The Dark Cloud Compendium this is amazing! I loved Dark Cloud 1 and 2 but never got a chance to finish them. I’ve been debating breaking out the PS2 and playing them again but fear that I won’t get that into it because it’s been a long time and games have changed so much since then. I had no idea that Level 5 was still around until today. I saw Ni No Kuni and thought it looked familiar and very interesting, come to find out Level 5 made that as well! I wish Level 5 would do a rehash or new Dark Cloud! It was truly a great game with elements unseen until they made them!
@@ChickadeeChow I'm glad you enjoyed the video my friend! It's crazy how well those games have aged overtime, the Georama Mechnaic is just as solid as it was 20 years ago! If your still into dungeon crawlers then you should definitely go for it, classics only get better with age 🌟 It's crazy how well Level 5 has been doing, they definitely prospered over the years to become one of the biggest studios in Japan, they have offices in Canada and San Francisco now too as well a own a bunch of smaller game and animation studios! A new Dark Cloud or remaster would be phenomenal since the mechanics are still fresh but unfortunately it's a shared property so both Sony and Level 5 must come to an agreement, I think that's what's holding it back. At the same time Nino Kuni 2 has the Georama system so it's cool to see them still iterate on their trademark gameplay system and the two Dark Cloud games have been re-released digitally on PS4 and are upscaled to 4K which looks gorgeous! It's crazy how fast these 20 years have went haha, feel free to check out the rest of the channel for more content on Dark Cloud's development!

@@DarkCloudCompendium Yeah they are. I have an extra copy of the DC2 Demo if you need it for your collection. If Sony and Level 5 don't get together on a DC3 it's going to be a missed opportunity on their part with the PS5 just around the corner. If yes, then if so then what differences did u find (like was there some regional exclusive beta/lost/cut/unused stuff that wasnt in other regions ect. If yes is it worth making a video on or essentially would u mind telling me what they were. If u jave checked but there was no regional exclusives rhen ok If no would u ever think about it. (If any of that was hard to read id be happy to rephrase.)
That's an excellent question Liam one that we definitely considered when looking at the Beta and cut contents of dark cloud ☁️ We went through both the Japanese and European variance in addition the English version of Dark Cloud when looking at the Japanese version the main exclusive cut content piece that we found was actually the removed lizard from the fire dungeon the lizard enemy he wasn't available in the other versions of the game instead being replaced by opar perhaps opar and that lizard monster are both related as both the reptiles but Opar doesn't exist in the Japanese version and the lizard version doesn't exist in the European and American versions other than that the differences are fairly minimal the main difference though is that the Japanese dates has a different build version has a different build date than the American one We also looked at the demo versions both the Japanese demo and the American demo so far what we notice is that the Japanese demo has the earliest build dates of any version of dark cloud available but other than that no differences aside from cut content and Beta material🌟
@@DarkCloudCompendium hi there. It's liam crutch here. I just wandered when does the dark cloud demo disc made. I assume sometime between the "beta" and the final release
Hey there, there are two demos the American demo and the JP demo: The American Demo is the same build date as the NTCS build The JP demo predates the final JP release's build date by a few months meaning that the JP Demo version of DC is the earliest build date version we have. From looking at both the JP demo and Jp Final we couldn't find any new beta files in the demo version that were not already discovered in the vanilla JP release! Hope this answers it :) @@Darkcloudbeta7_yt
Hey hey Weathers, I hope all is well! The online features would have allowed you to share your village online as well as play in another friends world; all with real players which was groundbreaking for the time especially on console. The Dreamcast did online prior but this would have been the first major PlayStation online game, Twisted Metal Black later took that honor! DC's online was scrapped fairly early in development as the title went thru many different dev changes as deadlines were tight, playable Seda was also cut (I have a 10 minute long video on this whole topic and how we recovered him) PS2 broadband titles did not come out until after DC was released. I hope you enjoyed the video my friend and stay safe :)
I'm doing my best to find a way to get the files back online so others can access them! I'll definitely let you know when I do, hopefully within the week 😃

Thanks for linking the extraction tools. I couldn't wait to try them after reading the article on TCRF. But what do you do with the files after they are extracted to get, for example, the character portraits? I managed to get a few neat images by cutting the files with a hex editor, but i'm sure that's not the right way to do it, as the images are sometimes scrambled. Any ideas?
Hey Michael, it's good to hear from you again I hope all is well! ✌🌟 From what I understand the images come out scrambled but you can use a tool called EZSwizzle to unscramble them! I really wish I could help you more but i'm actually really bad at this sort of stuff! 😔 If I had the technical knowhow I would have picked these games clean by now haha 😂 Maybe someone on the Dark Cloud Reddit can help? 🤔 I'm going to be making a video which runs through the new Debug Disc that we just recently found sometime in the new year! Happy Holidays my friend! 😀
@@DarkCloudCompendium The discovery of the debug executable really came out of blue. Who would have thought that a random demo disc, that didn't even feature Dark Cloud, would contain something like this. What an exciting time for Dark Cloud. Looking forward to enjoying your content in 2020.
@@michaelmoore3787 Right! This debug disc came out of no where but it's not the first debug mode we found! Previously 2017 when I was playing Dark Cloud on PCSX2 I found that there was text referencing debug rooms when I asked Punk, who is an expert at PS2 code, to look at the data he discovered several codes such as a complete debug menu, dungeon debug mode, free camera, the ability to hack jumping back in (minus the animation) and access to a free camera! This allowed us to get a better understanding of Dark Cloud's development! Flash forward to a couple days ago the amazing Punk7890 found a fully debug enabled executable of Dark Cloud on a demo disc called Jampack Winter 2002 under a dummy file. When I contacted him he was kind enough to share an ISO of the disc with me and allowed me to share it with others! What's nice is that this new disc has features that are missing from the retail debug menu! The disc boots to a debug menu contains free cameras and more! Dark Cloud's producer Kentaro Motomura noted in 2000 that this online mode was scrapped due to time restrictions by Sony
@@TrayGChevorletCorvette The amount of demands and pressure Sony put on Level 5 was crazy especially when you take into account that they were a new studio at the time. I'd love to DC 3 for PS5, Rogue Galaxy initially started development as Dark Cloud 3 before Level 5 changed their mind 6 months into the project's history, a lot of the concepts from that Dark Cloud 3 pitch such as story and characters were carried over into Rogue Galaxy

@@DarkCloudCompendium Some day they should do a remaster of DC 1& 2 that includes all of the scrapped content. That would bring back the fanbase and pave the way for Sony to green light Dark Cloud 3.
If your still into dungeon crawlers then you should definitely go for it, classics only get better with age 🌟
It's crazy how well Level 5 has been doing, they definitely prospered over the years to become one of the biggest studios in Japan, they have offices in Canada and San Francisco now too as well a own a bunch of smaller game and animation studios!

That's so cool, I have the Japanese Taikenban demos of Dark Cloud 1 and Dark Dark Chronicle but ony Chronicles' is sealed! Those demo discs are getting harder to find!
@@DarkCloudCompendium Yeah they are. I have an extra copy of the DC2 Demo if you need it for your collection. If Sony and Level 5 don't get together on a DC3 it's going to be a missed opportunity on their part with the PS5 just around the corner. Especially since everyone is currently having a blast with world building in the new Animal Crossing game on Switch. It would bring more gamers over to PlayStation who have an interest in those game mechanics but are also looking for the Dark Cloud game features that would never exist in an Animal Crossing game.
@@thedemonnoof4383 That's a really kind offer but I'll have to decline because our mail services aren't running any more I totally agree 101% if you go back to the Level 5 interviews I did with our sources that worked on Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 it's crazy, they look back on the game as sort of a missed opportunity because it really could have been the Minecraft of that era had Sony not told them to reduce emphasis on the Georama system. They would knock it out of the park for sure if they did one today!

There's evidence to suggest that 'Rogue Galaxy' was actually 'Dark Cloud 3' in the beta stages.
Hey there SgCy, you are most definitely correct! There was an early Dark Cloud 3 concept piece that was placed in a Dark Chronicle Japanese artbook that corroborates this as this concept art features Rogue Galaxy's town Zerard in the background!

Around 3:52 that beta georama being found ont he disc has got me thinking. Have u and the others liek wise of words (words of wind? I apologies to all if i butchered his name) and dayuppy scoured regional discs.
What i mean is have u checked the game files on the jp version and also usa and pal???
If yes, then if so then what differences did u find (like was there some regional exclusive beta/lost/cut/unused stuff that wasnt in other regions ect. If yes is it worth making a video on or essentially would u mind telling me what they were. If u jave checked but there was no regional exclusives rhen ok
If no would u ever think about it.
(If any of that was hard to read id be happy to rephrase.)
That's an excellent question Liam one that we definitely considered when looking at the Beta and cut contents of dark cloud ☁️
We went through both the Japanese and European variance in addition the English version of Dark Cloud when looking at the Japanese version the main exclusive cut content piece that we found was actually the removed lizard from the fire dungeon the lizard enemy he wasn't available in the other versions of the game instead being replaced by opar perhaps opar and that lizard monster are both related as both the reptiles but Opar doesn't exist in the Japanese version and the lizard version doesn't exist in the European and American versions other than that the differences are fairly minimal the main difference though is that the Japanese dates has a different build version has a different build date than the American one
We also looked at the demo versions both the Japanese demo and the American demo so far what we notice is that the Japanese demo has the earliest build dates of any version of dark cloud available but other than that no differences aside from cut content and Beta material🌟
@@DarkCloudCompendium hi there. It's liam crutch here. I just wandered when does the dark cloud demo disc made. I assume sometime between the "beta" and the final release
?
Hey there, there are two demos the American demo and the JP demo:
The American Demo is the same build date as the NTCS build
The JP demo predates the final JP release's build date by a few months meaning that the JP Demo version of DC is the earliest build date version we have.
From looking at both the JP demo and Jp Final we couldn't find any new beta files in the demo version that were not already discovered in the vanilla JP release!
Hope this answers it :) @@Darkcloudbeta7_yt

There were talks about Dark Cloud being having an online gaming feature? Gotta wonder how that would have worked, especially given the times.
The tools are no longer available. Can you reupload?

Thanks for linking the extraction tools. I couldn't wait to try them after reading the article on TCRF. But what do you do with the files after they are extracted to get, for example, the character portraits? I managed to get a few neat images by cutting the files with a hex editor, but i'm sure that's not the right way to do it, as the images are sometimes scrambled. Any ideas?
Hey Michael, it's good to hear from you again I hope all is well! ✌🌟
From what I understand the images come out scrambled but you can use a tool called EZSwizzle to unscramble them!
