum spinning but it still wasn’t coming clean. I probably let it build up too much 😬

      @@carpenterkatieco try pressing the eraser harder against the drum and paper. I’ll usual lay the side of eraser on edge of unit and rotate eraser onto drum and using other hand to put pressure so the eraser gets chewed up. The wood dust should come right off. Also another trick I have used when you see burnt on dust on belt is to use a sharp single edge razor blade and skin the surface like sharpening a chisel. This cuts off the burnt line and you can use sandpaper longer. I usually keep 120 grit on mine and if needed for figured wood will change out to 150 grit. I have the 25-50 and love it. If you have problems with alignment of drum to bed I have a few tricks that I use. Just let me know. Great intro video

    I take my belts and put them in simple green 50/50 in a container and leave them a few hours to a few days depending. I take a wire brush or nylon brush to clean the abrasive. Even burned in wood and pitch will come off. The cleaning stick should be used frequently. Higher pitch woods like pine every few boards.

      @@sbumpus4513 where'd you get that rule from? Years ago I used to use dedicated bit/blade cleaners, but many on Lumberjocks convinced me that simple green does the job well. I have been using it on my blades and router bits for years. When I brought my Forrest WWII blade in for sharpening, Tony said it was clean but dull... That's what I would expect after 10 years of near daily use. I also have a machine shop here in my basement. I use Simple Green to clean a lot of tooling. I take it you are an expert, and am sure some where you heard it's not good for carbide.. Not sure where, but you're the expert. I have one of my ripping blades in Simple Green, maybe I better rush to take it out... it might ruin it.. NOT. You experts are always right.. Watch a few youtube videos and well, you are the expert.

    Dont meant to be rude or stuff but that "cleaning rubber thingy" do you rubb it over the sandpaper while it is ON or OFF? Cause its meant to be used when the Machine is running (be careful)
    Just open the Cover and press it against it. Voila. Clean (if you do it often you save a ton of Sandpaper)
