First of all, FANTASTIC cover! I've been learning a lot of Tool songs thanks to your vids with the powertab play-along, really takes the guess work out of it. So music theory nerds, I gotta know- Is it alternating bars of 4/4 and 13/8, or 3 bars of 7/8? I think that concept of obscuring the downbeat is called "Disguising the time", (kinda makes things sound like they're in a different time signature) Which Tool have implemented it in the past. Because the whole, 4/4 + 13/8 is really 8+13=21/8. So I think it's like, either or either is correct. (Leading up to this album, I've heard Danny say they were "doing this one in 21 right now"...) That's why I'm just curious about if anyone could shed some light on the subject...
All true. I basically released this video 2 days after the album came out, so at the time I thought it was correct. But very quickly, people started telling me that technically, it's 21/8 or 7/8 which makes total sense :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 Fantastic! When you first posted, I was really intimidated trying to make sense of all the time signatures. But one step at a time, I'm slowly learning off of your video. So if you don't mind me asking, how did you figure out all the odd bars? I mean for making the power tab part, do you just record and an app does the work, or do you have to write it all in? I imagine just setting a tempo, or even play along would be hard to do because Tool don't record to a metronome, or click track. Baressi was talking about that, too. (for example, they would have to adjust delay times bar-by-bar just to compensate for the human performance) So I guess simply put, how did you get the power tab to sync up? I couldn't imagine it was easy...
If you constantly train your ears to play by ear and study the fretboard while figuring things out by ear, these songs are no problem, the time signatures and riff structures are what are difficult to nail perfectly. Play by ear way more dude you'll thank yourself for it in the long run. You'll be able to play other instruments more easily as a result !
Tip for all learners out there: when starting that 5 minutes bassline on the middle, press 6 as it goes to 60% of the video and it's near the end of it.
Do you feel like this is the Danny and Adam show? Maynard has less presence and less grit (but much more technique) and Justin.... doesn't seem to really have a standout moment in the album? Descending intro I guess but idk. There isn't a schism or 46 & 2 or a Rosetta Stoned breakdown moment. Overall the album is just fantastic anyway, but I just kinda feel like Justin is just THERE and not a PRESENCE like normal.
Hmmm, not sure about that. Bass shouldn't stand out that much in my opinion. That being said, his bass is really quite loud and punchy in Pneuma, Descending, Invincible and this one. So yeah, i don't know really. Whatever it is, I don't mind. And I think Maynard did a great job.
@@LeoBassCovers2 I suppose that's fair. I'm just getting started on bass so maybe I'm not used to that subtlty? (dirty guitar player here). But that's why it seems strange, becuase Justin really WASN'T subtle. The album is GREAT. I just don't know what to make of Justin's parts in it. He feels much more like he's in lockstep with the bass drum than doing his own thing (or perhaps danny is matching HIM more and not doing so many polyrhythms against the bass? Either Way. I still love it and I'll be here for learning all of it as best I can with my feeble capabilties. thank you SO much for the effort you put in on these videos.
