Remember that all movement is built on the smallest blocks. A strict pull-up should be achieved before moving on to the kipping variety and you should be solid on the "c kip" before you move on the the butterfly. Butterfly kipping pull ups are tremendous for improving times in exercise competitions. Don't be that person who loses because you can't cycle. Learn these progressions now.

In your opinion should someone learn a kipping or butterfly pull up first?
We'd suggest you develop a strong strict pull-up, then kipping, then butterfly. That progression favors least to most strenuous on the shoulder, and most to least transfer to other movements.
