Alexander Michael Where did you get that information? I’m not trying to sound rude but if that were true, pumping water from the ground would be just as bad. But that’s not the case. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acid. Calcium carbonate doesn’t come out of a scientist lab, it comes from natural sediments found in stone, fossils, limestone etc. this type of system works perfect for balancing the ph levels of the water. We have been using a two large concrete cistern system with essentially the same materials since 1993. Our public health inspector claims our water is cleaner than city water

@@timisaac8121 we did get it working but are doing some upgrades including putting coiled copper wire and looking to put a uv light in the top of the last tank. We will post up any additional learnings. Pea gravel is pea sized stones. We also removed the mesh from the top of the third tank as there was an accumulation of algae there. Probably caused by some organic matter (grass) in the charcoal. We scooped out any charcoal that floated

I had a aquaculture business in Florida growing salt water LiveRock. Corals,pink coralline algae etc... each rock had over 500 species of life on it. We built reefs out of a100% calcium carbonate rock in the Atlantic Ocean & the Gulf of Mexico. We used a lot of charcoal in our filtration system of about 3,000 gallons. We use to recycle the charcoal by cooking it on cookie sheets in the oven at a preset heat and time. It was then sterile again for reuse. We hardly ever added new charcoal except over time from what spilled or turned to dust. We did this at least a dozen times and never replaced it with new. We kept extra charcoal only to replace very small amount lost charcoal from handling. It never went bad. Don’t remember the temperature or time length of heated oven. But I’m sure you can google it. this is great little over engineered from others i have seen on youtube . but thats awesome cause it cleans the water better . and i agree with you brad but what i would really like to see is this kind of thinking along the river ways that are already dammed up . sure it would cost a little bit and there would be three or four levels of dam walls but the out come would be cleaner water at a very great level . cleaner streams and water ways . humans destroyed our water ways with sewage and toxic waste its up to us to clean up our mess . the only way that will happen is stricter laws against water waste and mass water filtration plants . it would be alot easier then trying to send people to mars for god sake .
To make your charcoal change easier, you could use the screen netting to make bags to hold the charcoal. When it comes time to change the charcoal, just take the bags out, empty them and refill with fresh char, and put them back in tank 3.

This kind of filter is very similar to the kinds of filters used for aquariums. The basic principles are the same, it's only the materials that vary slightly. For anyone trying to replicate this, I recommend looking into what's being done in the aquarium hobby to get some inspiration

Frank Smith if you watched the video properly, Professor John Kern developed this “primitive” system for his graduate thesis. He spent years testing it in various labs including Bangkok and Colorado. He essentially developed and improved this system in university. He needed post “college” education to do this properly and efficiently. Hi in Westren Europe most people take clean drinking water for granted. Many years ago they asked an old woman on tv what was the thing she would choose if she just could keep one modernity's that had come into common peoples household lives during her lifetime; she answered ''running water'.
What an amazingly simple setup I live off grid so would have to modify it to gravity feed or install 12V pump.Again great upload I see a few comments below picking the idea to pieces I wonder if they have ever built anything so useful and simple that could provide clear water to a village of people that need it.
This is really great! Love the idea of proper natural water filtration. Moving away from buying plastic bottled waters and I feel MUCH better then tap water.. I don’t believe we are meant to be drinking unnatural tap water with chemicals like Chlorine and fluoride and any other unknown chemicals the government puts in tap water. But one thing I really don’t like… (but toldally understand why it’s used and how difficult it would be with out it) is… PLASTIC… I hate the use of so much plastic.. Plastic barrels, pipe fittings, gaskets etc. I am trying to move away completely from using plastics to drinking water. As of right now I am Bottling my own drinking water from a local spring I know here in Northern California In only glass bottles and jugs no plastics. my personal favorite of use is vintage freshly Cleaned glass jugs and bottles that I ether found out on my adventures or was given. I use corks aswell no plastic tops or anything.
Of all plastics High density poly ethylene is quite stable and that's what drums and water tanks are often made of. It is heating plastics that releases toxicities. Your concern of exposure to HDPE plastics I feel is unwarranted but each to there own.
@@hopefilledsinner3911 Polypropylene is also very safe. PVC, on the other hand, is one of the most dangerous plastics to use with anything you eat or drink, due to its vinyl chlorides that make up the plastic -- terribly ironic that it's so common in moving around water.
We are surrounded by so many unhealthy diets and food that "chlorine "is a drop in the ocean. In Cyprus the water from dams after is cleaned and chlorinated ,is driven to houses. This is what I drink.
I was searching for idea to reuse my house wasted water and I found my solution into thia video, definitely i will work on this system and will feed back to you... Thx for idea and easy setup. Most of people should reuse there house waste water instead of running waste water to sewage... I want to spread this easy setup to our society.... In India this will really help. @@atharkhan8190 I have seen systems similar to this in 1 barrel, and in 3, stacked 5-gallon buckets. Also many other variations. This 4 barrel system is more thorough in cleaning the water.

Faruk, what is wrong with providing a service or product people want, like bottled drinking water? If they don't want to buy it they can make it themselves. Nobody forces anybody to buy bottled water. But many, many people are too lazy to learn a method like this and construct a water purification system on their own. So they prefer to buy bottled water. Does that make the companies providing the bottled water evil?
@@digitalian99 Dig down 13 ft or until you hit water. That is how we do it in the USA. We dig wells too. A deep well doesn't need to be filtered. All the ground it goes under filters it. Clean of chemicals too.

Just imagine people were actually paying for tap water that was being bottled and resold, lol.

I think it would be more effective with the charcoal at the end. The charcoal is primarily for removing chemical and metal contaminants, while the gravel and sand trap particulate and organic matter. You want the sand to do its job before the charcoal. Diatomaceous earth would be even better than sand. It's has microscopic structures that can trap micron size particles. Sand is just sand. Not necessarily guaranteed to trap micron size particles. Also in terms of safety, there's nothing about this filter that would actually stop microbes, bacteria, or cellular parasites like amoeba. You probably still want to treat your water with some chlorine or iodine, just to be sure it's safe. Running your water over some sand and charcoal won't stop a cholera outbreak, but a bit of chlorine will.
The original filtration in my house had a small metering device connected to two 5 gallon buckets, one with diluted chlorine and the other with diatomaceous earth. Water flowed through the metering system into three 20 gal galvanized tanks of charcoal, course sand, fine sand and then stored in a final 240 gal galvanized storage TANK. County would come around annually and petri dish our water, send a letter with results and any adjustment needed. BEST TASTING WATER EVER! Then the county informed us we needed to meet government standards and upgraded the rural area... They mandated we scrap our home system because they wouldn't be collecting samples... Our water tastes nasty and stinks of chemicals... We waited 3 months before we reinstalled our home filtration system. It's pretty cheap to send a annual water sample to an independent lab, once again BEST TASTING WATER EVER.
I've Seen dozens and dozens of diy water filter videos over the years. And this is probably the first one I've seen that recommended washing and cleaning the sand/gravel before placing in the filter. (Though, admittedly, many will just put the materials in a container of their choice and flush water through until it's clear anyways). I prefer this hands on assurance. Great vid!
We used to practice this Rocks, Gravel, Sand and Charcoal technique in NE India, it works quite well. The Way he build his Filter is so professional and I bet you can use it for ages without any major problem. Good job👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I remember back in 1993 when on duty in Cambodia we had a system like this built for a local that was working with us. Works slick. Used huge clay pots instead of plastic drums.
@Sheep dog .. You said exactly what I was thinking... Clay-->good. Plastic-->problem. Such big containers could be difficult in clay. Maybe stainless steel would be better. I attended a talk years ago with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She mentioned that (at that time) there were ca. 80,000 kinds of patented material coming from petroleum. 4,000 of them had been tested and found to produce carcinogenic substances. I do not trust plastic water containers at all.
@@Suthrngal We used clay pots because they were abundant and easy to manufacture in Cambodia in 1993. The pots also held quite a bit more water than these plastic drums. They were huge. Back then there was no push for the reduction in petroleum-based products like there s today. That in itself makes them superior would you not agree.

There is a HUGE difference between filtered water and purified water. I harvest rain water in Puerto Rico. It goes through a filtration system before I distilled it. Then I use UV WATER STERILIZERS for my water storage tanks. Been doing this for several years now. My reason for this is due to my health issues with my kidneys and the Municipal Water Supply which has caused significant damage to my kidney.
This is what I followed. My water source had too much dissolved materials which when came in contact with air after 1st tank became brown. It settled as a layer over sand filter tank clogging it quickly. I improvised the original design by introducing airator to the pumpset output (input to tank with float valve is airated) and adding a second tank between the tank with float valve and sand filter tank. This new tank has a bottom water intake and top outlet. New tank should have a valve for drainage at the bottom like that of the tank with float valve. It contains bottom layer of pebbles to a level that covers the inlet and drain, next metal chips almost 1' to 1.5', followed by sand. Each layer separated by green net. I now just have to open the drainage valves of the first two tanks at regular intervals to avoid clogging.

I'm thinking about making the same thing for my home cause Iron remove plant is so costly in my country. And my tank is 1000 litres which get full by 30 minutes { and i need 4 tank each day} so would this types of container can bear the water speed, like won't spill out!

your way is the same as my parents' era. we used charcoal, sand, palm fiber, gravel or pumice stone. this method is used from generation to generation in Indonesia in areas with poor water quality. now rarely use it. water availability is better than before.

The city of Venice used a similar system to filter the rain water to feed the city wells during the middle ages, since there was no fresh water spring in the area.
Love the design, and the step by step assembly of the system. My only reservation for this setup was the centre tube for free movement of the set floated valve. It felt like an unintended bypass for the water which could reduce the filters effectiveness (Though I guess the reduced effectiveness would be minimal). I saw your concrete design which did address this issue with a separate float area from the filter. Maybe a larger diameter pipe for the float to sit inside and the top of the pipe could reach above the water line to simulate it's concrete counterparts method. Other than that I want to make one. Can just see my wife rolling her eye's at me.
Simple and clean approach and a precise to the point video. Superb! This should become common practise, people use RO water without realising its actually harmful, it brings down TDS to extremely low level and is slightly acidic, both not a good thing, use rain water with these kinds of filters or just use build rainwater after collecting it in an underground tank (u can use a similar filter system like in the video) and boil and drink it, voila!!

I came across this video by chance while shopping for a water filtration system as an end-user. Although it is not my domain, I couldn't but be touched by how simple techniques (vs. advanced technologies) can be put for the service of humanity - here in rural/remote areas. It is a beautiful example of how humans can help add real value to own and each other's lives, in simple ways and without complicating an already complex existence.
You should manufacture pre-prepares tanks to sell. Just bags (layers) within each to open and lay and assemble pre supplied pipes etc. Would make a fortune and help us all.
I think you missed his point. The reason he shared this video is to help people to get their freedom from water suppliers. I think he would be contradictory to title the video like like he did, and manufacture his technology for money purposes. In term of strategy, that would have make no sense.🤔🤔😀

Frank Smith if you watched the video properly, Professor John Kern developed this “primitive” system for his graduate thesis. He spent years testing it in various labs including Bangkok and Colorado. He essentially developed and improved this system in university. He needed post “college” education to do this properly and efficiently. This is really great! Love the idea of proper natural water filtration. Moving away from buying plastic bottled waters and I feel MUCH better then tap water.. I don’t believe we are meant to be drinking unnatural tap water with chemicals like Chlorine and fluoride and any other unknown chemicals the government puts in tap water. But one thing I really don’t like… (but toldally understand why it’s used and how difficult it would be with out it) is… PLASTIC… I hate the use of so much plastic.. Plastic barrels, pipe fittings, gaskets etc. I am trying to move away completely from using plastics to drinking water. As of right now I am Bottling my own drinking water from a local spring I know here in Northern California In only glass bottles and jugs no plastics. my personal favorite of use is vintage freshly Cleaned glass jugs and bottles that I ether found out on my adventures or was given. I use corks aswell no plastic tops or anything.
Of all plastics High density poly ethylene is quite stable and that's what drums and water tanks are often made of. It is heating plastics that releases toxicities. Your concern of exposure to HDPE plastics I feel is unwarranted but each to there own.
It would help if you had a clue of what you are talking about. Flouride is NOT used for water purification.
Or you happen to live in a country that doesn't use chlorine for cleaning.
@@hopefilledsinner3911 Polypropylene is also very safe. PVC, on the other hand, is one of the most dangerous plastics to use with anything you eat or drink, due to its vinyl chlorides that make up the plastic -- terribly ironic that it's so common in moving around water.
We are surrounded by so many unhealthy diets and food that "chlorine "is a drop in the ocean. In Cyprus the water from dams after is cleaned and chlorinated ,is driven to houses. This is what I drink.
I was searching for idea to reuse my house wasted water and I found my solution into thia video, definitely i will work on this system and will feed back to you... Thx for idea and easy setup. Most of people should reuse there house waste water instead of running waste water to sewage... I want to spread this easy setup to our society.... In India this will really help. If someone not want to drink this water at least they can use for bathroom floor cleaning plants etc

Very possible even with a water bottle. All you need do is scale down on all the materials used. Best wishes.
@@atharkhan8190 I have seen systems similar to this in 1 barrel, and in 3, stacked 5-gallon buckets. Also many other variations. This 4 barrel system is more thorough in cleaning the water.

honestly after viewing it, i am now installing my own water filtration system using this simple technology. im almost 70% complete ready. structure is being built and materials have been procured.. will post soon after i have installed it.

Faruk, what is wrong with providing a service or product people want, like bottled drinking water? If they don't want to buy it they can make it themselves. Nobody forces anybody to buy bottled water. But many, many people are too lazy to learn a method like this and construct a water purification system on their own. So they prefer to buy bottled water. Does that make the companies providing the bottled water evil?

@@digitalian99 Dig down 13 ft or until you hit water. That is how we do it in the USA. We dig wells too. A deep well doesn't need to be filtered. All the ground it goes under filters it. Clean of chemicals too.
Farzuk Rahmad I saw a documentary once with Penn & Teller the comedians/magicians and the topic was drinking water, they showed how some companies were literally filling the bottled water they were selling from a tap. Just imagine people were actually paying for tap water that was being bottled and resold, lol.

I think it would be more effective with the charcoal at the end. The charcoal is primarily for removing chemical and metal contaminants, while the gravel and sand trap particulate and organic matter. You want the sand to do its job before the charcoal.
Diatomaceous earth would be even better than sand. It's has microscopic structures that can trap micron size particles. Sand is just sand. Not necessarily guaranteed to trap micron size particles.
Also in terms of safety, there's nothing about this filter that would actually stop microbes, bacteria, or cellular parasites like amoeba. You probably still want to treat your water with some chlorine or iodine, just to be sure it's safe. Running your water over some sand and charcoal won't stop a cholera outbreak, but a bit of chlorine will.
Im thinking of puting a bore well on a property and the water has iron and other minerals in it... would a filter like this help?
The original filtration in my house had a small metering device connected to two 5 gallon buckets, one with diluted chlorine and the other with diatomaceous earth. Water flowed through the metering system into three 20 gal galvanized tanks of charcoal, course sand, fine sand and then stored in a final 240 gal galvanized storage TANK. County would come around annually and petri dish our water, send a letter with results and any adjustment needed. BEST TASTING WATER EVER!
Then the county informed us we needed to meet government standards and upgraded the rural area... They mandated we scrap our home system because they wouldn't be collecting samples... Our water tastes nasty and stinks of chemicals... We waited 3 months before we reinstalled our home filtration system. It's pretty cheap to send a annual water sample to an independent lab, once again BEST TASTING WATER EVER.

I've Seen dozens and dozens of diy water filter videos over the years. And this is probably the first one I've seen that recommended washing and cleaning the sand/gravel before placing in the filter. (Though, admittedly, many will just put the materials in a container of their choice and flush water through until it's clear anyways). I prefer this hands on assurance. Great vid!

We used to practice this Rocks, Gravel, Sand and Charcoal technique in NE India, it works quite well. The Way he build his Filter is so professional and I bet you can use it for ages without any major problem. Good job👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Such big containers could be difficult in clay. Maybe stainless steel would be better.
I attended a talk years ago with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She mentioned that (at that time) there were ca. 80,000 kinds of patented material coming from petroleum. 4,000 of them had been tested and found to produce carcinogenic substances.

@@Suthrngal We used clay pots because they were abundant and easy to manufacture in Cambodia in 1993. The pots also held quite a bit more water than these plastic drums. They were huge. Back then there was no push for the reduction in petroleum-based products like there s today. That in itself makes them superior would you not agree.

A simple, effective and cheap way to treat water. I live in Spain away from mains water supply, so a solution like this will be essential in our summer months as we filter water from a borehole with high sulphur content. Thanks for the video and greetings from Aragon, Spain!

There is a HUGE difference between filtered water and purified water.
I harvest rain water in Puerto Rico. It goes through a filtration system before I distilled it. Then I use UV WATER STERILIZERS for my water storage tanks. Been doing this for several years now.
My reason for this is due to my health issues with my kidneys and the Municipal Water Supply which has caused significant damage to my kidney.

Im running out of easy and quick ideas, so I think im gonna have someone do this filter system for me! ❤️ his voice also is very calming.
This is what I followed. My water source had too much dissolved materials which when came in contact with air after 1st tank became brown. It settled as a layer over sand filter tank clogging it quickly.
I improvised the original design by introducing airator to the pumpset output (input to tank with float valve is airated) and adding a second tank between the tank with float valve and sand filter tank. This new tank has a bottom water intake and top outlet. New tank should have a valve for drainage at the bottom like that of the tank with float valve. It contains bottom layer of pebbles to a level that covers the inlet and drain, next metal chips almost 1' to 1.5', followed by sand. Each layer separated by green net.
I now just have to open the drainage valves of the first two tanks at regular intervals to avoid clogging.

I'm thinking about making the same thing for my home cause Iron remove plant is so costly in my country. And my tank is 1000 litres which get full by 30 minutes { and i need 4 tank each day} so would this types of container can bear the water speed, like won't spill out!

your way is the same as my parents' era. we used charcoal, sand, palm fiber, gravel or pumice stone. this method is used from generation to generation in Indonesia in areas with poor water quality. now rarely use it. water availability is better than before.

The city of Venice used a similar system to filter the rain water to feed the city wells during the middle ages, since there was no fresh water spring in the area.
Love the design, and the step by step assembly of the system. My only reservation for this setup was the centre tube for free movement of the set floated valve. It felt like an unintended bypass for the water which could reduce the filters effectiveness (Though I guess the reduced effectiveness would be minimal). I saw your concrete design which did address this issue with a separate float area from the filter. Maybe a larger diameter pipe for the float to sit inside and the top of the pipe could reach above the water line to simulate it's concrete counterparts method. Other than that I want to make one. Can just see my wife rolling her eye's at me.

Simple and clean approach and a precise to the point video. Superb! This should become common practise, people use RO water without realising its actually harmful, it brings down TDS to extremely low level and is slightly acidic, both not a good thing, use rain water with these kinds of filters or just use build rainwater after collecting it in an underground tank (u can use a similar filter system like in the video) and boil and drink it, voila!!
I just wanted add some things about charcoal. Charcoal started used 1500 BC and Hindus start purification water with charcoal year 400 BC. Now we can all watch the program. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I came across this video by chance while shopping for a water filtration system as an end-user. Although it is not my domain, I couldn't but be touched by how simple techniques (vs. advanced technologies) can be put for the service of humanity - here in rural/remote areas. It is a beautiful example of how humans can help add real value to own and each other's lives, in simple ways and without complicating an already complex existence.

I think you missed his point. The reason he shared this video is to help people to get their freedom from water suppliers. I think he would be contradictory to title the video like like he did, and manufacture his technology for money purposes. In term of strategy, that would have make no sense.🤔🤔😀
