That's a good point. For instance, there has been a big resurgance in Kingdom Hearts over the last few years, so who knows? Maybe a DC revival is not completely out of the question 🤞 In terms of features, I'd like a more balanced, modern combat system (maybe skill tree based?) and a return to more of the georama style of Dark Cloud. I always felt the points system in DC2 was more restrictive than anything; there was really only enough flexibility to make the things necessary to complete each town. Kind of made customisation difficult in my eyes. What would you like to see?

I'm really really excited for that 8K texture pack, honestly it along with Dark Cloud Enhanced are the reasons why I'm holding off on doing a Let's Play for the Compendium, why not do one when that texture pack is out with DC Enhanced's new features! 👀🌟 SomeWhen is a title that I can't wait to check out, 16 bit Georama is something I never knew we needed but it looks so good!

1:35 What I would want in a Dark Cloud game? Continuation of epic music More options for Georama, instead of restricting us like they did in DC2, it should be more like DC1 where once we get the bonus items from the citizens, we can then arrange however we want. DC2's focus on 2 characters compared to the 6 in DC1 is much more manageable and can allow them to make a better story. I've noticed DC is good at making stories about Loss to Hope situations. Upgrading was pretty good in DC2, so follow that path. There's not much that I can think of that DC official needs, though smooth framerate and better camera angling would definitely help. It would be sick to see proper remasters of these games though.

I've often pondered what I'd want from a DC sequel or spiritual successor, and I think it comes down to iteration and increased complexity, as well as a strengthened impact of the georama and time travel concepts on the story. Basically, more layers, more georama, more timey wimey. I'd take inspirations from a variety of sources; Spore, Valkyrie Profile, Fire Emblem and more. Spore is far from a perfect game, but I've always liked the layering of customisation, of creatures, clothing, buildings, cities and starships, each added to the previous so you can see how far you've come. A village becomes a city becomes a megacity. I'd play with the time concept a lot more, with 4 eras instead of the 2 in Dark Cloud 2 or the specific point in Seda's history in Dark Cloud 1, a primeval era, a medieval era, a steamunk era and a scifi future era, with a main protagonist from each, but travel is only allowed forward or back by one era, so the characters from the primeval era only have contact with those from the medieval, the medieval has contact with the primeval and steampunk, the steampunk with medieval and futuristic and the futuristic only with the steampunk. The main protagonists from the mediveal and steampunk eras are similar to Max and Monica, each with a ranged and melee weapon, one being sword and sorcery, the other being firearms and tools, whereas the primeval protagonist would have a more fleshed out monster transformation system and the futuristic protagonist would be piloting a mecha, at some point in the story, the steampunk protagonist, through his contact with the future, develops his own, smaller mecha which functions as a ridepod, and the medieval protagonist, through her contact with the primeval era learns not to transform into monsters, but to capture and command them, forming a pokemon-esque system. I like the idea of a big party of weirdos like Dark Cloud 1 though, so as a compromise, I would re-introduce the dungeon system of needing specific character abilities to progress through blocked areas, these secondary characters only have one weapon type, and are not directly controlled, they are more like the party members in a Kingdom Hearts game, and their recruitment would be tied to the story. The Valkyrie Profile and Fire Emblem Genealogy inspirations comes from these side characters; basically these are characters "lost to time", literally the potential children of characters throughout the 4 eras that you play matchmaker with, for example, in the 3rd era, you need a city to have a certain industry, to do this, you go to the 2nd era and pair two characters together, potentially even messing with their pre-existing relationships, in order to maximise their potential, their descendants will be the character you need in the 3rd era who performs some task, founds some company, etc. However, those characters from the 2nd era had other potential futures, other potential children with other characters, and these potential children become "lost to time", allowing you to save and recruit them, though their existence is then tied to yours. The key story beats will be concerned with the feasibility of alternate timelines, the morality of messing with destiny, conflicts between spirituality/magic and technology, tradition vs progress, with a pretty big twist as to the identity and motivations of the antagonists.
Im been dying to play Dark Cloud again and even broke out my PS2. But come to discover that I dont have a copy of dark cloud 1 or 2. So I had to settle for hot shots golf 3 but come to discover that my PS2 controller doesn’t work. So had to hop on eBay and buy a new controller and both Dark cloud games. But now I’m discovering that I need an only RGB TV to be able to play the games in their prime because my HDTV makes everything blurry…that’s a lot of discovering just for nostalgia 😂

I want to see more advanced combat but still have it item based. Like give different weapons their own move sets (or dare I say combos). I don't need a billion weapons, but I feel they should make each weapon they do make unique. Also, make broken dagger glitch an Easter egg intentionally

It's cool you included a Japanese ps2 commercial. Compared to the "radical x-treme" stuff that Western gaming adverts had at the time, this ad seems more introspective. I hate advertisers for the most part as i find the field to be very predatory and manipulative, but this comparison is one aspect I am interested in. It would be neat to learn about the cultural research that went into making what they felt was an ad that would strike a chord with the desired demographic.

I'll never forgive the west for what they did to my precious ICO's north american cover 😠 The American commercials for DC and DC 2 are really standard and nothing special where as the JP commercials are much more emotional, referring back to memories of younger days like you mentioned. I wanted to create a video Unpacking both commercials for the past few years but I never got around to it when other DC Lost Media has to be preserved so I thought I'd slide them in here for now ;)

Nice use of help me carving. Always hard seeing a great IP or musical artist have to "sell their soul to the devil" in order to get picked up. Whenever you hand the rights to a big company, that loss of control can be really devastating in the long run. The best you can do is hope the "owner" company cares so little about it that they won't take action to randomly shut down a fan project they only hate because someone came up with a better idea than they could
It sadly happens time and time again with in the art world and entertainment industry, Sony isn't even doing anything with DC which is all the more heart breaking!

I think dungeons in the past and present would be a great addition to the series, maybe even having time travel in the middle of the dungeon! I think Georama is really what makes Dark Cloud special! I would want them to go all out with the Georama, seeing Level 5 really improve the georama would be amazing as a lot of games focus on creation like Mine craft! It would be cool to for Level 5 to really expand the story and Lore for Dark Cloud as well!

More options for Georama, instead of restricting us like they did in DC2, it should be more like DC1 where once we get the bonus items from the citizens, we can then arrange however we want.
DC2's focus on 2 characters compared to the 6 in DC1 is much more manageable and can allow them to make a better story. I've noticed DC is good at making stories about Loss to Hope situations.
Upgrading was pretty good in DC2, so follow that path.
There's not much that I can think of that DC official needs, though smooth framerate and better camera angling would definitely help.
It would be sick to see proper remasters of these games though.

I've often pondered what I'd want from a DC sequel or spiritual successor, and I think it comes down to iteration and increased complexity, as well as a strengthened impact of the georama and time travel concepts on the story.
Basically, more layers, more georama, more timey wimey.
I'd take inspirations from a variety of sources; Spore, Valkyrie Profile, Fire Emblem and more.
Spore is far from a perfect game, but I've always liked the layering of customisation, of creatures, clothing, buildings, cities and starships, each added to the previous so you can see how far you've come. A village becomes a city becomes a megacity.
I'd play with the time concept a lot more, with 4 eras instead of the 2 in Dark Cloud 2 or the specific point in Seda's history in Dark Cloud 1, a primeval era, a medieval era, a steamunk era and a scifi future era, with a main protagonist from each, but travel is only allowed forward or back by one era, so the characters from the primeval era only have contact with those from the medieval, the medieval has contact with the primeval and steampunk, the steampunk with medieval and futuristic and the futuristic only with the steampunk.
The main protagonists from the mediveal and steampunk eras are similar to Max and Monica, each with a ranged and melee weapon, one being sword and sorcery, the other being firearms and tools, whereas the primeval protagonist would have a more fleshed out monster transformation system and the futuristic protagonist would be piloting a mecha, at some point in the story, the steampunk protagonist, through his contact with the future, develops his own, smaller mecha which functions as a ridepod, and the medieval protagonist, through her contact with the primeval era learns not to transform into monsters, but to capture and command them, forming a pokemon-esque system.
I like the idea of a big party of weirdos like Dark Cloud 1 though, so as a compromise, I would re-introduce the dungeon system of needing specific character abilities to progress through blocked areas, these secondary characters only have one weapon type, and are not directly controlled, they are more like the party members in a Kingdom Hearts game, and their recruitment would be tied to the story.
The Valkyrie Profile and Fire Emblem Genealogy inspirations comes from these side characters; basically these are characters "lost to time", literally the potential children of characters throughout the 4 eras that you play matchmaker with, for example, in the 3rd era, you need a city to have a certain industry, to do this, you go to the 2nd era and pair two characters together, potentially even messing with their pre-existing relationships, in order to maximise their potential, their descendants will be the character you need in the 3rd era who performs some task, founds some company, etc. However, those characters from the 2nd era had other potential futures, other potential children with other characters, and these potential children become "lost to time", allowing you to save and recruit them, though their existence is then tied to yours.
The key story beats will be concerned with the feasibility of alternate timelines, the morality of messing with destiny, conflicts between spirituality/magic and technology, tradition vs progress, with a pretty big twist as to the identity and motivations of the antagonists.
I am definitely playing this game again after textures have been upscaled!

Im been dying to play Dark Cloud again and even broke out my PS2. But come to discover that I dont have a copy of dark cloud 1 or 2. So I had to settle for hot shots golf 3 but come to discover that my PS2 controller doesn’t work. So had to hop on eBay and buy a new controller and both Dark cloud games. But now I’m discovering that I need an only RGB TV to be able to play the games in their prime because my HDTV makes everything blurry…that’s a lot of discovering just for nostalgia 😂

I fell down that same rabbit hole back in 2015, the best option for me was playing on PS2 with Ypbpr cables which can be found for very cheap with a CRT TV; it creates a really nice image!

I want to see more advanced combat but still have it item based. Like give different weapons their own move sets (or dare I say combos). I don't need a billion weapons, but I feel they should make each weapon they do make unique.

It's really good, the story soundtrack and characters give a major DC1 vibe :)

It's cool you included a Japanese ps2 commercial. Compared to the "radical x-treme" stuff that Western gaming adverts had at the time, this ad seems more introspective. I hate advertisers for the most part as i find the field to be very predatory and manipulative, but this comparison is one aspect I am interested in. It would be neat to learn about the cultural research that went into making what they felt was an ad that would strike a chord with the desired demographic.

The American commercials for DC and DC 2 are really standard and nothing special where as the JP commercials are much more emotional, referring back to memories of younger days like you mentioned.

Always hard seeing a great IP or musical artist have to "sell their soul to the devil" in order to get picked up. Whenever you hand the rights to a big company, that loss of control can be really devastating in the long run. The best you can do is hope the "owner" company cares so little about it that they won't take action to randomly shut down a fan project they only hate because someone came up with a better idea than they could
It sadly happens time and time again with in the art world and entertainment industry, Sony isn't even doing anything with DC which is all the more heart breaking!

You know what it's funny you mention that with Level 5's initial work on Dark Cloud 3 back in 2003 they wanted to age the series along with the audience and create a Dark fairy tale, this can be seen in late in the Iceberg where we showed off their more Dark and gritty weapons 👀🌟
