If you are worried about chemicals leaching into your barrel from the concrete, then you should definitely NOT put the barrel on pressure-treated lumber like in the video. Also, you might want to consider using 4 pieces, not 2 to distribute the weight of a full barrel to prevent denting the bottom As barrel bottoms are designed to sit on a completely flat surface. Don't forget, the folks in areas that have sustained freezing in winter need to drain these barrels or they will split when frozen if they are not able to store them in a heated place. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.
Well... I just used treated wood. I wasn't thinking. Do you think it needs to be changed out?
I want to store it in my closet on carpet.
I wouldn't worry abt seepage. It's overkill.
@FEMA-SpecialAgent6
@jayb.8460 if those leak, you're going to regret doing so.
Great job. Not too long and not too short. Very well explained. Thanks!
Our Augason Farms drum came with a wrench, the water siphon & water treatments. Thanks for the video!
And that plastic wrench is worthless. Mine snapped off trying to open the barrel. I got a metal one and it’s perfect.
Thanks for the info! just bought, and treated two drums with your advice. Thanks again!
This is EXACTLY what I needed!!! Thank you so much!🙋🏻♀️❤️
Just did this according to your video. 👍 thanks for the info!
Great tutorial post,thank you.
Thanks!! Great info. 👍
Thank you for your information. I appreciate your time. Greg Chaney in coastal N.C
Very helpful video.
Thank you
Great information, Thank you.
Awww truly grateful for the video. 👍👍👊🙂
Thank you brother 😊
thank you!
Thankyou ❤️
Good video keep it up
Howdy from East Texas
So many entitled people demanding info lol. Great video.
In my job those pups break easily or have holes in the hoeses I'm a machine operator we pump daily for the cilcon for the materials
I was hoping this video would be about holding the drum 12"off the ground, safely. But this was good!
Find yourself a deadlifted who is ready to retire. As long as you feed him, he should be good to hold that drum for that 5-10yrs 🏋🏻♂️
Like your spokesperson
Store it in the garage unless you jn south Texas and your garage is 120……
I can blast thru (1) gallon of water no problem. Making coffee, boiling water for Oatmeal/eggs/re hydrating back packing meals etc etc. Then we need to wash dishes, decontaminating bathroom equipment or simply washing your face. 2 gallons a day (minimum) is my recommendation.
Yep, this. Especially if you plan on bathing. My wife and I have about 5 gal per person per day. We go through about 2.5 gal a day with food prep and drinking. Only way we know this is because we live in an area that constantly has water shortages and so we've had to live off water storage for weeks at a time. We are currently in a water shortage right now going on 3 days with no water. It has been known to last up to 2 weeks, so water storage for us is a part of every day life.
Don't forget water for all pets/animals. They need clean drinking water also!
which hole do you put the syphon in? And maybe you should add to video to disinfect the syphon too. Thanks, was a big help!
lol You could do that yourself without any video! And, the water as it runs through it, will 'clean" it a bit.
HDPE is non hygroscopic, which means it does not absorb moisture. Blue #2 barrels used for food products can be cleaned to the point that there is no detectable smell or taste of the product stored previously. Black barrels have carbon mixed into the hdpe, and it is susceptible to moisture. Setting the blue barrels on concrete is not a problem.
you maybe be 100% correct on that, but sitting a couple 2x4s underneth it is so easy, i figure why not just do it
👍
@@PilotPatriot Thank you I would do it too. Air circulation. Love it. You were great!
Hey Sir ,
So can I use a black used food grade barrel for storing water ? It had lemon juice in it. I already cleaned them out with pool shock . Thanks in advance !
That would be prefect
Amazon sells a 5 wheel cart for drums with brakes on it.
Link please?
My guy watch the city prep video and went and made his directly after
Great video, NEW SUB.
I have a question. If I wanted to use that 55 plastic drum to take showers using a tankless hot water unit. Is there anything special that I would need to do? Would I need to make sure that the barrel is BPA free?
Thanks
Are you supposed to use bleach to clean it as well?
How many drops of Aquamira Water Treatment should I use for a Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Rigid Water Container?
Id be afraid to buy any 55gal drum off criags list lol
Lol. Not for water storage at least!
How long do you think this would last if I stored it in a weather exposed area inside of a shed in Southern California
Will it freeze? If so how can I prevent freezing?
The low water table this year in Mpls got me thinking about storing water this year.
I'm interested in how to store water during the winter. What's the best way to store water in the cold and not have it freeze? Also, if storing outside in the winter what would be the best mix of chemicals since I wouldn't want to store a full 55 galllons in case it freezes and room for expansion is needed?
Thanks.
I bought a heat cable to wrap the barrels with.
The only place i could store something like that is my garage, which gets hot in the summer, would that be an issue or would it be ok so long as they're kept out of sunlight?
Good question. U find an answer yet? My garage gets real toasty
Same here
My concern as well. The garage has to get over 100° easy in the summer.
Heat will leech the platic into the water. I recommend digging a 2ft hole next to your garage and put the barrels in the ground. Cover it wil a reflective tarp so sunlight gets reflected away. This will keep it cool in the summer
@@peachfuds then don’t let it freeze to the point it brakes the barrel,
I treated my water barrels with the water treatment mentioned. Can anyone please tell me what the reddish gunk in my hose is and what I should do?
They are on there side with a clear hose going to the bottom barrel
did you clean the barrel out first?
I’m on city water. Does it hurt to still add the stabilizer?
Nope!
Can you stack those drums on top of each other? And I have them 2 high, if so do I need to put 2x4 across the top for Spreading out the weight or can they stack directly on top of each other?
You cannot stack them when they are full. I'd build a 2x4 frame that supports the top one so the bottom isn't supporting any of the weight
@@PilotPatriot I am surprised at all the men, asking these kind of questions. I am grandma, and would not do that! The weight, 400 pounds and pressure on lid and tank below. I learned THAT from canning food! I am keeping my barrel inside my house and putting a lace tablecloth over it!
Living in Dallas area, i will be storing outside. Are there any threat of be the drum freezing? If so what would you recommend
It could freeze. If you're concerned about that just don't fill it completely full. Leave some room for expansion.
I'm applying heat cables and aluminum wrap insulation.
BPA
This is a good video, but how do you know that you have the proper chlorine residual after mixing he AqualMira in the drum with the water? Do you ever test the water for chlorine residual?
Aquamira tells you how much to use
@@PilotPatriot Thank you for answering my question. I've discovered some free chlorine test strips. They cost about $17 for a pack of 50 test strips. Since chemicals may not be made or mixed properly or the chlorine could react with soap residue left in the drum from washing, testing is a good idea when your health is at stake.
Question, there are some I can buy locally that stores salt water. Could I just wash those out and they’d be good to go?
@@citizenresponse yes if they are clean and bpa free
Did you know that you can can water and it will last for years , if not indefinitely.
What do you use the RV/Marine water hose for? Don't know what to do with it. I have a pump so not sure what the hose is for??
The hose is to fill the barrel with water.....it's a drinking water safe hose unlike your average garden hose.
What about storing in a garage? My garage gets over 100 in the summer.
Should be fine as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight
What is the black barrel opener for if I have to buy a bung wrench?
If you're talking about the black wrench in the Water barrel kit link....that is a bung wrench
@@PilotPatriot thank you. I actually was able to open the barrel with the bunch wrench instead of having to buy a bung wrench.
It's me again sir, was wondering if you have any suggestions on which brand of long term food storage. I'll be thankful for any help you can give me. (4 patriot,Legacy,Readywise,My Patriot,Augason,Wise Company,Mountain House). So many!! Please Help!!!
This should help ua-cam.com/video/zdKYujhoD6U/v-deo.html
@@PilotPatriot Hey thanks. That was very helpful as i am new at this!
Do you recommend storing softened water? (Our water softener does not remove the chlorine.)
I honestly have no idea what softened water is lol
😂 Guess you don’t have hard water where you live.
Softened water is a conditioning process that removes all the minerals that leave deposits on faucets and shower walls, etc.
@@elizabethhayes1983 NO. That has a lot of sodium in the water. Use CITY WATER...PLAIN. It is never recommended to drink this softened water! The kitchen normally, has cold water, UNTREATED. Oh my gosh, why would you store it? Use common sense. CITY water, add treatment or not. I never add extra in my gallon water jugs. Fine for years. No algae growth. Then I can use them to flush the toilet. Or purify by boiling or adding treatment , if I want to consume it.
@@littleme3597 Thank you, but you could have left out the shaming comment and I would have gotten the message.
How often do you retreat Aquamira
He said it lasts 5 to 10 years!
How often do you retreat Aquamira?
I don't, every 5 years I empty it and put new water.
Thank you! After 5 years per say, do you dump the water out and fill the barrel with new water or do you keep the same water in the barrel and retreat it again?
Dump and refill
@@PilotPatriot much appreciated, my gratitude. God bless brother 🙏
I have a white drum. Any recommendations?
Keep it in a dark place, or Cover the barrel with black plastic or heavy duty 55 gal trashbag.
@@PilotPatriot Thank you so much!!
Can you stack the 55gal barrels?
No
@@PilotPatriot I get so tickled at these questions. SURE...LIFT THAT 400 POUNDS! One gallon=8 pounds!
Can I fill it up from the garden hose and treat the water if I’m on city water? Or do I need to use a different water source?
Yes, city water should also already be treated...but I'd use the treatment anyway
@@PilotPatriot Thanks for the video. I have a similar question about using the garden hose to fill. I saw in other places that you need a special hose to fill these. Is that just for RV users? We are on city water, and I literally just want to drag this thing into the pantry run the hose in the house from the outside spigot, fill it, and leave it. Is the garden hose okay to use? Seems like there may be dirt or something in there, but I figure if you let it run long enough, it'll flush out. It looks like you have a special attachment on your hose?
@Denise Swan I used a food grade (drinking safe) hose, you can usually find those at your big box store, rv section, or amazon
Funny as hell when that barrel turned while wrenching the hung plug. 55 gallond of water at 7 lbs per gallon wouldn't move.
DUH!!!.... it was a demonstration for video purposes....do you really think I would fill it with 55 gal of water while its sitting in front of my garage door??? Lol.
@@PilotPatriot I am having so much fun, reading these posts, as a grandma, septuagenarian. Most of these people would NOT survive if they have to ask, these kind of questions. It is sad. I love the men asking about storing, LIFTING 400+ pounds of blue barrel, on top of each other! That I want to see. I admire your patience.
@@littleme3597same!
Would it be necessary to add the preservatives if I just plan to take it out from the barrel then run it through a berkey?
I plan to do the same.
Do barrels need to be kept off the ground?
some say no, as long as its a blue HDPE barrel but i think Its a good idea to keep have them off the ground so nothing can seep into the plastic over time from the ground or concrete underneath. mine are sitting on 2x4s to create a gap. Its so easy to do theres no real reason not to just set it up off the ground.
@@PilotPatriot Thank you
@@PilotPatriot Clap, clap, clap!
Can you help 🙏 me Hi I have 5 gallon collapsible polypropylene food grade water storage containers. And I have the Aquamira 2 part Chlorine Dioxide treatment.
I'll be using city water from the tap. I have to treat it because in our area it's very contaminated. How do I treat the water prep the gallon containers the right way?
I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach?
Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals?
Also let's say it can be used how do I start?
Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks
This is an older video but it may help ua-cam.com/video/OzCl7QIKHaI/v-deo.htmlsi=bKB2mlmnTpBg3EK5
As far as your container I'm not sure I'd contact the manufacturer to ask about that
how much regular bleach per gallon and for 55 gallon drum, for those of us who can't afford it don't care to buy products?
Not sure about that but I'm sure the Info is online somewhere....i dont like this taste of water treated with bleach and the aquamira is only $20 to treat the whole 55gal for 5+ years
Provident Pepper recommends using fresh, newly purchased regular unscented household bleach. Use 2 tablespoons for a 55 gallon drum. Try not to use bleach that you have around the house that isn't newly purchased or opened. Opened containers of bleach lose their effectiveness over a period of months. Best to buy fresh bleach when you do this.
A lot of this made me cringe like this water is going bad. But the worst part was the pump laying on ground. 😬 Wash that with alcohol
Where do I get the wrench and pump?
Links in the description!!
@@PilotPatriot lol You are patient. See, what I mean. No one pays any attention. I did.
Food grade blue hdpe doesn’t absorb liquid. Buying used is smarter just do your research. Clean it out properly. Or spend $200 on a $10 barrel like this guy.
Thank you
Thank you
