The trouble with your system is if the barrel on top becomes contaminated with something, ALL your water will be contaminated. It would be better if you filled/drained each barrel independantly through a manifold (all barrels discharge individually through their own valve into one pipe/spout). This way you will know when to refill and treat each barrel as they empty ensuring a fresh water supply. Don't forget to put a "refilled" date to ensure rotation. Cheers.

I like the idea of staking system vertical , but I don`t like the idea of drilling the drums just to install tiny hoses to air vent, now each barrels would have a unnecessary permanent hole on top of now having to wash shavings from inside from the drilling
,when you can fill up the tanks from the bottom and just loosen the top cap anyways, just get a hose adapter to the bottom valve and fill from there.... no drilling holes on barrels are necessary if filled from bottom side!... each barrel weights 440lbs. full.

Curious about the return air pipe. How does that work in terms of water, wouldn't the water pressure push the grommet and the airline out once the drum is full of water and there is no longer any air inside?

They really should put the new link to the new company in the description or first on the comments. I just went to the site. A 3 barrel kit is $80 if you don’t need the barrels. We bought 3 55 gallon food grade barrels used for $25 each. These are way too expensive new. It’s a ripoff unless you have money to blow. We will be ordering the kit.

I agree all you need is to vent the top cap

do you have a parts list, especially where to buy the shelving. I believe water weighs 8 lb per gallon, so those 3 barrels at 50 gallons each is 150 gallons, at 8 lb each means that shelf has to support around 1200 lbs. Also the fixtures you're using. I'm off grid also and have to haul water, so this would certainly help.

I like the idea of vertical stacking. One minor flaw is that if anything leaks below the top barrel, then that water is going to be lost, possibly causing damage to contents nearby. Wouldn't it be safe to place a 1/4 turn ball valve on the tubing from the two upper barrels also so that they can be shut off , and in case of maintenance ? JK.

confused with the air line system.i think all you need is to vent the top cap

You're totally right. And the frame itself is just a cheap shelving system from a home improvement center.

somewhat true. Venting just the top would work, but as the water moves through the pipes from barrel to barrel you would get the soda bottle thing happening where the water is trying to go one direction (down) and the air its displacing the opposite direction (up and out). So it would work, but venting as they showed would make filling the barrels a little smoother.

@@Lengsel7 which I would never use. I built my own 4-barrel system with 2x4s and there's no way it will tip over or collapse. This thing, not so much.

When you drill the holes do you wash the plastic shaving out of the drum before filling it with clean water?

Does both caps in the drums have the same threads or are they different? The one I have is different and did you drill out the holes in the caps? Thanks

  • @MrErrrrc

Would a larger diameter vent line mean better water pressure? I kind of half asses my 3 barrel system without a vent and have terrible water pressure. I'm going to drill some vents in tomorrow and see if that helps.

What about side support? I hear they bow out and blow up after awhile without middle support.
    Also the website doesn't work!

Clean water does not need to be rotated. It stores forever.

there is air in the barrels because you cannot fill them all the way rotate every 6 months to be safe

Water that is in plastic water barrels horizontally or vertically need to be treated with bleach, water treatment tabs or calcium hypochlorite. No need to turn water barrels or refill barrels with fresh water if treated with calcium hypochlorite or water treatment tabs or liquid. They stay good for up to 10 to 12 years before having to refill them

Before you are all ready to go - don.t you think you should clean out the barrels - who wants to drink plastic for him drilling - also the cap was picked up from a dirty floor

Its not a ton (2000lbs.) of water its only 1376lbs. if you had a rack that held 240 Gal you would indeed have a ton of water :-)
